I'd like a second opinion

After looking through it again today I think most of what caught my eye was the same topics in the same order, but I did notice at least a couple of obvious overlaps, such as article:

I agree that it's kind of borderline. I don't think I'd tag, but do what I always do in such cases: "If in doubt, write the content yourself, thereby creating a new copyrighted work which can be included in Wikipedia without trouble." Before I take a shot at it, let me ask: are there other passages that seem particularly troublesome? I could review it myself, but I'm being lazy. After looking it over again, I spotted one other section that bugs me more than the rest. Article:

Hi, Leftorium you are incorrect on your assumption. I'm an avid cricket fan and so is my family. However the picture I have of Hanif Mohammad was not mine and therefore I've removed it from his infobox but you can delete the file as I don't know where it is stored. If your point is correct then in the image licensing why is there an option that says "All rights reserved". Silliman memorial lectures

I don't think you bothered to look at the discussion page before you accused me of using copyright material. I pointed out there that the section in question had been used for at least 100 years and was therefore out of copyright.

An example is at http://www.questia.com/read/53186245 - look at page v. The book is called Irritability and was published in 1913.

I am a little cautious about simply rolling back your change. I followed CorenSearchBot's instruction and it didn't succeed in discouraging you. So what should I do? That's not what I meant. What I'm saying is that it's common courtesy to ask the main contributors before nominating an article. I know that User:Esuzu is still working on the article (although he's been rather inactive this month) and he's only been able to work on the Biography section so far. The Linnaean taxonomy and Commemoration sections are still almost completely unreferenced and require more work. The article is therefore not ready yet. Sorry, but what claim to notability? "Its founder is Dick Hubbard, who stepped down as CEO from 2004-2007 to serve as the mayor of Auckland." is the nearest thing - and so? He stepped down to become mayor. What's that got to do with the notability of the company? That's him personally. The article is just a vanity/spam thing, which I have been watching for a while. We are half-way through our penultimate round, and nothing is yet certain. Pool A, currently led by Sasata (submissions) has ended up the more competitive, with three contestants ( Sasata (submissions), Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions)) scoring over 500 points already. Pool B is led by Casliber (submissions), who has also scored well over 500. The top two from each pool, as well as the next four highest scorers regardless of pool, will make it through to our final eight. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Planning has begun for the 2011 WikiCup, with open discussions concerning scoring and flags for next year's competition. Romanization for words of English origin

On the MOS:JP talk page, a discussion has been started about including or not including romanizations for words of English origin, such as Fainaru Fantajī in Final Fantasy (ファイナルファンタジー, Fainaru Fantajī) (for the sake of simplicity, I called this case "words of English origin", more information on semantics here).

Over the course of a month, it has become apparent that both the parties proposing to include or not include those romanizations cannot be convinced by the arguments or guidelines brought up by the other side. Therefore, a compromise is trying to be found that will satisfy both parties. One suggestion on a compromise has been given already, but it has not found unanimous agreement, so additional compromises are encouraged to be suggested.

One universally accepted point was to bring more users from the affected projects in to help achieve consensus, and you were one of those selected in the process.

What this invitation is:

• You should give feedback on the first suggested compromise and are highly encouraged to provide other solutions.

What this invitation is not:

• This is not a vote on including or excluding such romanizations.
• This is not a vote on compromises either.

The Greatest Story Ever Doh'd

Hello Lefty.

I've restored the edits to the pop culture references, as they are incredibly obvious; I can well see some obsccurity requiring a reference but if such obvious things had to have a reference, wouldn't there be one footnote with every item in the plot? An example is Homer singing lyrics to Maurice Jarre's theme to Lawrence of Arabia. What reference should be quoted? The tune is obvious and fits in the story. To those who haven't heard of Lawrence of Arabia,The Greatest Story Ever Told or the Golden Calf can see the films or look things up for themselves. When the tour guide talks about shooting people at Entebbe a person not knowing what he is talking about can see the Wikipedia link. What reference as a footnote would be made for that? Shall we limit every footnote of popular culture to an official press release or interview?

Yes, there are people who have a variety of obscure theories that would require justification, and some producers may want to disguise their references lest they face a lawsuit, but a spoof is protected. How to comment at copyright problems?

I am beginning to pay attention to the Copyright problems page, and I noticed you edit there. I want to point out that the CorenSearchBot seems to have a false positive with Kubrilesque, but the article has other problems, namely conflict of interest and no citation to independent sources to show notability. Hi. :) If you find a false positive at WP:SCV, just make a small note underneath it such as "No copyright concern: false positive" (it seems User:VernoWhitney has already done this with Kubrilesque, though). Template:SCV is really useful for that. As for the COI and notability issues, those should generally not be noted at WP:SCV. I saw you checked and cleared this one, reported by CorenSearchBot as a copyvio. I have had these inexplicable bot warnings before, and find them annoying and disturbing. The bot owner does not respond to requests for explanation. Is there a forum where the bot can be discussed? My guess is that 5% of the bot's logic gets 99% of the readily detectable problems, straight cut-and-paste issues, and there is another 95% of the logic that tries to be smarter, does not work well and causes damage. There is a sneaky way you can avoid the bot though: create articles in your userspace and then move them directly to the namespace. I'll see if I can find some more stuff tomorrow. To be frank, Frink is the only one worth saving. We should rebrand Radioactive Man so the comic is the primary focus. Dr. Nick, Cletus and Wolfcastle really are not worth fighting over. They will work fine as a nicely sourced section of the list. They're not really developed characters, all three are basically one joke. Lionel Hutz could be saved though. But, I'm amazed the guy didn't nominate Martin Prince (an article I thought we'd already got rid of) and Hans Moleman. Both of those are far less notable than the ones he did nominate. Hello, this is the second time this club was deleted. First it was deleted for copyright from their website by JamesBWatson, but as I am the Chairman, i hold the copyright so that was not a problem. Secondly you deleted it as not a notable entry - this facility supports 500 members, is frequently in the local press and the ex Captain of Wales - Paul Thorburn played for the club which makes it notable - not just in the local community but in Wales. I have massively changed the text from the initial entry to ensure it is not an advertisement and it just lists the facts and notable players. Thanks. About that one, IIRC, I thought that the primary source was US federal, so pd. But now I cannot find anything about it being federal, only county, and I am not sure if this is pd - so I rewrote anyway as part of my pass updating some old contribs of mine to modern standards, adding inline cites, and all. I urge you to restore the article, since it has no copyvio, rather it is the victim of a copyvio by the print book by Om Gupta.

No, I'm definitely not going to restore that article. Only a small portion was "copied" from "Encyclopedia of India Pakistan and Bangladesh" (it must have been copied from another website). The majority of the article was a copyvio of http://www.dhakacity.org/Page/About/Link/2/List_id/21/About_DCC and http://www.dhakacity.org/Page/Mayor/Link_2/Page/List_id_2/2/Subid_2/27/New_Subid_2/57/Function_of_the_Ward_Commissioners. By the way, this problem and a host of other copyvio problems seem to stem from a single user Tanweer Morshed (talk · contribs), who introduced a large amount of copyvio in numerous articles over 2009-2010. Well, congratulations. :) And complicating things, I've had more communication from the photographer and Roswell, and they would prefer to use File:Maggie Roswell-1.jpeg. I've explained that the attribution on the image might be removed and would not in any case be visible in the article, but the photographer prefers the close crop. It's uploaded; I leave it to you and the other contributors to the article to determine what to do now. • Pool B's close second was ThinkBlue (submissions). Awarded the top score for good articles and topics this round, ThinkBlue primarily writes content related to television and film, including 30 Rock.
• The first wildcard was TonyTheTiger (submissions). Awarded the top score for did you knows and valued pictures this round, TonyTheTiger writes on a number of topics, including baseball, American football and Chicago.

Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions) said "I'm surprised to have survived so far into the competition", but was extactic to see Finland in the semi-finals. Arsenikk (submissions) did not score this round, but has scored highly in previous rounds. We also say goodbye to Ian Rose (submissions), who withdrew earlier this month after spending six weeks overseas. Anyone interested in this round's results can see them here and here. Signups for next year's competition are now open. Planning is ongoing, with a key discussion about judges for next year open. WikiCup 2010 October newsletter

The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists – White Shadows (submissions), William S. Saturn (submissions), Staxringold (submissions) and ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.

Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.

The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. Rewrite review?

Just when you think you might be able to escape from copyvio work... could you compare Talk:Frederick James Gould/Temp to the primary source and see if you think it's clean enough? I've looked at it already but I'd like a second opinion. VernoWhitney (talk) 16:42, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

I think it still has some problems too, although it is an improvement from what it was, but I'm having trouble identifying the actual problem areas to give examples to the author - it just seems "off" to me (which isn't much help for rewriting). VernoWhitney (talk) 17:24, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Well, I think the third paragraph is the worst. Especially the last sentence.

In 1879, he married Mahalah Elizabeth Lash, and moved to London where he began working as an assistant master in publicly funded board schools in the East End. He was transferred from Bethnal Green to Limehouse in 1887 after his notes in the Agnostic Journal were seen by the school board, and he was exempted from teaching the Bible. In 1891, he asked to be allowed to resume Bible teaching on a reforming ethical-agnostic basis, but this was refused.[1]

He moved to London in 1979, where he married Mahalah Elizabeth Lash (1879) and worked for 16 years as an assistant master in London board schools. [...] His fully-signed notes in the 'Agnostic Journal' in 1887 were seen by the School Board, and he was transferred from Bethnal Green to Limehouse and exempted from Bible-teaching duties. The structure and language is just too similar. I think the best alternative would be to either summarize the text instead of paraphrasing it, or simply find more sources to expand the article and thereby avoiding similarities in the structure. Theleftorium ^(talk) 17:34, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

The Simpsons Game is an action/platformer video game based on the animated television series The Simpsons, made for the Wii, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, PlayStation 2, Nintendo DS, and PlayStation Portable. The game was developed, published, and distributed by Electronic Arts; it was released in North America in October 2007 and worldwide in November 2007. In the self-referential plot, the family discovers that they are forced to participate in another The Simpsons video game. Similar to the show, the game pokes fun at popular culture, other video games, and Electronic Arts, its publisher. The game follows the five Simpson family members—Homer, Marge (with Maggie), Bart, and Lisa—who learn they are part of a video game and are given superpowers to resolve several situations. Eventually, they must save their 8-bit predecessors from Will Wright, the game's antagonist, and the creator of their video game character selves, Matt Groening. Video game critics gave the game a mixed reaction. They praised its visuals and writing, which included many parodies of other video games, while they criticized its short length and poor camera system, which did not always function properly. The Simpsons Game received the Best Game Based on a Movie or TV Show award at the 2007 Spike Video Game Awards and was nominated for Best Video Game Writing at the 2007 Writers Guild of America Awards. Television episode non-free images

Since I know you've done plenty of work with The Simpsons episodes I figured you'd be a good person to ask: What are the general standards for inclusion of an image in an episode article (yours or a projects or whatever). I ask because it came up at WP:NFCR that there are a whole slew of images such as File:Classy christmas season 7.jpg with limited FURs and not much if any commentary on them in their articles. I believe the standards are higher than simply identification of the episode, but I'm not quite sure where the bar is set. Any feedback would be appreciated. As I understand it, a non-free screenshot should only be used if it would help readers understand the article (there's commentary about the scene in the article) and if the screenshot can't be conveyed in words. WikiCup 2011 May newsletter

We're half way through round 3 of the 2011 WikiCup. There are currently 32 remaining in the competition, but only 16 will progress to our penultimate round. Casliber (submissions), of pool D, is our overall leader with nearly 200 points, while pools A, B and C are led by Racepacket (submissions), Hurricanehink (submissions) and Canada Hky (submissions) respectively. The score required to reach the next round is 35, though this will no doubt go up significantly as the round progresses. We have a good number of high scorers, but also a considerable number who are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. Also, an important note concerning nominations at featured article candidates: if you are nominating content for which you intend to claim WikiCup points, please make this clear in the nomination statement so that the FAC director and his delegates are aware of the fact.

A running total of claims can be seen here. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. Your template message on my talk page about Ardmore Cricket Club

If you look at what the article said at the point I nominated it for deletion it said Ardmore Cricket Club is a cricket club in Ardmore, County Londonderry, Northern Ireland, playing in North West Senior League 2. and one un-sourced local, not national cup win - that makes zero claim to any significance. I do agree that by the time you declined the CSD it did make a small claim to significance ie a former test player playing for the club but it still fails WP:GNG and WP:CLUB . Removal of images in Simpsons articles

Hi Leftorium, I have noticed that you removed the following images from their articles: File:Two Cars in Every Garage and Three Eyes on Every Fish.jpg, File:Krusty Gets Busted.jpg, File:The Crepes of Wrath.jpg, File:Call of the Simpsons.jpg, and File:Homer's Night Out.jpg, I was wondering if there is a policy somewhere stating that screenshots cannot be used for infoboxes. I understand the the most recent episodes use promotional posters in their infoboxes, but it seems that posters don't exist for older episodes; as such, I believe that using a screenshot showing a key element that is discussed in the article falls under fair-use. Hi! No, there's no policy stating that screenshots cannot be used for infoboxes. There is, however, the non-free content criteria, and these images fail both the first criterion and the eighth criterion. The screenshots can be conveyed by text alone (the plot summary), and they don't "significantly increase readers' understanding of the topic" (the plot summary is more than enough). So there's really no need to use non-free images in these articles. After all, Wikipedia's goal is to be a free content encyclopedia. Theleftorium ^(talk) 11:54, 11 June 2011 (UTC)

Re:Need copyright help with images on Commons

I agree with your assessments- each image is problematic. The first two should probably be nominated for deletion; the logo that meets the threshold of originality should go to the AfD equivalent (which, I must warn you, is very slow) while the school logo could probably be hit with {{subst:npd}}. The others are a little more complicated- you could just hit them with no permission/nominate them for deletion, as above, but if you have reasonable grounds to believe the editor does own the rights to them, it may be worth contacting the uploader to ask them about it. Hopefully, you'll be able to get them to send permission to the appropriate OTRS address (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org) and then tag the images with {{OTRS pending}}. Technically, that's what the no permission template is for, but sometimes a more gentle approach is best. If you're unable to get a valid email (no replies, not copyright holder, etc), or it's not worth going to the trouble (useless pics, deleted article, etc), then the images should be tagged for deletion as above. Please don't. This is definitely not an uncontroversial move. As shown in the recent RM, "Grandpa" is by far the most common name in reliable sources. There is a more detailed reply at my talk page (regarding WP:COMMONNAME), but the gist is that this should go through RM, as it isn't uncontroversial. If the consensus at an RM determines that we (Wikipedia) should use "Grampa" then that's fine by me, but this should not be done by asking on an admin's talk page (which is akin to listing it at Wikipedia:Requested moves#Uncontroversial requests). Eragon changes

My understanding is that it is the image and details of the first published edition that should appear in the Infobox. Can we leave the article as it was ? No, "The image presented in the table should be the most significant cover historically for that book." The self-published version sold.. what, 1000 copies? Invitation to the Bacon Challenge 2012

Hello! You have been invited to take part in the Bacon Challenge 2012. In case you don't know or need a refresher, the Bacon Challenge is an annual celebration of bacon on Wikipedia in which editors come together to help create, expand, and improve Wikipedia's coverage of bacon. The event lasts all the way through National Pig Day 2012, giving participants plenty of time to work at their pleasure. In addition to the Bacon Challenge is the Bacon WikiCup 2012, a side event to the Challenge in which all bacon-related contributions done by those participating in the Challenge are submitted and scored by the scorekeeper (me) based on the scoring chart. At the end of the Challenge, the user with the most points in the Bacon WikiCup will win a shiny trophy for their userpage. In addition, the users who score the highest in specific categories (not yet finalized, but the categories include most image uploads, most article creations, most DYK submissions, and more) will win barnstars. Finally, all participants will receive a medal. While the awards are nice, in the end, the important thing is to have fun and enjoy what we're all here for, which is improving Wikipedia.

If you decide to participate, great! You may add your name to the participants list at the main page of the Bacon Challenge 2012, and pick up the userbox for your userpage if you desire. Signing up for the Challenge will also automatically enter you into the Bacon WikiCup. If you don't wish to participate, that's fine too - maybe next year! In the meantime, if you know anyone who might also be interested in participating, feel free to invite them! The Challenge is open to anyone and accepts participants at any time, so feel free to let anyone who might be interested know.

Note that I, the scorekeeper of the Bacon WikiCup, will be on vacation starting on the 18th of June all the way up until the 5th of July. I will have limited access to the internet, so I may or may not be able to score users' contributions during this time. Sorry for any delay in scoring (but since the Challenge lasts for more than half a year, there's no rush, right? (= ).

By the way, great job with There's Something About Marrying. If you're looking for cultural references to add, it might be worth noting that the couch gag (with the Stanley Cup) aired during the 2004–05 NHL lockout. Also, the episode is mentioned in a book I have called Simpsonology. I'll look it up for you tomorrow. There's also a brief mention of it in The Simpsons: An Uncensored, Unauthorized History in which the author is critical of the episode (again, I can add it tomorrow). And The Gospel According to The Simpsons has a page on it. It says that several activists commented on it, and I'll list their names so you can try finding more via google: Robert Castillo and Rick Garcia (both in the Chicago Tribune on Feb 21, 2005). I haven't checked Simpsonology yet (as I would have to comb through the book page by page). Have you tried looking for the Chicago Tribune article? Pinsky's book (which mentions some cultural references, such as Veronica singing Dude Looks Like a Lady) had a quote from Mike Reiss from some Australian magazine, but I was unable to find the original article. Also, it would be nice if we can find some comments from Julie Kavner (we do have an image of her now, which could be used in the article). WikiCup 2011 June newsletter

We are half way through 2011, and entering the penultimate round of this year's WikiCup; the semi-finals are upon us! Points scored in the interim (29/30 June) may be counted towards next round, but please do not update your submissions' pages until the next round has begun. 16 contestants remain, and all have shown dedication to the project to reach this far. Our round leader was Casliber (submissions) who, among other things, successfully passed three articles through featured article candidates and claimed an impressive 29 articles at Did You Know, scoring 555 points. Casliber led pool D. Pool A was led by Wizardman (submissions), claiming points for a featured article, a featured list and seven good article reviews, while pool C was led by Eisfbnore (submissions), who claimed for two good articles, ten articles at Did You Know and four good article reviews. They scored 154 and 118 respectively. Pool B was by far our most competitive pool; six of the eight competitors made it through to round 4, with all of them scoring over 100 points. The pool was led by Hurricanehink (submissions), who claimed for, among other things, three featured articles and five good articles. In addition to the four pool leaders, 12 others (the four second places, and the 8 next highest overall) make up our final 16. The lowest scorer who reached round 4 scored 76 points; a significant increase on the 41 needed to reach round 3. Eight of our semi-finalists scored at least twice as much as this.

No points were awarded this round for featured pictures, good topics or In the News, and no points have been awarded in the whole competition for featured topics, featured portals or featured sounds. Instead, the highest percentage of points has come from good articles. Featured articles, despite their high point cost, are low in number, and so, overall, share a comparable number of points with Did You Know, which are high in number but low in cost. A comparatively small but still considerable number of points come from featured lists and good article reviews, rounding out this round's overall scores.

We would again like to thank Jarry1250 (submissions) and Stone (submissions) for invaluable background work, as well as all of those helping to provide reviews for the articles listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Please do keep using it, and please do help by providing reviews for the articles listed there. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews generally at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup.
