Adrishyo Trikon (Bengali: অদৃশ্য ত্রিকোণ, English: The Invisible Triangle) is a Bengali mystery novella written by Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay in 1961, featuring the famous fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshi.[1]
Plot
editWhile on a government assignment, Byomkesh Bakshi and his companion Ajit are approached by Police Inspector Ramanimohan Sanyal about an unsolved murder. The victim, Reba Sarkar, was the daughter-in-law of wealthy businessman Shivprasad Sarkar, who had recently died, leaving his entire estate to her instead of his son, Sunil Sarkar.
Sunil, known for his irresponsible lifestyle, resented Reba's control over the family fortune. After inheriting the wealth, Reba downsized their lifestyle and imposed strict financial limits on Sunil. She began noticing a suspicious figure lurking around their home and grew concerned for her safety, though Sunil was reluctant to involve the police.
Byomkesh suspects a more sinister plot and investigates, uncovering a web of deceit, hidden motives, and a dangerous scheme revolving around Sunil's growing desperation and unseen tensions within the Sarkar family. Using his understanding of human behavior, Byomkesh devises a strategy to expose the truth, with the solution remaining elusive until the end.[1]
Themes
editThe novella explores several themes:
1. Psychological Manipulation: Byomkesh's investigative style relies heavily on understanding and manipulating human psychology.
2. Moral Dilemmas: The story contrasts frugality and greed, loyalty and betrayal, adding depth to the detective narrative.
3. Human Nature: The characterization of Sunil as morally weak contrasts with the practical and intelligent Reba, showcasing differing human responses to wealth and power.[1]
Reception
editOne reviewer found the story's pace slower compared to other Byomkesh stories, with a focus on dialogue over action.[1]
Adaptations
editAdrishyo Trikon was adapted into an episode of the Byomkesh Bakshi television series, which aired in 1997.[2] The episode brought the cerebral and intense story to the small screen, introducing a wider audience to this complex Byomkesh case.
The story has also been adapted for modern streaming platforms. JioCinema features Adrishyo Trikon as part of its Byomkesh series, making the tale accessible to a new generation of viewers.[3]
Publication
editAdrishyo Trikon has been published in various formats over the years:
The original Bengali version has been reprinted multiple times and is available in both print and digital formats.[4]
An English translation titled The Invisible Triangle is available as an e-book.[5]
Free digital versions of the Bengali text are also available online, though the legality of these distributions may vary.[6]
