Adoption

edit

Hi Nerdfighter. Are you still interested in continuing adoption by Go Phightins! You have not been around for 2 weeks, so I just wanted to remind you about it. Wouldn't want you to be archived as inactive. Thanks. JHUbal27TalkE-mail 23:47, 23 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

Yeah sure, I've just been busy recently with family stuff so I haven't been all too active. Thanks for the message, I will continue with the adoption. — nerdfighter 23:34, 24 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
I know how busy real life can be. That's fine Nerdfighter, I'll let Phightins know. JHUbal27TalkE-mail 00:22, 25 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Oh man, I keep forgetting about the adoption.. I think I'll stop with it. Nontheless, Go Phightins has been a good adopter and you have been great yourself. Cheers! nerdfighter 03:16, 3 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Hi Nerdfighter. Sorry to hear you'd like to stop. I'll let Phightins know. Please be advised that when I do, you will lose your seat, as there is another adoptee waiting. Also, I may be interested in CVUA training once I am done with adoption. However, I might not be ready for it yet because I want to help Phightins out. I willl consider it though. Thanks. ~~JHUbal27 05:16, 3 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Okay, I'd hate to hold a seat that I'm not using. Alright cool, once your ready for CVUA just leave Jackson or me a message. Thanks! nerdfighter 11:23, 3 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Just wanted to check in and wish you a happy Easter! I know that you're busy, but I sent a user your way for potential CVUA training if/when you both (ever) have time!   I hope all is well! --Jackson Peebles (talk) 17:44, 31 March 2013 (UTC)Reply

You caught me online  ! Happy Easter to you too! Thanks for sending them over. I was meaning to ask, would you like to be a trainer in my CVU school? You meet all my requirements and I could use a hand. If you are busy or don't feel like it, no worries  . Thanks — nerdfighter 17:50, 31 March 2013 (UTC)Reply
Sure, I'm perfectly happy to help out in any way that I can! Bear in mind that I have never done this before, so I will need some guidance to get started, but if you give me explicit instructions on what to do, I'm happy to help.   Nerdfighter, I heard that you wanted to leave adoption and have consequently marked your adoption page for speedy deletion under criterion U1. Don't worry, though, your answers, should you ever want to finish up, are stored in my archive. I hope that you learned something from the course that you can apply to your future editing. edit

Hi there Nerdfighter. Just letting you know that I've updated the HostBot scripts that feature hosts as per our discussion at the Teahouse. However, in order to feature your profile, I had to edit your section heading. The section heading for your profile needs to match you username exactly (inside the noinclude tags) in order for HostBot to see it. I made this change for you, but feel free to revert me if you'd rather use a formatted username than have your profile appear in the featured host gallery. edit

Sorry I have neglected to grade and provide feedback on your CVUA pages recently. I won't have time tonight, but tomorrow I can check them out. nerdfighter 22:42, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

No worries from me, I haven't had time to work on it recently... Busy studying for my real exams in college. Few more weeks and I'll be done the semester. I'll likely work on my CVUA page if I get a moment in the middle. As a side-note, Lee asked me if I wanted to work together on it, and I told him no thanks, but I wouldn't be opposed to helping if he was struggling on a specific thing and you agreed that perhaps running it through my brain might offer an alternative wording that might be helpful to him. Technical 13 (talk) 22:56, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Requesting your opinion.

edit

My user page was recently vandalized, and one of my talk page stalkers quickly reverted it. Since then I've looked into user page edit notices, and have created one for my talk page and one for my user page. Would you take a look at the one for my userpage and tell me if you think it is too bold or offensive. Well, I actually don't care, that was kind of the point, what I'm more worried about is whether or not it is appropriate. Will I catch any slack for having big blinking text telling people not to edit my userpage? The one for my talk page I'm thinking will be fine. Technical 13 (talk) 00:08, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello again Technical 13! I think your talk page notice may confuse some very new editors because, at least on my smallish screen, I have to scroll down to the edit section. Perhaps just shorten it a little so the edit section is visible without scrolling. Just some thoughts :) nerdfighter 00:31, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I use wikEd which automatically takes me right to the edit box. I'm see if I can shorten it a little. I'm more concerned with people complaining my user page one isn't appropriate with the blinking. Technical 13 (talk) 00:41, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Erm.. I'm unsure if this is because of my browser settings or what, but I don't see any blinking. nerdfighter 18:04, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Are you looking at my Userpage notice or my Talkpage notice. Note, some browsers don't render blinking and most of the ones that do allow you to turn it off. Also, I've tried to shorten the talk page one a little, is that better? Technical 13 (talk) 18:41, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Meh, I'm ok with the notices, but if someone has a problem with either of them, just change it. Not something to row with them over   nerdfighter 18:53, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Actually, I have a question for you: You're good with templates right? I am making a template: template:aka and I want to add a variable so if aka=y "better known as" will change to "also known as". How would I do that? nerdfighter 18:53, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Well, you would probably do it the simplest way using yesno as {{yesno|{(default value)}|yes=also known as|no=better known as}} Technical 13 (talk) 19:29, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
on a semi-related topic could one of you help me with page/talk page edit notices? I want the one nerdfighter has on his talk page, and one that askes people not to edit my user page. also couldyou help me archive my talk page (its getting rather long)? Thanks for all the help! p.s. I'm a host at the Teahouse! -- Lee Tru. 21:41, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply
Great to hear you are a host! Sure, I'll set you up with the edit notice :) nerdfighter 22:42, 21 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Block appeal of User:Lucretius

edit

I thought it might be helpful for me - I think I am a reputable editor whose record here of good-faith and non-disruptive editing is unimpeachable - to raise some questions about your quite summary response to the admittedly cantankerous unblock request of User:Lucretius. This user went serially through several identities (user accounts) on English Wikipedia. The SPI seems to have found that this violated SP policy and justified an indefinite ban.

On the other hand, it should be pointed out that the user is 100% correct in asserting that he always publicly announced his change of identity on his user pages, and also brought it up in discussions. Certainly I, and I believe the majority of active subject editors in Classics, was always aware of these shifts, even if they had the potential to confuse the more casual participant in the encyclopedia's work. The user's consistent announcement of identity-change information shows to my satisfaction, beyond any doubt, that in fact the changes of identity were not motivated by any intent to deceive. Under these circumstances, I have been very surprised that, instead of a permanent ban for sock-puppetry, the user could not be given a six-month ban (time served at this point) conditional on a promise to stay confined to one user account for the perpetual future. In fact, there may have been an attempt to get him to pursue such a solution, but it was half-hearted and easily defeated by the user's indignant self-defense. The problem is that the self-defense did have some real merit behind it, and we should probably decide on the merits instead of based on whether we like the kind of noise that's being blown at us by a user with strong feelings.

Like anyone who has dealt with this user, I have had a checkered experience and seen aspects of his editing that seemed less than productive - I would be the last person to assert that he is a paragon of the Wikipedian ethos. However, he has also brought knowledge, passion, and hard work to improving the encyclopedia. If the community had held a discussion about his disruptive editing and handed out a commensurate block penalty, you would not be hearing any protest from me. However, the narrow sockpuppet issue seems to have been misused in my opinion, and Wikipedia would do credit to itself if it allowed this user to continue to edit in a single account (since he never used multiple accounts duplicitously) and deal with any non-sockpuppet issues that continue to arise in his editing under their own heading.

This user has not made it easy for administrators to be on his side. That's why I'm writing this. I think it's a case where, to treat him on the merits, we have to ignore his ranting and raving and versifying a bit, and look carefully at the substance. Perhaps that's an unearned indulgence, but it would speak well to the culture of fairness at Wikipedia if we could do it. I'm a bit disengaged from Wikipedia right now, but I have long experience of Wikipedia and of this editor in particular, and I hope this note is enough to make some review on the merits take place - if not by you, then perhaps you can hand it up to some other administrators who you feel could reconsider a tough case in a way that would earn the respect of all observers.

Respectfully yours and with best regards, Wareh (talk) 15:24, 25 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Hello Wareh   I completely understand your thoughts on the matter. The reason I declined is because his unblock request was primarily denying what he did was against policy. These kinds of requests are usually declined. However, if he chooses to make another unblock request that acknowledges where he erred, I'm sure an administrator will read it and accept the request. I hope you and he understand. I will leave a talkback notice on his talk so he sees this response. Cheers nerdfighter 15:37, 25 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Your signature, friendly advice

edit
Hey Nf, I'm looking at your signature, and see some broken html elements/ poorly formed css. Currently, I see:
<b><font color=#088A08>nerd</font color=#088A08><font color=#0489B1>fighter</font color=#0489B1></b>
To have an HTML strict compatible signature, might I suggest changing it to:
<span style="color:#088A08;">nerd</span><span style="color:#0489B1;">fighter</span>
The font element is deprecated in HTML 4.0 Transitional, invalid in HTML 4.0 Strict, and not part of HTML5. Using to wrap bold is one character lighter on your end and the MW core changes it anyways. Lastly, closing tags shouldn't have any attributes. Technical 13 (talk) 17:53, 28 April 2013 (UTC)Reply

Here is my CVUA page. Here is what I would like to learn
 • 1. What is not vandalism. I occasionally label things as vandalism when it is really a disruptive edit or on occasion, an actual constructice edit. It may seem like a basic that any person should know, but I fight vandalism so much that I accidentally label other things as so.
 • 2. I would also like to learn the proper use of various tools. Currently, I use Twinkle.
