Malayalam naming conventions

Hello Deepujoseph, I'm from the German Wikipedia and only occassionally active on the English site but I remember you were the one who welcomed me when I registered here - so thanks for that :-) In the German Wikipedia, we're lacking a native speaker of Malayalam who could help us creating naming conventions for this language. So far we have conventions for Devanagari, Bengali and Tamil (see here) only. Are there any naming conventions for Malayalam in the English Wikipedia? Maybe you can help us - just answer here or on my talk page. Thanks & regards--Young Pioneer 12:58, 3 August 2006 (UTC)

automatic sitenotice offset

Re your question on VP/T: On another site I recently worked out a way to over-write the title, that automatically offsets itself for the sitenotice:

<div id="titlehack" style="padding-top:0; padding-bottom:0; text-align:{{#switch:{{{align}}}|right=right|middle|center=center|left|#default=left}}; position:absolute; left:0.95em; top:0%; width:98%; background-color:transparent"> {{#switch:{{MediaWiki:Sitenotice}}|-|=|#default=<div id="siteNotice" style="visibility:hidden"><p>{{MediaWiki:Sitenotice}}</p></div>}} <div style="margin-bottom: 0; color: black; background-color: #FFFFFF; font-weight: normal; padding-top: .5em; padding-bottom: .17em; font-size: 188%;border-bottom: 1px solid #aaaaaa;">{{{1|{{PAGENAME}}}}}</div> </div>

It overlays the sitenotice itself, but invisibly. And since it is in the offset div with the header, it offsets the header almost precisely. So to adapt it to your needs, this should work:

<div id="titlehack" style="padding-top:0; padding-bottom:0; text-align:right; position:absolute; left:0.95em; top:0%; width:98%; background-color:transparent"> {{#switch:{{MediaWiki:Sitenotice}}|-|=|#default=<div id="siteNotice" style="visibility:hidden"><p>{{MediaWiki:Sitenotice}}</p></div>}} <div style="margin-bottom: 0; color: black; background-color: transparent; font-weight: normal; padding-top: .5em; padding-bottom: .17em; font-size: 188%">'''a.k.a thunderboltz'''</div> </div>

From GlueWhale

Hi Deepu. I am working at MEC Edappally. Where do you work? Where is the cochin page? Think you put the link wrongly. It's not working. I plan to put more articles on our playback singers. They are all poorly represented here.Only K.J.Y , P.jayachandran, and now P.Somasundaran have a decent writeup. Just finished a stub on Gayatri. Hope to get more details from her and finish it soon. Also want to do articles on all old singers who did not get their due. I think wiki is still biased against people from kerala. See the amount of sock and false propaganda done even by our so called malayalee wikians! Why do we always fight against each other? Anyway I will definitely be troubling you again for help since I am a toddler here! Hope you will oblige. --Gluewhale 15:37, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

From Vijay (User "Kuaichik"): Thirteen languages

I think I will list the thirteen languages using WP:BABEL. For now, I will list them in plain text on my user page. And no, you're not overwhelming me. The links you sent me seem to be very useful, and I will make sure to look at all of them.--Kuaichik 19:45, 6 August 2006 (UTC)

Thank you so much for all the links! I just finished reading them all. I'm quite sure they will be useful.--Kuaichik 22:53, 6 August 2006 (UTC)
By the way, could I help you with your French page? Please?--Kuaichik 04:38, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Why did I learn all those languages? I don't really know; I was interested in languages ever since I was four years old. It could have been for a variety of reasons.

I learned all of them at home, by myself. Sometimes I used books, sometimes I used online materials (whenever there were any).

By the way, it's actually "absolument" not "absoluTEment." The word "absolutely" is an exception to the French rule of making the adjective feminine before adding the "-ment." Thank you so much for letting me edit!! --Kuaichik 21:48, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

OK, I've edited the French page a little. I'll have to look around the French Wikipedia a little more to see whether certain features (e.g. Babel) are available. Geez, I really have to do some serious editing of all these foreign language pages...I'm working on better machine translators (sometimes); those should help when they're done! --Kuaichik 22:38, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

This is the "literal" translation of your French user page:

Thanks Deepu for the message. I've been a reader of Wikipedia for so long but has started writing only last week. I started off with an entry on Maharajas College and is now working on an entry called Ambalamedu. Personally, Im a bad designer of webpages and I'm only beginning to learn Wikipedia syntax.

I would be greatly thankful if you would like to make changes to my pages. I had mailed a few of my friends saying that the page I've done is horrible and asked for help. Without a help, I dont think I can do anything presantable.

If you can share me any of your messenger contacts, that would be more helpful if I need to ask you doubts.

Unspecified source for Image:Ayurveda oil.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:Ayurveda oil.jpg. I notice the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this file yourself, then there needs to be a justification explaining why we have the right to use it on Wikipedia (see copyright tagging below). If you did not create the file yourself, then you need to specify where it was found, i.e., in most cases link to the website where it was taken from, and the terms of use for content from that page.

If the file also doesn't have a copyright tag, then one should be added. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Fair use, use a tag such as {{Non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair_use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Abu Badali 11:36, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Thank you for the notice. However, I'm not sure about the picture any longer. The website We Make Money Not Art, had a Creative commons license on it (on the main page) when I uploaded the image from this page. But I cant find it any longer. Anyhow, here's proof that I'm not lying. The page still is listed in google under websites that are "free to use or share, even commercially". I've provided the source of the image and its creator. However, I've left the no-source template intact. Looking forward to your insight in the matter. Thank you.-- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK12:02, 7 August 2006 (UTC)
Hello again! I'd greatly appreciate your thoughts on this at my talk page. TIA. -- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK11:50, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Sorry for the delay. The way it is now, the source seems ok but not the licensing. But, although the image is there, I can't find any info about that image on the site and I don't belive we have enough evidence that the image is really free. I do not doubt your good intentions, though. I'm updating the tag. --Abu Badali 01:09, 11 August 2006 (UTC)
(Why didn't I think of this before) Sorry for bothering you again, but could you please see this and this — archives showing how the site looked before. If you scroll down to the bottom, you can see the creative commons license. Now, if I am correct, once a particular document is released under a free license, then the author does not have the power to revoke it, right? If that is the case, then shouldn't the license still hold? I'm particularly keen on this one because there are no other free images available to represent Ayurveda. Thanks for the reply. -- thunderboltza.k.a.Deepu Joseph |TALK17:58, 11 August 2006 (UTC)

From Gluewhale

There was an NPOV and cleanup notice put on pradip somasundaran which I have set right by pruning the article and also removing the POV's. I also shortened the list of songs to highlight only the important ones and removed the terms famous, prominent etc. All this was done as per tips provided by Bluevalour. Now can I remove the NPOV banner? Or is it to be removed only by Bluevalour who kept it there? Just a (wiki rules) doubt. Please help... --Gluewhale 14:01, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

Gluewhale, if you are in touch with him, can you please check whether it is Pradeep or Pradip, and Somasundaran or Somasundaram ? Tintin (talk) 14:06, 7 August 2006 (UTC)

New Article on Ankur

Priyappetta Deepu,

I have created my first article, Ankur (film). It currently includes an introduction and eight paragraphs explaining the plot (it is a very complex film, and I believe eight paragraphs are necessary just to begin covering the intricate storyline involved).

I have two questions concerning the article:

1. Should I now remove the "stub" notice (which I myself included :))?

2. I have not cited sources just yet (I was thinking of adding more information first). Should I include it on one of the "Did You Know?" pages anyway? If so, which one? (The main page or the Indian Portal page?)

Snehamulla, Vijayan. --Kuaichik 03:36, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Ayyo! Valiya upakaaramaayi!! Thank you SOOO much for responding to my last comment! I wonder how on Earth you manage to respond to so many comments...!

I've removed the stub notice. Here it's almost midnight, so I'll add the film information and source material tomorrow. Then I'll submit it to Template talk:Did you know.

I've studied French for about six years, so I know it pretty well. Also, I'm not worried about losing the ability to speak it (and write it), because I'm going to UT right after my birthday, and there are tons of people there who speak French. But I do make errors every now and then (a very clear example of this can be found on the French page for the Domesday Book, which I edited only to have tons of grammatical errors corrected!). :)

By the way, I happened to notice that you're about my age (less than a year younger than me). How interesting! --Kuaichik 05:07, 9 August 2006 (UTC)

Endammo! Citing sources for the first time can be so time-consuming! And what's even worse is that I don't think it's cited in the usual way just yet. You can see the Ankur (film) page for yourself, though. --Kuaichik 18:29, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
OK, I think I'll need to have my sources cited the way they are now. At first, I tried to cite them as footnotes, which is much harder than what I ultimately decided to do. Does the Ankur (film) page look OK the way it is now? --Kuaichik 23:00, 9 August 2006 (UTC)
Actually, it was almost frustrating! I was trying to make the most of it, sort of like Karuthamma in Chemmeen when she is with Palani and away from her true lover. But again, thank you so much! Other people besides me have finally started editing the article (though not much in content), and now I'll be able to reference the article without going crazy! I should be able to get a picture of Lakshmi opening the gate for Surya (I have a DVD version of Ankur right next to me). --Kuaichik 11:52, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

I have finally put a fact on Template talk:Did you know (you should be able to find it at the top of the "August 8" subsection of the Suggestions section). --Kuaichik 12:13, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Is it better now? The problem was that the reference I originally used as the second reference was the movie cover rather than any specific webpage...:-P But now I've moved that reference so that I could (at least try to!) correctly cite the IMDb page. --Kuaichik 12:39, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Phew! Enikku samaadhaanam aayi! (Aren't bilingual messages fun? Or are they annoying? :-D). Now I can make new sections in that article. (Now if only I could download the Indic fonts...!). --Kuaichik 12:47, 10 August 2006 (UTC)
Sariyaa. Few of my fellow Indian Americans are nearly as interested in Indian culture as I am. I have always been fascinated with India (even after visiting my (valiya)ammachi about six times), that land as diverse as Europe. Also, my Amma and Appa always sing old movie songs (sometimes with very clever lyrics)...Anyway, I've added a little more to the Ankur article. --Kuaichik 13:31, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Thanks for congradulating me! :) There's still a ton to say about that film, though (under each section that I've created)...and I keep forgetting to check whether the fact is on the Indian portal yet. --Kuaichik 00:38, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

Is it permissible to take images from Wikipedia pages in one language and put them on pages in another language? For instance, suppose I wanted to create a French translation of the Kumaran Asan page. Could I take the pictures you used in the English version and put them into the French translation? Atho? :) --Kuaichik 18:49, 15 August 2006 (UTC)
Ugh...chhii! I'm bad with images...actually I haven't put up a French Kumaran Asan article yet (I was working on the French version of the Anthony Bourdain article...how ironic that no one had previously created an article on him in French, though his parents are French!). Looks like the copyright issue with the English article's picture is even more complicated...! Oh, well...let somebody else put up an image if they want...--Kuaichik 13:00, 16 August 2006 (UTC)

Help

Since you were the admin that first welcomed me to wiki, I would appreciate it if you helped a fellow Desi brother out. User:BhaiSaab has been harrassing me on Wikipedia. User talk:Blnguyen is mediating the debate but BhaiSaab has gone around Bl to get me blocked twice for no reason. The last attempt [2] shows him digging up edits taht I made long before I heard of WP:AN or WP:AGF, and some even before you welcomed me to this project. He told me to assume good faith but by spying on all my diffs, I feel that he is assuming malicious faith (or perhas being faithless). Also when I confronted the admin who "warned" me (telling him that BhaiSaab had not notified me of this attack) he became hostile [3]. BhaiSaab has stalked me on Wikipedia by "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Bakasuprman/Archive1#Note" (actually he's not doing anything BUT taking looks at them), and has lied to our mediator. I trust that you will take the correct action.Bakaman Bakatalk 01:46, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism by Alniko

Deepu,

User Alniko, is in to continues reverts on the articles related to Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, and Kerala. There are several warnings in his talk page [User_talk:Alniko]] ( I too gave him a final warning for not adhering to the neutral point of view). Moreover, he is very sarcastic to others (personal attacks).

His editions are really blind. For instance; he just copy pastes some old version of the article, thus overriding all the new changes. I am really tired with his attittude.

You can get a trait of his hatred nature by visiting these blogs of him : [4], [5], etc.

Here are a few quotes from his side : (feel the hatred)

  • "What this Isaac and fellow idiots does not know is - No Kochi, No Kerala. He can keep on panmpering

the impotent holy cow "Trivandrum" which can never milch."

  • "But fringe, being what it is, always moves based on paranoic impulses.

Such an impulsive response from this lunatic fringe is what we see in this episode of Vandalising Wikipedia. We hope Wikipedia will take note of this grossly incongruent manipulations by these guys."

  • "Unfortunately Keralites had to carry this dead holy cow (trivandrum)for long, giving it special treatment. "
  • "any development plan for Kerala will have as its inseparable part, downsizing of bureaucracy, even if it ends up in drawing curtains on "cities" like Trivandrum."

Passion towards his/her own city should not lead to hatred for the neighbour. From these remarks, it is quite obvious that he cannot adhere to a Neutral Point of View. He will be always biased and prejuidiced.

You can also find a number of instances of harsh personal remarks he made against samaleks, sathyalal, etc. It is crystal clear that User Alniko is not complying with the wiki guidelines (he cannot comply).

what is the ground for your suggestion for deletion of an article of the cartoon magazine. == chiricheppu ==is the one and only Political Cartoon Magazine in malayalam.why you are fighting against cartoons and cartoon magazines.we wikipedians are consider that you and your friends are acting as the tools of some nasty politicians who are totally against Chiricheppu .I think this magazine is working as a terminator which destroying anti-social elements in the society.Afer Asadhu and Sarasan magazines Chiricheppu is blooming laughter in the minds of malayalam readers. malicious intention to defame a magazine surely comes under the provisions of cyber crime.search for the details of judgement of keralas firstly filed cyber crime in pathanamthita district court.

August Esperanza Newsletter

Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Although having the newsletter appear on everyone's userpage is desired, this may not be ideal for everyone. If, in the future, you wish to receive a link to the newsletter, rather than the newsletter itself, you may add yourself to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Newsletter/Opt Out List.

Edit war

Hi Deepu, We have to do some thing to end the edit war. Alniko is a known hate blogger. He is just creating the mess here in Wiki. His intention is to create mess. Initially he was removing Technopark pictures, data with citations etc. Now he is trying to mess up every thing.

Report the user for a block

Deepu, I too agree to block the user Alniko(Talk). I think the debate on the largest city is well finalised after much heated discussions in the Kerala Talk page. The issue was even reported to the admins to interfere in the problem. Thus we reached in a consensus and the articles were changed accordingly.

Now, you are trying very hard to get the Kochi article to be selected as a Featured Article. If the edit wars, are continuing like this, it will be very hard to achieve. I am also making several additions and changes in the Trivandrum article to fit it in to the norms of wiki Indian Projects cities. Inorder to stablise the articles, every one has to adhere with a Neutral point of view which reflects the facts; not the hypes.

I pointed out Alniko's blogs to you for getting a feel of his bias towards Kochi. I too know that his blogs and other outside activities cannot be counted for blocking himm in wikipedia. But I just wanted you also to know his biased nature and his rude behavior.

The problem has been reported in the Administrator Notice Boards, and also to Bhadani, and Blnguyen. I request you also to report the issues to the admins, thus to end this edit war and biased inputs. Hoping for your co-operation....

Thanks in advance.

Your recent edit on the Mumbai section

Hi Deepu,

You recently made an edit on the Mumbai section, that edited out (removed) a link to our site - http://mumbai.burrp.com. We are a local startup that has listings of thousands of restaurants, bars, clubs and cafes in Mumbai. We have a very active community of people, who regularly contribute their reviews to the site.

We thought it would be useful to have a link to our site, as people can find eateries and hangouts rated and reviewed by the locals.

We encourage you to visit our site and check out its utility yourself. The url is http://mumbai.burrp.com/

Thanks, Anand Jain Burrp! India
