Battle of Melhama was a raiding battle of the Seljuk vanguard forces.
Sultan Izz-al-din sent Mubariz-ad-din Bahramshah with an elite vanguard force of 3,000 men to determine the location and quantity of the Armenian army. Mubariz-ad-din established his headquarters in the Shoghagan Monastery and began to pursue the Armenian army. He eventually fought them on the Melhama Plain. Despite his small strength, he managed to destroy the Armenian army before the actual battle began, and he set out for the Keban Plain to convey the knowledge he had gained to the Sultan.[2][3][4]
