The genus Bubulcus was introduced in 1855 by the French naturalist Charles Lucien Bonaparte with the western cattle egret as the type species.[1][2] The genus name is from Latin and means "cowherd".[3] The genus contains two species:[4]

Image Name Common name Distribution
Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) -Florida Keys2.jpg Bubulcus ibis Western cattle egret Southern Spain and Portugal, tropical and subtropical Africa and humid tropical and subtropical Asia and tropical and subtropical America

Some taxonomic authorities lump both species together, calling them cattle egrets, and making the genus monotypic.[5][6][7]
