List of pages created? edit

Is there any way to get a list of all pages I've created? Special:Newpages allows to search by username, but says that pages older than one month are not shown."

I am curious about this too. The article says: "Escaladix' tool, counts and shows all articles and redirects started by a given user" But the link to the tool doesn't work. Any help appreciated. Voorlandt (talk) 23:14, 26 January 2008 (UTC)Reply
This is a very urgent need... I looked all around for the exact same thing today... Zilch, nothing. The best way, apart from creating an external counter, would be to add another category to the Special:Contributions page, a "Page Creation Log". That shouldn't be so hard to do. Check the edit on the page history, see if theres any edit before it. If not, its a page creation. Otherwise, see the page size before the edit. If its 0 bytes or not defined, its again a page or redirect create. Sniperz11talk|edits 09:37, 27 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Question edit

Can anyone tell me why Kate's tool edit count is just over 100 less than my edit count in "my preferences"? Which is more accurate? Ctjf83 talk 09:44, 9 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Your edit count in your preferences includes contributions that have been deleted, like from pages that have been deleted or from specific edits you made that had information that needed to be removed from the history for legal reasons. Kate's tool only includes edits still on Wikipedia. --rm 'w avu 11:38, 9 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Statistics for Vandalism edit

In order to analyse the impact of vandalism are the following statistics available for a particular article:

  • the number of editors who have this article in their watchlist
  • article read rate (something like, # times article is read per day)

BradMajors (talk) 03:29, 1 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Regarding the first, NO. Making that public would be inviting vandals to attack pages that aren't being watched. (Admins do have the ability to run a special report showing pages that aren't watched by anyone at all.)
Regarding the second, that's available at here; information goes back to December 2007. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 03:26, 1 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Idea edit

Hi, I was wondering if it would be feasible to create an edit counter that separates out edits made by AutoWikiBrowser (or other semi-automated tools, such as Twinkle and VandalProof). For example, when looking at my own edit count [2], periods where I have done AWB runs (November 2007, March and April 2008) stick out like a sore thumb. I can't be the only AWB user to be affected by this, so in circumstances like RfA it might be desirable to be able to see how many "manual" edits someone has made, as opposed to (semi-) automated ones.

(For the record, my own programming skills are definitely not up to a task like this!) --RFBailey (talk) 01:25, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

PS. If such a counter already exists, I apologise for my ignorance..... --RFBailey (talk) 01:26, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Better ways to browse edits edit

Counting edits is a simple concept. I think this Wikiproject needs to broaden its focus: we need better ways to examine people's past edits. Most importantly, we need to be able to list people's edits on each page by size. Since Wikipedia already records the amount of kilobytes changed, this should be doable, but people don't seem to be thinking about it much. I'm no programmer, any comments on the feasibility? To begin, we need the simpler task of listing only a certain contributors' edits to a certain page. ImperfectlyInformed | {talk - contribs} 23:17, 30 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

It's not that simple. If a vandal removes 10,000 bytes and I put it back via a revert, should I be credited with adding 10,000 bytes to the article?

Issue with Kate's tool edit

Kate's tool seems to be overstating my deleted edit count. I think the difference is the number of edits I've made to the "Image:" namespace; is it possible that its counting them as both deleted and undeleted since the name change? Guest9999 (talk) 16:51, 15 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

User contributions to articles they did not create edit

There are at least two tools that list the articles that a user has created but I cannot find anything that assesses a user's contribution to articles they have not created. Is there anything out there that does this? My ideal would be:

  1. Input: a User Name
  2. Generate a list of all articles the user has edited but did not not create.
  3. For each article on the list:
    1. determine the number of characters the user has contributed
    2. calculate what percentage of the article's total size (in characters) this is.
  4. Output the list of articles, ordered alphabetically within percentage (greatest first) showing for each article: Article name, percentage contribution, characters contributed, total size (in characters).

Content counter idea edit

I was wondering if anyone had attempted to make a tool that counted the total sum of bytes of a user's contributions. Edit counts--and edit count rankings--don't really tell you how much someone has contributed to Wikipedia. A tool that went through a user's edits and counted the difference in size of an article's versions would give a better measure of how much work an editor has contributed to Wikipedia (especially if the tool were limited to the article space). It seems like such a tool would be feasible. Current page histories show the article size of each version. You would only need to take the difference in size between edits to get the size of a contribution. I can see where this might be difficult to do, or it might put a strain on servers, but I thought I would throw it out there.

This tool would have its potential problems. Reversions to blanking edits would be credited with large contributions unless reversions are excluded from the counter. The tool might also encourage unnecessarily lengthy edits. However, the tool could also encourage all of those racking up their edit counts with small changes to make more substantive contributions. Even though it would be a flawed measure, the problems with a content count tool would offset some of the problems with edit counts, and vice versa. Combining content size sums and regular edit counts would give a better picture of an editor's contributions than an edit counter alone.--Bkwillwm (talk) 04:44, 1 February 2011 (UTC)Reply

Did anything come of this? Sounds useful. Ideally it'd be a measure in change of entropy from the last version so that restoring/blanking would only count as 1 jk, same as changing a single word - whereas a substansive rework of an article (that doesn't result in many bytes changed) would count as many. SpaceInnovader (talk) 08:02, 28 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
I had thought about the same thing; originally I had hoped that there was already a User Box that I could use to display how many cumulative bytes I'd worked on. I think this would be a super cool tool, alas I don't think I'd be able to help make one, I have very limited programming skills :( Captain Eek Edits Ho Cap'n! 06:46, 3 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

That's a discretionary sanction, put into place to reduce sock/meat puppetry and encourage discussion. They're rare, but required for intractable disputes on the encyclopedia. You'll notice that all editors are under a 1RR, even over 500 edits, so the benefits of exceeding that number are small - and I'm sure the theory behind them is that after about 500 edits and 1 month, editors will have a better understanding of how the encyclopedia works. Do you have any examples which have not involved arbitration? WormTT(talk) 11:42, 5 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Based on the information presented, no. The few cases that have been pointed out deal only with 500 or so edits. I can and do think that it is a not unreasonable number to use in those instances when there is thought to be a potential problem regarding creation of sockpuppets or meatpuppets. Most everybody I have ever encountered recognizes that the difference in conduct and knowledge of policies and guidelines, between, for instance, an editor with five thousand edits and one hundred thousand or more edits is generally negligible; both are assumed to basically know that they are doing, admittedly, sometimes inaccurately. I am unaware myself of any cases where these edit count numbers have had much if any utility in cases other than those involving new and inexperienced editors and those which might involve some form of sockpuppetry or meatpuppetry. If there are any instances where edit count has been a factor in other cases, it would be very useful to know what they are, but, without such information, I would have to say this doesn't really look like a significant matter. As one of the admins involved in the discussion which instituted the restrictions at Nagorno-Karabakh, I would add that the situation there is very atypical. It's a very bitter nationalist dispute, and ethnic tensions run particularly high for entirely understandable reasons; in addition to attracting a lot of new users who don't get how Wikipedia works, it's been plagued with sockpuppetry for years. It turned out to be an extremely effective restriction as well, as two of the most obvious POV-pushers there proceeded to act like fools and get themselves blocked by making hundreds of useless edits to get to 500 so they could game the system. Sometimes it's necessary to take drastic action to get a lid on these problems. The Blade of the Northern Lights (話して下さい) 07:57, 6 December 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the information. Pass a Method talk 14:28, 6 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

IN 2004 there were only 80 editors with over 500 edits. 500 is actually a lot of edits. Rich Farmbrough, 05:11, 3 January 2013 (UTC).Reply

Dashboard is down edit

For the last week or so I am getting the following error when trying to use the tool: "403: User account expired

The page you requested is hosted by the Toolserver user wiki_researcher, whose account has expired. Toolserver user accounts are automatically expired if the user is inactive for over six months. To prevent stale pages remaining accessible, we automatically block requests to expired content.

If you think you are receiving this page in error, or you have a question, please contact the owner of this document: wiki_researcher [at] toolserver [dot] org. (Please do not contact Toolserver administrators about this problem, as we cannot fix it—only the Toolserver account owner may renew their account.)"

I've tried contacting the owner, and send an email to PARC (it's their project, per the logo seen at http://wikidashboard.appspot.com/ ) through their web form, but so far - nothing. Can anyone help to contact them?

The tool is useful not only for research (I've used and I am sure so have others here); it is also one of the tools used by Good Article reviewers (and linked from {{Good_article_tools}}) --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| reply here 11:47, 14 June 2013 (UTC)Reply

Number of unique pages edited: range by time? edit

I was delighted to find that Kate's Tool gives a result for the number of unique pages edited -- this is very helpful to me. Ideally, I'd like to calculate that value within a specified range of dates, for example, the number of unique pages that were edited in the last year. Is anything available to do this? Leaflet for Wikiproject Edit Counters at Wikimania 2014 edit

Hi all,

My name is Adi Khajuria and I am helping out with Wikimania 2014 in London.

One of our initiatives is to create leaflets to increase the discoverability of various wikimedia projects, and showcase the breadth of activity within wikimedia. Any kind of project can have a physical paper leaflet designed - for free - as a tool to help recruit new contributors. These leaflets will be printed at Wikimania 2014, and the designs can be re-used in the future at other events and locations.

This is particularly aimed at highlighting less discoverable but successful projects, e.g:

• Active Wikiprojects: Wikiproject Medicine, WikiProject Video Games, Wikiproject Film

• Tech projects/Tools, which may be looking for either users or developers.

• Less known major projects: Wikinews, Wikidata, Wikivoyage, etc.

• Wiki Loves Parliaments, Wiki Loves Monuments, Wiki Loves ____

• Wikimedia thematic organisations, Wikiwomen’s Collaborative, The Signpost

The deadline for submissions is 1st July 2014

For more information or to sign up for one for your project, go to:

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal edit

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Messy/ Not Wikipedia-esque edit

I came across this page and noticed that the page is full of striked out text that makes it look messy and harder to read. The talk page is more of a discussion page WP:TALK and not a talk page for discussing page changes and edits. Also there seem to be that look like adverts for things in the last few posts on this page. I do not know if the rules for Project talk pages are different to normal WP talks but I do think that the page is a mess. I don't know if this will be read in the near future but If someone does come across it, it would be helpful if you could clean it us for ease of reading. Tedjam (talk) 18:04, 3 November 2014 (UTC)Reply

I must agree. It requires significant cleanup. Johnny Au (talk/contributions) 03:23, 1 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

WikiProject X is live! edit

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Minor typo on X!'s edit counter edit

I notice that the pie chart on X!'s edit counter shows Artikel rather than Articles in the English version. I am struggling to find someone to report this to, so I thought I'd add a brief note here, in the hope that it might be sorted by some kind soul. Many thanks! What exactly does 'deleted edits' mean in the User Analysis Tool? edit

I tried to find this on this page and in the archives but couldn't find an answer -- what exactly does 'deleted edits' mean? Out of 3899 edits I've made, 189 are 'deleted edits.' I would think that I've been straight-out reverted more times than that, much less that material I've added has been deleted or replaced over time more times than that. Thanks for any help! valereee (talk) 15:36, 17 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

I would like an answer to this too --BeckenhamBear (talk) 21:11, 11 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
@BeckenhamBear: From the Wikipedia:Glossary, a deleted edit is "An edit that is no longer listed in an editor's contributions because the page has subsequently been deleted." -- John of Reading (talk) 08:16, 13 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hourly graph of user's edits? edit

Hi, is there a way to plot all of a user's edits within a certain period by hour? I.e. a graph showing all the edits within a certain period - for example, pick a 48-hour period and graphically see during which hours edits were being made. Esn (talk) 07:06, 17 December 2016 (UTC)Reply

Tool for user edit counts by month/year? edit

I know I saw this within the last couple of weeks, and I found it via a link from a normal Wikipedia page, but I’m afraid I’ve forgotten where it is. The counter listed a user’s edits as month-by-month and year-by-year graphs, color-coded by edit type. Where can I find it again?—DocWatson42 (talk) 05:38, 27 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

Edit count in signing posts edit

I've tried searching online for ways to do this, but I couldn't find any. So is there a way for me to display my edit count as a string, instead of having to link to an external site for showing it (or the need of using an api, as I am not an administrator on places) --Anderium (Edit count for Anderium edits, talk) 09:11, 31 March 2019 (UTC)Reply

Okay so, I searched some more places and it's true that wanting to show how many edits you have is kinda silly. So I won't be searching any longer for something like it. (A bot that would have updated the edit count had consensus that it wasn't a good idea. And as I saw someone say there, it would only make people put more value into their edit count, while any wiki stands for "Quality over Quantity".) -- Anderium (Edit count for Anderium edits, talk)

A new newsletter directory is out! edit

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Template that returns edit counts (in particular type) edit

I've seen that some don't want a bot that doesn't update your edit count automatically, but I'm looking for a template that just returns your edit count (possibly limited to a single type/name-space) when the page is loaded. Does something like that exist and I'm just not finding it? I saw some templates using "{{{1}}}" in their edit count user boxes, but I'm not sure what that's doing, and finding documentation on it (or what the extra squiggly brackets do) is difficult.
