While I'm not sure the vandalism tag is appropriate, I do think the article should be a redlink (for now). I intended to delete under R3 - Implausible typo - as it appeared to be a village in a region of France, but redirected to another such village. A redirect to a regional subdivision would be appropriate, but not to a similar but unrelated jurisdiction - the rule of thumb I was taught is that we redirect up, not sideways. Sorry for any confusion. UltraExactZZ Claims ~ Evidence 13:34, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, wrong csd tag was inserted...should have been {{db-g6}}, Apologies!, --Badgernet (talk) 13:39, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
Ultraexactzz: Thank you for your reply. According to your definition, the redirect was appropriate: Castelbouc is a village part of the commune of Sainte-Enimie. It was in fact redirecting up and not sideway. The commune in France is a territorial subdivision, which typically covers several villages in rural areas. If you look at the French Wikipedia, you will see that Castelbouc is described within the Sainte-Enimie article [1]. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 13:45, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply
I've restored the redirect - that's my dumb fault, I read that the target was "...a village..." in France, and that the map appeared to note the village, and didn't catch that the target is actually "...a village and commune...", which makes it an OK redirect. I also restored the one below, on the same basis. Again, sorry for any confusion. UltraExactZZ Claims ~ Evidence 13:52, 26 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

You are now a Reviewer edit

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 20:18, 15 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Wan Chai edit

Hi Underwater! If you don't mind, I'd like to explain a few things:

  • Your edit summary was "we are not going to list each of the 10,000+ company's offices located in Wan Chai. This is an encyclopedia, not a business directory nor a phone book"
  • 1. It is possible to encyclopedically mention the major companies occupying a neighborhood or district of a major city. You may want to see what I started at Downtown Houston#Economy - Business related newspapers and general newspapers talk about office leasing matters all the time so such things can be encyclopedically mentioned.
  • 2. "10,000+ company's offices" - But how do we know that there are that many? Do you have reliable sources that state this? Who says it?
  • 3. The only businesses to be considered are Wikipedia-notable businesses and that includes major international airlines
  • My strategy is to start a section and build it up. When it becomes too big is when one decides "okay, what's more important and what isn't"

I would like the section to be restored, with an {{expand section|}} tag to make it clear that it's incomplete. WhisperToMe (talk) 18:54, 14 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Wan Chai is a major business area in Hong Kong, which is one of the world's main business centres. Just to name a few, Central Plaza, Hong Kong (78 floors of offices), Three Pacific Place (40 floors of offices), Hopewell Centre, Hong Kong (64 floors of office), Shui On Centre (35 floors of offices) and MLC Tower (40 floors of offices) are located in Wan Chai. Major banks and multinational companies have their offices there. It is safe to say that you would need to list dozens if not hundreds of companies before reaching the level of relevance of "MIAT Mongolian Airlines's Hong Kong Branch Office" that was the one you listed, and for the record, was the only one listed at all when I made my comment. Now, given its importance, it makes sense to have an "Economy" section added to the Wan Chai article, which is a fairly decent one. Maybe starting with one single company, which will most probably not make the cut in the end, compared to others to be listed, was not the most engaging way to start it. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 19:13, 14 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
What may help would be - which companies have their head offices in Wan Chai? Or - Who are the largest employers? If I knew which major HK companies were HQed there, I could start with that. I could use their "Contact Us" sections to source the business addresses.
While usually major companies are headquartered in, say, a city's CBD, this isn't always the case. For instance while Auckland CBD had a lot of operations, in 2004, of New Zealand's largest companies, only Air New Zealand was headquartered there.
WhisperToMe (talk) 19:22, 14 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
Most large companies in Hong Kong have their offices in Central, Hong Kong (Hong Kong's CBD), Admiralty, Hong Kong, Sheung Wan, Wan Chai, Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui and West Kowloon (International Commerce Centre). All these areas are geographically very close to each other. Regarding the economy of Wan Chai, I would say that, in addition to offices, retail and hospitality play an important role. Note also the role of the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, located in Wan Chai North. I don't know where to find a list of the main companies headquartered in Wan Chai. The problem is compounded by the fact that, due to highly fluctuating rents, companies in Hong Kong tend to change their office location more than in other cities, and that such a list could become quickly obsolete and hard to maintain. Maybe a way to start a list would be to identify the tenants of the main office buildings of the area. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 20:01, 14 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

At Central,_Hong_Kong#Economy I was able to find three major corporations (all banks) HQed at Central, Hong Kong and started it as an example. I'll also see where the old Cathay Pacific HQ was... WhisperToMe (talk) 04:39, 12 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Sounds good. Some info you might find useful:

  • HSBC is HQed in London, but its CEO moved his office to Hong Kong in 2010 [2]
  • For other companies, you could have a look at Hang Seng Index. A number of the companies in the list should have their HQ in Central
  • The former Cathay Pacific HQ were in Swire House, in Central, not in neighboring Sheung Wan, as the article stated. I have created a link and changed the location in the airline's article. (you may need to download the document to view the pdf given in reference, which clearly gives an address in Central)

Hope this helps. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 05:14, 12 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

You can also see a list of major office buildings in Central here [3]. Most HQs of large companies in Central should be in those buildings. Most of these buildings have an article in the Chinese Wikipedia, which should easily give you some more company names with Google translate. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 05:21, 12 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the help! I'll take a good look at the Hang Seng list and the other stuff :)
BTW I said that Cathay Pacific HQ was in Sheung Wan since, when I put the address of Cathay Pacific Swire House into Google Maps, Google Maps said it was in Sheung Wan. If it's actually in Central, then thanks for correcting it!
WhisperToMe (talk) 06:09, 12 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

Prostitution in Hong Kong article edit

Hi. It's about the Prostitution in Hong Kong article. I had re-inserted the same material you had which the anon user had deleted again. See ersatz-discussion at Talk:Prostitution in Hong Kong. Since you once re-inserted the material which the anon editor deleted, might you have a look at it again? I think the material on "compensated dating" as reported by CNN isn't off-topic and in a category of its own as a trend. User:108.67.153.215 keeps removing the material and also keeps blanking his talk page to get rid of vandalism warnings in 2010 by other editors. Also the anonymous editor wrote as his summary of reversion:

  • 23:06, 1 November 2011‎ 108.67.153.215 (talk)‎ (17,771 bytes) (→Types and venues: See talk page, this clearly doesn't belong, reverting and making bad faith accusations is not constructive.) (undo)

"Bad faith accusations"??? I have no idea what the editor is talking about. We had no dialogue ever before that reversion. Unless he's talking about a previous re-insertion of the material by you?:

  • 16:27, 31 October 2011‎ Underwaterbuffalo (talk | contribs)‎ (18,375 bytes) (Undid revision 458309841 by 108.67.153.215 (talk) There are better things to do than just deleting content you don't like. HINT: For instance, you can fix it.) (undo)

Thanks and bests. --- (Bob) Wikiklrsc (talk) 06:19, 2 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the notice. The result in the article looks OK to me now. That's a fairly sensitive topic, and the slight overreaction of the anon user is probably a consequence of this. Thanks for rewriting the part. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 12:18, 4 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Certainly. Best wishes. --- (Bob) Wikiklrsc (talk) 00:08, 6 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

Bridges Street edit

I'm not sure I agree with the your deprod rationale. I appreciate your examining the Hong Kong road articles with a critical eye, and also your effort in improving Tin Chiu Street‎. I use the term 'stub' in a broad sense and not just raw wordcount, I meant an article containing directly relevant material. Bridges is a short road, and there is little on its colonial history; most of the material in that article is a coatrack. Of course, if there are notable landmarks, these ought to have separate articles: it's not an argument for keeping an article because notability isn't inherited. Just because an important landmark is situated on a particular street doesn't necessarily confer sufficient notability onto the road in question. There may be case for exception where many important landmarks are on the same road, like Rue Lepic. Having said that, I'm prepared to accept that there is much more to be dug up on this road and its importance to the colonial history, so I will accept it should exist. I must have prodded 80% of the articles in the above category, so would appreciate it if you could examine them in due course. --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 04:21, 28 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

A road is made of asphalt and the buildings surrounding it. Regarding the Bridges Street article, on which I have spent quite a bit of time in the past, I can say at the very least that 3 buildings deserve mention: the Chinese YMCA of Hong Kong, the Bridges Street Market and the American Congregational Mission Preaching House, which was previously located at the same location. Plus the Sun Yat-Sen connection. None of these 3 buildings has its own article now, and considering the dynamics of Hong Kong related articles in the English Wikipedia, it could take another 5 years before they do, if they ever do. In the meantime, the Bridges Street article is a very acceptable location for gathering content about these buildings. Erasing the Bridges Street article now would just erase the material we have about the buildings. Also, since I have spent time working on this article in the past, I have realized that there is a potential to add more to this article, with very decent references. By de-proding the article, I would like to give more time to see this article being improved, in the spirit of WP:TIND. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 10:33, 28 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Just to avoid your being surprised: I had a look at the list of articles that you have proded. I will go through them again carefully and you can expect me to deprod about 10 of them (out of about 80) for generally similar reasons. I trust that you will understand my rationale. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 10:42, 28 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
  • It would only be surprising to see more than a handful of them being deprodded. I welcome your scrutiny of the prods, as people like yourself may be more tuned into the topic area and will be able to improve these quite a bit more easier than me. Regards, --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 14:31, 28 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Well, I have seen you do some great work on Hong Kong built heritage articles. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 16:42, 28 January 2012 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. That effort serves to demonstrate that I care about creating quality articles that are on worthy subjects, and that I'm not attempting to delete a large number of articles willy-nilly. But I also have in mind the concerns of fellow wikipedia editors as to what is notable, a large number of the articles I prodded seem not to be. Maybe I just don't know where to look for information on street articles. Deryck informs me there was a certain publication which may serve as a reference, but it seems to be a printed work. --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 00:36, 29 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

Lam Kam Road / User:Ohconfucius edit

Could you stop him? He's killing articles around, and one of such an article is Lam Kam Road, a major road linking up Tai Po, Lam Tsuen, Pat Heung and Kam Tin. It isn't quite possible to undo every single edit of him. 218.250.159.25 (talk) 19:06, 9 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Another such article is Cheung Pei Shan Road. It's a six-lane expressway and part of Route 9. 218.250.159.25 (talk) 19:07, 9 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Hi. When you recently edited Queen's Road East, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Kennedy Road (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). York Road, and so on.. edit

Is there any thing that we can do to stop User:Ohconfucius? He's ProD-ing and AfD-ing too many notable articles.. from York Road, Kam Tin Road, Cheung Pei Shan Road (part of Route 9 and a six-lane expressway) to 9 Queens Road Central. 147.8.202.87 (talk) 12:33, 28 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

The pace of AfD's and PROD's has been a bit high, but it is manageable now. The best thing to do is to improve the articles and take part in the discussions. If articles are deleted, then part of the material can be included in an article about the area, or the Route. Turning articles into redirects is also an option. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 12:47, 28 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
I looked at the Article alert archive and there were a huge number of articles that he had brought to AfD or ProD. Same of those articles should actually be undeleted. 147.8.202.87 (talk) 12:56, 28 February 2012 (UTC)Reply
I did not identify any deleted article that was worth keeping. If you feel that a decision to delete should be overturned, there is a process for this. See Wikipedia:Deletion review. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 13:00, 28 February 2012 (UTC)Reply

Proposed deletion of Rowena King edit

The article Rowena King has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Nothing here to provide evidence of notability. Only ref is a unreliable web site.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Shek Chung Au moved to draftspace edit

An article you recently created, Shek Chung Au, is not suitable as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. –Kammilltalk⟩ 18:37, 28 February 2021 (UTC)Reply

I must admit I'm a bit puzzled about this.

"Chinese: 圍下??"

According to the pdf file you used as a reference, it would appear that it should be either 元嶺 or 元嶺村

Your thoughts about this?

Pete AU aka --Shirt58 (talk) 10:39, 7 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

You are right, that's a mistake. Thanks for the note! I have changed the Chinese name to 元嶺葉屋, which is the one mentioned at the bottom of the HK government doc that I have linked. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 21:28, 7 November 2021 (UTC)Reply

Autopatrolled and unreferenced articles edit

There was a discussion at WT:PERM about a user whose autopatrolled flag I removed. Among other concerns, that user was creating unreferenced articles. To justify this sloppiness, the user then produced a list of unreferenced articles created by users who have the autopatrolled flag. Pierre Pasquier (colonial administrator), recently created by you, is on this list. The affair has made its way to the Administrators' noticeboard so there may be further scrutiny going forward.

Please let me give a reminder what autopatrolled is for: this is a flag given to users who consistently create clean articles that do not require review by others. Should maintenance flags like "unreferenced" be required, this does not meet the requirements for autopatrolled. Could I thus ask you that you go please back to articles that you have recently created with a view of ensuring that any issues raised in maintenance tags (whether placed already or potentially needed) be addressed? And going forward, that you please ensure that new articles are clean so that they don't require review by others? Please feel free to ask questions. Here's good; please ping me if you do. Schwede66 23:24, 30 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the heads up. I will check past articles created and add references if none is present. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 13:38, 31 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Also thanks for the clarification of the 'autopatrolled' status. I will keep it in mind and make sure that future articles I create are duly referenced. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 14:35, 31 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Speedy deletion nomination of Wo Hang (disambiguation) edit

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Wo Hang (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G14 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates only one extant Wikipedia page and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic);
  • disambiguates zero extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title; or
  • is an orphaned redirect with a title ending in "(disambiguation)" that does not target a disambiguation page or page that has a disambiguation-like function.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.

I've informed you of this because you converted Wo Hang from a disambiguation page into an article. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 20:59, 20 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

I agree with the speedy. Thanks. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 21:32, 20 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Turning a DAB into an article edit

Hi, Underwaterbuffalo. Please don't overwrite a DAB page with an article, unless the DAB page would be eligible for speedy deletion otherwise. Instead, if you think that the subject of the article you want to write is the primary topic for that term, you can move the DAB page to have "(disambiguation)" at the end. So when you turned Wo Hang from a DAB to an article, it would have been better to first move that page to Wo Hang (disambiguation), and then get started on the article at the base title (overwriting the redirect). This is important because otherwise we lose navigational aids for our readers.

In this case, with some HISTSPLIT magic, I've done that for you, so now the original DAB page is at the "(disambiguation)" title while your article remains at the base title. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thanks. :) -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (she|they|xe) 00:53, 21 June 2022 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the effort and the explanation. That's helpful. 06:37, 21 June 2022 (UTC)

Thank you for your tireless (and must I add, very efficient) edits. I was originally going to continue working on the Category:Villages in Hong Kong page, but couldn't because you have already single-handedly cleared the clutter of 500+ pages! 真係所謂嘅摩打手,犀利! Fei Ngo Shan Road edit

Would you have any idea why it was AFDed? 116.92.226.241 (talk) 11:14, 25 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

You can see the AfD discussion here for details. Also the last version of the article before being turned into a redirect is here. There was really nothing much found to be said about the road and the decision was to turn it into a redirect rather than having a near empty article. Note that the article was not deleted. Of course that can always be changed if one can bring content and references. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 12:00, 27 November 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. Would there be any list of AFD'ed or PROD'ed articles about this country? 116.92.226.232 (talk) 09:10, 7 December 2022 (UTC)Reply
You can check Wikipedia:WikiProject Hong Kong/Article alerts for the current list and check the archive links in the top right part of the page. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 15:55, 7 December 2022 (UTC)Reply

Chinese language templates edit

{{lang|zh-Hant|}} has the same function as {{zh|t=|labels=no}}, but the former is preferred over the latter because it is condensed, uses the language rendering format (i.e. lang template), and does not allow for other parameters (e.g. pinyin). Doesn't really matter though, but the former is better. Yue🌙 19:24, 16 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks. I always wondered why there are multiple language templates, which seem to be doing the exact same thing. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 19:26, 16 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Copying within Wikipedia requires attribution (second request) edit

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Ping Shan Heritage Trail into Tang Ancestral Hall (Ping Shan). While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in an edit summary at the page into which you've copied content, disclosing the copying and linking to the copied page, e.g., copied content from [[page name]]; see that page's history for attribution. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to also place a properly formatted {{copied}} template on the talk pages of the source and destination. Please provide attribution for this duplication if it has not already been supplied by another editor, and if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, you should provide attribution for that also. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. — Diannaa (talk) 20:00, 16 July 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thank you for the clarification. Please have a look at the edit history of Tang Ancestral Hall (Ping Shan). The edit summary of the second edit (that I did) reads: "article created with material from Ping Shan Heritage Trail article". I forgot to mention that at the time of the first edit and corrected it at the second. I have now also added a {{copied}} template to the talk pages of both articles. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 07:03, 17 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
Sorry for the oversight. There have been a lot of reports to assess lately and I missed that. — Diannaa (talk) 12:37, 17 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
No problem. It was a good refresher for me and an opportunity to add the {{copied}} template. Underwaterbuffalo (talk) 13:27, 17 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
