afd process

I do understand the afd process and I have followed it technically. The difficulty with me and many is how wiki defines the WP:BEFORE. They have failed to list the tools that users need to identify whether a particular page needs the afd process. I recommend wiki listing in WP:BEFORE all the tools such as [1]that you gave me to find out why someone is wiki notable. That should along with other tools solve my problems of nominating wiki pages for afd. Pl. reply it here. --kaeiou (talk) 02:37, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

When i said you were not following AfD process properly, i was referring to your first few noms, when user SpacemanSpiff was pointing out that you weren't completing step 3. Anyway returning to the case of WP:PROF, it is more of consensus rather than hard numbers (as DGG explained it). I suggest going through old AfDs to see what the community thinks (or the talk pages of WP:PROF). There is clearcut consensus in cases like WP:ENT, WP:POLITICIAN, WP:AUTH or WP:GNG. So my suggestion is to read WP:BIO fully along with some old AfD cases, where it will be illustrated with examples.--Sodabottle (talk) 04:47, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
Who are consenus? (you and I know who they are). Are they experts in the field or professors? It was just you and me on Chopra's notability. Let me know if you have additional tools. Thanks.--kaeiou (talk) 13:09, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Dimple Yadav

Hmm, I'm not sure how your changes pass WP:POLITICIAN. Essentially we now have a stub which says "she lost an election, and was mentioned in a story about asset fraud". Is that really notability, and under what terms? I wonder if anything useful here would be better merged into her husband's article or his father's, as the scandal seems to centre round them, not her. Black Kite 14:06, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Point taken. I accept your rationale. A separate article is not warranted now. I will merge the info with Akilesh Yadav's article. Since i (prematurely) removed Prod, can it be prodded again or should this have to be taken AfD --Sodabottle (talk) 14:11, 7 March 2010 (UTC)
I don't think there's any need to delete it, just redirect it to wherever you merge the information. Black Kite 19:57, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Pandyan Dynasty

Take a look? Have any history books? Really dubious content in the article right now. I don't have any specific books at hand, mine cover the dynasty in a very generic manner. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 06:28, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

I have been meaning to get there. I plan to finish the individual articles on kings, cities etc and then move on to the original big article. May be in May or June. (have a couple of other "big" rewrites planned before that).--Sodabottle (talk) 06:48, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
There's some casteist stuff creeping in there; if you can clean that out soon that'll be good :) —SpacemanSpiff 06:49, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
The "villavar" and "maravar" stuff. yeah i saw that. i cleaned up the "early pandyan kingdom" article, i will wait a day before sanitising the "pandyan dynasty". Previous experience shows, the caste warriors will edit war if i revert immediately, but if i wait a couple of days, they go away. I will take a look and do clean up tomorrow.--Sodabottle (talk) 06:52, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
I hope one day we can tag all the caste articles with {{original research}} and {{disputed}} tags and not have to worry about edit-warring to re-add them until the problem is resolved. —SpacemanSpiff 06:56, 8 March 2010 (UTC)
-). It gives me a headache to just think about them. Its already bad enough to deal with them in real life :-)--Sodabottle (talk) 06:58, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

Spaceman, you're paranoid: [2],[3]. Whatever. Sasisekar (talk) 06:59, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

One more:[4]Sasisekar (talk) 07:25, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

Your version (Early pandyan kingdom) says "Sarangdwaja participated in the Kurukshetra". This is wrong not to mention unreferenced. His name is Malayadwaja. Read the link that I gave. "In sangam tamil lexicon, Pandya means old country", ha!. Pandyan kingdom is considered old country as it was the first kingdom but it does not mean "old country" nor is the word Pandya derived from it.Sasisekar (talk) 07:33, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

Don't worry we can discuss here. If i can refrain from reverting Fconaway's edit (he reverted mine) last week, I can refrain from reverting yours. Sasisekar (talk) 07:38, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

I will move the discussion to the article talk page, that way it gets archived for future reference. --Sodabottle (talk) 07:41, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

Protection

I've protected your TP for an hour and UP for a day because of the socking attacks. I'm going to be away from my computer in another 5-10 min for a good while, so if you want it unprotected in that time, check with another admin. cheers. —SpacemanSpiff 19:36, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Thanks Spiff. I have reported this at AnI. I will ask for protection if he comes back.--Sodabottle (talk) 19:38, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

Tamil Nadu assembly complex

This is a possible DYK candidate. Currently I see this only taking about the latest complex, Can we have it to mention the history of various complexes, their architecture, historic moments and pictures to make it into WP:INRC?.Was there I heard quite a bit of history of various assembly complexes used for TN / Madras assembly in news, so getting RS shouldnt be a problem. We shall hope we get a picture of the new complex soon, otherwise I would have it when i go there next time in a month. Also keeping a watch on flickr. Srikanth (Logic) 12:11, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

A summarized history of the locations is Legislature of Tamil Nadu#Location. The references for this section has more details on the various locations and why the assembly moved. For DYK, we need a five fold expansion of new material, which unfortunately we (me and CarTick) have already put into the Legislature of Tamil Nadu article. So lets skip DYK for this unless we can lay hands on new material for five fold expansion. And regarding the recognised content. Yes I intend to nominate the legislature article to GA soon. Chola Dynasty

I have seen your comments on my talk page. I am busy with a few things today and will give a reply to you later in the day today itself. To put it short, I have reliable info about all points except help to Seunas and Kalachuris by Kulo III. That book is in my office library and I will source it in due course.

Thanks. In the meanwhile, you seem to have some pre-conceived notions about my 'history'. If that is so, kindly see the Chola Dynasty talk page where I and Arvind (Vadakkan) have had interactions and his comments about my sources and contributions. Hopefully, that will help you gain the right perspective.

Srirangam99 (talk) 04:44, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

I am waiting for the refs. If you had provided the sources on the first addition itself instead of first adding without sources then adding with refs that say something else and then saying you are busy, this entire reverting business could have been avoided. If you have the RS to back you up, why not add the thing in the first place with all references?. That said i will wait till tomorrow, if you haven't added the sources, i will revert back. I need no "notions about your history". your contribution history and block log give enough hints about it. --Sodabottle (talk) 04:51, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
And your are introducing broken ref links in the article. Please use the correct ref tags next time.--Sodabottle (talk) 04:56, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
I only used the RS in the form of two books available with me. They are two books by K.A.N.Sastri from which I have quoted and which you have also seen. I admit I am very bad at editing and I added the text from RS (and ended up placing broken ref links) in a form of continuing text. I think from next time, what I will do is (if you permit) get in touch with you and express the desire to place such and such text (from RS, of course) and you can help me by appropriately placing it in the concerned article.
I trust that you are a senior wikipedian and do have a neutral way of looking at things. I have never denied that I am very weak in editing etc. which I have conceded to everyone I came across in wiki. You can again check my so-called block log which was nothing but wanton reversion by another established wikipedian (who had an admin for protection) who never came into the article or tried to mediate in content dispute but straightaway started by stating he was blocking me and then coming up with the reasons. The usual practice as I understand is that if someone is committing a mistake then a senior admin first comes in and explains the mistake a newbie is committing and then he can also warn him that in case the same mistake is repeated then the newbie can get blocked etc.
That is why I said please read the talk page of Chola Dynasty, because there too after repeated discussions, even arguments with Spaceman Spiff initially arguing and even Arvind (Vadakkan) objecting to my contributions (with me not only keeping up my stance as well as giving detailed explanations on relying on my sources), the seniors finally did believe I have a case and commented on the quality of my contributions.
Sad to note that you too are repeating the same stance as was done by another admin in concluding about my blocks. In fact Sebastian Helms was a neutral admin on this topic and despite chiding me for my not being able to format or edit texts, he did help me with some points and even accepted a few contentions of mine. All the block logs you are talking about happened before this neutral intervention and I would like to inform you that soon after this, the person responsible for lodging false complaints against me and getting me blocked have become absent from wikipedia.

Srirangam99 (talk) 10:06, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

I am coming up with the RS on the third point about Veera Ballala II facing difficulties from Seuna and Kalachuri, on the Chola Dynasty talk page. Kindly see that page after a short while.

Srirangam99 (talk) 10:13, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Fair enough. I will format the refs and text from your talk page sources.--Sodabottle (talk) 11:24, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi. (what should I call you, I feel odd referring to you as Sodabottle, though Bottle seems to me to be fine. My real name is Srinivasan and I live in Sahibabad (very close to the Delhi border). You can call me Srini or Cheenu (both are fine).
I have come up with two more bits of RS on the Chola Dynasty page. But one of them is showing as [1] which I do not like as it is from a different page from the same book. Could you help with editing and formatting. The text I placed (I feel) is in the right place. But howsoever you place is acceptable to me. Only that the two refs I placed may reflect separately (in ref numbers).
Thanks in advance.

Srirangam99 (talk) 08:15, 24 March 2010 (UTC)

Hello, once again, it seems that you did not see my above post (of 24th March) could you do something. In case you desire, you can reply to me either on the Chola Dynasty talk page or on my talk page. Even if you choose to reply on this page itself, it is fine with me. I will check out all the three talk pages.Srirangam99 (talk) 13:47, 25 March 2010 (UTC)

Hi, could you please tell me why you are removing the contents of the article 'Sainoj'???????? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 122.167.7.61 (talk) 13:23, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

I am "cleaning up" the article according to wikipedia policies. Wikipedia has some policies about what can be written and how it can be written. a) No copyright violation should be done - I am removing the photo and the links to youtube as they are copyrighted material b)I am writing it in a language and style which is accepted and recommended by wikipedia (read WP:MOS). Also the sainoj article has been currently nominated for deletion. If the above violations (copyright and style) are not corrected it might end up being deleted. Trust me, i want to keep the article in Wikipedia and doing my bit to help it.--Sodabottle (talk) 13:27, 19 March 2010 (UTC)
Thanks to all your hard work, Sodabottle, I have just withdrawn the nomination. It looks like a nice stub, a firm foundation for further building and a definite asset for Wikipedia. Thanks again! B.Wind (talk) 16:18, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

Re: Kumar Rajendran's photos

The problem is that the images uploaded by the user and deleted in Wikipedia:Possibly unfree files/2010 March 9 were marked as free when they were professional images of actors, historic events, etc, and lacking information on date/authorship/etc. One can make an argument for fair use, but the images did not have a rationale. However, you can ask the deleting administrator to undelete an image you believe can be used under fair use and then add a free use notice and rationale to the image page if he/she accepts you request. Is it all 117.204? That range is quite busy. —SpacemanSpiff 06:43, 1 April 2010 (UTC)

Yes, apparently he was active yesterday too, if you change from 50 to 500, you'll notice that. I'll ask a CU to check out collateral damage to logged in editors, I can't see that. —SpacemanSpiff 06:54, 1 April 2010 (UTC)
FYI, I think the number vandal's range can be narrowed down a bit tighter than 117.204.*.*. Over the several weeks I've been cleaning up after this guy, I think his address has always been 117.204.1**.***, i.e., something in the 100s range in the third set of numbers. Jodha/Akbar and Asoka Story

i would like to know more about these people....if you would know about them profoundly... Eshper (talk) 11:27, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

There i would be of no help as unfortunately no personal details of these subjects have survived (if they existed in the first place). What we have now are only collection of legends and oral histories (which would have changed greatly over time and thus highly unreliable). What remains now is only highly romanticized versions of what could have happened. :-(. --Sodabottle (talk) 11:33, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

Since I know that you're one of the active editors in TN-related articles (though more interested in politics), I request you to take a look at Puthandu and its talk page. Thanks Sundar. The images i had in mind are :
  1. Historical pictures in State Public Information archive - I saw in the news sometime back they have a digitization project and they conducted an exhibition in Chennai displaying them. They usually give authors permission to reprint but takes connections to make a request. If they can put the archive only by CC license, it would be great help
  2. Portraits all CMs past and present. Portraits of all governors past and present.
  3. Portraits/thumbnails of MLAs (as available in assembly.tn.gov.in
  4. Pictures of the new legislative assembly complex

Yes i am going. Ta Wiki is planning to put up a wikipedia stall i think and i have volunteered. I will be definitely there full day during the weekend (its like a 30 minute bus ride from my home). On the weekdays, not full day, but for lesser time as the day job workload permits. --Sodabottle (talk) 03:58, 29 May 2010 (UTC)

Ramanathapuram Population & Madurai rulers

Couldn't find the religion wise population in the given link in Ramanathapuram page. Please provide exaact link with sub pages. Also why have you simply neglected the rule of Madurai Sultanate rather than formatting it. Wasifwasif (talk) 14:29, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

  1. I have corrected the Census link now. Due to the 2011 census, all 2001 TN data has now moved to this URL
  2. I dont quite understand your query about the formatting of Madurai Sultanate. I have left the primary quotes of Ibn Battuta and Gangadevi as such instead of paraphrasing them because they are first hand accounts. To paraphrase/read into them would border on original research. Some historians of Madurai like Narasaiah, use more stronger terms to describe the Sultans (like "kolaikaaran", "padupaadhagan" etc), i didnt want to do that. So i merely took quotes from both accounts which corroborated each other and put them there. Ibn Batuta is very reliable as a historian so, his primary descriptions are enough to describe the sultanate without paraphrasing them--Sodabottle (talk) 14:53, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

I don't see anything in that page that constitutes copyright violation. The Wikipedia article is on a person who calls himself as "DJ Chef" - the article is not written on behalf of the subejct. As such an article in Wikipedia does not constitute copyright infringement. You should be taking up this issue (through legal or other means) with the subject (the person who calls himself DJ Chef) himself.--Sodabottle (talk) 17:49, 1 June 2010 (UTC)

Madurai population

Hi Soda bottle, The article mostly talks about Entire madurai (Thiruparankundram, AlagarKoil etc.,) and not only the city. So its better to mention the population of urban agglomeration. Whats your thought?

Actually we dont need the population number in the lead - just the mention it is no 3 in tamil nadu and no 2 till 2001 is enough. the demographics section explains everything so we need repeat statistics in the lead.--Sodabottle (talk) 09:54, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

advice needed ==

Hi Mr Sodabottle,

Amazed at the stars you have received for your work. I need some advice from you.

I would like to create a page for Dr P Umanath IAS the current District Collector of Coimbatore district. In fact, I did create one but it was deleted almost immediately, despite the fact that I put a hang-on tag.

I can I improve my chances of having that page permanently? What other details about the page I can give you to help me better?

thanks in advance.

A request

Sorry for the delay in replying. And thanks a lot for mailing the link with the pages. :-) Unfortunately I could not open the .rar file as I do not have a licensed version of Winzip in my PC. Anyway, I feel that I have sufficiently expanded the article C. Rajagopalachari and I have nominated it for GA. However, my week-long leave comes to an end and I'll be leaving for my workplace this night and I do not have internet connection over there. So, I may not be able to edit Wikipedia as much as I had over the past week. So, I request you to handle the GA-discussion. I also request you to look after two new articles Aavin and Naihaa which I have created and ensure that no one tags them for deletion. About political parties in India

Hello, Sodabottle

I would kindly draw your attention about List of political parties in India and List of recognised political parties in India. User Soman and User Viplovecomm are reverting my edits because they think that in India there isn't two national political parties like INC & BJP, as a result they had put other smaller political parties like CPI(M), RJD or SP into national category. But in my view INC & BJP are the two parties who achieved their national status more of all they ruled in India but my friend user aren't agreeing with please take a part of this complex discussion.--Kkm010as© 10:37, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

Early Pandyan Kingdom

Hello Sodabottle,

I have added an information regarding the Etymology of "Pandyan" from the Source of Ramayan!

Shall I know why you reverted the information? I gave citation for that, did you noticed it or not?

If you feel that my information is not correct or inappropriate, please clear me! I will revert it!

if you are unable to find where they mentioned Pandya's in Ramayan goto this page

and press Ctrl+f and type "paandya" not "pandya".

you can also see verse containing Chera and Chola!

World Classical Tamil Conference 2010

is it worth nominating for ITN with some fundamental work? looks like a heavily viewed articleand. --CarTick 00:56, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

Philosophically i am against spending effort on that article :-). I considered bringing it upto a GA level a week before and decided in the long run, it doesnt add value to the encyclopaedia or Tamil.

BTW the Tamilint conference begins thursday and i will be there on thursday-sunday. Tamil wiki has been given 6 stalls - a huge space considering biggies like Microsoft etc have been given only 2 each. I was there on Tuesday tagging along with Tamil wiki coordinator Ravi. Saw Stalin and KKSSR but didnt have my camera at that time so couldnt take pics. Most of the senior Ta wiki editors will be attending in the last two days (Sundar will be coming as a delegate i think).

And i forgot to tell you, i entered the Ta wiki essay contest a couple of months ago and translated most of our election/politics article into Tamil. They didnt win, but about 50 of our and Ravichandar's articles are now going to be in Ta wiki. --Sodabottle (talk) 03:50, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

sounds real good. wish i was in Coimbatore now. pls tell me more about the essay contest. who won the contest then? by the way, pls carry a lot of batteries and memory space with you for camera. :) --CarTick 04:03, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
Govt of TN organised a article contest in April for Ta wiki as part of the Tamil internet conference. First it was restricted to college students, but later opened to members of the public. This is the official website and these are the winners. About 3000 entries were recieved of which 1200 were deemed encyclopaedic (unfortunately "katturai" for tamils means something to do with quotations, intro, summary and a lot of empty rhetoric inbetween). Entries were solicited in a wide range of subjects - science, arts, medicine, sports, education etc. The first prize was a laptop so i decided to take a shot and brute force it (no limit to the number of entries per person). There was a 500 word limit for entries. I translated all our election articles (19) of them and some of Ravichandar's CM biographies. Plus a few more of my own history/cinema/miscellany articles. Total worked out to be 52. Tawiki Ravi (one of the organisers) says one of them came close to being third, but the rest didnt quite make it to the top. I am currently wikifying them in my ta wiki userspace--Sodabottle (talk) 04:21, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
wow. u r amazing. i admire your hard work and persistence. --CarTick 04:32, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
One of my relative Dr.SMA Kather is giving a speech on sunday 12:30-1:30 on "Thuckalay Peer Muhammad waliyullah and Kavichakravarthy Kambar. - A comparison". Got a special entry ticket. But unfortunately couldn't make it to Coimbatore becuase of next day office. I hope the "World tamil classical Conference" article will be in a good look after the conference since people like Ravi, Sundar etc., have geared up. Missing a lot. Wasifwasif (talk) 06:13, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

I was about to ask you whether you were planning on attending (given your location), but I see that's already been answered :-) Great to see ta.wiki receiving good attention here. Would you be able to write a summary of the event after its conclusion - I think it would form a nice theme for the next edition of the WP:IND newsletter (which has been lying dormant for some time and needs to be revived)? Try and take lots of pictures if you can. All the best! Regards, SBC-YPR (talk) 14:25, 23 June 2010 (UTC)

I can do that. I think it will be a little tight on thursday and friday because only a few of us will be there to man the stalls. But On saturday and sunday atleast 10 Tamil wikipedians will be there. So there will be lots of time to report and photograph.--Sodabottle (talk) 14:34, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
Is there any chance if i can join our Tamil wikipedians in that stall if i visit the conference on saturday.? If yes, Whom should i get in touch with? Eagerly waiting for your reply.Wasifwasif (talk) 14:45, 23 June 2010 (UTC)
Wasif, those attending have already applied for ID cards (we havent got them yet). We are still not sure who will be let in or not. Only tomorrow morning we will find out. Stalin? A ghost? --RegentsPark (talk) 17:07, 28 June 2010 (UTC)
i meant our crown prince M. K. Stalin :-)--Sodabottle (talk) 03:49, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
I often wonder if Karunanidhi still admires Stalin 57 years after his death and his son's birth. --CarTick 03:53, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
Probably yes. Most of the Tamil vernacular sources on Lenin and Stalin come from CPI, CPM, CPIML, Ma.ka.i.ka owned publishing houses. So the communist leaders are always portrayed as heroes who stopped fascism and hitler. The great purges, molotov-ribbentrop pact, gulags, deportation of class enemies are all whitewashed or downplayed. So for a person who reads only Tamil books for gaining world knowledge, Stalin remains a hero. It is blasphemy to question party line in those circles. MK is a widely read man (in Tamil), so probably he still admires Stalin.--Sodabottle (talk) 03:59, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 1 - (June 2010)

Project News

WP:IND Newsletter is back! It's been nearly a year since the last edition, but we hope to bring out issues on a more regular basis now. The India Wikiproject was set up to increasing coverage of India-related topics on Wikipedia, and over the past few months the focus has been on improving article quality. A number of the project's featured articles underwent featured article reviews over the past year. Of these, Darjeeling and Flag of India survived the review process, while the rest were demoted. During the same period, Gangtok, Harbhajan Singh, Darjeeling and Mysore were featured on the main page respectively on August 20, September 17, November 6 and December 29, 2009. Meanwhile, articles on topics as diverse as Political history of Mysore and Coorg (1565–1760), Marwari horse and Iravan were promoted as featured articles, and respectively appeared on the main page on March 25, May 17 and May 28, 2010. Consequently, the number of FA-class articles under the project's scope dropped from 67 in August 2009 to 63 in June 2010. The number of good articles, however, saw a more than 40% increase, from 91 to 130 during the same period, while the number of featured lists saw a 33% increase from 12 to 16.

Due to the recent policy changes regarding unreferenced Biographies of Living People (BLPs), an effort was started in January 2010 to source all unreferenced BLPs coming under Wikiproject India. 1200 such articles were identified initially and more were added to the list later. Due to the sourcing effort, the number of Indian unreferenced BLPs is down to 565 currently. During February-April 2010, There was a large scale disruption of Kerala related articles by a Thrissur based IP vandal. Editing from a dynamic IP BSNL connection, the vandal changed dates of birth, death and ages of a number of Malayalam and Tamil film actors. Later he added a few international biographies to his list. He also marked some living people like Arvind Swamy as dead. A month long range block was imposed on his IP range two times and each time he came back to vandalise dates once the block expired. Currently the range has been blocked for three months till September 11, 2010.
