Govindan who previously worked as publicity designer expressed interest in producing a film with S. P. When Jayalalitha learned that the film is being directed by Muthuraman who previously worked in Enga Mama as assistant director she agreed with the choice.[5][7] Kamal Haasan who was working as dance assistant to K. Thangappan made a cameo appearance as the Buddha for a song.[5]

Release and reception edit

Anbu Thangai was released on 30 August 1974.[10] The critic from Kalki praised the performances of the star cast, Guhanathan's story and Muthuraman's direction and concluded by calling it as among the list of those films on brother and sister after Pasamalar.[4] According to Muthuraman, despite the film's average response at box-office, the film's producer Govindan gained profits.[11]
