Your area of expertise....

A stub article for Bhisham Kohli's 2002 version[1] of Aakheer is at AFD... not to be confused with his 2007 remake.[2] Is it souracble? Salvagable? Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 04:47, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

Argh.. its one of those "almost B movie" cases. Would have released in a few obscure theaters and gone straight to video/satellite TV next. Such films almost never get mainstream reviews (even in vernacular sources). The best we can do do is prove it exists but i dont think we will be able to find any reviews or coverage.--Sodabottle (talk) 04:54, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
Sorry to give you that headache. Had there been an article on its director, I would have encouraged a merge/redirect... specially as he does seem to himself be prolific enough to be notable. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 06:58, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

Lost Stories

Um....Lost Stories are signed to Tiesto's Blackhole Recordings, have been tremendously supported by 8 of the worlds top 10 DJs; including world #1 Armin van Buuren ("Tune of the week, Massive track by Lost Stories!") and have also had their tracks and remixes in the top charts of leading download portals like Beatport & Audiojelly! They have also completed official remixes for Markus Schulz, Andy Moor, BT, Andy Duguid and Mr Sam among many others! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.164.16.245 (talk) 20:16, 12 September 2010 (UTC)

The "notability" i have mentioned in the AfD is Wikipedia's notability criteria. For bands, it is listed clearly in WP:BAND. If Lost Stories meets any of the criteria listed, then please prove it by adding reliable sources that can verify the claims.--Sodabottle (talk) 03:57, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

Lost Stories wikipage

Hey,

The Lost Stories needs refinement & updation which i can do this weekend, but shouldnt be deleted. Their myspace has voice clips of the world #1 DJ Armin van Buuren praising their music, which is released on huge lables as listed on discogs - http://www.discogs.com/artist/Lost+Stories They also have 3500+ fans on facebook so obviously arent some fake smalltime act - www.tinyurl.com/LostStoriesFB We are new to Wikipedia entries (obviously) and dont really know what else counts as credible sources?

Please advise.

Deepak bookings@loststories.in —Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.164.16.13 (talk) 21:21, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

No of fans in facebook and praise from well known musicians is not the criteria used for including bands in wikipedia. The criteria is listed in WP:BAND and the references for any assertions (like reviews, praise from fellow musicians etc) should come from reliable sources. For meeting the reliable sources criteria, the coverage must be in independent third party media like newspapers, magazines or TV shows. The band's website itself doesn't count as it is a primary source. So look for such coverage, use it to source the article. Don't worry if the article gets deleted (it looks like it will be). As long as you can meet the conditions for inclusion in wikipedia (notability per WP:BAND and the quality of coverage through WP:RS, the article can be recreated. I suggest, you recreate it in your userspace, ask someone to review it if it meets wikipedia's policies, then move it into actual wikipedia mainspace. --Sodabottle (talk) 04:15, 16 September 2010 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Pending changes/Straw poll on interim usage

Hi. As you recently commented in the straw poll regarding the ongoing usage and trial of Pending changes, this is to notify you that there is an interim straw poll with regard to keeping the tool switched on or switching it off while improvements are worked on and due for release on November 9, 2010. This new poll is only in regard to this issue and sets no precedent for any future usage. Your input on this issue is greatly appreciated. Off2riorob (talk) 23:49, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

i know. some day. :) i am assuming your move there is based on your belief English wikipedia is still not very useful for a large number of Tamil wikipedia users. I have been trying to convert a lot of my friends into wikipedia users and so far I havent had any success. good luck. --CarTick 19:19, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
Your assumption is partly correct. My experience at the semmozhi manaadu was an eyeopener. There is great demand for solid Tamil content and its upto us to step up. But there is a more selfish motive to my move. I first went there to try and win a laptop (failed miserably ;-)). Then i started writing Tamil books and now i need to polish up my long dormant tamil language skills.
And we have started a campaign to kidnap En wiki Tamil contributors to ta. wiki. LogicWiki is our newest recruit. ;-). So i thought i would make the pitch to you too. The best thing there is there are very few edit wars going on and i have a clear field to produce content rapidly. Sometimes it is like an echo chamber, where one is operating alone, but amazing amount of work gets done--Sodabottle (talk) 19:27, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
i believe you. it would be easy to translate featured articles from English wikipedia. My Tamil is not very good and still havent figured out how to write in Tamil online. --CarTick 19:31, 25 September 2010 (UTC)
I use NHM writer for phonetic transliteration. There is an alternate and faster method called tamill99, but it has a steeper learning curve. If you use linux, SCIM packages are available.--Sodabottle (talk) 19:35, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Help - Using ta.wiki Images in en.wiki

Hi Soda,
Can you help me in using ta.wiki Images in en.Wiki. I want to use ta:படிமம்:Tanjai1000.jpg, ta:படிமம்:Tanjai_stamp.jpg, & ta:படிமம்:Rajarajancoin.jpg Images in en.wiki. Pls help me. ----Raj 6644(தமிழன்) 11:06, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

We can't use cross wiki images. Only commons images can be used across wikis. For these download them to you pc. upload them to en. wiki again with detailed fair use criteria (else they will be deleted)--Sodabottle (talk) 11:13, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
Ok. Small request. I know u'll b busy but still can you upload the above ta.wiki images in Commons.WikiM. Because really i'm not conversant in using appropriate Image Copyrights policies. Too many image usage policies. really they are confusing which one to use & how to use. Those are all very informative images & i dont want them to be tagged as CV. Will u pls upload al those. i require it for all expanding Brihadeeswarar Temple - Commemorative Stamp and Coin Release----Raj 6644(தமிழன்) 11:42, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
we can't upload them to commons as the Govt of India owns the copyright and commons does not allow copyrighted or fair use images. They are very strict in this matter. You upload them them to en wiki. i will try to write the fair use rationale properly. (i think en wiki fair use policies won't allow them to illustrate Raja raja, but we can still try)
I think i'm done Soda. Pls have a look unsigned comment added by Raj6644 (talkcontribs) 13:03, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
I have added some more lines to the fair use criteria. But am still not sure, whether these will stand scrutiny (en. wiki sometimes is very strict on fair use and sometimes lenient. So be prepared to accept deletion ;-)). If you want to be absolutely sure, ask Moonriddengirl to take a look. She is our inhouse expert on all copyright issues.--Sodabottle (talk) 13:15, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
First you said Commons is Strict & asked me 2upload in en.wiki!!!. And now "en. wiki sometimes is very strict on fair use" :) God help meeeeee.----Raj 6644(தமிழன்) 13:28, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
copyright is always tough ;-). And our govt keeps all its images to itself. what to do. I should have meant - commons is ultra strict - no fair use images at all. Anyway, ask MRG, she would know right away if they are ok or not. --Sodabottle (talk) 13:33, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
use of fair use images is somewhat against the purpose of what wikipedia is for. we should try to avoid it as much as we could. please try to find a free suitable image. --CarTick 14:51, 28 September 2010 (UTC)
Okay, am not expert here, but arent the last 2 images taken from newspaper? Looks like a picture from some tamil daily for me which means the copyright is with them and not the govt.Correct me if am wrong. Srikanth (Logic) 17:46, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

If someone takes a picture of something already copyrighted, they dont own the copyright of the photograph. For example if i take a photo of a 5 rs coin without adding something to the arrangement which changes the presentation significantly, it is still considered a representation of the original coin design. The photos in question faithfully reproduce the govt's image, so GOI is the copyright holder.--Sodabottle (talk) 17:51, 28 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks to every1 for clarifying the Copyrights related issues. Lets see whether the images can withstand the scrutiny. If not then will approach MRG or some1. ----Raj 6644(தமிழன்) 04:22, 29 September 2010 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free image File:Flipkart.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Flipkart.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of "file" pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk 03:14, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

Hello. The Flipkart logo is surely {{PD-textlogo}} rather than a non-free logo. The textlogo template is for logos which "only consist of typefaces, individual words, slogans, or simple geometric shapes", just like this one. The template goes on to say that "these are not eligible for copyright alone" because the do not cross the threshold of originality. They can be, and are usually, protected by trademarks and similar, but not by copyright. Angus McLellan (Talk) 21:25, 3 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for clearing that Angus. I had thought since "flipkart" is not an existing word, that arrangement has crossed the threshold originality and is applicable for the logo too.--Sodabottle (talk) 03:58, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

PD-India doesn't apply here if it was published in a London paper. And if it was a london paper the copyright status is not clear per PD-UK. (70 years from the death of author and if author unknown 70 years from publication). Since we cannot conclusively prove that the author is unknown, it isn't PD yet. Commons is strict in such cases, so we cant upload it there. Probably upload it to ta. wiki with a fair use rationale.--Sodabottle (talk) 03:34, 17 October 2010 (UTC)

image clarification

Hello guys, please see that asking again & again it disturbs me. I am trying to make the best work that I can meeting the norms. Raising questions again & again clearly violates the trust on a regular user who does work based on true facts/events. I agree kamal with sivaji.jpg ( no 4 and 5 ) feels like a screen-shot from the movie Thevar Magan, so you are doubting that. This image I got from my collections if you can prove the copyright claim, I give you the right to do what you feel like. I have lot of connections in Tamil cine world. I cant explain all here. Beleive me I am truthful guy and want to be. But raising questions on Ilaiyaraja the maestro.jpg, Anbazhagan.jpg is not at all fair -- all are incidents inheriting with my previous works. Beleive me, give some air to inhale. All are bowing arrows at me in a single shot. Jayalalitha image is already there in wiki but not in wikicommons, so I added it. Trust me here - whatelse you want me. Please !!

I owe you all with good respect and continued experience working so long here. But do not view all like the same. I started in wiki casually. You know I use wiki right from year 2004 heavily. But all these times I never made efforts/learned whats going behind wiki & others. Seeing me daily constantly using wiki, one of my friend told me some basic instructions how to edit wiki. So I slowly started and now just like it doing. I do work based on my heart and truth. I am not mistaking you for all that you do, but never never take all cases to be the same and since you had experienced before like this and expecting it to be the same. what can I say, I feel I am throwned away.

You currently appear to be engaged in an edit war according to the reverts you have made on Ram Sharan Sharma. Users who edit disruptively or refuse to collaborate with others may be blocked if they continue. In particular the three-revert rule states that making more than three reversions on a single page within a 24-hour period is almost always grounds for an immediate block. If you find yourself in an editing dispute, use the talk page to discuss controversial changes. Work towards wording and content that gains consensus among editors. If unsuccessful then do not edit war even if you believe you are right. Post a request for help at an appropriate noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases it may be appropriate to request temporary page protection. If edit warring continues, you may be blocked from editing without further notice. -- Cirt (talk) 21:45, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

Please, engage in discussion, and if necessary, WP:Dispute resolution processes, at Talk:Ram Sharan Sharma. -- Cirt (talk) 21:47, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

I don't believe this. So now removing libelous claims from a BLP is considered edit warring? I tried to talk to the user in the article's talk page, and then in his talk page. He kept adding the libelous claims back and then started using abusive edit summaries. The fourth time i reverted, i promptly went to ANI asking others to take a look. The user then libeled the subject in the aNI thread (which had to be redacted) and warned. He abused other editors who agreed with me that the material was libel and had to be removed. The discussion was moved to BLP noticeboard where atleast four other editors (off2riorob, dougweller, dgg) agreed with my original position, that the additions were libel. The user then insults us some more there and disappears and all appears quiet.

Now you pop up seven days later and template me along with the libeler. Please read the threads before you drive away vandalism reverters with such thoughtless actions.--Sodabottle (talk) 05:16, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

There were a lot of reverts going on, back-and-forth and back-and-forth. Best to step back, report the matter, and engage in discussion, at the article's talk page, and if necessary, pursue WP:Dispute resolution. -- Cirt (talk) 05:39, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
There were about six reverts over two days. the second day i exceeded 3rr went straight to the ANI thread. And whats with putting "discussion" in quotes?. You are seriously suggesting i hold hands with a libeler and encourage him?. I was civil, to the point and told how to add it to the criticism section, if it can be sourced.
so if someone keeps adding "x is a paedophile" (unsourced) to a blp, i am to wait and report the matter and seek dispute resolution?. Did you even read the ANI and BLP noticeboard threads? --Sodabottle (talk) 06:48, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
You could try to get someone else to intervene, rather than the back-and-forth reverts. -- Cirt (talk) 06:50, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
It was a BLP and i was being bold. Once i exceeded the 3rr limit i went to the ANI. This was not a content dispute. He was adding personal research and libelous statements for days in the article. A few other people had already reverted him without success. I step in, manage to stop him and i get slapped with a edit warring template. I don't think you are going to admit you made a mistake. I will drop it here and keep your template as an example what happens to people who try to revert vandalism --Sodabottle (talk) 07:01, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

Sodabottle has generously dropped the matter but it is worth noting that the removal of libelous or poorly sourced contentious material in a blp does not count as edit-warring. Warning him implies that the admin has examined the edits and concluded that they are neither libelous nor poorly sourced. (There is also not much point in warning an editor several days after the 'edit-war' has ceased, nor is it necessary to use a template on a long-time editor such as sodabottle, but never mind.)--RegentsPark (talk) 13:59, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

This is a systemic problem. i wouldnt blame anybody. nobody has the time to go to root of the problem. unfortunately, wikipedia has established a tradition in which both responsible users and vandals are treated equally when there is edit warring. as often has been the case, vandals with a strong agenda-driven resolve have their way. I agree with RP, Soda has an excellent track record. --CarTick 14:59, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for the kind words RP and Cartick. I contemplated dragging Cirt to the ANI noticboard, but thought better of it. The best that could happen is i get a perfunctory apology. So decided to drop the issue and let him bug someone else. I guess he was working out of some edit warring list and automatically templating everyone. (thus the seven day lag before the template appeared here). --Sodabottle (talk) 15:13, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
Hi Sodabottle, I agree with the comments here, I have always found you a responsible contributor. I also felt unduly templated by this user:cirt yesterday, and other users commented that he also protected articles without need. Off2riorob (talk) 15:33, 9 October 2010 (UTC)

  Civility Award
IMHO, this whole matter with Ram Sharan Sharma has been handled by Sodabottle in the best possible and civil way (this includes not pursuing Cirt who IMHO acted in WP:GOODFAITH though IMHO was wrong in this matter). Ipsign (talk) 06:37, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

DMK - ADMK

Hey. Just a quick query. Thirumavalavan seems to claim in one of his books that there was an atempt by KAP Vishwanathan to unify DMK and AIADMK during MGR's time. Is that true? Wiki San Roze †αLҝ 15:12, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

it appears correct! --CarTick (talk) 15:35, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
Yes this was in 1980. indira was a common enemy to both. indira dismisses mk in 76 and seems like she will be back to power in 80 after janata coalition falls apart. So biju patnaik flies down to chennai in 80 and attempts to forge a common anti-congress front in TN. the formula was mgr stays on as CM while MK stays on as party head. There was one direct meeting between MK and MGR, but MGR backed out a few days later. MK then did the whole "neruvin magalae varuga, nilayana aatchi tharuga" and went over to the Congress camp. In nenjukku needhi (or some other interview i am not sure) he claimed, it was panruti ramachandran who spoiled the rapproachment effort. --Sodabottle (talk) 17:11, 14 November 2010 (UTC)
here is MK's version of the story. --Sodabottle (talk) 17:19, 14 November 2010 (UTC)

Special recognition

  Award of Special Recognition
I am honored to present you with this barnstar in special recognition of your continued good work in improving the encyclopedia in the area of Indian Cinema, as most recently exemplified by your improvements to the article Aastha Chaudhary. Where others sometimes fail in their searches for sources, you succeed. I am proud to be able to congratulate you on your continued diligence. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 21:16, 15 November 2010 (UTC)
Thanks MQS :-)--Sodabottle (talk) 04:56, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

illayaraja image.

Hello sodabottle. You too join with others and claim I am the criminal. Sodabottle you know very well that in Ilaiyaraaja article on para "Impact and musical style" as accordance to the statements quoted by mani ratnams view - the non-free rationale image is added and truely it depicts that. Even that image page purpose of use - clearly states that use. That image is mainly to illustrate the article. It is not possible to replace it with others. Touch your heart and speak here. You know the truth.

And in other image illayaraja with kalam is truely in the public domain and gave that reference also. It is found on picasa album on public domain. Its usage is neutral and normal. Sodabottle I see you and others as wikipedian with experience. But mistakenly I am viewed as a thief for all I do and especially user SpacemanSpiff always treats me like a wanted criminal. This is not fair sodabottle. Along with you I also want to do my best on improving articles, especially missing really very very important core datas and facts. Understand me. Allow me.

Ungal Vettu Pillai (talk) 00:20, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

The Illayaraja with Kalam is not in public domain. There is a big copyright sign with all rights reserved sign on the Picasa page. You are still trying to pass it off as being in public domain. Thats stealing and lying. Like i said before, i am done assuming good faith with you. And regarding the Fair use criteria for the other picture, it applies if the image itself is adding anything extra to the article and is being described in the article. This is the last time i am going to reply to you in my talk page of yours. Quit bugging mer--Sodabottle (talk) 04:45, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

That was good work. very impressive for a new user :-). I have created the redirect as you suggested. For Tamil Nadu related articles, other than me users User:CarTick and User:SpacemanSpiff are currently active. User:Wikiality123 is semi active. Cartick, wikiality and me are the history/politics guys. Spiff is an administrator and usually takes care of admin related actions. For Tamil films, Johannes003, EelamStylez and UniversalHero are the currently active editors. --Sodabottle (talk) 17:19, 16 November 2010 (UTC)

yes he was in the awful Bharathiraja film called Kangalal Kaidhu Sei. Disappeared after that. The second movie uyirezhuthu was announced. but i am not sure if production began or not. doesn't meet our WP:ENT. I have prodded it.--Sodabottle (talk) 05:55, 21 November 2010 (UTC)

Languages

Reg this, I think the IP was right here, don't think it's really relevant to this article, no? —SpacemanSpiff 13:36, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

mmm.. you are right. i saw the section blanking and reverted automatically. will self revert.--Sodabottle (talk) 13:37, 18 November 2010 (UTC)

Reg this, I think the IP was right too. The article uses a mix of both with BC-AD being more common, so for consistency sake the IP changed to one single form; as you can see, in some of the changes the original used BC-CE which is even worse (e.g. "Scholars categorise the attested history of the language into three periods, Old Tamil (300 BC – 700 CE),"). cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 07:05, 22 November 2010 (UTC)
doh! i dint see that. have self reverted now.--Sodabottle (talk) 07:36, 22 November 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 2 - November 2010

English WikiProject News

After a missed issue, the WP:IND newsletter is back on track to being a regular bimonthly feature. The Indian WikiProject has seen plenty of online and off-line action, both in English as well as other Indian languages, and we now have a bigger, better format that intends to feature content and news from the English as well as other Indian language Wikipedias.

Reaching out to Indians has been the theme of the Indian Wikiproject over the past couple of months, aiming to involve a greater number of Indians in editing both the English and Indian language Wikipedias. To this end, efforts to set up the Indian chapter of Wikimedia have moved into their final stages, and registration of the society is currently pending. An effort is underway to push for "WikiMarathons" at meetups, where attendees will be encouraged to edit the English and/or Indian language Wikipedias. This is intended to popularise Wikipedia editing among the general public. In addition, a bot to post DYK's from the Indian Wikiproject to Twitter was created and launched by User:Logicwiki.

What's New?

Regrettably, the number of Featured Articles has dropped from 63 in June to 58 at the end of October 2010. Several FAs came up for review and were delisted, while Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties of India was saved. Meanwhile, Chalukya Dynasty appeared on the main page on July 9, 2010. Hearteningly, the number of Good Articles increased from 130 to 136 during the same period, while the number of Featured Lists remained constant at 16.

The source code for the Article Alert Bot is now available and the bot itself is expected to be up and running very shortly. This means that article alerts for the Indian Wikiproject will again be available, enabling editors to easily keep track of developments in respect of reviews, nominations, deletions etc.

The date change vandal mentioned briefly in the previous issue made a reappearance when the range block on his IP range expired in September. Consequently the block was extended till September 2011.

In October there was a heated discussion in the India project noticeboard regarding the copyright status of the Indian party symbols. The discussion was triggered by the deletion of Wiki San Roze's party symbol images by Hammersoft as copyright violations. No resolution was reached, partly because of our inability to explain to Hammersoft how election symbols in India differ from party logos. Comments are requested from anyone with a background in Indian copyright law to clarify this issue.
