Writing Company Pages

I studied Wikipedia's guidelines as well as successful company pages and emulated them for several companies. One remains. The other was deleted. The one that remains was longer and had more product mentions. The one deleted listed facts and backed up any data with footnotes. I ensure there was no marketing speak (premier, leading, etc.) and am not an employee of these companies.

Maybe there's another set of guidelines I missed? I would appreciate advice on how to ensure a company's listings stay when you have competitors not getting deleted. Thanks for providing a valuable service.

Links to years

Hello Nigel,

What's your take on providing links to years? For example, on this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Four_(TVB) The Four (Traditional Chinese: 少年四大名捕) is a TVB costume action series broadcasted in September 2008.

What is the point in linking to 2008 in this piece?

Please comment.

Thanks Nigel. And I need another help in adding internal link to Cryogenic to here:

The_Resurrection_of_Jimber-Jaw

The story turns about an experimental aviator and a cryogenicist.

There is no mention of a cryogenicist in Cryogenic. So, to avoid red links, I just added the definition of a cryogenicist to there.

But, it s not working, I mean I'm unable to link cryogenicist of The_Resurrection_of_Jimber-Jaw to Cryogenic. It's still showing up as a red link. (I removed red link now)

Speedlite merges

I know that so far there seems to be a consensus but 2 days is not a long time and for someone to merge them without actually engaging in the merge discussion when there are only 3 opinions seems a little premature. I think, as I explained to Photoguy, it would be wise to wait a couple more days, its not like any of the articles are facing deletion so there is no rush. Mfield (talk) 21:20, 5 March 2009 (UTC)

Regarding the question I posted yesterday

I thank you for the response posted. Before I get to the question at hand, here's a few details about my dilemma. First, some of the video resources that I plan to use as references are from DVDs that are commercially released. Some of the items are from the videos & DVDs releases that National Geographic has placed on the market. The other DVD source that I want to use comes from the TV series Unsolved Mysteries, which you are aware that the show is available in 6 DVD boxsets. Would I be able to use them? Category:Year of birth unknown

Category:Year of birth unknown reads: "This category (and within its own specific purpose, the analogous Category:Year of death unknown) is intended for use on discussion pages of individuals from antiquity whose year of birth is lost to history and never likely to be known."

I think Lifetime has to stop supporting unknown. It is in my plans to propose it and it's one of the reason that Lifetime should never be used against yob/yod categories. Thanks, Magioladitis (talk) 10:05, 6 March 2009 (UTC)

Hello:

Did you find out about linking specific copy to photos on Commons? I have another question about the "Hopalong Cassidy" page. I am quite knowledgable on the subject (my name is even mentioned on the bottom) and I would like to help improve the status of the page. It would need (in my opinion) a total re-write, which I would gladly do with my limited wiki knowledge, but I don't want to upset the author/editor. I have many photos that could be used here as well, and correct a few factual errors. Any advice?

Hi, I don't think we've met yet! I'm about to nominate User:Tnxman307 for adminship. I'm not sure how well you know this editor but I think you've worked together on the help desk for some time. I can talk about his work at WikiProject Articles for creation but wouldn't be able to say much about the help desk work. If you do know him well, would you consider conominating? Otherwise, perhaps a comment from you about how he might perform as an administator would be helpful. Best wishes, — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 10:21, 9 March 2009 (UTC)

Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics

Hope it is okay for me to leave you a message here. I am new to the Wikipedia world, while you appear to be very seasoned in Wiki-ways. Thanks for your reply to my Help question; I already moved the site yesterday to the title of Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics, which is the name most people would be searching under due to the key words "prosthetics" and "orthotics". I am also modifying the content more today. I included the Management Team as this is something I have seen on other Wikipedia sites; I will reduce it or possibly eliminate it. I am also in the process of adding a couple new references that are intended to help with the "notability" concern on this page. I have modified some of the copy to sound more neutral and less "like an advertisement." I would appreciate any other suggestions you might have. (WBancroft (talk) 13:43, 11 March 2009 (UTC))

Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics

I would like your opinion/thoughts on "notability." The organization I am posting for is notable in many ways. One is their size: the largest provider of prosthetic and orthotic services in the U.S. I am working right now to track down the best possible reference to establish this fact, since I was told by someone else on Wikipedia that the current reference is unacceptable and sounds like "it came from a press release."

The other reason this company is notable is the nature of their work. They literally restore the lives of people who have had limb amputations by fitting them with custom prosthetic limbs. They serve more than 650,000 people a year. Many of their patients are U.S. service members injured in Iraq and Afghanistan, some of whom returned in wheelchairs, missing both legs above the knee. Now these people are back to leading normal lives with the help of prosthetics from this company. Many of their patients compete internationally in the Paralympic Games.

I would like to add some of these very interesting facts into the article, but the article has already been tagged as "sounding like advertising." Do you think that including this type of notable (but also favorable to the company) information would be construed as further advertising? All of it can be substantiated by references to national media coverage (NY Times, USA Today, Today Show, etc..) or to trade publications such as inMotion Magazine or The O&P Edge. Thanks for your time and input. (WBancroft (talk) 16:15, 11 March 2009 (UTC))

Help desk on 1 Feb

Here you explained to User:Knightpriest why the section he wrote was removed, and noted that the page it was copy-vio'd from was now blank. Based on that user's assertions, it seems they are the owner of the webpage from which they took the info, and it's likely they blanked that page in order to avoid claims of copy-vio. There is no third party sourcing for that organization, and nothing that can support notability for it, either.--Vidkun (talk) 17:52, 11 March 2009 (UTC)

Regarding the edit comments

I will admit to the item regarding the WWE pay-per-view event. The quote that I added should have stayed there since people would want to know what exactly Vince McMahon said to Kane & The Undertaker that prompted them to attack him. However, regarding the Roe v. Wade subject, you directed your comments towards the wrong user. Whoever made the editing about that U.S. Supreme Court case used the same IP address as the computer that I'm using right now. So, get your mental circuits back in line & find out who the imposter was that used this computer to post the wrong facts about that case. In other words, get your facts straight before accusing anyone of posting the wrong facts in any article. That's all I'm saying, & I'm sure others who help with contributing to Wikipedia would feel the same way. Frostviper (talk) 02:23, 12 March 2009 (UTC)Frostviper

Dear Nigel,

Thanks for creating a user subpage. Well, I should now look for reliable sources - to include the company's significance. And, we cannot pick that from that company's own website. Can we? I also have a question for you - if for some reason it's deleted from Wiki, is it possible to create a new one? Or will Wiki ban the entry for ever? That's my concern.

Headings on page

I am asking that you review the headings on Harry Dennis (musician) page which states that the content needs more verification and that there appears to be a conflict of interest. I apologize if I sound redundant, but I have posted this question in a couple of places and no response as of yet. These headings have been there for awhile and no one else has added any content. The information was gleamed from information on the internet and interviews with the artist. I have inserted links to verify his music contributions. Can you help me with this or direct me on what to do next? Appreciate it. --DA01 00:02, 14 March 2009 (UTC) 13 March 2009 —Preceding unsigned comment added by DA01 (talkcontribs)

Mason Williams, A Gift Of Song

Thank you Ukexpat for the welcome and for the answer to my inquiry. This is my first time here of course, and find it quite daunting to say the least. I'll look for the article's talk page as you suggested. However, If I may, some clarification. I'm not promoting this in the sense of any gain...other than providing information, within the article, that I think fans of Mason Williams would want; more or less a courtesy. Cannot the information I provided from the label, along with my physical possession of the record, represent "reliable source.? The record does exist, it is Mason Williams, and I provided all information/credit from the label. Only asking out of ignorance of parameters here, please understand. This is an exceedingly beautiful piece of work, the epitome of the message, "A Gift of Song, is a Gift of Love....". The quote is part of the first line of lyrics. I just think it would great for his fans to hear, if it is available anywhere. Again, Thank you so much for your help.--Butchwhitmon (talk) 19:05, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Birth/death templates

Hi. I saw your comment here at AN/I regarding date linking. I answered more extensively regarding my concerns (they have become many regarding this). One of my concerns is that through what has happened to put these new templates into the MOS and his endeavors since to disseminate the new templates into the infoboxes of a myriad of project infoboxes, he's first done an end-run around the proper MOS change process and then, after I really thought about it, realized that if the arbcom decision on date linking is to allow it, there is no easy to fix the linking. The old templates don't currently link dates, but to change that, only the main {{birth date}}, {{death date}} templates themselves need to be changed. With the new one, an addition parameter had to be added to the template which just takes the antiquated form of adding [[March 20, 2009]] to the end of it. That is a user option with no guarantee an editor will add it. I mean, why would they need to in a new and improved template? There is no other way to adjust the new template to auto-link. So if arbcom says go ahead, link, each and every one of the new templates will have to be checked and hand changed. Right now he's put the template into over 2500 articles. He first gave argument that his changes would allow microformatting data to be emitted and he was just adding the new template to a few articles to study how it works. The microformatting change was already done and it made no changes to how the already existing templates were used or how they work. The suggestions he made to MOSNUM were actually for changes to {{start date}} and {{end date}} templates and a lot of his talk concerned time zones and the hours and minutes of the day. He did not discuss birth/death templates. Even if birth/death templates were a growth from start/end dates, there is little no valid application for time zone or hour/day in a birth/death date template. Anyway, my concern ended up also being that since the templates themselves can't be adapted for linking and he's managed to manipulate a change in MOS and infoboxes, this violates the arbcom injunction against changes or editing that massively results in delinking. Hopefully that answers your question, and I'm sorry if I got too involved. I don't know anything about coding and it has taken me a few days to learn enough about what has gone on and what has been changed and the implications of it that each time I explain it again, it just clarifies it for me. Thanks. Wildhartlivie (talk) 08:17, 20 March 2009 (UTC)

Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics

Hello. You helped me once before, so since I had a question, thought I'd start with you. The article I created, Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics is still tagged as a notability concern and as "written like an ad." Since those tags were placed at the start of the article, it has been shortened and objectified considerably. So, how can I get the tag "written like an ad" removed? Regarding the notability concern, although I think the references are acceptable, I am still researching to locate what would be considered a "reliable third party." So even tho I'd like that tag removed, I understand why it is there. However, once I add a "reliable third party" reference, how can I get the notability tag removed? I respectfully agree with you. This is how it seems Wikipedia works. Our friend, a CEO, President/exporter of a Philippine multi-awarded coconut charcoal bricks, had registered here but could not reveal his name for security reason (due to magnitude of his business). His user name was declared suspected sock puppet of this controversial Filipino jurist, Floro, Jr. We are not concerned about their in-fightings here, since, we believe and are informed, that it is high-level, meaning, therefore, that top Philippine jurists were offended and even met dire pains; my godfather, a Philippine Justice had confided to me that, about 10 Justices had instructed some of their peers to look for Wikipedians to shut down Floro, Jr.; thus, they put up a fight to block the guy, who never ever even appealed. Floro, Jr.'s accounts, per our info, had been used by others he trusted, and they did not appeal, much less edited here nor in Wikinews. For example: X, a Filipino, had registered a username in the same public Internet Cafe with same IP address that Floro, Jr. used, like in Netopia, in Bulacan. Then, Floro, Jr. is charged with sockpuppetry. We had intelligence reports that here in Wikipedia, there was a group that was used to block any and all attempts to edit about this guy or on his subject. In line with this, we repeat that we fully agree with your stance on the success of any appeal. Thanks for hearing from you, and if you wish to submit an enlightening rejoinder hereunder, we will await it in due course. Thanks for your time.--58.69.139.52 (talk) 08:25, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Stephano Sabetti review

I've sent a couple of messages to you, having made the suggested changes to the article. I've tried to remove any subjective tone that gives it an infomercial feel, added inline citations from sources that addressed only Sabetti, removed references to his works in the article, and cut it to bare bones. I understand if you've tired of this article, and so I would just ask that you let me know either way. I value your input as you are a copy editor, and you've been extremely gracious to me. If you'd rather not comment anymore, I guess I'll just try the help desk. I hope you have the time/patience, but... Thanks again for all your help!! --LEMspare (talk) 11:48, 28 March 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for all your help on the Sally Pierone page. I really appreciate it. I notice it still has a reference to being an "orphan," even though I have over 20 other articles linked to it. Is that enough to remove the orphan notice? Again, I really appreciate your help! GramEdit (talk) 21:45, 30 March 2009 (UTC)

Navbox for Rice residential colleges

Hello, I added the residential colleges to the primary Rice University navbox and left a note at Talk:Wiess College but I don't think anyone noticed. Should we remove the colleges from the primary navbox now that it is duplicated? Let me know. Thanks! Postoak (talk) 01:56, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

The new changes you made to the primary box look great. Do we need both boxes now? Postoak (talk) 02:08, 31 March 2009 (UTC)
I added the colleges earlier today, but I thought you tweaked it. Anyway, we'll use the main box. Thanks, Postoak (talk) 02:27, 31 March 2009 (UTC)

SpamFest?

This is regarding the Long Tail Magic page. It is a software being used by internet marketers. It is a product developed by a small company that competes with Google Analytics. How is it a SPAM ?

Do you guys get Kicks out of just throwing words at others?

Compare Long Tail Magic with Google Analytics and tell me what you think.

They are products of the same league. One by a company that makes billions of dollars, and one by a struggling company. So you prefer pushing the developing companies down rather than encouraging them to keep up with the competition.

And if I am wrong, tell me what can I specifically do to make this page meet your expectations. (Specifically).

Re: SpamFest?

I will re-write the software specs and get back to you.

Thanks for your feedback. I hope I could get this and other products listed which is important as the big companies get themselves totally visible all over the world and the small ones are filtered and not given the visibility. This results in the big companies getting bigger and the smaller companies just dying out. You might not understand this, but if you do, I need not say anything further.

Cheers

I have a picture, public domain, uploaded to commons (Colorado & Southern 890) that I want to display in the article "General Electric U30C locomotive).

I see that in editing it has the format image.jpg but I can't get it displayed in the article.

I've also tried to drag and drop but that doesn't work.

Sir Tristram

I've removed the CSD tag, the criteria you added was simply ridiculous. Any image could be tagged that you don't believe the uploader owns the copyright. Unless you have evidence of a copyright violation the CSD criteria clearly do not apply. Please note raised this at AN/I hereJustin talk 21:10, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

I took it to AN/I more to log my actions in removing the CSD tag than any attempt at censuring you. I notified you of the thread as a courtesy. There was not intention to upset you and if I have I apologise. Peace? Justin talk 21:29, 2 April 2009 (UTC)
No worries, text is a poor medium for conveying intentions, you don't have the full understanding of communication without the body language to accompany it. Misunderstanding are all too easy. As Spike Milligan used to say, love, light, peace. Justin talk 21:38, 2 April 2009 (UTC)

Response on SPAM

I've looked at the response you gave to me including http://benrandall.co.uk/bridging_loan_finance_guide.aspx as a reference and I wanted to confirm that if I make the information into a PDF document or edit the web page above to include no adverts or offers of service it would be acceptable? - I'm half way through creating the additional entries of 'Open Bridging Finance' and 'Closed Bridging Finance' (it's taken me ages!) and don't want my efforts to be for nothing by my references being classed as SPAM.

I felt the content of the above web page included information that was more accurate and up to date than the actual 'Bridge Loan' entry. Please can you confirm the restrictions I should apply so I can have an entry created that will remain and not even be remotely associated with SPAM

Thanks in advance

piped wikilinks on disambiguation pages...

I have asked another contributor to the Shahzada page to note what Wikipedia:Disambiguation has to say about piped wikilinks:

"Do not pipe disambiguation links. Showing the entire linked article title avoids confusion, which is the reason for the link in the first place."

Your revision also employs a piped wikilink.

Cheers! Geo Swan (talk) 01:00, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

I disagree with him. I don't believe above statement in regard to pipe disambiguation does necessarily refer to your revision. Don't you think? I would appreciate if you clarify it. I believe that the word Shahzada should be linked to its subpage as it is linked. Kind regards Parvazbato59 (talk) 03:53, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Societas Rosicruciana

Hi, you were involved, slightly, in this one before, so I'd like to ask your help in explaining the problem to User:Knightpriest: This user keeps trying to add information on a group without any third party references, making me question its notability/existence, outside of the minds of its own members. Here he tried to add reference material to cite the creation of the group in 2008, from material published in 1987. Additionally he states: I cannot provide references or documentary evidence to back up our existence, as there are none unless you can take my word for it.--Vidkun (talk) 14:11, 3 April 2009 (UTC)

Hello Ukexpat

Thanks for your note. I'm still trying to work out how to create an article. I've got one 'set up' for John Frederick France which I prepared yesterday and I didn't know how to get it from my user page into live Wikipedia. However today I searched for the same article and it came back with no article existing. So I clicked on the red text and it steered me into editing an article of the same name. I've now copied in my Wikipedia text and saved it. Will this be enough to create my article? Is this the way to do it? Jackross (talk) 15:06, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

John Frederick France

Hi Ukexpat Thanks for the help - it looks good so far. I've added a couple of words and an external link to clarify the sources a bit. I'll need to return and tidy up the external links a tad. The RCS Archive information was sent to me directly from them, so, difficult to quote anything different. Thanks again. Jackross (talk) 17:27, 5 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks Ukexpat for tidying up the article a bit which has helped me understand a few other formatting tools. I've also looked at the format for the Notes and I've added External Links. Is this article acceptable now or is there more work to do? How do I confirm if this is a 'notable' entry or not? The individual concerned was an eminent Ophthalmic Surgeon at Guys. Moving Gerald N. Epstein

Thanks for WP:Move, which I see doesn't seem to give up it's secrets at first glance. Meanwhile, a simpler question, I hope: How do I create a pipe? Edits not saved

The changes I made to the Coca-Cola Enterprises page did not save. What happened? --SNHennessy (talk) 20:42, 8 April 2009 (UTC)

Moving Gerald N. Epstein

Yes, Ukexpat, I'd appreciate your moving the new head, so that this particular Gerald Epstein is not confused with the several others that are around. Yes, too, on the pipe. The shifted slash is one possibility I didn't try. Thanks again. I'll finish my wikilinks today. David Hollidays (talk) 12:46, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Moving Gerald Epstein

Yes, you make perfect sense. Let's let "Gerald Epstein" be, on the basis that his name as it appears in all his books does not contain an "N." -- Incidentally, I tried to redirect "phenomenological" in the Asthma subsection of Research to "phenomenology(psychology)" but "phenomenological" came up red, even though a search for phenomenological brings you to phenomenology, which contains "phenomenology(psychology)." Then I rewrote the sentence using the word "phenomenology" and tried to redirect it to "phenomenology(psychology)," but this time "phenomenology" turned up red -- though there is a phenomenology page. Am I missing some subtlety? David Hollidays (talk) 19:37, 9 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for showing me how to format a piped link. I followed the model and succeeded in providing a link for "free association." As the saying goes, God is in the details, and I seem regularly to overlook the applicable detail! David Hollidays (talk) 14:34, 10 April 2009 (UTC)

Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics

Hello and thanks for removing the tags at the top of the article. Based on my note on the editor assistance page, did you look at the revised version of the article on my user subpage? I found what I consider to be more credible references and also added some information on notable patients, each with verifiable references included.

I'm pleased the article as it stands right now is clear of all tags, however, I want to make the revisions/additions to the article as shown on my user subpage. Would this result in being re-tagged? Rename: Powell Motor Company TO Powell Manufacturing Company

Hi. Just trying to correct an error to my family's business name! I can find lots of outside references. Here are a couple:

NEW YORK TIMES: http://www.nytimes.com/2004/02/16/automobiles/name-is-familiar-truck-is-not.html?n=Top/Reference/Times%20Topics/Subjects/T/Trucks%20and%20Trucking states: "Powell: From 1954-56, the Powell Manufacturing Company in Compton, Calif., made a small pickup based on Plymouth components."

WEBSITE ALL ABOUT PLYMOUTHS (included because the Powell truck used a Plymouth chassis and motor):

http://www.allpar.com/old/powell.html By Jim Benjaminson; courtesy of the Plymouth Bulletin. For more details, see Plymouth, 1946-1959 the author writes: "Channing Powell is still alive; while the original Powell Manufacturing Company ... the Powell brothers created a new company to build motor scooters again, though not in Compton. The Powell family owns one of the three motor homes as well as a Sport Wagon pickup. The brothers died in 1978 and 1988."

I've also got many company documents, records, etc.

P.S. -perhaps a "redirect" to "Powell Manufacturing Company" would be helpful.

External links

It seems you have deleted my external link. I was wondering why? I have already had this problem before and another admin suggested that the only way I could use my external references was to refer directly to the page instead of the web sites themselves otherwise it seems as I am trying to promote them, so that is what I did. I would really like to include my references because they have much more information for those that are interested in learning more about nanoindenters. There is far too much information to put on that page. The other admin said that would be fine. Please tell me how I can add my external links/references without you all, always deleting them. I have already read all the rules and guidelines on external links, so I dont see the problem. Volvera215 (talk) 16:51, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for your welcome message

Ukexpat,

Thanks for the welcome message and for sending the links for all the information on how to be a useful member of the Wikipedia volunteer family. I'm having a blast! I've been writing books and articles for more than 25 years (3 books, about 65 articles, editor of four journals and over 200 book reviews published), but making my little improvement to the Blackfeet article gave me as great a feeling as anything I've ever written.

I've been a degreed librarian for 29 years, so I have strong feelings about the freedom of access to information. I recently read the book Wikipedia Revolution by Lih and have become fired up about this project. I agree with the concept of Wikipedia and, frankly, I'm in awe of what has been accomplished. Expect me to be an active contributor from now on. I'll be bold, but if I screw up I hope someone will pick me up, dust me off and give me some good advice.

By the way, I know it's technically a no-no, but my real name is Bryan Johnson, the author/compiler of one of the bibliographies listed in the Blackfeet article. I'm working on a second edition of the bibliography, along with a slew of other writing projects.

Thanks again.

Correction to Pio Pico page

Thanks for correcting the external link citation. I was not certain how to do that correctly. When I went to your home page I saw that your "sandbox" pages were visible. I thought these were for "practice" and that they would only be accessible to the user who created them. Is there a way to have "private pages" for such practice? How do I create more than one sandbox? Should I have a new sandbox for each new revision I am proposing or just make the changes within the actual article page?--Samson22911 (talk) 01:46, 15 April 2009 (UTC)
