Bison edit

I will not nitpick details any more, but I am going to say only this.

I should not have replaced bison with bisons, as "bison" is an accepted plural word for bison and I have only seen this recently.

Bison and bisons are both correct and this is confirmed in several dictionaries.

ArbCom 2017 election voter message edit

Hello, Tide rolls. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2017 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 3 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

Response edit

In response to the message you left on my talk page, I respectfully disagree. It is more important to avoid providing obviously incorrect information / misinformation, than it is to follow some "policy" on providing so-called references, which may, or may not, be scientifically correct, depending upon the age of the material in question. Therefore, I regard the failure to obtain consensus or to state a valid objective FACT that may support contradictory to my edit to be outright vandalism, where the challenger fails to obtain consensus. Especially, where the revisionist was clearly attempting to elicit a negative response. Mind you, this is my interpretation of policy, where policy appears to contradict itself at best, in my opinion. So, again, I reiterate the fact that I respectfully disagree with everything you have to say on the topic. That said, it is still clearly WRONGFUL to modify other people's edits without at least having brought any issues to their attention FIRST. (Thats called having basic RESPECT for others!) Therefore, this guy was clearly in the wrong, either way you want to look at it. 108.201.29.108 (talk) 01:37, 29 December 2017 (UTC)Reply

  • Community ban discussions must now stay open for at least 24 hours prior to being closed.

Appreciate your explanation. You gave a much better explanation than the other editor for why we should not use flags in the climate article. His or her best explanation for why we should not use flags...it's too much clutter. So he/she unilaterally decided to undo about an hour's worth of work because he/she felt it was too "cluttered". Mad Max video game edit

User DasallmächtigeJ[6] is stating the on Mad Max video game page that's it's both a prequel and a sequel to Fury Road[7], however the source links on the page don't support that claim.

  • "A Mad Max game is coming, but it's not going to be related to any of the movies, because of Avalanche's radical position that movie tie-ins are pretty terrible."
  • "A Mad Max game is in development, but don't call it a movie tie-in. Developer Avalanche Studios is making it clear that their upcoming game, based on the long-standing franchise, is not tied to any of the films, particularly the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road."[8]
  • "The studio is very clear that this game is in no way associated with the upcoming Mad Max: Fury Road movie starring Tom Hardy, that it is very much an original, standalone story, set in a standalone world."[9]

The official comic book doesn't show the events of the video game[10] and the Mad Max wiki doesn't use the events of the game on the character's page, "Do not put information from the video game. It is not canon.".[11]

DasallmächtigeJ is not only putting in his opinions on the page but links to opinions from people who didn't work on the game and had nothing to do with it.108.208.136.214 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 10:08, 20 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

For the record, I expanded the article with several sources on how the film and the game are connected. The user appears to be some sort of errate fan, his only excuse for removing my content is that it a.) doens't appear in a comic book (because obviously you put out a comic book with the exact same content as a game and of course they can't have two separate stories) and his assertion that b.) because the developers stated that it is not a frame-by-frame reproduction of the movie it of course cannot be a prequel. I tried to reason with him, but he simply reverted the edit and cleaned his talk page. I actually don't like doing this, but I will have to report him now and suggest to protect the page.--DasallmächtigeJ (talk) 14:25, 20 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
  • User DasallmächtigeJ is still not providing any real proof from the studio, the developer or from George Miller himself that would backup his claim that's it's connected to the film. The video game's story doesn't even fit Fury Road or any past Mad Max film. Mad had a baby boy, not a preteen girl, Glory in the game isn't the same from the movie and comic book (written by Miller). Max meets her and her mother differently, the car he has at the end of the game is not the same as the one seen at the beginning of Fury Rad. Like I said, user DasallmächtigeJ is just using a review's opinion and speculation, that's not how wikipedia articles work. The way he's editing the page, it doesn't make any sense, it's not connected the film... and yet... it somewhat is...108.208.136.214 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 09:04, 21 April 2018 (UTC)Reply

News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2018).

  ChochopkCoffeeGryffindorJimpKnowledge SeekerLankiveilPeridonRjd0060

  Guideline and policy news

  • The ability to create articles directly in mainspace is now indefinitely restricted to autoconfirmed users.
  • A proposal is being discussed which would create a new "event coordinator" right that would allow users to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit.

  Technical news

  • AbuseFilter has received numerous improvements, including an OOUI overhaul, syntax highlighting, ability to search existing filters, and a few new functions. In particular, the search feature can be used to ensure there aren't existing filters for what you need, and the new equals_to_any function can be used when checking multiple namespaces. One major upcoming change is the ability to see which filters are the slowest. This information is currently only available to those with access to Logstash.
  • When blocking anonymous users, a cookie will be applied that reloads the block if the user changes their IP. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. This currently only occurs when hard-blocking accounts.

Seeking advice on possible socking(?) at Battle of Ia Drang edit

Hi. Last year you blocked User:Dino nam for edit warring. That I know of, this user was involved in a protracted dispute over at Battle of Ia Drang with User:Tnguyen4321. That user is now subject to a restriction on editing the article. Since October last year, new user Special:Contributions/Day_to_day has been sporadically editing the article with what looks to me like the same agenda as Dino nam. Day to day has only ever edited this article. I don't actually necessarily disagree with this person's edits, but if he is a sock of banned user Dino nam, then in all fairness they should not be allowed to stand. I don't know how to go about confirming these suspicions. Could you advise what I should do, please? Thanks. Factotem (talk) 17:25, 15 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Factotem, thanks for your message. I agree that the circumstances are suspicious but I have not seen enough behavioral similarities to convince myself of the possibility that the two accounts are operated by the same individual. I also agree that Tnguyen4321 should not be penalized by their commitment to stay away from the article. I would offer this option: gather some diffs that demonstrate your concern and file a report at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations. The procedure is relatively easy to execute. That way you will be able to obtain more input. Thanks for the help with the article; don't worry, it's still on my watchlist. Tiderolls 18:31, 15 May 2018 (UTC)Reply

  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build granular types of blocks in 2018 (e.g. a block from uploading or editing specific pages, categories, or namespaces, as opposed to a full-site block). Feedback on the concept may be left at the talk page.
  • There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
  • It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.

  Arbitration

  • A recent technical issue with the Arbitration Committee's spam filter inadvertently caused all messages sent to the committee through Wikipedia (i.e. Special:EmailUser/Arbitration Committee) to be discarded. If you attempted to send an email to the Arbitration Committee via Wikipedia between May 16 and May 31, your message was not received and you are encouraged to resend it. Messages sent outside of these dates or directly to the Arbitration Committee email address were not affected by this issue.

  Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC about the deletion of drafts closed with a consensus to change the wording of WP:NMFD. Specifically, a draft that has been repeatedly resubmitted and declined at AfC without any substantial improvement may be deleted at MfD if consensus determines that it is unlikely to ever meet the requirements for mainspace and it otherwise meets one of the reasons for deletion outlined in the deletion policy.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus that the promising draft template cannot be used to indefinitely prevent a WP:G13 speedy deletion nomination.

  Technical news

  • Starting on July 9, the WMF Security team, Trust & Safety, and the broader technical community will be seeking input on an upcoming change that will restrict editing of site-wide JavaScript and CSS to a new technical administrators user group. Bureaucrats and stewards will be able to grant this right per a community-defined process. The intention is to reduce the number of accounts who can edit frontend code to those who actually need to, which in turn lessens the risk of malicious code being added that compromises the security and privacy of everyone who accesses Wikipedia. For more information, please review the FAQ.
  • Syntax highlighting has been graduated from a Beta feature on the English Wikipedia. To enable this feature, click the highlighter icon ( ) in your editing toolbar (or under the hamburger menu in the 2017 wikitext editor). This feature can help prevent you from making mistakes when editing complex templates.
  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in July (previously scheduled for June).

  Miscellaneous

  • Currently around 20% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 17% a year ago. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless if you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

Vandalism... for no real reason other than to act childish edit

I believe this is the same person who is undoing edits for no reason other than to get back at someone. Something needs to be done (if anything can be done) about this person since it's pretty clear that there not going to stop at all.

  • 107.77.229.4[12] (blocked but that's not really doing anything by the looks of it)

I don't mean to get off topic here, but I want to be honest, so please believe me when I say that I'm not here to cause any trouble or get into an edit war with anyone. I came here to someone like you to let you know about this, I have no control over what IP address I get, I'm at the mercy of AT&T's DSL connection and anybody who owns this thing knows that it sucks.[20] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.208.137.111 (talk) 22:38, 10 July 2018 (UTC)Reply

I don't really see vandalism; you'll have to pardon my ignorance but what I'm seeing is a content dispute. Tbe other editor's changes may be disruptive and/or incorrect but due to my lack of knowledge I can't call tbe changes vandalism. My advice would be to contact other editors on whatever Wiki project talk page that applies and make your case tbere. What you've described is complicated and best addressed by tbose familiar with tbe subject. As for the issue of dynamic IP addresses; register an account. Thanks for taking the time to post here.   Guideline and policy news

  • After a discussion at Meta, a new user group called "interface administrators" (formerly "technical administrator") has been created. Come the end of August, interface admins will be the only users able to edit site-wide JavaScript and CSS pages like MediaWiki:Common.js and MediaWiki:Common.css, or edit other user's personal JavaScript and CSS. The intention is to improve security and privacy by reducing the number of accounts which could be used to compromise the site or another user's account through malicious code. The new user group can be assigned and revoked by bureaucrats. Discussion is ongoing to establish details for implementing the group on the English Wikipedia.
  • Following a request for comment, the WP:SISTER style guideline now states that in the mainspace, interwiki links to Wikinews should only be made as per the external links guideline. This generally means that within the body of an article, you should not link to Wikinews about a particular event that is only a part of the larger topic. Wikinews links in "external links" sections can be used where helpful, but not automatically if an equivalent article from a reliable news outlet could be linked in the same manner.

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following a "stop-gap" discussion, six users have temporarily been made interface administrators while discussion is ongoing for a more permanent process for assigning the permission. Interface administrators are now the only editors allowed to edit sitewide CSS and JavaScript pages, as well as CSS/JS pages in another user's userspace. Previously, all administrators had this ability. The right can be granted and revoked by bureaucrats.

  Technical news

  • Because of a data centre test you will be able to read but not edit the wikis for up to an hour on 12 September and 10 October. This will start at 14:00 (UTC). You might lose edits if you try to save during this time. The time when you can't edit might be shorter than an hour.
  • Some abuse filter variables have changed. They are now easier to understand for non-experts. The old variables will still work but filter editors are encouraged to replace them with the new ones. You can find the list of changed variables on mediawiki.org. They have a note which says Deprecated. Use ... instead. An example is article_text which is now page_title.
  • Abuse filters can now use how old a page is. The variable is page_age.

  Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee has resolved to perform a round of Checkuser and Oversight appointments. The usernames of all applicants will be shared with the Functionaries team, and they will be requested to assist in the vetting process. The deadline to submit an application is 23:59 UTC, 12 September, and the candidates that move forward will be published on-wiki for community comments on 18 September.

What is wrong with you? edit

I posted a discography that I copied in its entirety from the Italian wiki page...which I carefully cleaned up and translated into English. So, congrats on improving this pathetic page for Rise Stevens? No, of course not. Instead some fool editor shows up and decides to randomly delete parts of it, no explanation given other than "unsourced" (as if I have to prove to his perfect satisfaction - it's always a he - that every one of these widely known recordings actually exist). No discussion, certainly no investigation of the actual facts on his part, just vandalism to prove he has the power to delete whatever the heck he wants.

And you show up once I restore it and declare, absent any evidence, that I am a sockpuppet - rather than the obvious fucking explanation that my ISP assigns new IPs every time I log on.

Is there an ounce of sense in any of you puffed up Wikipedia editors? Any sense at all in there? Yikes, every time I deal with one of you types I decide I must be the fool for thinking that any of you can actually be reasoned with.

I realize I'm being trolled but on the off chance you really do give a damn, go to the article talk page and attempt to discover what the consensus for your changes may be. Tiderolls 19:32, 13 September 2018 (UTC)Reply

There has been no discussion, neither initiated by you nor by the fool who deleted my posting, nor by an earlier fool who waded in a week or two ago (using a bot) and deleted my additions arbitrarily. It's just one self-important editor after another deleting stuff which is either borrowed in its fucking entirety from another language version of wikipedia, or basic consensus among people who know anything about the opera singer.

And wtf constitutes "trolling", apart from the fact that I have rightly criticized your arrogant assertion of power? Do trolls improve wikipedia pages by adding needed fucking content? Jesus H. Christ you people are pathetic.

      • I come back here to report, Tide rolls, that I just blocked this same person and his entire range; they've been fucking around since 6 May 2016, and I saw that they left a comment on your talk page. Who would think that I would have responded at that time--and that my good friend Shock Brigade Harvester Boris dropped by? • I have to admit, Professor, when I saw "What is wrong with you?" in your edit summary I was somewhat concerned. Thinking I may have clicked a wrong button somewhere and RevDel'd 40 or 50 FAs or blocked Jimbo, I was relieved to find it referenced an old section header. Things here are much the same as everywhere; folks are grumpy for dozens of different reasons that none of us can control. • Following a request for comment, the size of the Arbitration Committee will be decreased to 13 arbitrators, starting in 2019. Additionally, the minimum support percentage required to be appointed to a two-year term on ArbCom has been increased to 60%. ArbCom candidates who receive between 50% and 60% support will be appointed to one-year terms instead.

@Ggrbsn: Hi, George. I addressed this issue on your user talk page (found here) with this edit. Basically, you are advised not to edit the article directly. If you have content to add or believe content needs to be removed, leave a message on the article's talk page (found here). Let editors that do not have a close relationship with the article's subject make the changes. Regards Tiderolls 14:14, 29 October 2018 (UTC)Reply

ArbCom 2018 election voter message edit

Hello, Tide rolls. Voting in the 2018 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 3 December. All users who registered an account before Sunday, 28 October 2018, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Thursday, 1 November 2018 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote.

If you wish to participate in the 2018 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:42, 19 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

  • In late November, an attacker compromised multiple accounts, including at least four administrator accounts, and used them to vandalize Wikipedia. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. Sharing the same password across multiple websites makes your account vulnerable, especially if your password was used on a website that suffered a data breach. As these incidents have shown, these concerns are not pure fantasies.
  • Wikipedia policy requires administrators to have strong passwords. To further reinforce security, administrators should also consider enabling two-factor authentication. A committed identity can be used to verify that you are the true account owner in the event that your account is compromised and/or you are unable to log in.

Clarity edit

Hello, Tiderolls! I would like to apologize to you and the wikipedia community in advance for not providing you with an explanation as to why I removed the text that you had highlighted. The reason being is that the underline portion that was deleted did not sufficiently match the definition of a nuclear family, which is definitively considered to be a two parent household, composed of a man and a woman, with children. What was previously there was a misconstrued, minsinterpreted version of the term that doesn't match with the definition that I provided above and is considered to be the correct definition. I apologize for the inconvenience that this brought upon you, and I hope that this had given you clarity to the subject matter. Along with this, I'd like to thank you for keeping me on track because I acknowledge that not providing a reason for editing was very negligent of me. I will take your advice for the future when I edit (add or remove) content from the website.

Merry Merry edit

  Happy Christmas!
Hello Tide rolls,
Early in A Child's Christmas in Wales the young Dylan and his friend Jim Prothero witness smoke pouring from Jim's home. After the conflagration has been extinguished Dylan writes that

Nobody could have had a noisier Christmas Eve. And when the firemen turned off the hose and were standing in the wet, smoky room, Jim's Aunt, Miss. Prothero, came downstairs and peered in at them. Jim and I waited, very quietly, to hear what she would say to them. She said the right thing, always. She looked at the three tall firemen in their shining helmets, standing among the smoke and cinders and dissolving snowballs, and she said, "Would you like anything to read?"

My thanks to you for your efforts to keep the 'pedia readable in case the firemen chose one of our articles :-) Best wishes to you and yours and happy editing in 2019. MarnetteD|Talk 22:46, 19 December 2018 (UTC)Reply

Administrators' newsletter – January 2019 edit

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2018).

  Guideline and policy news

  1. G14 (new): Disambiguation pages that disambiguate only zero or one existing pages are now covered under the new G14 criterion (discussion). This is db-disambig; the text is unchanged and candidates may be found in Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as unnecessary disambiguation pages.
  2. R4 (new): Redirects in the file namespace (and no file links) that have the same name as a file or redirect at Commons are now covered under the new R4 criterion (discussion). This is db-redircom; the text is unchanged.
  3. G13 (expanded): Userspace drafts containing only the default Article Wizard text are now covered under G13 along with other drafts (discussion). Such blank drafts are now eligible after six months rather than one year, and taggers continue to use db-blankdraft.

  Technical news

  • Starting on December 13, the Wikimedia Foundation security team implemented new password policy and requirements. Privileged accounts (administrators, bureaucrats, checkusers, oversighters, interface administrators, bots, edit filter managers/helpers, template editors, et al.) must have a password at least 10 characters in length. All accounts must have a password:
  1. At least 8 characters in length
  2. Not in the 100,000 most popular passwords (defined by the Password Blacklist library)
  3. Different from their username
User accounts not meeting these requirements will be prompted to update their password accordingly. More information is available on MediaWiki.org.
  • Blocked administrators may now block the administrator that blocked them. This was done to mitigate the possibility that a compromised administrator account would block all other active administrators, complementing the removal of the ability to unblock oneself outside of self-imposed blocks. A request for comment is currently in progress to determine whether the blocking policy should be updated regarding this change.
  • Copyvio-revdel now has a link to open the history with the RevDel checkboxes already filled in.

  Arbitration

  Miscellaneous

  • Accounts continue to be compromised on a regular basis. Evidence shows this is entirely due to the accounts having the same password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately.
  • Around 22% of admins have enabled two-factor authentication, up from 20% in June 2018. If you haven't already enabled it, please consider doing so. Regardless of whether you use 2FA, please practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.

  Guideline and policy news

  • A request for comment is currently open to reevaluate the activity requirements for administrators.
  • Administrators who are blocked have the technical ability to block the administrator who blocked their own account. A recent request for comment has amended the blocking policy to clarify that this ability should only be used in exceptional circumstances, such as account compromises, where there is a clear and immediate need.
  • A request for comment closed with a consensus in favor of deprecating The Sun as a permissible reference, and creating an edit filter to warn users who attempt to cite it.

  Technical news

  • A discussion regarding an overhaul of the format and appearance of Wikipedia:Requests for page protection is in progress (permalink). The proposed changes will make it easier to create requests for those who are not using Twinkle. The workflow for administrators at this venue will largely be unchanged. Additionally, there are plans to archive requests similar to how it is done at WP:PERM, where historical records are kept so that prior requests can more easily be searched for.

  Miscellaneous

  • Voting in the 2019 Steward elections will begin on 08 February 2019, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 28 February 2019, 13:59 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
  • A new IRC bot is available that allows you to subscribe to notifications when specific filters are tripped. This requires that your IRC handle be identified.

Thought four tildes were enough to locate an editor. Should I use http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Quaerens-veritatem ? Perhaps (talk) would be better. Any suggestions welcome Tide.

"Exercise restraint" edit

I appreciate your efforts at achieving excellence at Wikipedia, but your admonishment to me that I should "exercise restraint" in my summaries is off base and unnecessary.

In summarizing my edits, I would rather err on the side of diligence than negligence as instructed by Wikipedia. I don't assume people have prior knowledge in understanding my edits so I make an effort to be clear, also as instructed by Wikipedia. In writing edit summaries, I am aware that some of the people who might read my summaries are either quite tied to the subject and sensitive to edits or beginners who are learning how and why edits are made.

Wikipedia encourages editors to be thorough in their summaries, recommending restraint only as it pertains to not "...writing essays about 'the truth' or longwinding arguments with fellow editors."

Finally, in the scheme of things, how do my thorough summaries possibly impact you or other Wikipedia editors? Surely, there are far more important ways to spend your time, energy and skill to improve Wikipedia.

Best wishes in your continued contributions to Wikipedia.MarydaleEd (talk) 00:02, 21 February 2019 (UTC)Reply

Administrators' newsletter – March 2019 edit

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2019).

  Guideline and policy news

  Technical news

  • A new tool is available to help determine if a given IP is an open proxy/VPN/webhost/compromised host.

  Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee announced two new OTRS queues. Both are meant solely for cases involving private information; other cases will continue to be handled at the appropriate venues (e.g., WP:COIN or WP:SPI).
    • paid-en-wp wikipedia.org has been set up to receive private evidence related to abusive paid editing.
    • checkuser-en-wp wikipedia.org has been set up to receive private requests for CheckUser. For instance, requests for IP block exemption for anonymous proxy editing should now be sent to this address instead of the functionaries-en list.

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2019).

  Arbitration

  Miscellaneous

  • Two more administrator accounts were compromised. Evidence has shown that these attacks, like previous incidents, were due to reusing a password that was used on another website that suffered a data breach. If you have ever used your current password on any other website, you should change it immediately. All admins are strongly encouraged to enable two-factor authentication, please consider doing so. Please always practice appropriate account security by ensuring your password is secure and unique to Wikimedia.
  • As a reminder, according to WP:NOQUORUM, administrators looking to close or relist an AfD should evaluate a nomination that has received few or no comments as if it were a proposed deletion (PROD) prior to determining whether it should be relisted.

Joaquín Balaguer edit

My comments are correct and it is counterproductive to revert the talk page to the previous revision. When incorrect material is the subject of lengthy discussion that is five years old, it is an impediment to readers. No one will bother to sort through all the text that I deleted, nor should they have to. I see from the talk page guidelines that there is an acceptable way to clean up pages so I will look into that. THX.

specify the reasons for restoring edit

hello, could you please specifically tell which part of my edit is out of MoS and out of guideline version? I was very careful to make wholesale reversions. It took me sometime to get that info with authentic sources and insert it in Elections in India. My objective was to make that page one place for all Lok sabha and Vidhan sabha elections more interactive (the insertion of maps & tables) and easy to consume for readers. Please help me in finding out what exactly is wrong as all my edits are factually correct. So please quote the specific guidelines which i violated. thanks--Shoonyea (talk) 21:39, 2 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular) edit

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Administrators' newsletter – May 2019 edit

News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2019).

  Guideline and policy news

  Technical news

  • XTools Admin Stats, a tool to list admins by administrative actions, has been revamped to support more types of log entries such as AbuseFilter changes. Two additional tools have been integrated into it as well: Steward Stats and Patroller Stats.

  Arbitration

  • In response to the continuing compromise of administrator accounts, the Arbitration Committee passed a motion amending the procedures for return of permissions (diff). In such cases, the committee will review all available information to determine whether the administrator followed "appropriate personal security practices" before restoring permissions; administrators found failing to have adequately done so will not be resysopped automatically. All current administrators have been notified of this change.
  • Following a formal ratification process, the arbitration policy has been amended (diff). Specifically, the two-thirds majority required to remove or suspend an arbitrator now excludes (1) the arbitrator facing suspension or removal, and (2) any inactive arbitrator who does not respond within 30 days to attempts to solicit their feedback on the resolution through all known methods of communication.

  • The CSD feature of Twinkle now allows admins to notify page creators of deletion if the page had not been tagged. The default behavior matches that of tagging notifications, and replaces the ability to open the user talk page upon deletion. You can customize which criteria receive notifications in your Twinkle preferences: look for Notify page creator when deleting under these criteria.

  • Following a research project on masking IP addresses, the Foundation is starting a new project to improve the privacy of IP editors. The result of this project may significantly change administrative and counter-vandalism workflows. The project is in the very early stages of discussions and there is no concrete plan yet. Admins and the broader community are encouraged to leave feedback on the talk page.
  • The new page reviewer right is bundled with the admin tool set. Many admins regularly help out at Special:NewPagesFeed, but they may not be aware of improvements, changes, and new tools for the Curation system. Stay up to date by subscribing here to the NPP newsletter that appears every two months, and/or putting the reviewers' talk page on your watchlist.

Since the introduction of temporary user rights, it is becoming more usual to accord the New Page Reviewer right on a probationary period of 3 to 6 months in the first instance. This avoids rights removal for inactivity at a later stage and enables a review of their work before according the right on a permanent basis.

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add NoACEMM to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:11, 19 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Cheers edit

Damon Runyon's short story "Dancing Dan's Christmas" is a fun read if you have the time. Right from the start it extols the virtues of the hot Tom and Jerry

This hot Tom and Jerry is an old-time drink that is once used by one and all in this country to celebrate Christmas with, and in fact it is once so popular that many people think Christmas is invented only to furnish an excuse for hot Tom and Jerry, although of course this is by no means true.

No matter what concoction is your favorite to imbibe during this festive season I would like to toast you with it and to thank you for all your work here at the 'pedia this past year. Best wishes for your 2020 as well Tr. MarnetteD|Talk 21:38, 16 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Administrators' newsletter – February 2020 edit

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
  • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

  Technical news

  • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: uw-pblock.
  • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [22]

  Arbitration

  • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

  • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
  • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

  Technical news

  • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

WP:NOTDIR and WP:NOTPROMO rollback on StarHub TV wiki page. edit

Hi Tide, from my understanding, you have rollback my edit along with others in The StarHub TV page. May I know the exact reason why? I get that the removal of the channels from that page would easily fall under the WP:NOTDIR, but I don’t entirely get the reasoning behind the removal of the entire set top boxes models section and the smart card part. I understand that for the set top box model, the pricing part could be considerable as WP:NOTPROMO, but I feel that the other parts of the set top box section and the smart card part would bring encyclopedic info directly related to how StarHub TV works, similar to, but not exactly, like, for example, Mac Mini page, where information about the tech specs of each model is listed clearly. I would like to hear your opinions, as, me as relatively newly active member could be wrong in my version of understanding how wikipedia pages should contain info. --Vincentneo (talk) 17:12, 22 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Bidhan Singh socks edit

Hi Tide Rolls - I see you have recently been following some of the Bidhan Singh socks, and you semi-protected Indian order of precedence earlier today.
As can be seen at User:Arjayay/B S, the sock only very rarely uses the same IP for more than 24 hours, and has never gone back to an earlier IP, making blocking the IPs pointless, whilst their ranges seem too large for range-blocks?
I have previously asked for several pages to be protected: the first four were protected, for a month, but I requested protection of their replacement pages too soon, and was told there had not been enough disruption.
I wonder if you are willing to semi all the recent targets that are not currently protected? These are:-

Of course, the problem with protecting the articles is that he will just choose new targets, making it more difficult to clean up after him - any thoughts? - Arjayay (talk) 16:50, 28 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Arjayay:, of course I will take a look at these. At the very least I will add them to my watch list. If the individual chooses to move to other articles someone will notice and we'll pick up the pieces then. Thanks for bringing this to my attention. Tiderolls 17:34, 28 May 2020 (UTC)Reply

Bidhan Singh edit

Hi Tide rolls
Thanks for blocking todays Bidhan Singh IP at List of state leaders in 2017. As you may know, I try to log all the IPs used at User:Arjayay/B S
The range of IPs being used has recently reduced possibly as a result of Covid 19. I put the latest set of 106.207.**.*** IPs (listed on the edit page in hidden text) into a range-calc tool and it returned

IPv4 Range: 106.207.0.0/17
Size: 32768
IPv4 Subranges: 106.207.0.0/17

I don't understand range-blocks - Is this too many to cover? - I'm sure it won't stop him, but should cause inconvenience - Best wishes - Arjayay (talk) 16:57, 3 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Custom signature fix needed edit

Hi there! You have a custom signature set in your account preferences. A change to Wikipedia's software has made your current custom signature incompatible with the software.

The problem: Your signature contains a syntax error, specifically formatting tags that are in the wrong order.

The solutions: You can reset your signature to the default, or you can fix your signature.

Solution 1: Reset your signature to the default:
  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Uncheck the box (☑︎→☐) that says "Treat the above as wiki markup."
  3. Remove anything in the Signature: text box.
  4. Click the blue "Save" button at the bottom of the page. (The red "Restore all default settings" button will reset all of your preference settings, not just the signature.)
Solution 2: Fix your custom signature:
  1. Find the signature section in the first tab of Special:Preferences.
  2. Change the signature as shown below, or make other edits to make the signature appear how you want it to appear.
  3. Click Save to update to your newly fixed signature.

Current signature:
<span style="color:White;background:darkRed">Tide</span>'<span style="color:darkRed">rolls</span>

Fixed signature:
<span style="color:White;background:darkRed">Tide</span>'<span style="color:darkRed">rolls</span>

More information is available at Wikipedia:Signatures#Customizing how everyone sees your signature. If you have followed these instructions and still want help, please leave a message at Wikipedia talk:Signatures. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:01, 14 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks edit

Dear,

I read your message. Thank you very much. I am really frustrated with decision of Admins that judged me unfairly. I really want appreciate your good will to help me, but I know that nothing is going revert my ban decision. I am very emotional person and you can't believe that decision here affected me in real life. Last two days I am aggressive because injustice I faced, specially non of admins even didn't read my defence and comment on it. Hence, I decided to continue do things that don't not frustrates me, the start is just to vanish my account from wikipedia in order never come back.Mirhasanov (talk) 18:27, 17 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

@Mirhasanov: But you are not being judged, your actions are being judged. Plainly, we do not know you. All we have to go on is your actions here. When one violates a topic ban there are a few different possibilities. The easiest to overcome is misunderstanding the terms. If the problem is misunderstanding the cure is to listen to those who know. If one persists in forging ahead in the face of advice that will surely help, then how are we to assist? The decision to stay or go is entirely yours but I submit that your leaving actually helps nothing. Taking the advice of editors that have experience, learning to operate within Wikipedia's policies and guidelines is the way forward. Good luck in whatever choice you make. Tiderolls 18:37, 17 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
  • You are really emotionally intelligent person. I am very glad to see admin like you who tries to understand other side. I tried to defence my actions in ANI and AN. I spend my 1 day to proof Admins that I am not interested to disturb the topic. I even explained them that I don't have capability to issue a good article, all I can do is fact checking and making sure that references are proper, which I tried to do. However, in the end I was reported by people who I challenge and eventually got blocked. Admins even didn't explained me which rule I did break. The admin who blocked me first time stated that I don't cross any redline but, somehow again the decision is to block me. I could at least have warning by admin about my action, which would motivate me going back to him and asking his help to make sure I don't act aggressive, destructive or partisan. However, none of this happened even during independent review of my case. I felt no one cares what I write to defend myself. Instead I received below provocative comment that really hurted my believe to admin board.

No. My question was clear and concise, and your obfuscatory answer I take as being, essentially, a "No". Therefore, I stand by my endorsement of an AA2 topic ban, and the block that has been imposed on you, and would also support an indef block or a site ban. I don't think we need or want you here, you should be posting to some ultra-partisan anti-Armenian blog. Beyond My Ken (talk)

In conclusion I again asked them to explain which Wikipedia rule I went again to receive block. I asked them to show evidences like I did to defend myself but, I received only silence. However, when I raised case against user who really violates wikipedia rules, I started get bombarded by admins, which before preferred not to answer me.

I hope I was able to explain my frustration. Thank you really very much for listening me. Now I feel better. Mirhasanov (talk) 18:56, 17 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

You may as well discontinue your campaign. Alternately, you could seek unblock from your original account. Tiderolls 11:55, 21 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Administrators' newsletter – July 2021 edit

News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).

  Guideline and policy news

  • Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
  • An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.

  Technical news

  • IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.

How we will see unregistered users edit

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

LittleBe edit

Hello Tide rolls, I hope you are well. I saw your edit on LittleBe the other day, and thanked you after you explained about programme listings being contrary to the manual of style back in December. However, it got me thinking. I noticed that other articles about tv channels such as ITV2 all have programme listings. I was wondering why we cannot have one for littleBe or if it’s a case of all the others should not be having one either. I read about Wikipedia not being a place for tv guides, although when other articles have notable programming etc, it may be in the interest of our readers to have notable programming. What are your thoughts on this?   Blanchey (talk) 11:26, 20 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • Hi, @Blanchey: I think the reason some articles have lists and some don't depends on who's watching them. I encourage editors to follow the guidelines for the articles I watch, but it's not a crusade for me. For some of these articles there has been an individual, or individuals, that insist on disrupting the articles. One of the ways they accomplish this is by introducing bloated programming lists and adding/subtracting entries ad nauseum. At this point the action becomes one of willful disruption rather than a good faith misinterpretation of the project's guidelines. Another aspect for consideration can be found at WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS. Thanks for coming here to discuss the subject. Please let me know if you have more concerns. Tiderolls 12:37, 20 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for your response. Following your response, I have also considered whether kids programmes are really notable enough to be featured in a Wikipedia article. Also, someone seems to keep re adding it, possibly an ip user and they are adding erroneous links and not citing sources. I think that the page may need to be protected from anonymous users temporarily. Blanchey (talk) 13:10, 20 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Or maybe a note should be added to the source explaining why we don’t add an entire list of programmes. Blanchey (talk) 13:16, 20 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
  • Exactly, notability is the crux of the matter. Leaving an edit notice is a good idea, although I don't think it will dissuade folks with disruption as a goal. As for protection, it's my preference to wait a bit before pulling the trigger. Keep in mind that you can always visit Wikipedia:Requests for page protection if I'm not around or you feel the protection is essential. Tiderolls 13:18, 20 May 2022 (UTC)Reply
Hello again, hope you are well. Just a follow up from yesterday, I’ve now had to request the page protected because I tried to assume good faith by adding a note, however, Ip users continued to edit and even removed the template which just shows that they know exactly what they’re doing at that it’s vandalism. I also wanted to point out, and you are probably already aware of this, but if not, there seems to be a big issue with your talk page. When I am using mobile browser and click on ‘talk’, for some reason, it directs me to this discussion from 2018. I don’t know why it does this, maybe there’s some sort of redirect somewhere on this page or maybe a technical fault. I still thought I’d let you know. Have a good evening   Blanchey (talk) 18:05, 21 May 2022 (UTC)Reply

Whipping Post edit

Teaching my son (he's 10 today) about blues and rock and roll, and of course it has to end up with the Allman Brothers. He's off to bed but I'm still here listening to the Fillmore album. You'll be pleased to know that it was both our birthdays today, and that I got a Brand New Alabama t-shirt, so I'm ready. You doing OK? Drmies (talk) 02:19, 18 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

  • Yes, sir, I'm doing better than I deserve. Thanks for asking. Happy birthday to you and your son. Even though it's been a while, I remember 10. It was effing great! No bills...didn't have to worry about my next meal...my Mom was a great cook. School was a breeze because they didn't really expect much from us..lol. Now to serious business; of course I'm impatient for the start of the season. Since Bama has abandoned the "bring the pain for 60 minutes" game strategy, I've been a bit lost as to how things shake out. I don't really dislike the more nuanced game that's being played; I just miss the comfort of the old "tried and true". Hell, yes, I'd applaud bringing the wishbone back! LOL. Roll Tide, Professor. Tiderolls 12:52, 18 August 2022 (UTC)Reply
    • Whoa, we are not bringing pain anymore? My friend, an OSU grad (one of these THE OSU people) just moved to Birmingham, from North Carolina, and I need him to suffer. Did you see this? (Hope the link works--you can find it here as well.) Very impressive. Yeah, 10 was better than...well I won't say. Take care of yourself. One of these days we'll meet up. If in Montgomery, bring me some oysters. If at your place, I'll bring some Conecuh. Drmies (talk) 14:22, 18 August 2022 (UTC)Reply

Rolling and tumbling edit

That was close. It was my fault: I forgot to wear the proper shirt this morning. I actually drove back home from Tuscaloosa this morning, and got home just in time: didn't know we had such an early game. I was there for a symposium, hadn't been there in over a decade. If you know the campus, you can imagine how overwhelming it was, that enormous growth in a decade and a half. I saw some old friends, and talked to some students--whose college debts ranged from 80k to 200k. Well, I'm glad I went, and I'm glad I left. Hope you enjoyed the game!
