Your alma mater is not your ticket to Wikipedia

Thank you for reading "Your alma mater is not your ticket to Wikipedia." I'm not as new to Wikipedia as my user history indicates because I used to edit a bit as an IP editor. I have an interest in a few areas, included New Jersey, notability policy, and university-related topics. I have a question. I have suggested on the talk page for the Notability (academics) that part of the notability guideline should be re-written because it seems convoluted and self-contradictory. I've gotten a fairly negative feedback from a few editors, with the implication that this policy is "off-limits" to change. Am I biting off more than I can chew by trying to modify a notability guideline? - — Preceding unsigned comment added by NJ Wine (talkcontribs)

Looking at it, I think that ends up to be biting off a bit more than you can choose. The notability guidelines are almost impossible to change, and if you do want to change them, it should be in small steps. Not large ones. If you would like to change guidelines like that in the future, I suggest that you begin with something in your sandbox. Ryan Vesey Review me! 05:34, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

AfCs

Hello!
Completely new to this part of wiki, i wonder how these AfCs work. I know what they are for and how they theoretically work. But then what happens of articles that are rejected? I see that those editors plainly dont care about going through AfC and straight away start the article. This is with reference to recently declined AfC Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Byah Hamari Bahu Ka which now has its fresh article Byah Hamari Bahu Ka.
It could be that the AfC team does take some action on this. I could be too soon in pointing this out. After all the article was made not even an hour ago. §§AnimeshKulkarni (talk) 12:52, 25 May 2012 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Well, AfC was created as a way for IPs to create articles, since anonymous users lack the technical ability to make pages in userspace (that's also the reason that most AfCs are on talk pages: so IPs can edit them). What this means is that when a registered user creates an AfC, they do not have to follow through on it, and can just create their article directly. Yes, its a flaw in the system, but without limiting article creation to, say, autoconfirmed users, there's nothing we can do about it. Hope you don't mind me jumping in Ryan Nolelover Talk·Contribs 13:34, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
Oh i see! So a non-autoconfirmed user cannot create a new article? §§AnimeshKulkarni (talk) 15:00, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
Well, a registered user can create articles, so honestly the only thing preventing IPs from creating anything is a five-minute registration. IPs cannot create, and although that is a very low standard in my opinion it will not be changed per decision of the WMF (there's a very long backstory on that one...). Nolelover Talk·Contribs 15:13, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
Nolelover is right, so I'll address the other issue. In response to your question about taking action, generally not much is taken. AFC is designed to be a more strict process of adding an article to Wikipedia. If an article gets added through AFC it shouldn't ever be deleted. As the article exists now, I'll just slap a couple of tags on it. Ryan Vesey Review me! 17:12, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
I was going to slap an uncategorized tag and a nofootnotes tag on it, but I just added categories myself and the CN tag takes care of the no footnotes issue. Ryan Vesey Review me! 17:16, 25 May 2012 (UTC)
Thanks Nolelover for the explanation. I get that nothing much can be done here. One more question. When a certain AfC is rejected, do the project members or some Admin somehow get some automated intimation of article being created? I stalk few editors because they are SPA. (We are guessing them to be production companies of these TV serials.) Hence i came to know of this article. But if this doesn't happen, AfC would mean just a small hurdle and delay. §§AnimeshKulkarni (talk) 18:53, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of File:Wikipedia error message as seen on the page Sheela Murthy.png

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on File:Wikipedia error message as seen on the page Sheela Murthy.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Accents

Hello Ryan, saw your chat on WormTT's page and just wanted to say hi and hopefully enlighten you. The UK is really diverse for an island of 62 million (possibly 63 with illegals since i started writing this) and i never understood why Americans say "British accent" as if there is only one. I've not heard "American accent" very often solely because i understand there are many from different states and so i've personally spent many years wondering why so many American TV programmes use British accents from the 1800's. There's tonnes of regions in the UK and tonnes of accent's, which is why it's always strange to hear a posh sounding fake accent from a top hat wearing dandy from the 1820s. Personally i have a Brummy (Birmingham) accent as i've been told by a Yorkie (Yorkshire not the dog) accented girl at college who exclaimed that i can't say "Car" and instead say "Caaaa". Arguing otherwise just gave her more words i "ent pronouncin' propaly" Accents...they're a pain. Everyone has one...Although it could be worse, i could have a Geordie accent. "D'ya waaan't haave s'morr pet?". Pretty much every region in the UK has people with different accents from another region. Hope i enlightened you as another tea drinker here. Night! Jenova20 22:25, 29 May 2012 (UTC)

Actually, you'd be surprised Jenova. Many Americans would have difficulty distinguishing between the number of accents in UK, and would only hear a generic UK accent (or maybe 2-3). Hard to believe, but true. Depending on how often you listen, you can start to hear more differences. For example, I believe you'd be much better at telling the difference between a Birmingham accent and a Dudley accent than I would, and I'd be better at telling the difference between Exeter and Plymouth. Ryan may not be able to distinguish between the 4. In the same way, we don't notice nearly as many accents from those in the US as they would, I can think of about 4-5, but I have no doubt there are a 100 or even 1000 times that.
I couldn't tell any difference between Australian accents, though there are likely to be there too. Did you know that even animals have an accent? I'm sure I read that dogs bark in a similar manner to those in a similar group. Can't remember where I read that, I hope it wasn't in the Daily Mail... WormTT(talk) 22:34, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
I did read something similar about birds chirping differently in cities from in the wild...something to do with city birds being confused with car alarms and sirens and sounding differently, or something along those lines.
I'm not sure i spend long enough near Dudley to recognise their accent outright though Jenova20 22:43, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
(ec) Why can't the English learn to speak? (grin) - jc37 22:44, 29 May 2012 (UTC)
(incidentally - Rex Harrison, who sang that while portraying Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady, also portrayed the lead in Doctor Doolittle : ) - jc37
If I walked down a line of Brits, I feel that I would be able to tell a fair number of accents apart, just not by name. I used to act, and while I wasn't good at accents, I'm relatively good at noticing them. Still, I wouldn't get them all. Jenova is correct that I combine too many though. I don't know the regions of Great Britain, so even though I can hear the difference between accents, I can't label them. Personally, I'd split the "British" accents into Cockney and everything that isn't cockney. Then the rest of the UK is Scottish and Irish, and I supposed Wales would have an accent too. Maybe I'll do some research now, I'm sure Birmingham would have its own accent...and I see that Worm just mentioned that above...and much more. As a side note, you might check this YouTube video I watched it a while ago and thought the guy was pretty good. Ryan Vesey Review me! 05:40, 30 May 2012 (UTC)
Speaking of My Fair Lady, I've always wondered if it was true that Brits could tell each other's accent down to a few city blocks in the past, as Higgins says. Personally, I'm just happy that I can tell a few of the Commonwealth accents apart (Brit, Aussie, etc.). Of course, on the other side of the coin I distinctly remember a British friend of mine who claimed that the Boston accent and a hard Louisiana were the same. (shakes head) Nolelover Talk·Contribs 20:24, 2 June 2012 (UTC)

Not to eavesdrop, but thought I'd offer my two cents, or pence: I've got a Brit friend who talks about identifying accents not just regionally but by school. That is, particular subtleties, cadence, nuance and liaison by which he can name the college, or whatever Brits call their finishing schools. Sebastian Lake (talk) 00:36, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Ryan, I'm looking for info on how to create redirects. Not sure if that's what Wikipedia calls them, but here's what I'm looking to do. Now, in order to find the new entry, you must enter exactly: Sweet Revenge (Liqueur). I'd like to be able to have folks find the entry, when normal or intuitive words are entered in Search. Ryan, I found BIg Wind's advice about "neutralized" writing, and his personal feelings about the topics in the draft Wiki post on Sweet Revenge Liqueur. I'll look forward to hearing specific disclosures about the critique. I don't know how to address it. Do you have any idea how he is aligned with either Southern Comfort or Domaine de Canton, the two liquor brand Wikipedia entries that Big Wind finds acceptably well-neutralized? And, is Big Wind a qualified critic of advertisement copy writing? How can I learn more about BIg Wind's qualifications? Sebastian Lake (talk) 05:49, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

I have given you advice, but I am not happy with the rather hostile reception of that. Just take or leave it. If you don't want my advice, that is okay but please tell me. Night of the Big Wind talk 10:40, 5 June 2012 (UTC)

Thanks, Big Wind. I'm sorry that you read my messages as hostile. It is not intended to be hostile. It is meant to clarify the difference between your opinions about writing, and your expertise in gaming the Wikipedia system. That's what I need your help with, as I am new, and it is not intuitive for a "right brainer.

Please see below, and please review the current version of the entry. It now reflects all of your comments, change requests and recommendations. Additionally I need help with sizing the images that I have uploaded. I included the images you recommended, to mirror the style of the Southern Comfort entry that you said you like.

Finally, before this slips through the cracks, can you please disclose if you have any conflict of interest or relationship to the brands, the two entries you recommended, and did you have anything to do with the content in these entries? Many thanks. I would like to discuss them further, with you, and seek your advice going forward, as this is a category that is currently weakly covered in Wikipedia. I am focused on the needs of the reader/viewer, and frankly am much less concerned with the internal nuances of Wikipedia. I want to get stuff done, and if you can help, great.

I posted this message for Ryan:

Ryan, I have edited the Sweet Revenge piece to reflect all of the comments, criticisms etc, from you and Big Wind. Additionally, I uploaded two jogs to illustrate the piece, as recommend by Big Wind -- like the Southern Comfort entry. However, I do not know how to adjust the size of the images, to modify them to fit the page. 1) Can you and Big Wind please "sign off" on the editorial changes that you recommended and that I have now made. 2) Can you and Big Wind please adjust the sizes and placement of the photos accordingly, to match the style of the entries that Big Wind likes? Thank you kindly in advance.

Thanks again, Big Wind

Ryan, this is both a question and a response/comment to one of your edits. So, when you make a change, I receive a gmail message containing a Wikipedia link. When I click the link, a two-column page displays, to show me the change you have made, and your comment as to why you've made the change. If I would like to comment there, to explain or respond to you at "the scene of the change", how do I do that? Because I don't know, I end up making a note like this, and hope that you'll find it and connect it to the change you made.
And to that end, this message is in response to your change in which you deleted the reference to a trade publication, in which you said you couldn't find an article about Sweet Revenge. In the spirits world, that trade publication (such as it is) is composed primarily of advertisements. It is one of the venues where distillers post ads that essentially announce the arrival of a new product in the marketplace. The Sweet Revenge trade announcement page is there, you may have overlooked it. I included that reference originally as a footnote to the text that claims the product entered the marketplace early in 2012. I was not citing it as an example of superb, objective journalism. It was simply included as evidence that the product exists and was being promoted by early 2012. Would I fight to include this reference from a trade publication full of advertorial? No. Only as establishing evidence, and I will respect your advice as to whether this is meaningful in the context of Wikipedia.

Vincent Price? Who?

Hi there Ryan. Got the call for help on me talk page - so replying here for your attention!

I'm not surprised that you are having trouble tracking this guy and finding sources. He's a clever chap who tells other people about their opinions, but seems to fly under the radar when it comes to opinions about him. There is big money in his work - especially when it comes to politics.

But - after a quick and dirty search -

  1. Link He is published and read Widely
  2. I think that this may be "Very Interesting" - a must read - Link - given his writings and publications. P^)
  3. Link - about his work - "usefully describes four models of the public sphere that could potentially apply to the U.S. at various points in the debate over financial reform and other issues: ..."
  4. Link interesting book review 1992 (Snippet) bottom of the page - could do with being read in full, but enough to quote as is. Indispensable - Insightful - full review is worth reading if you can get a copy.
  5. Link4 - 2007 and his work has been published in five languages. He has been an advisor to the Canadian Election Study, and currently serves on advisory boards for the National Annenberg Election Survey and the American National Election Studies.
  6. Link read page 26 - ref/quote 6 is him.
  7. Link "His book, Public Opinion, has been translated and published in five languages. His current research focuses on the role of online political conversation and deliberation in shaping public opinion and is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Pew Charitable Trusts, and the Annenberg Public Policy Center..." - again possible more digging for related sources.

... and he keeps cropping up in Google scholar - and his work keeps featuring in books on politics, public opinion, media, opinion making. http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&q=Vincent+Price - and he addresses all sorts such as

  • "libel and juries" - I bet the legal eagles and lawyers love him for that one!
  • "how journalistic story frames can affect the thoughts and feelings of readers." - how to twist media to meet your own bias - a must read for all media moguls.
  • "Does Disagreement Contribute to More Deliberative Opinion?" ... and the answer to that one is YES!

His work is very wide ranging and seen as influential in many fields.

His work and theories are linked to Gallup Poll repeatedly - and his work is seen as an extension of Gallup http://ijpor.oxfordjournals.org/content/14/2/202.extract - and that progression and linkage could do with being explored.

It would appear that the best way to filter out "Vincent price" actor is by keyword searching so " "Vincent price"+election(s)" or ""Vincent price"+communication(s)" or ""Vincent price"+"public opinion"" - and also ""Vincent price"+politics"

It's hard to track him across news archives - it seems to be an odd thing, but when it comes to US elections they always seem to have a Vincent Price movie playing - Spooky! P^)

... then again I found this interview with him Link and maybe his language just doesn't play well on camera and in the media. P^) .... who uses "churn" in an interview?

Hope those help! - need more just shout! I haven't been digging that hard, or reading in detail, but I think No 1 & 2 above are real good sources that allow so much to be put in context about him - his work - 20 years - and why he is notable!

Wooh, I'm excited to get to work on this one. I want to get two pages published first and then this is the next thing on my list. The JSTOR link is great and luckily I have access to the full thing through the University of Pennsylvania. (Minor COI, but clearly disclosed on my talk page if anyone cared and I am easily capable of writing a proper article with a conflict of interest. Heck, I introduced the controversies section to University of Pennsylvania. Thanks a ton for that search :) Ryan Vesey Review me! 01:23, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
Hi there. It seems that Mr Price is a bit of a global gad fly - India any use? Only a snippet, but an interesting one from 2007 The Hindu Magazine - see last Para. Media-Hound 'D 3rd P^) (talk) 10:29, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Please do not delete my micronations page

Dear Ryan, I am the man who created the Constitutional Monarchy of Scoussia page. And I have one question. why is my page being deleted? there is nothing wrong with it, all of it is true. I swear. If you have any problems just tell me what to edit and I'll edit it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Doctorwhofan778 (talkcontribs) 02:54, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Hi Doctorwhofan778. I have nothing against you or your micronation. The problem doesn't have anything to do with the fact that I don't believe you created the micronation. The problem is that it hasn't been mentioned in reliable sources. If your micronation gets mentioned in large newspapers it may be considered for inclusion. Until then, consider continuing with your micronations.wikia page. If you would like to comment at the deletion discussion, you can do so hereRyan Vesey Review me! 03:05, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
Ryan Vesey. It just started give some time. It's not like i can currently start a website out of the blue. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Doctorwhofan778 (talkcontribs) 03:15, 7 June 2012 (UTC)
I do not have the tools required to delete it. In addition, I can't keep the article even if I wanted. The decision will be made at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The Constitutional Monarchy of Scoussia and all further comments should be made there. That being said, Wikipedia isn't the place to advertise your Micronation. You must wait for it to get wide reviews before you can add the page. Ryan Vesey Review me! 03:20, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

No problem, I certainly think it is worthy of an article, I'll check on it occassionally. Ryan Vesey Review me! 21:57, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

Unref?

Hmm. If an article's only "reference" is to a Youtube video, and Youtube is not a Reliable Source, then I'd have thought it was "Unreferenced". You disagree? PamD 21:57, 9 June 2012 (UTC)

It's a common misconception that Youtube isn't a reliable source, and I wish that would get fixed. WP:YOUTUBE, while referring to external links, specifically states that "There is no blanket ban on linking to YouTube or other user-submitted video sites". I probably should have followed the link to the video though. I didn't realize that it was only video footage, and I suppose it borders on original research; however, any other person can follow the link and verify it for themselves. Ryan Vesey Review me! 22:04, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
I started a discussion on the reliability of YouTube at Wikipedia talk:Reliable sources/Noticeboard if you care to take part. Ryan Vesey Review me! 22:38, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
In a related note User:Mishae called you and User:Stemonitis "reverting scum" and upon warning called you "fascistic" and has been unwilling to redact. I just thought I'd let you know so you could handle it as you wished. Ryan Vesey Review me! 22:08, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for both comments. On the beetle, there's nothing reliable to connect the beetle species to the video image, just one person's identification of it - surely that can't be classed as a WP:RS? On the editor's behaviour ... I wondered about going to ANI, but will wait to see how his discussion with Worm goes. His behaviour and attitudes are both pretty problematic - won't use edit summaries, edits his talk page comments without updating datestamps, doesn't think much of consensus. And isn't there a WP name for bringing Nazi Germany into any discussion... the term escapes me for the moment. Oh hell no, I'll go to ANI about the personal attacks, without bringing in all the rest of the stuff. PamD 22:44, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
No, changed my mind again. But I'll go to his talk page. PamD 22:46, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict)Touché, I didn't think of the information actually associating the beetle species to the actual beetle. I forgot which article it was, care to revert my edit? Ryan Vesey Review me! 22:47, 9 June 2012 (UTC)
The editor concerned has two bad habits about references: (a) citing unreliable sources (Flickr as wellas Youtube), and (b) giving a vague "title" for the ref but giving no indication of the source, so that in "link rot" terms they are no better, possibly even worse, than a bare URL. See this article, which also shows a lot of over-linking (eg of colour names). I looked at WP:ANI last night, read "Before posting a grievance about a user here, please discuss the issue with them on their user talk page." and decided to go to his Talk Page - thank you for taking up matters thereafter. On Youtube - it seems that the discussion has unfortunately been completely sidetracked into whether textbooks etc are reliable sources, away from the question of YouTube. Still, it might wander back to the main discussion, given time. PamD 07:04, 10 June 2012 (UTC)
Eh, I like the proposal I came up with and I think I'll make it at WP:RS. I'll send you a note if I do. It allows for YouTube when it is appropriate, but gives a clear way to remove inappropriate YouTube links. Ryan Vesey Review me! 07:09, 10 June 2012 (UTC)

Formatting

I absolutely love the way you have set up your wikipages. If I were to use some of your formatting (coding) to create divs and stuff would that be stealing? I won't use them exactly as is and will edit a bit. I love your tool bar too. GREAT job!! ȚttØØditre§ 14:44, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

Funny you should say that, a majority of my formatting was "stolen" from Worm That Turned and modified a bit. Everything is released under a free license so you are completely free to use any of it. You may be interested in looking through a little bit of the history of my userpage, specifically this version which would give you slightly more code to use if you desire. Ryan Vesey Review me! 15:17, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
THIEF!!!!!! It's not a bad idea to mention where you get it from in the edit summary, as we do require attribution (not completely free  ). I'm sure I pinched it from somewhere, but I don't remember where from... WormTT(talk) 15:24, 11 June 2012 (UTC)
Ahh you two are funny. Thanks I actually went and found some code and then realized DUH yea its free licensing.... LOL ... hey did I indent correctly?Just copying what I see above and adding one. Haa ha... just guessing. ȚttØØditre§ 03:26, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
Your indent is correct. Your indentation should always be one more than whoever you are replying to. Wikipedia:Indentation gives a little bit more information. Ryan Vesey Review me! 03:30, 12 June 2012 (UTC)
