Abdel Halim Qandil (1954) is an Egyptian opposition doctor and journalist. He is the general coordinator of the Egyptian Movement for Change, Kifaya, which has an Arab nationalist orientation.

Early life

Qandil was born in the village of Tawila, affiliated with the city of Mansurah in Dakahlia Governorate. His origins go back to the Sharqiya Governorate, as his great-grandfather Qandil Khalil was the mayor of the village of Mahmoudiya, Hihya Center, and the center of his family's influence is still there today. Qandil was arrested on Saturday morning, May 15, 2010, upon his arrival at Queen Alia International Airport in the Jordanian capital to participate in an event organized by the Jordanian Professional Associations Complex to commemorate the 62nd anniversary of the Nakba of the Palestinian people. This prompted the Arabic Network for Human Rights Information to issue a statement holding the Egyptian and Jordanian governments responsible for Qandil’s safety and freedom.

He was released on Sunday, May 16, 2010, to be allowed to enter Jordan without any explanation for this arrest or release procedure, and without any comment from the Egyptian Foreign Ministry in this regard.
