BTS, the Best (stylized in all caps ) is the second Japanese compilation album (fourth overall) by South Korean boy band BTS . It was released on June 16, 2021 through Def Jam Recordings and Virgin Music . The album was a huge commercial success, reaching number one in Japan's Oricon Chart and went on to become the first ever Korean male group to surpass 1 million albums mark in Japan alone and also had the biggest first week sales for an album in Japan in 2021.[ 1] [ 2]

Background
BTS announced the release of a new Japanese song, "Film Out " on February 16, 2021.[ 3] The song was written by BTS member Jungkook in collaboration with Iyori Shimizu, the vocalist of Japanese rock power trio Back Number .[ 4] It is slated to serve as the ending theme song of the movie Signal the Movie Cold Case Investigation Unit (2021).[ 5] On March 26, the band released the music video teaser of the song and simultaneously announced the release of a new Japanese-language album, BTS, the Best .[ 6] The track list was also announced simultaneously.[ 7] The album contains all of the band's previous Japanese releases since 2017, while including their English-language 2020 single, "Dynamite " as a bonus track.[ 8] Seven versions of the album had been announced with various supportive materials in each version, such as different posters, photo cards and artwork.[ 9]
BTS, the Best debuted atop the Oricon Daily Album Chart, selling 571,589 physical copies in a single day, becoming the best-selling album of the year.[ 10] [ 11] It debuted atop the Oricon Albums Chart for the week ending June 28, 2021, selling 782,369 copies.[ 12] The album spent three consecutive weeks atop the chart, selling more than 885,000 copies.[ 13] The album furtermore topped Oricon's Digital Album Chart, selling 7,603 digital copies in it's release week.[ 14] On Billboard Japan ' s Hot Albums chart, BTS, the Best entered atop, selling an estimated 807,000 units.[ 15] [ 16]
