Bug in category assignment? edit

A number of pages being report as in this category do not report being in it themselves. For example: metre is in the list at Category:Pages with incorrect formatting templates use, but on the metre page itself, in the categories section, it is not reported as being in this category. Wikipedia seems to contradict itself, which sounds to me like a bug in MediaWiki.     — SkyLined (talk) 11:30, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Has something changed recently on that article, or in the template? The system sometimes takes a few hours to catch up with changes in categorization through templates.--Kotniski (talk) 11:36, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
No, this seems to be a permanent problem for these pages. However, that may explain the results I found when copy+pasting such a page to my user-space. I'll wait for a bit to see if it shows up in the category later. Also, I removed some pages from this category earlier and that was instantaneous...     — SkyLined (talk) 11:39, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Also, I copy+pasted the text in one of these pages into a test page in my User: sandbox and for some reason it does NOT end up in the category!? Exact same text, different results...     — SkyLined (talk) 11:35, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

Probably because that text shouldn't cause the page to be placed in the category. In other words, I think it's correct that these pages (including your test page) aren't marked with the category, and the error is that some are still showing up on the category page for some reason (probably they used to belong to the category, but didn't get removed from it when they should have done). I've met this sort of problem before occasionally - if they really are permanently stuck in the category, it probably is an error that needs to be reported to the devs.--Kotniski (talk) 11:48, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh, but I've found a way to fix particular cases manually - I just did it for Foot-pound (energy). Put the page back into the category (by deliberately introducing an error into a {{val}} template, for example), then revert yourself.--Kotniski (talk) 11:52, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
A null edit fixes this sort of problem. Algebraist 12:48, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
Oh yes, seems it does. (I wonder why a null edit now fixes it, though, and all the other edits that have occurred in the meantime didn't fix it?)--Kotniski (talk) 15:02, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
 Y Fixed, thanks!     — SkyLined (talk) 09:01, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

String templates edit

There are a number of templates in this category because they have example errors in their documentation and depend on one or two templates that do not yet support the "nocategory" argument to prevent this. These templates are edit protected, so we'll have to wait for an admin to edit them and implement "nocategory". This will hopefully remove all of them, but a few Wikipedia:null edits may be needed as explained above.     — SkyLined (talk) 09:13, 5 November 2009 (UTC)Reply
