The Touch of Your Lips

Thanks for all your recent album disambig work. I created a lot of the albums, and where the albums are named for songs, I disambigged them that the song could have the original title, and not the album. Sorry if that was incomprehensible!. I just want to avoid situations like God Bless the Child and Lush Life. Neither of these should be a disambig page, when most every link is named for the original song. Why did you move Time of My Life (3 Doors Down album)? This move seems to go directly against article title policy which says "Be precise, but only as precise as necessary." Help with correct move templates

Hi, thanks for your note. As you can see I'm having difficulty remembering the correct order/procedure to conduct a double shunt like this:

• Fear of God -> Fear of God (disambiguation)
• Fear of God (religion) -> Fear of God

Really there's only one step which is to open a WP:RM request on the Fear of God (religion) page requesting it be moved to Fear of God. You should format it as a multimove, as Fear of God needs to be moved to Fear of God (disambiguation). This is outlined in this section, WP:RM#Requesting multiple page moves. I hope that helps. Move / dab page help

Hi, I've seen you do a lot of article moves and dab page creating, so I thought you might know the best way to deal with this. I've just created Paul Hammond (musician), and there are two other Paul Hammonds, a footballer Paul Hammond, and a ballet dancer Paul Hammond (ballet dancer). Do we need a dab page now, or will hatnotes suffice? If you want to fix it up yourself, go for it, or let me know what to do and I can have a go. There actually used to be a disambiguation page (Paul Hammond (disambiguation)) so I'll resurrect that. I think it is worth having the page. It's not clear that the footballer is the WP:PRIMARYTOPIC. Last month the footballer got 239 hits, while the dancer got 328. You can also see from the incoming links to Paul Hammond that several clearly refer to somebody else. I'll have to do the moves myself as it'll require deletion. Thanks for your message. Tassedethe (talk)

Herbert Werner

Hi, Tassedethe
I am not sure why you changed 'Herbert Werner (U-boat officer)' to Herbert Werner on 12 Nov 2011. You stated that there was 'no need for dab'. I'm not so sure. I orginally put 'U-boat officer' to avoid any confusion. Googling the name produces many sites; one of them has a whole heap of Herbert Werners, and that is just in the US !

I have just noticed that a very similar question has been asked above concerning Time of My Life (3 Doors Down album), so I will quote from that entry: 'This move seems to go directly against article title policy which says "Be precise, but only as precise as necessary."'

There are many more articles on Wikipedia which have some detail after the person's name. To give three examples: 'name (footballer)', name (British Army officer)' and name (veteran).

I would urge you to think again.

We only add a phrase such as footballer or U-boat officer after a persons name if there is more than one person with the same name. This means we need to add a disambiguator to clearly differentiate them from each other. As there is no other person named Herbert Werner there is no need to add anything. Reginald Berkeley

See Reginald Berkeley (which you have contributed to) for my proposal to merge the two articles as I am certain that Reginald Berkeley (politician) and Reginald Berkeley (writer) are the same person, as confirmed by the obituary of Captain Reginald Berleley in The Times of 1 April 1935 page 9, which refers to his plays and also to his career as an MP (presumably not an April Fools Day hoax!). Camilla Wright

There were a bunch of links that need fixing that should have gone to Camilla Wright (badminton). It was quicker to move Camilla Wright, use WikiCleaner to fix the links and move the page back, rather than edit each page individually. I did a similar thing with Jens Olsson (badminton) as that was even worse. There's probably another way to do it but I don't use AWB. Tassedethe (talk) 19:12, 23 January 2012 (UTC)

Why did you remove the "c." from the bithdate of the Ferdinand Poulton entry at John Morgan. Do you know something his article doesn't?

My mistake. I'm using the dabfix tool and it adds the birth dates from the linked article categories. Ferdinand Poulton is categorized as Category:1601 births so that is what was put at John Morgan. I try and spot when this happens. Strictly if the birth date is uncertain the category should be Category:1600s births. I've just fixed it at John Morgan. Thanks for pointing it out. Lisa Miller

Hi there. I noticed your page move of Lisa Miller (24 character) and undid it, becauswe from my understanding most fictional articles (at least ones that I've seen) have the style of X (Y character) but I of course may be wrong. No prob. I see that Category:24 (TV series) characters has most dabbed names with character in them. I don't think that's usual for fictional characters e.g. Category:House (TV series) characters, Category:Oz (TV series) characters, Category:The Wire (TV series) characters, Category:The West Wing characters etc. I can't find a particular relevant guideline, so I can't point it out. Dragongirl (novel)

Hi. I have arrived from User:Tassedethe/dabs/noveldab, after scanning "What links here" at Dragongirl, newly a redirect. I am the primary author of the article about the novel, now at Dragongirl (novel).

1. What is the meaning of the listing at your noveldab? Do you know of multiple dragongirls that should be the subjects of wikipedia articles?

2. Dragongirl is newly a redirect to Dragongirl (novel). Evidently User:Tokyogirl79 (see User talk:Tokyogirl79#Dragongirl (novel)) made the change today (many hours ago in Japan?) by wholesale cut-and-paste-over a Stub with the latter name. None of that stub is worth preserving but the article history is now left behind at the redirect Dragongirl.

3. I recall my surprise that there were no other dragongirls at wikipedia; I guess the disambiguation is warranted; I suppose you know more; Tokyogirl may know more but she didn't say it. Perhaps this should be undone, and redone by moving Dragongirl with its history. Are you an administrator who can do part of this quickly?

The top of my User:P64/Sandbox now contains the material necessary to reconstruct current Dragongirl (novel) from yesterday's Dragongirl.

Hi P64. The page noveldab is something for my own benefit, I'm trying to identify pages where either a) the page somearticle doesn't also link to somearticle (novel) or b) where somearticle (novel) exists but somearticle doesn't. Anyway user Tokyogirl79 has made 2 mistakes. If there is only a single topic then there is no need to have the addition of (novel), ie the article should be at Dragongirl not Dragongirl (novel). Also content should never be cut and pasted from one place to another as it means the history of the article is lost. I am going to reverse those edits. I will leave a note at Tokyogirl79's page. I was updating a related article I had created at the same time, Max Page (actor), and happened to go to that page via the disambiguation page, only I didn't because the redirect I thought I had created and forgotten was in fact an article. MSU Interview

Dear Tassedethe,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the community HERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. Stephen O'Donnell (Partick Thistle footballer)

For football disambig we don't disambig by the club they play for. Its done by nationality if only one or by year of birth if more than one. I hope you will put the page back where it was to allow it to be moved via request move channels as that is clearly not an appropriate disam.Edinburgh Wanderer 22:19, 19 February 2012 (UTC)

Well there is already a Scottish footballer Stephen O'Donnell (Scottish footballer born 1983), so Stephen O’Donnell (Scottish footballer) is inappropriate for this player. And his birth date isn't listed so I chose the club he plays for as a suitable alternative. Also this page title uses the wrong type of apostrophe (per WP:APOSTROPHE) making it doubly bad. Redirecting to the main page is standard if there are multiple ambiguous dab pages. For instance Stephen O'Donnell (footballer) already redirects to Steve O'Donnell. Do you have a more preferable alternative to (Partick Thistle footballer). If we had a vague idea about his age then we could use a (Scottish footballer born c. 1994)? This article (2008) says he is 16 so that would give us Stephen O'Donnell (Scottish footballer born c. 1992)? Would that be OK? This article [3] has his exact date. 11.5.1992. It should be 1992 we just wouldn't use the club how many times do you think that would need changed especially if he becomes a journeyman. He was born in 1992 as I've added it to article. I can't see anything wrong with those pages. Talk:Rob Baker (guitarist) is correctly at Rob Baker (guitarist) and Talk:Rob Baker was deleted (by me) as Rob Baker now redirects to Robert Baker. All that was previously at Talk:Rob Baker was a redirect so it was deleted as WP:CSD#G6 - Talk page is a redirect created by move of associated article. Is there something in particular you needed me to fix?

The previous discussion seems to centre around the individual notability of the guitarist. WP:MUSICBIO has the relevant guideline (at the bottom): Note that members of notable bands are redirected to the band's article, not given individual articles, unless they have demonstrated individual notability for activity independent of the band, such as solo releases. Tassedethe, I'm not (at this point) trying to reverse the WP:DELETION decision leading to the WP:REDIRECT. I'm going through the Canadian music category tree trying to ensure that all musician articles belong to both:

Regardless of what situation is going on, User Hut8.5 has reverted and deleted informative articles that seemingly would help Ohio voters. Ohio House of Representatives has been reverted to be now incorrect and dated; the Template:Members of the Ohio House of Representatives has been reverted. Page moves in prep for disambiguation

Until recently disambig project tags served no purpose, no one was using them to rate or track disambig pages. Disambig pages were being tracked using the dab and hndis templates. Hi there, I see that you have deemed that Steve Marsh (footballer) is no longer the Primary topic. I think that you are relying too much on page views and not enough on long term significance. The footballer is recognised in a national hall of fame. The other is a bit-part actor and commedian. Recent clean-up of James McGovern

Hello, Tassedethe. You recently cleaned up the page James McGovern to bring it into compliance with MOS:DAB. Thank you. However, I think you introduced one mistake. One bullet point contained a red link to James McGovern (boxer), plus one blue link to boxer. MOS:DAB says, "Red links should not be the only link in a given entry; link also to an existing article, so that a reader (as opposed to a contributing editor) will have somewhere to navigate to for additional information."

That rule is to ensure that the reader will find additional information on the red linked article. Boxer contains no information on James McGovern (boxer). In fact that red link is only linked from Willie Pep. It doesn't seem clear that this is in fact a boxer of any notability whatsoever. BLP article titles and dob

Hi

I cannot find anything that gives policy or guidelines (or a discussion) on using, or not using, dob and dod in BLP article titles. Can you possibly point me to something that I can read that will clarify this for me?

I understand that there seems to be something that happened around 2008/09 that caused a lot of articles to be retitled (e.g. [5]), and that there was a previous trend to change from (b. 1900) to (born 1900), but after spending a good 30 mins searching through policy and guidelines pages and another 20 through archived discussion, I am still none the wiser.

Hmm. I think I found something, WP:QUALIFIER: "The disambiguator is usually a noun indicating what the person is noted for being. Some of these are standard, commonly used tags, such as "(musician)" and "(politician)". Try to avoid abbreviations or anything capitalised or containing hyphens, dashes or numbers (apart from where more specific guidelines specify particular exceptions to that), and also try to limit the tag to a single, recognizable and highly applicable word. Years of birth and death are not normally used as disambiguators (readers are more likely to be seeking this information than to already know it) although this may be necessary when there are multiple people with the same name and tag, such as Andy Gray (footballer born 1955), Andy Gray (footballer born 1964), and Andy Gray (footballer born 1977)." So generally you don't use the dob or dod unless there are multiple people of same name, same occupation and perhaps same nationality. I hope that's useful. As I thought, it is used predominently for disambiguating, I am thinking that dates were used to db, and now the other articles have been deleted, there is no need for them. In reality, some I have seen are sole-use of the names, and so nothing is necessary to db, neither dob nor tags.

Red links article in Disambiguation page

Hello!! Tassedethe. I am writing to you as I think you may guide me in to this query.

There are many diambiguation pages, where you can find red links like John Chambers, where you can see that names like John Chambers (footballer), John Chambers (role-playing) and John Chambers (scientist) appear, for which there are no article pages.

I had recently removed the name but have been re-instated by other editors [6] saying no,redlinks are OK when mentioned in an article and given a blue link in the dab page entry in edit summary.

Please can you guide me which is correct as per policy. Can we have names of persons on db page, who have no article in their name on wiki.

Because, if the policy allows this then there is a major flaw in Wiki policy. Anyone can add any name of any non-notable person or company in disambg page, for which no notability or citation are required.

Hi Jethwarp. Yes it is OK to add redlinks to a DAB page. The relevant part of the guidelines is at MOS:DABRL. You can check if a redlink is linked from a different page by clicking 'What links here'. So for John Chambers (footballer) you can see[7] he is linked from Kidderminster Harriers F.C. as he was their manager. Of course if you feel that a redlink will never have an article written about them then you should remove the link, per WP:REDLINK. If you feel that the person or company is entirely non-notable then you should remove the link and text from the other article, and from the DAB page. Properly formatted DAB pages should have a relevant bluelink for each entry. So the footballer would be like so:

• John Chambers (footballer), former manager of Kidderminster Harriers F.C.

The other entries aren't as clear cut. I doubt an article can be written on either but they're not obviously non-notable. A better option would be to have an entry like so:

• John Chambers, NASA scientist who posited Planet V, a hypothetical fifth planet

Disambiguation pages for initials often get entries in which the article linked makes no mention that it is known by those initials. E.g Compare Damon Knight with Darren Knott. My edit summary is meant to indicate that the entries removed weren't known as DK. ($PAGENAME is similar to a Unix environment variable, obviously not clear to all. It just means I can use the same edit summary for all such edits.) The Don't Know entry was removed as none of the articles linked contained information on this usage. It was also near to a dictionary definition, the link to wiktionary is provided at the top of the page. Disambiguation pages are not articles, they are navigational pages providing links to the appropriate articles. The Don't Know entry didn't have an appropriate article, apart from wiktionary, so I removed it. If you had a source for this usage then it should be added to an article, then it could be linked from the DK page. I'm not sure which article, if any, is appropriate. I've noticed some cases where you've moved an article (for good reason) but not the associated talk page - see Talk:Bill Hedworth (pipemaker) for example, though I'm just about to move that one to Talk:Bill Hedworth to match the article. I always move talk pages with articles. This is a problem caused by a bot User:Yobot. I moved the page on July 9, Yobot created the Talk page, in the old location, on July 11. Thanks for moving the page though. Tassedethe (talk) 12:53, 31 July 2012 (UTC)

Template:PASpeakers‎ correction

Thank you for your good work on Template:PASpeakers‎, using Wikipedia:CLEANER. I am particularly interested in technical and automated methods of making corrections, and I was pleased to learn more about Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser at Wikimania 2012 in July. I see that your change corrected a link to a biography of a particular Speaker of the Pennsylvania House, from a link that previously went to a disambiguation page. I might explain that I have created several biographies of Speakers, and plan to create more.

Please tell me whether the CLEANER tool can find and correct the links in the template, or whether the tool starts with a particular disambiguation page, or with a particular biography. --DThomsen8 (talk) 19:03, 12 August 2012 (UTC)

WikiCleaner can work both ways. You can give it a page (or a template) and have it report any links to disambiguation pages. Then you can can select the correct link from the dab page to correct the page (or template) being processed. Or you can give it a disambiguation page and find all the pages that link to it.
