Avessa, headquartered in Miami, embarked on its journey in December 2019 as a bimonthly magazine. However, it quickly adapted to the changing times and shifted its focus to small-batch prints. In 2021, Avessa leaped into the digital world, introducing a corresponding digital magazine with additional articles that complement the quarterly themes. Avessa[2] has featured numerous emerging designers and artists but primarily concentrates on forward-looking fashion and how cultural ebbs and flows impact what we wear.

History

edit

2019 – 2021

edit

Flavio Augusto Iryoda[3][4], a self-taught photographer, founded Avessa to highlight fashion in a way that was no longer available. The magazine’s mission is to be a vehicle of creativity and fantasies brought to life in unique fashion editorials. Flavio’s purpose has always been to demonstrate to the world how the art of fashion can be highlighted with strong visuals mixed with the inspirations of emerging designers.

Avessa[5] never intended to follow celebrity-driven themes; instead, the magazine emphasized fashion-forward ideas and the fact that fashion is another art form. Contributors to the magazine have come from South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, with themes ranging from environmentalism to gender discussions and how the fashion industry plays a part.

2021 – Present

edit

In the summer of 2021, Avessa began interweaving serious journalism and cultural discussions into its fashion editorials. The purpose was to encourage writers and editors to highlight personal stories and opinions that had remained untold until now. The magazine prides itself on being insightful, provocative, and respectful as it showcases the art of fashion.

Avessa incorporates points of view from not only fashion professionals but also economists, philosophers, and contemporary writers in its pursuit of showcasing glamour with intelligence.

Style and Influence

edit

Avessa disdains celebrity-driven culture, not because it is a popular rebellious point of view but because it lacks depth of meaning. Focusing on emerging fashion, literary, and artistic creators leads its target audience to think more seriously about the issues confronting the world. Avessa is created to discuss provocative topics and emphasize the swirling points of view that abound.

Fast Fashion[6]

edit

Discussion of how digital nativism and the cult of “immediate fashion” combine to ruin the environment and increase the superficiality of culture. Fashion is meant to uplift, inspire, and enchant, yet social hypocrisy, rapacious fashion trends, and a clever supply chain have intertwined to lead us into environmental and ethical disaster.

Lost American Dreams[7]

edit

Reflective view of how contemporary American culture has devolved into a cacophony of discordant and hypocritical voices screaming in disagreement. The article questions why working-class Americans are so disillusioned. Why do they want the rest of us to burn?

Feminism and Fashion

edit

This is a review of how feminism as a social movement has unified its supporters and how it has used fashion to remain relevant. For many women, fashion is the ultimate act of belonging. For others, it is an act and language of resistance.
