Access dates in Template:Cite Caltrans map‎

They shouldn't be hard-coded like that. If I need to use the template to cite something, my access date for the map will be different than yours, and my citation should use the date I accessed the map. Even your dates may change as re-access or re-download the various maps over time. Unlike an archive date, which has to be fixed and is more like a publication date, an access date should always be individually specified. Imzadi 1979 → 05:02, 15 June 2015 (UTC)

I suppose, though pretty much every access date of a source shared between articles (bridge logs, traffic stats, etc.) in California is hard-coded in, even from before I started redoing the articles in 2012. --Rschen7754 05:04, 15 June 2015 (UTC)
Specifying them in the articles individually is fine, but the shouldn't be hard-coded into the new special templates. The access date on a footnote is a notation that either or both of 1) the content was verified to that source on that date or 2) the citation was added near that date. If I'm expanding an article and citing a Caltrans map next month, the access date on that citation should bear next month's date. Sometimes it's appropriate to back date the citations if the editor actually downloaded a copy of the source; in that case I'd say that editor should use the download date since it's like an archive date in that sense. But otherwise, the access date should always be the date that the editor accessed the source to verify the information he or she added to the article, not a default for the source. I'm not familiar with all the procedures on this, but since you took care of Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/DegenFarang, I wanted to point out that User:Handpolk is 99% likely to be another sockpuppet of DegenFarang (no other person on Earth loves the word "peacock" as much as this guy. The articles edited, the tone, the scorched Earth style, the lies about agreement, the obtuse warnings on talk pages, and the inability to civily interact with any other editor ever make it clear. Hopefully he isn't disguising his IP somehow, but it is plainly obvious the same person. 2005 (talk) 03:36, 4 July 2015 (UTC)

I was just trying to figure out how to do that. I did want to post here also because if you had any memory of DegenFarang (including the threats against various editors) perhaps you would easily recognize Handpolk as a sockpuppet and at least put a temporary block on his account to prevent him from making any more messes before the sock investigation could take place. I handled a few hundred cases in my time at SPI, and that case was over two years ago, sunfortunately I don't remember. It's usually best to do these things at SPI anyway, so that things are better documented if he comes back again, or if CheckUser is required. --Rschen7754 03:54, 4 July 2015 (UTC)
Can you counsel me how to handle this editor spreading baseless allegations about me in numerous venues? If they'd like to go to SPI that's fine but they should not be permitted to make this attack across numerous pages where we disagree on content, in an attempt to discredit me and ignore my argumrnts.   • There was a problem with some Lua modules on July 22 and 23. Some pages using them did not list them in "what links here". You can fix those pages with a null edit: edit and save the page without making any change.
  • There was a problem with the abuse filter page on big wikis on July 23. It was due to a code error. [72]

  • The ContentTranslation extension has been updated:
    • You can now type in list paragraphs on wikis with right-to-left scripts. [74]

  • The error page you see when the sites are not working is now simpler and easier to read. It also shows the Wikimedia logo. [79]
  • MediaWiki now supports redirects for CSS pages. [80]
  • Bots can't guess captchas unlimited times anymore. [81]

  • There was a problem with thumbnails on wikis with local images on July 24 and 25. It was due to a code error. [82]

Recent changes

  • MediaWiki can now hide the signature button when you edit a content page. [84]
  • The "Your preferences have been saved" message has changed. You can now see more easily what was saved when you change preferences several times. [85]
  • You can now play Ogg video files in some browsers that don't support this format. This solution uses JavaScript and works on desktop browsers only for now. It will work on mobile later. [86]
  • You can now use the same tools to edit style in VisualEditor on mobile as in desktop browsers. [87]
  • It is now easier to see if there is a JavaScript error in a user or site script. [88]
  • JavaScript authors:
    • You can no longer use the Sajax library. You can see a list of pages to fix. [89] [90]
    • You can no longer use document.write on Wikimedia wikis. You can see a list of pages to fix. [91] [92]
  • The content translation tool now works better. It is easier to use math, and useless tags are no longer added. [93]

Problems

  • More edits have been rejected due to loss of session data lately. This is now fixed. [94]
  • Importing a Lua module sometimes didn't work. This is now fixed. [95]
  • Text was sometimes lost in the content translation tool. One part of the problem is now fixed. [96]

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from August 11. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from August 12. It will be on all Wikipedias from August 13 (calendar).
  • UploadWizard is getting a new look. The look of buttons and checkboxes has already changed. This week, UploadWizard gets a new date picker. The other text fields will change soon. [97]

  • Many Wikipedias can now use information from any Wikidata item in any Wikipedia article. Before they could only use the Wikidata item that matched the subject of the article. [100] [101] [102]
  • Some auto-saving problems and other issues in the Content Translation tool are now fixed. Please report to the Content Translation feedback page if you still have problems. [103]

Problems

  • Older gadgets that are not using ResourceLoader are not loading anymore. They need to be updated. [104] [105]
  • On August 12 the machine translation servers and the Content Translation tool didn't work. This was fixed on the same day. [106]

  • You can now mention up to 50 users in a post and they will get a notification. Previously you could notify up to 20 users. [116]
  • A new version of the Wikidata Toolkit has been released. It now has Wikibase API support. [117]
  • You can now use Wikidata to find all good or featured articles in a Wikipedia version. [118]

Problems

  • There was a problem with Tool Labs due to kernel issues. This has been fixed. [119]
  • The Content Translation tool published some pages with the same reference repeated several times. This has been fixed. [120][121]

  • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from September 8. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis from September 9. It will be on all Wikipedias from September 10 (calendar).
  • The maximum character length when you search for something on the Wikimedia wikis is now 300 characters. [122]

Invitation to subscribe to the edit filter mailing list

Hi, as a user in the edit filter manager user group we wanted to let you know about the new wikipedia-en-editfilters mailing list. As part of our recent efforts to improve the use of edit filters on the English Wikipedia it has been established as a venue for internal discussion by edit filter managers regarding private filters (those only viewable by administrators and edit filter managers) and also as a means by which non-admins can ask questions about hidden filters that wouldn't be appropriate to discuss on-wiki. As an edit filter manager we encourage you to subscribe; the more users we have in the mailing list the more useful it will be to the community. If you subscribe we will send a short email to you through Wikipedia to confirm your subscription, but let us know if you'd prefer another method of verification. I'd also like to take the opportunity to invite you to contribute to the proposed guideline for edit filter use at WP:Edit filter/Draft and the associated talk page. Thank you!
