Novak Djokovic is the two-time defending champion from when the event was last held in 2019 .[ 1] In addition, he is attempting to equal Roger Federer 's and Rafael Nadal 's all-time record of 20 Grand Slam men's singles titles. Federer is also attempting to become the sole all-time leader with 21 Grand Slam titles. Djokovic could become the male first player to win titles in Australian Open , French Open and Wimbledon in a single calendar year since Rod Laver in 1969, and the first ever to do so on three different surfaces.
Djokovic and Daniil Medvedev are in contention for the number 1 ranking. Medvedev can become number 1 by winning the tournament, or by reaching the final if Djokovic loses before the final.
It is the first time since the 2016 edition that two-time champion Nadal will not participate.[ 2]
For the first time since 2002 , the seeding formula system will not be used and instead using a standard ranking system based on ATP Rankings .[ 3]
