Abdel Halim Qandil (1954) is an Egyptian opposition doctor and journalist. He is the general coordinator of the Egyptian Movement for Change, Kifaya, which has an Arab nationalist orientation.

Early life

Qandil was born in the village of Tawila, affiliated with the city of Mansurah in Dakahlia Governorate. His origins go back to the Sharqiya Governorate, as his great-grandfather Qandil Khalil was the mayor of the village of Mahmoudiya, Hihya Center, and the center of his family's influence is still there today. The Egyptian army by chance.

His arrest by the Jordanian authorities

Qandil was arrested on Saturday morning, May 15, 2010, upon his arrival at Queen Alia International Airport in the Jordanian capital to participate in an event organized by the Jordanian Professional Associations Complex to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the Nakba of the Palestinian people. This prompted the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information to issue a statement holding the Egyptian and Jordanian governments responsible for Qandil’s safety and freedom.

He was released on Sunday, May 16, 2010, to be allowed to enter Jordan without any explanation for this arrest or release procedure, and without any comment from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry in this regard.

Abdel Halim Qandil headed the editorial board of Sawt Al-Umma newspaper from July 2008 until March 2009, then Sayed Abdel Aati took over as editor-in-chief from March 2009, then Abdel Halim Qandil returned to head it again from April 2011 until now

He is being investigated for insulting the president.

On Wednesday, January 2, 2013, the Appeals Prosecution referred a report accusing Abdel Halim Qandil, editor-in-chief of Sawt Al-Umma newspaper, of insulting and defaming President Mohamed Morsi, and referred it to the North Giza Prosecution to complete the investigation and take the necessary legal measures against him.
