Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Yeah why not, let's see how it goes. I've added the template to the project page, using the default settings; so we are subscribed to all workflows, and the bot will generate the subpage "/Article alerts" when it is run. There are various articles in Category:Derbyshire which could do with coordinates, if anyone feels like adding them (I find this quite interesting but others might not, of course). Derwent Valley Mills

Hi, I've recently started an expansion of the above article and any help expanding it would be greatly appreciated. In particular sourced information regarding Cromford Canal and the Cromford and High Peak Railway would be very much appreciated, as I think I've got the necessary sources to complete the history. I might even end up taking the article to WP:GAC. Also, since it's a World Heritage Site I've changed it's importance to this project from high to top, but feel free to revert it anyone disagrees. Well, the article's now at GAC and is already under review (which is lucky as I couldn't guarantee having the sources used beyond the 20th). Any help with copy-editing etc would be appreciated. Derby

There's been some recent activity on the Derby article that members of this project might be interested in. Off2riorob (talk · contribs) has been trimming the notable people section (the changes so far). I'm not a fan of such sections as they attract vandalism and have a tendency to sprawl, but I thought members might like to keep an eye on the article and make sure that no unsourced changes are made. Alliance

I have just thought of an idea that could help to improve this WikiProject, it may seem at first to be slightly odd but just bear with me. I have looked at the counties in the East Midlands and Compared them to the amount of those counties with WikiProjects, they are Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. We all share a common purpose, that is to work on the articles of our county's which includes local history, geography and biographies.

Therefore to help us share methods of research and many other needs (basically 'constructive collaboration' as I call it) I am proposing that we form an alliance, NOT a Merger. I believe an alliance allows us to be independent just as before but in collaboration as well. This could really benefit our WikiProject and I feel we might be the first in Wikipedia's history. I am a member of WikiProject Lincolnshire and have already proposed the idea with relatively positive feedback still coming in and have placed a notice in the WikiProjects England, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.

As a contributor but not a formal member, I fail to see why. Geographically, my focus is on the High Peak and all the villages around Greater Manchester- the area drained by the Etherow, Goyt and Tame. Putting it simply I am in a different watershed. 70% of my edits are to articles- and time spent keeping up on projects is time I could spend better. If folks want to have an alliance: then shove the other Wikiprojects on the Watchlist, rather than trying to interest the committed in an ever wider set of issues.--ClemRutter (talk) 09:01, 14 June 2009 (UTC)

Derwent Valley Mills fire

I hate to keep banging on about this article, but after the Bath Street Mill in Derby went up in flames there may be activity on the article as they're mentioning it's part of the World Heritage Site. Although there is no mention of the Bath Street Mill in the Derwent Valley Mills article, I believe the redirect should be created as the last paragraph in the article implies to me that the Bath Street Mill is part of Derwent Valley Mills. Maybe add a little information about this to the Derwent Valley Mills article? Above all the redirect should only be created if the situation complies with Wikipedia policy. My heart fell when I heard the news that a mill in a WHS had been damaged in a fire, I want such an important article to get as much exposure as possible, but not like this :-( I've created the redirect as I'm sure the BBC will have checked their facts and it is part of the site (which does extend into Derby). It wasn't mentioned in the article before as with over 800 listed buildings there wasn't anything that set it apart from the others. Now there's national coverage, I'll try to add something. The name sounds familiar, so I'll take a look at the book I've got. Thankfully I've been too lazy to return it to the library :-P Nev1 (talk) 22:02, 16 June 2009 (UTC)

Proposal for a mills task force

A few guys have been doing a lot of work on Windmills, and are proposing mills task force on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Historic sites. I have been in on the discussion and see advantages to opening the criteria to include textile mills. Could anyone who is interested on Cotton look over, read the discussion and maybe give a bit of support?--ClemRutter (talk) 17:10, 23 June 2009 (UTC)

Wind mills sounds too niche IMO, but a task force for textile mills in general would be a great boon to sites involved with the industrial revolution. Far too many important sites are of a poor standard, but articles such as Derwent Valley Mills and Murrays' Mills have set a standard and can be used to give editors an idea of how articles can be expanded. Importance ratings

Could some one knowledgeable have a look at the importance ratings of all articles. Some parochial items seem to be wrongly tagged Royal Shrovetide Football comes to mind. Then I compare Chesterfield, Glossop and Matlock!--ClemRutter (talk) 12:08, 2 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes I agree. I think all four articles you have mentioned should be High importance, maybe Royal Shrovetide Football even Mid. I think the trouble is that there is only limited explanation of how the articles should be rated here. For example is Royal Shrovetide Football nationally recognised as it does get a mention on national news once a year when it is played? Schumi555 13:20, 2 July 2009 (UTC) I think its our view. I'd claim that Ashbourne football is as likely to be recognised as Glossop (Which may not make national news once a year :) ). But no modesty, we don't want 99% "low"s. After a recent request, I added WikiProject Derbyshire to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. "Villages" of Derby

At present Allestree, Littleover, Mickleover and Spondon are all included in Category:Villages in Derbyshire. I would contend that while these places started out as separate villages, they have been swallowed up by urban sprawl, and while retaining some "village" characteristics, I would define them today, geographically and politically, as suburbs / districts rather than villages. Assuming that analysis to be true, I would further argue that settlements should generally be categorised by present status only, as if you go back far enough, Derby itself or any other major town or city would have been a village at some point in history, but wouldn't be put into such a category. I agree entirely, they should be categorised as suburbs of Derby, rather than villages of Derbyshire. I also agree that this is a sensible change. They are completely contained within the City of Derby boundary, and therefore are suburbs/districts rather than villages. Yes they do, most mention the Doomesday Book in some way - referring to the suburb as a former village. Most also state that they are now suburbs of Derby in their lead. Thanks for signing my comment too :) Schumi555 20:49, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

New Mills

For reasons that are too complicated to explain I started to look at this article. I have done a few edits.! I followed the format laid down by WP:UKSettlement group, and then searched for a FA Derbyshire article about a town of a similar size. Failing that it was back to using Wormshill as a model. Groan. So I was wondering whether the group could consider taking up one of the B quality articles, (or even this one) to at least GA, so there is a model for future comparisons.--ClemRutter (talk) 14:11, 7 December 2009 (UTC)

That's excellent, some great work gone in to considerably improving this article :) It would definately meet the C criteria, and maybe even B. I'll take a look into more detail and see if I can find bits to add. I always find it useful to find other articles which have B or GA status to base the structure on, but I'm struggling to find any villages in Category:GA-Class UK geography articles! That's what I do too :) but I am rapidly exhausting online sources. I'm just looking at something for Transport but it's easier in the metropolitan authorities. Haha not quite, I've played cricket there several times! I see two railway stations are mentioned in the article, which one would be Clowne South railway station? Derbyshire articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

Commons Pictures

A massive upload of 1.5 million images from Geograph is under way. For the first 100,000 or so, the images were categorised using a complex algorithm that was right in 60%+ of cases. There were notable casualties- which were amusing if you were desparate for images and infuriating if you had lovingly sub catted a favorite area and saw it swamped. For instance Hayfield attracted 30 images from Argyll. Glossop was pulling in images from Bamford. A whole issue arose with XXXXX is the name a village and civil parish in XXXX, as the village cat and not the parish attracted the lot. Geograph likes taking photos of each OS square, so there are lots of shots of wild country, consequently the High Peak categories were all over the place. Geograph photos only have a location and one subject cat. Using Devon as a model (it has Dartmoor) and has been done. The following system is being tried.

• Locate the image in its civil parish- for instance Charlesworth, Hope Woodland.
• Then give it a cat- based on the Mountain subcatted on the clough- or just use the clough. Take care Wildboar Clough is not Wildboarclough. Crowden is not Crowden vi|lage etc and despair over Featherbed Moss!
• Try to describe the activity

Many new cats will need to be created and described. Each of these descriptions will want to link to a WP article- often the WP article on the civil parish- it is right that each of theses civil parish articles are in the WP category:Civil parishes in Derbyshire. I have created the links for High Peak parishes and created the missing one.... but there are a few more to do. Now, the later images are being uploaded with a template categorys such as Commons:Category:Images from the Geograph British Isles project needing categories in grid SK1270. These are less urgent and much of the hard work may be done by a bot, but again the civil parish will be important. Cat-a-lot is not working with these temlplates yet- but HotCat will.

The good news is that all these images do have a geotag, and the Derbyshire photographers seem to have used WSG84 so they are correct.

I am reporting this as a matter of interest, but asking if Category:Civil parishes in Derbyshire could be hotcatted onto any relevant articles you meet while passing. --ClemRutter (talk) 12:49, 17 February 2011 (UTC)

Should locations that were historically part of Derbyshire be included in the WikiProject?

Map of the County of Derbyshire C.1894.The map show's the county's exclaves within both Leicestershire and Staffordshire which were surrendered in 1897.

For example the village of Stretton En Le Field; it was in Derbyshire until 1897 when it was transferred to Leicestershire; something that also happened to several other neighbouring villages.
These villages have spent the majority of their history in Derbyshire - most still have Derbyshire postcodes - so should we be including them in the WikiProject?

I'd argue against it, on the grounds that there isn't a Leicestershire WikiProject- adding a WD banner to the talkpages would give a misleading impression that the villages were still in Derbyshire. Ning-ning (talk) 20:08, 10 April 2013 (UTC)

I don't think it would be misleading; The main pages of the articles obviously state the villages are currently in Leicestershire; besides, no one goes straight to the talk pages on articles: most don't even look at them at all. Also there is nothing stopping us from adding a note to the talk page explaining that we are covering those articles because of their historical association to Derbyshire. Even if there was a WikiProject for Leicestershire, I'd still recommend we take on such articles- the majority of their history is with Derbyshire and, on a practical level, the majority of their records are in the Derbyshire Records Office, not the Leicestershire one. I found a map that I hope clarifies things. If you look at the south of the county; the villages of Appleby Magna, Chilcote, Stretton En Le Field, Measham, Willesley, Donisthorpe and Oakthorpe all form a big Exclave belonging to Derbyshire.
There's then smaller exclaves containing single villages; these included Packington, Ravenstone and Sibson. But the map also suggests Normanton Le Heath, New Packington, and the Hamlets of Churchtown and Farmtown (now belonging to the village of Coleorton, also belonged to Derbyshire.
All of these were surrendered to Leicestershire in 1897, and Derbyshire gained Overseal, Netherseal, and Swadlincote in return.
If you look to the south west border you can see Tutbury was also previously an exclave of Derbyshire, but in that case surrounded by Staffordshire.

My point is, these 14(ish) villages have only been in Leicestershire for little over 100 years. When you're actually writing the history of these villages for their articles it is all Derbyshire. Most of the articles are stubs; so surely the Derbyshire Project is best placed with the knowledge and resources to expand them?

Please help get Derbyshire ready for the start of the Wiki Loves Monuments competition on 1st September

This September the UK is taking part for the first time in the international photography competition Wiki Loves Monuments. Participants will be invited to submit pictures of listed buildings of significant importance (grades I or grade II*), as recorded by English Heritage. The main external website for competitors can be found here, and you can leave a message there if you have queries about competing. Do please join in, and let people in your local area know of this excellent way in which both existing and new Wiki users can help improve the encyclopaedia by contributing photographs of local listed structures. What about organizing a local Wikimeet to attract new people?

In preparation for the start of the competition on 1st September there is still quite a lot of work to do, and we would like to ask for the help of members of this wikiproject. Your local and expert knowledge will be invaluable in ensuring that the lists of eligible buildings are up to date and correctly formatted. If you look at Listed buildings in the United Kingdom you will see how many structures are included. If you then follow the link to Listed buildings in England, you can get to the detailed lists for your area. Alternatively have a look at the WLM planning table. Can you help to ensure that the lists for your area are up to date and well presented?

Some of the lists have been semi-automatically generated from data provided by English Heritage. These use pre formatted templates (eg EH header) which will make it much easier for competition participants to upload their photographs to Commons as an automated process. Please don't change the template structure, as we need to ensure that the templates are properly compatible with the WLM standards that are in use worldwide. The format will allow a bot automatically to collect the information and to put it into the international Monuments Database.

The data still needs the attention of local editors:

• The "title" may need wikilinking to a suitable article name (whether we currently have that article or not). If there are several buildings in one street all of the wikilinks point at an article about the street; however each entry has a separate line in the list.
• The "location" column looks and sorts better if just the parish or town is included (& wikilinked).
• The "date completed" column sometimes has eg "C19" for 19th century, and "C1850" for c. 1850 when the date is uncertain - these need to be corrected manually.
• The "grid ref & lat & long" (which is occasionally missing) may be given to 8 characters — only 6 (grid ref) or 5 (lat & long) are really needed.
• Clicking on the "list entry number" should take you to the data sheet for that entry on the English Heritage database which can be checked if needed for details.
• The image column should have a picture added if we already have a suitable image on Commons. (N.B. if you are going to be taking photos yourself for inclusion in the competition don't upload them until September)
• References may be added according to normal WP practice.

Popular pages tool update

As of January, the popular pages tool has moved from the Toolserver to Wikimedia Tool Labs. The code has changed significantly from the Toolserver version, but users should notice few differences. Please take a moment to look over your project's list for any anomalies, such as pages that you expect to see that are missing or pages that seem to have more views than expected. Note that unlike other tools, this tool aggregates all views from redirects, which means it will typically have higher numbers. (For January 2014 specifically, 35 hours of data is missing from the WMF data, which was approximated from other dates. For most articles, this should yield a more accurate number. However, a few articles, like ones featured on the Main Page, may be off).

Web tools, to replace the ones at tools:~alexz/pop, will become available over the next few weeks at toollabs:popularpages. All of the historical data (back to July 2009 for some projects) has been copied over. The tool to view historical data is currently partially available (assessment data and a few projects may not be available at the moment). The tool to add new projects to the bot's list is also available now (editing the configuration of current projects coming soon). Unlike the previous tool, all changes will be effective immediately. OAuth is used to authenticate users, allowing only regular users to make changes to prevent abuse. A visible history of configuration additions and changes is coming soon. Once tools become fully available, their toolserver versions will redirect to Labs.

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Old maps and views of the East Midlands

As you might have seen in the Signpost this week, there's currently a drive to go through the million 19th century images released by the British Library last year, and identify all the maps, with a view to their being georeferenced by BL volunteers, and then uploaded to Commons early next year. As of Sunday night, over five thousand new maps have been identified, with 26.5% of the target books looked at -- but see the status page for the latest figures, and more information.

A part that may specifically interest this project is

c:Commons:British Library/Mechanical Curator collection/Synoptic index/England - East Midlands

which currently shows pink templated links for 143 Flickr book pages still to be looked at. (Though there are lots of other parts of England, and indeed of the world, still to be looked through as well).

Any help looking through these would be very much appreciated -- as well as the maps (and ground plans) for tagging, you may well also find other interesting or useful non-map views that may be worth considering or uploading for articles on Derbyshire and the East Midlands.

Why is it so hard to join the Project?

So I clicked on the link on the list of Participants which said 'Click Here To Edit List' and couldn't work out what to do next! I was sure I didn't want to edit the project Template, and it was only by Previewing that page that I then found the link to the Participant table, which I could then edit. Is this a way of ensuring only really keen editors join WikiProject Derbyshire? Or maybe it's one of the reasons why there's a banner at the top of the Project page suggesting this project is inactive. Parkywiki (talk) 01:03, 25 October 2015 (UTC)

My former colleagues at Derbyshire County Council and the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site are organising another wonderful series of "Discovery Days" this year. It will run from Saturday 14th October to Sunday 29th October 2017. Details of all events, by date, are available on this link.

It's a wonderful way for anyone interested in the archaeological, industrial or social history of the county to find out more, direct from the experts - and maybe offer to work with them to enhance content on Wikipedia, too! New Article Needed: St Mary's Bridge Chapel, Derby

Anyone fancy creating a new article on the Chapel of St Mary on the Bridge in Derby? I was surprised such an old historic building hadn't got an article - maybe its complicated naming has put people off. Maybe it should be St Mary's Bridge Chapel? I gather there is a published book on the Chapel, plus some information sheets within the building itself, but for starters there is this on the Derby Cathedral website, or this on Historic England's website. New category proposal: Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site

I'd welcome feedback on the usefulness (or otherwise!) of creating a new category of Category: Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. I'm conscious that this large, fairly linear area contains a considerable number of discrete sites within it (Belper North Mill, Cromford Mill, Derby Silk Mill etc), as well as people like George Sorocold, John Lombe and Richard Arkwright who are closely associated with it, plus much of the River Derwent. Visiting any of these articles doesn't reveal any category which ties them all together to the WHS. The main page on the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site states: The site consists of the communities of Cromford, Belper, Milford, and Darley Abbey, and includes 838 listed buildings, made up of 16 Grade I, 42 Grade II*, and 780 Grade II. A further nine structures are Scheduled Ancient Monuments. The buildings are a mixture of mills, workers' housing, and structures associated with the mill communities. The Cromford Canal and Cromford and High Peak Railway, which aided the industrialisation of the area, are also part of the World Heritage Site. So, is this an issue worth addressing and, if so, can anyone suggest a better category name? Nick Moyes (talk) 10:39, 13 October 2017 (UTC)

WikiProject collaboration notice from the Portals WikiProject

The reason I am contacting you is because there are one or more portals that fall under this subject, and the Portals WikiProject is currently undertaking a major drive to automate portals that may affect them.

Portals are being redesigned.

The new design features are being applied to existing portals.

At present, we are gearing up for a maintenance pass of portals in which the introduction section will be upgraded to no longer need a subpage. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? Useful tasks: Article assessments, cleanup (and Project page maintenance).

Green Man and Black's Head Royal Hotel, Ashbourne - a current DYK nomination.

As at late 2019 this Project has built up a backlog of 128 articles which now need some form of assessment.

• These 49 pages need a quality assessment; Done
• These 75 articles need an importance assessment. Done

• Another useful task would be to update our project page with these recently reviewed FAs and GAs ( Done), and also to update Portal:Derbyshire with a few of the most interesting pages or images.

• And this cleanup listing for WikiProject Derbyshire shows that of the 2033 articles currently in this project, 628 or 31% are marked for some sort of cleanup, with 1005 issues needing addressing in total. Plenty of stuff to go at!

Please consider leaving a note here if you've helped to clear any of these, or if you have ideas for other work this Project should address. Knowing who is actively interested in assessing or re-reviewing Derbyshire articles would be really helpful. This page was recently flagged as 'inactive' by another editor, and it would be a real shame if it stayed that way. So do please get involved again, and maybe there might even be enough interest for a meetup next year! New 'Hot Articles' section

We now have a 'Hot Articles' section, showing the most edited pages related to WikiProject Derbyshire over the previous week.

It was sad to see the topmost edits were to a brand new article about Annie Hall, the former High Sherrif for Derbyshire, who was swept to her death by floodwaters at Rowsley, which (at the time of writiting) are still having serious impacts on parts of our county. New bot to remove completed infobox requests

Hello! I have recently created a bot to remove completed infobox requests and am sending this message to WikiProject Derbyshire since the project currently has a backlogged infobox request category. Details about the task can be found at Wikipedia:Bots/Requests for approval/PearBOT 2, but in short it removes all infobox requests from articles with an infobox, once a week. To sign up, reply with {{ping|Trialpears}} and tell me if any special considerations are required for the Wikiproject. For example: if only a specific infobox should be detected, such as {{infobox journal}} for WikiProject Academic Journals; or if an irregularly named infobox such as {{starbox begin}} should be detected.
