Guideline and policy news

• Following a talk page discussion, the Administrators' accountability policy has been updated to note that while it is considered best practice for administrators to have notifications (pings) enabled, this is not mandatory. Administrators who do not use notifications are now strongly encouraged to indicate this on their user page.

Arbitration

• Following a motion, the Extended Confirmed Restriction has been amended, removing the allowance for non-extended-confirmed editors to post constructive comments on the "Talk:" namespace. Now, non-extended-confirmed editors may use the "Talk:" namespace solely to make edit requests related to articles within the topic area, provided that their actions are not disruptive.
• The Arbitration Committee has announced a call for Checkusers and Oversighters, stating that it will currently be accepting applications for CheckUser and/or Oversight permissions at any point in the year.
• Eligible users are invited to vote on candidates for the Arbitration Committee until 23:59 December 11, 2023 (UTC). Candidate statements can be seen here.

The prose itself does not have a template, but the infobox on a person ({{Infobox person}}, link is Template:Infobox person) is a template, along with the reference list ({{reflist}}, Template:Reflist). One piece of advice is, prior to creating the article/draft, ask yourself, does the person meet notability guidelines for biographies? Do you have a conflict-of-interest with the subject? If the latter, follow the procedures of declaring your conflict-of-interest. I recommend starting a draft on the subject if you're unsure of the subject satisfying notability guidelines. Recent changes

• On Wikimedia Commons, there are some minor user-interface improvements for the "choosing own vs not own work" step in the UploadWizard. This is part of the Structured Content team's project of improving UploadWizard on Commons. [1][2]

Problems

• There was a problem showing the Newcomer homepage feature with the "impact module" and their page-view graphs, for a few days in early December. This has now been fixed. [3][4]

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 12 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 13 December. It will be on all wikis from 14 December (calendar). [5][6]

Future changes

• The 2023 Developer Satisfaction Survey is seeking the opinions of the Wikimedia developer community. Please take the survey if you have any role in developing software for the Wikimedia ecosystem. The survey is open until 5 January 2024, and has an associated privacy statement.

Quick note about copypatrol

Hi!

Just wanted to follow up on our conversation from a few months back. Since then, the instructions on meta:copypatrol have been updated in to state [i]f you fixed the problem, tagged the page for revision deletion, or tagged the page for deletion as a copyright violation, mark it as "Page fixed", pursuant to this discussion. This was a change from the previous instructions, which simply stated [i]f you fixed the problem or tagged the page for deletion as a copyright violation, mark it as "Page fixed".

I was on copypatrol the other day and I encountered a few copyright violations that you had remedied by tagging them for revision deletion. Thank you for taking the time to help out with this. I also noticed that for some of them, such as this one, you hadn't marked them as "Page Fixed" on copypatrol. I've gone ahead and marked these sorts of entries as "Page Fixed" for you in recent cases.

Going forward, when you tag a page for revision deletion based on a copypatrol entry, would you please also mark the page as "page fixed" in copypatrol, in line with the updated instructions?

Changes later this week

• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 19 December. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 20 December. It will be on all wikis from 21 December (calendar). There is no new MediaWiki version next week. [7][8]
• Starting December 18, it won't be possible to activate Structured Discussions on a user's own talk page using the Beta feature. The Beta feature option remains available for users who want to deactivate Structured Discussions. This is part of Structured Discussions' deprecation work. [9]
• There will be full support for redirects in the Module namespace. The "Move Page" feature will leave an appropriate redirect behind, and such redirects will be appropriately recognized by the software (e.g. hidden from Special:UnconnectedPages). There will also be support for manual redirects. [10]

Future changes

• The MediaWiki JavaScript documentation is moving to a new format. During the move, you can read the old docs using version 1.41. Feedback about the new site is welcome on the project talk page.
• The Wishathon is a new initiative that encourages collaboration across the Wikimedia community to develop solutions for wishes collected through the Community Wishlist Survey. The first community Wishathon will take place from 15–17 March. I'm the city clerk for the City of Decatur, Iowa. Recently, we finally got around and had the Iowa Secretary of State fix our city's incorrect name in their records to match all other state and federal agencies. I have written proof from the voters within the city and from the Iowa Secretary of State's office we are the city of Decatur and NOT the city of Decatur city. I've updated what I could on the wikipage but can't change the heading or the link from Decatur City to Decatur. How can I edit the heading/title and the link to our city? I've been playing Sonic Robo Blast 2, a fangame and my first Sonic game, since Final Demo 1.04 (~2003-2005). Tails was always orange for me, but I was unsure as your userpage title is yellow and the Wikipedia article about Tails (Sonic the Hedgehog) says something in that direction too. Hello, @JustinDCC! You may start by fixing the issues noted on the top of the article, placed in a maintenance template. One issue I immediately spot is that both references in the article are primary references, and a large portion of the article is unsourced. Adding reliable, secondary sources would fix those issues. Regarding the suggested change in the national variety of English on that article, I think the change is okay, considering that the first author used British English and the article is an international topic, with the creation in this edit. Just saw your withdrawal at RfA earlier. I just wanted to say as a fellow Wikipedian don't feel like this is a failure or something but rather see this as a learning experience. Sometime later on, try reading over your RfA and see what areas you can improve on. I definitely believe that you can- and will- be a great admin one day, it's just that the some of the community decided that you need to brush up on some policy knowledge and appplication for now. Anyways, thanks for being brave enough to step up at RfA in the first place. Remember, some of the best folks in our mop corps did not pass RfA the first (or second or more, in some cases) time round and who knows, in the future you might end up passing (I myself definitely see you succeeding, for sure). I know that I can't speak for your experiences 100% cause I haven't put myself forward at RfA, but know that I will be there for you and I have faith in you as an editor. Withdrawing at 80% with only ~36 hours left shows character. I still supported and was going to go back and comment to that effect. Welcome to the club of folks who didn't pass the first time. No hard feelings. Get yourself back together (an RfA is wildly taxing) and then go back to what you were doing. Take a hard look at the feedback you received in the process and embrace it like when a friend mentions your shoe's come untied. You are unchanged. You are just as valuable to the pedia as you were before. More, even. Takes a lot of gumption just to stand there and take a kicking. You've earned my respect because you have demonstrated your willingness to defer to the community and your commitment to improve. This is NOT a defeat. This is the next step.
