- @Barkeep49: It is distressing! An IP editor put maintenance tags on many of TW's articles. December 2017 North American winter storm went live on the main page last night and the DYK regulars had to scramble. You might be interested in this discussion about RFA candidates responding. - By the way – having ultimately come down on the oppose side, I want you to know that I think you're a rockstar and you make this site a better place. I failed RfA twice as a teenager. The first time, I withdrew less than 24 hours in with support under 40%. The second time looked like it would be successful midway through, but an avalanche of opposition ensued during the final two to three days, and it sank straight through the discretionary range – by the end, it had become such a mess that even with a clear-cut no-consensus result, it still remained open for 12 hours past the scheduled closing time. I wish I'd had the wisdom then that you displayed when you withdrew yesterday. I felt bad switching to oppose, especially since I had been likening your avalanche to my own, but I was extremely impressed by your decision to pull out when there was still a chance you could have passed. And with such a graceful withdrawal statement, too! Once you've made good on your commitment to heed the opposition's concerns – and I have every bit of faith that you will – then frankly I would be delighted to nominate you. I look forward to reviewing your article. I was directly affected by the subject storm, and remember it (as well as that entire March) vividly. Post-RFA comment and thanks
I thank everyone’s kind comments and awards regarding my withdrawn RfA; I really appreciate it! These comments are definitely uplifting and I’m looking forward to another run sometime later in the future. They’re also encouraging; and I also appreciate and thank everyone who participated in my RfA. I’m not terribly impacted by this; although there have been somber moments after the RfA that I’ve endured. Nonetheless, I’m looking forward to enjoying this project as I have done before.
The reason why I’m posting this at this time and not earlier is because the RfA was subject to end now. And while my RfA was not successful, I’m extremely grateful for the support, and I will definitely learn from the opposing and neutral votes/opinions and take them to heart. I will also look into the RfA in general, particularly my answers to questions, to learn what mistakes I’ve made and my delayed response to some. Again, I appreciate and thank everyone’s opinions at my RfA, and I’d like to thank my nominators once more, Barkeep49 and Ingenuity, I can't thank enough for their support. Once I gain further experience and fully learn from the opposing and neutral votes, I will consider re-running; but in the meantime, I’ll contribute as much as I did prior to the RfA, learn from the RfA, and start 2024 on a good and high note. - mediawiki2latex is a tool that converts wiki content into the formats of LaTeX, PDF, ODT, and EPUB. The code now runs many times faster due to recent improvements. There is also an optional Docker container you can install on your local machine.
The way that Random pages are selected has been updated. This will slowly reduce the problem of some pages having a lower chance of appearing. [1]

The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 9 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 10 January. It will be on all wikis from 11 January (calendar). [2][3]

MediaWiki validates the source code to protect other site functionality from syntax errors, and to ensure scripts are valid in all supported browsers. Previously, Gadgets could use the
requiresES6option. This option is no longer needed and will be removed in the future. [5] - Bot passwords and owner-only OAuth consumers can now be restricted to allow editing only specific pages. [6]

- Starting Monday January 29, all talk pages messages' timestamps will become a link. This link is a permanent link to the comment. It allows users to find the comment they are looking for, even if this comment was moved elsewhere. This will affect all wikis except for the English Wikipedia. You can read more about this change on Diff or on Mediawiki.org. [15]
- There are some improvements to the CAPTCHA to make it harder for spam bots and scripts to bypass it. If you have feedback on this change, please comment on the task. Staff are monitoring metrics related to the CAPTCHA, as well as secondary metrics such as account creations and edit counts.

- Following a motion, the Arbitration Committee adopted a new enforcement restriction on January 4, 2024, wherein the Committee may apply the 'Reliable source consensus-required restriction' to specified topic areas.

Miscellaneous
- Voting in the 2024 Steward elections will begin on 06 February 2024, 14:00 (UTC) and end on 27 February 2024, 14:00 (UTC). The confirmation process of current stewards is being held in parallel. You can automatically check your eligibility to vote.
- A vote to ratify the charter for the Universal Code of Conduct Coordinating Committee (U4C) is open till 2 February 2024, 23:59:59 (UTC) via Secure Poll.
