Bidenism is a term used to describe the political philosophy and policy approach of Joe Biden, the 46th President of the United States and similar administrations.[1][2][3] It encompasses Biden's governing style, policy priorities, and political strategy, which have been characterized as a blend of moderate centrism and culturally progressive elements.[4][5][6] It is often described as "anti-Trumpism".[7][8]

Political strategy

Bidenism's political strategy involves positioning himself as a moderate[9] while incorporating more progressive elements into his agenda.[1][7] This approach aims to appeal to a broad coalition of voters[10], including both centrist Democrats and those further left on the political spectrum.[11] The strategy also draws on elements of populism, which some analysts argue helps Biden counter potential ideological challenges from his predecessor, Donald Trump.[12][13]

Bidenism's foreign policy approach emphasizes a focus on domestic concerns[14] while maintaining America's global leadership[15] role.[16][17] This strategy eventually lead to the withdrawal from Afghanistan and the indirect approach to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, where Biden has maintained a policy of supporting Ukraine without direct U.S. military involvement.[18][19]

The administration's China policy is considered a blend of traditional Democratic positions and elements adopted from the previous administration's more "confrontational"[4] stance.[20] This includes maintaining some aspects of Trump's trade policies in response to perceived "unfair"[21] economic practices by China.[22] Biden's strategy also involves appealing to a sense of American optimism and the potential for "gradual, positive change".[4][23]

Bidenism is often viewed as a descendant of Barack Obama's "Hope and Change" messaging from 2008, adapted for the political landscape of 2020 and beyond.[24][25] Some analysts argue that Bidenism's optimistic view of America's future and potential for improvement connects to a long-standing tradition of American optimism.[5][26]
