Betty A. Rosa. (born 1952) is an American educator and the Commissioner of the New York State Education Department and serves as the President of the University of the State of New York. Prior to becoming Commissioner, Rosa served as the Chancellor of the New York State Education Department, governing the Board of Regents.
Rosa became Commissioner of the New York State Education Department following the resignation of former Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia in 2019. Rosa served the rest of Elia's tenure as Interim Commissioner from August 2020 before the Board of Regents appointed Rosa as permanent Commissioner on February 8, 2021.
Education
editRosa graduated from the City College of New York (CUNY) and also attended Lehman College and Harvard University. She earned her B.A. in psychology and an M.S.E. in administration and supervision from CUNY. She additionally earned another M.S.E. but in bilingual education from Lehman College. Rosa earned a Doctorate in Education, planning, and social policy from Harvard University.
She was elected as chancellor in 2016.[1]
