No, sirree, sir, by no means am I back, sir! Though I did flee London for Denmark with the winter storm nipping at my heels (your poor parents!) The crowning glory of a week in Copenhagen was the Royal Danish Ballet's double bill, Bournonville and Balanchine. The former represented by Sylfiden, Mr. B. by Symphony in C, a brilliant pairing given the Scottish dance in the fourth movement of the latter. In London I got to the theatre ten times in six days, including the Bourne Swan Lake and both the ENB and Royal Ballet Nutcrackers. I'm in Stockholm the next three weeks, and the Royal Swedish Ballet have one Nutcracker left in their schedule. They change the libretto a bit to align it with some well-known Swedish children's literature, And they dancing a lovely Coppélia. Outside of which there are over a dozen plays up at the two major institutional theatres. Back in London I spent three days at the National Theatre, two shows a day. I also saw femme fatale Camille O'Sullivan on New Year's Eve; Édith Piaf and Janis Joplin in equal measure! Nobel Prize

Hello! I am currently working on the "Swedish Project" and "Award and Prizes"'s article Nobel Prize. Since it is a top importance article and not even GA class I am trying to make it a GA article and perhaps further after that. However, I'm in a state now where I could use some help. I need a new pair (several pairs in fact) of eyes to look at the article and the talk page for improving prose, debation of different things and some sourcing. Hello. I am contacting you because you are listed as a participant for WikiProject Norway, and the above-mentioned article is sourced by all Norwegian-language references. Moreover, the references do not appear to support notability; they might be mere trivial references to the subject. Since these sources are all offline, and I do not speak or read Norwegian, I'm hoping whether you can assist me in determining whether the article qualifies for speedy deletion. I don't usually get involved in issues of speedy deletion or notability, but Einar Lindboe has a goodly article on the Norwegian Wiki. and a stub on this, the English. The editors of the latter are not the same as those who created Medicinernes Skiklub Svartor, and most of those who worked on the latter appear to be "real" editors. I do not have a bias against offline sources — if anything I'm biased against Internet materials — but a Google search supports the legitimacy of three of the article's four refs. The last (the medical article) is available online, and I've added the link. That still leaves the question of notability: my feeling is that this is no less notable than half of what is on Wikipedia. Then again, many Wikipedians would question the notability of most of what I write about, hence my reluctance to get involved in speedies. I sincerely thank you for asking; you Wiki. admins. have a thankless task, and you in particular seem to be treating it with all seriousness. Merging dance lists?

Tags have appeared in List of dance companies, List of modern dance companies, List of contemporary dance companies suggesting a merger, but pointing to the current individual discussion pages. Where is this being discussed? (I'd be in favour of moving everything to the List of dance companies, and can offer to do that if you wish - I've recently been doing some tidying up there...) All that needs to be done after you've done the heavy lifting is to replace the content of the List of modern dance companies and List of contemporary dance companies with:

Frigate categories

Hi Robert, a while ago you created some new categories for Royal Navy frigates. After some discussion I think we agreed that they were a mistake, owing to the confused nature of the difference between 'rates' and 'classes', and how they were implemented during the different periods of the Navy's history. With this in mind, I wonder if you would mind tagging them for deletion under {{db-self}}? They were the categories Category:First-rate Frigates of the Royal Navy, Category:Second-rate Frigates of the Royal Navy, etc, by the way. Best, Benea (talk) 16:55, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

{{WikiProject Ballet}} being placed on pages with {{WikiProject Dance}} template

Hi Robert, I just looked at Talk:Tracy Li and noted you had added {{WikiProject Ballet}} template - there is already {{WikiProject Dance}}template on that page. (The Ballet template is a duplicate of the dance template.) The class and importance assessments are different which brought it to my notice. Paul foord (talk) 15:04, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Dear Paul, there's method to my madness (I hope!) I'd like the two eventually to point to the Dance Portal and Ballet Portal respectively (and perhaps have seperate To Do lists, etc.) In the short run I set up Template:WikiProject Ballet as a copy of Template:WikiProject Dance with Ballet=yes added. It tried instead to set it up as a redirect to the latter but don't nkow how to force the Ballet=yes parameter. I did create two pairs of lazy bones' templates, Template:WP Ballet and Template:WPBallet. as well as Template:WP Dance and Template:WPDance, that redirect to Template:WikiProject Ballet and Template:WikiProject Dance respectively, though I don't use them myself. So rather than place the {{WikiProject Dance|Ballet=yes|nested=yes}} template on a talk page and later have to go back and change it to {{WikiProject Ballet|nested=yes}} I've been using the provisional version of the latter. In the long run what I'd like to do is allow Portal= and ToDo= parameters in a yet to be developed template {{WikiProject Dance2}} to which {{WikiProject Dance}} and {{WikiProject Ballet|}} could then speak as follows;

{{WikiProject Dance2|ToDo=Dance|Portal=Dance}}

and:

{{WikiProject Dance2|ToDo=Ballet|Portal=Ballet|Ballet=yes}}

But I'm not yet expert enought in template programming to do so. The Ballet Portal side of this seems the more important as people are beginning to write there. But the ballet and non-ballet dance communities are as seperate on Wikipedia as in the real world! Anne Benna Sims was dancing with the company at least from 1979 to 1981 (her name appears in NY Times reviews during those years.) So Kimball may have been the second African-American ABT soloist and not the first; she was first mentioned in the Times review of Netherlands Dance Theatre in 1982 and in reviews of ABT from 1985. — Robert Greer 13:16, 23 March 2010 (UTC)

Prima Ballerina and Prima Ballerina Assoluta vs. Principal Guest Artist

Here in the US a principal guest artist is not necessarily ranked higher than a principal dancer; it may just be a contractual matter.

A guest artist is not technically a full-time member (i.e. employee) of the company and does not necessarily receive benefits such as workmen's comp.

Some listed as principal dancers may in fact be guest artists who for their own or the company's reasons do not want the fact made more widely known.

Typically, of course, they are stars dancing for more than one major company, including possibly their own.

Another is the case of a principal dancer in one company who wants to move to another which does not yet have a line open for a principal or lacks permanent funding for another line.

The dancer might be brought in as a principal guest artist until the line opens up or funding is found (these are not hypothetical examples.) — Robert Greer 12:48, 27 April 2010 (UTC)

A request

I'm writing to three of you, selected from the list of members of the WikiProject Theatre

I'm fairly active at Requests for feedback, where brand-new editors often submit their first drafts of an article. We struggle to keep up with the requests, but our advice is usually rather basic - explain how to do references, and why their subject matter isn't notable. Every once in a while, we get someone who wants a quality assessment of an article. Frankly, that isn't something the regular participants tat that forum are equipped to do, plus most assessments, as I understand it, are done by Wikiprojects.

My request is two-fold, first, would one of you undertake an assessment of Charles Deburau (or help identify someone who can do such an assessment)?

Second, my impression is that the new editor user:Beebuk, is doing outstanding work, so I want to make you aware of his contributions, as the Wikiproject is in a far better position to nurture someone who I view as a positive contributor to the project. His current interests are rather specific, as you can see from his contributions, and while I can provide advice about Wikipedia related issues, it would be nice if someone more conversant with the subject matter could provide more insightful comments. I added a few suggestions at Requests for feedback ... RAD Ballet Technique

Can I ask you to comment on the discussion on Talk:Royal Academy of Dance. I don't understand why this person seems adamant that the RAD article does not belong in the dance technique category. My personal view is that they are placing to narrow a definition on the term dance technique, or maybe it's me that is looking at it wrong. Either way have a read and give your thoughts. He is a dance photographer who shoots acro and competitive dance and then assumes that he knows more about ballet than you (click on those links and you'll understand what you're dealing with.) It can't be any worse than was the Ondine fracas. — Robert Greer 02:51, 16 July 2010 (UTC)

Suggestions

Of course, if you're like me and enjoy giving yourself the creeps, you'll do what I once did in London. Get yourself a guidebook about the Jack the Ripper murders, wait until evening and then 'follow his footsteps'. Many of the murder locations are still accessible and it makes for quite a fascinating tour of East London. There are many organised tours as well!

I've also been on a 'pilgrim's' tour to see the homes of Ninette de Valois, Anna Pavlova and others, if that would interest you.

  • Priscilla the Musical, the best show in London and you won't be seeing it on BW any time soon
  • Legally Blonde, it's a BW show, but here one of my best friends is playing the lead
  • Menier Chocolate Factory, small producing theatre, has created some of the West Ends biggest hits in recent years (including Tony award winning BW transfers)

  • Love Never Dies, has had some negative press, but there's nothing like seeing some Andrew Lloyd Webber in its native setting here in the West End
  • Oliver, a Dickensian classic and one of the best loved musicals amongst Brits, but for some unknown reason has never really gone down well on BW

  • London Coliseum The best dance stage in London will be showing a special show by Carlos Acosta with quest star Zenaida Yanowsky, one of the Royal Ballet's most exquisite principals. Then of course you must see English National Ballet doing Michael Corder's Larry Award winning Cinderella. No they're not the Royal Ballet, but they are a cracking good company and in my personal opinion, far more entertaining and worth double the money of a ticket to the ROH.
  • Royal Opera House The second best dance stage in London is playing host to the Bolshoi Ballet and opera whilst the Royal Ballet are off on their summer tour. No explanation required as to why this is a must see.

Pointe shoes

Regarding your thanks for my removal of the nonsense about only beginners using elastic: you're welcome! My daughter has danced for many years too, and although she has studied acro, jazz, tap, and many other genres over the years, her true love is ballet. She has focused on ballet from the beginning and has been to intensives at SAB, SFB and elsewhere (including RAD, btw). I may not be an expert but I know a thing or two about ballet, and I know nonsense when I see it. If your daughter's been to RAD, SFB and SAB intensives you certainly qualify as an expert! The wearing or not wearing of elastics is a small point but is the sort of thing that deserves mention in passing on Wikipedia. It is, alas, just the sort of thing that some ignoramus will challenge on the wrong-minded grounds that it's original research. In other words, if you can't find it with a Google search it must be original research. I don't know which is worse, the boys who vandalize pages or the adults who think they know more than they do. In some ways the former are the lesser of two evils; you just undo their edits and that's that. The latter will engage you in long discussions about the number of angels that can dance on the head of a pin. Keep up the good work! — Robert Greer 09:38, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Rødkilde Højskole

Hi Robertgreer. Thanks for your interest in this article. I see you speak Swedish fairly fluently and also get by in the other Scandinavian languages. Good to know you are around. I don't agree with the change in title though. First of all, it's all about Rødkilde Højskole, not about the Teaterskole which is a recent development. In Denmark, everyone still refers to it as Rødkilde Højskole anyway. In fact I did not discover it had recently been renamed until I started to look into it more closely. The other unfortunate thing is that you changed the title just before it was listed as Rødkilde Højskole on yesterday's DYK section of the main page - so of course it got no hits. Perhaps you would be kind enough to restore the old title, leaving the redirects from Teaterskole Rødkilde and Teaterhøjskole Rødkilde. Thanks. - Ipigott (talk) 08:31, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

Template:WikiProject Ballet and Template:WP Ballet and Template:WPBallet redirects

I hope to explain my recent change to Template:WikiProject Ballet (redirecting it to Template:WikiProject Ballet 2) and perhaps to recruit your help!

I would modify Template:WikiProject Dance to accomplish what follows if I knew more about coding Wiki templates — but I don't — and had intended later this evening to leave a note for Paul foord, who has done far more template coding than I have and with whom I discussed the matter some time ago.

The main differences between Template:WikiProject Ballet 2 and Template:WikiProject Dance, from which it is directly derived, are two:

  1. WikiProject Ballet To-do list rather than WikiProject Dance To-do list
  2. Ballet Portal rather than Dance Portal

I think the necessary changes (insertions) to Template:WikiProject Dance would go somewhere in the following lines:

The final goal would be to have the former read very simply, {{WikiProject Dance|ballet=yes}}. Dorothy Tutin and P.A.R.A.D.A.

I have just seen your query. I was equally puzzled by the term P.A.R.A.D.A which made its appearance with her very first biographical entry for Who's Who in the Theatre, Twelfth Edition published by PItman in 1957 (before the days of ISBNs). Since it appeared again in the Thirteenth Edition clearly this is not a misprint! So I just transcribed the entry and let it go. Given that it also contains the letters RADA, one must presume that PARADA was some sort of pre-entry for the main event, rather like the 'schools' element of Arts Educational in Chiswick. Your reversion of my edit to Octet (Martins)

Thanks for your concern regarding my edits to the page. I'm afraid I cannot agree that a disambiguating hatnote should exist on this page. The guidelines are clear and specific on this issue; WP:DLINKS says in part: "There is no need to add disambiguation links to a page whose name already clearly distinguishes itself from the generic term" and WP:NAMB further amplifies this point. The article names Octet (Martins) and Octet (Christensen) cannot be confused as the parenthetical disambiguators refer to the writers' surnames, which are clearly distinct and distinguish the ballets one from the other. As discussed in the above pages, it may be appropriate to add the similarly-named ballets to a "see also" section at the end of the article.

I hope this clarifies the issue and you now agree that the hatnotes need to be removed to comply with Wikipedia's hatnote guidelines. Thank you. --MegaSloth (talk) 23:33, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi. I don't understand why you have tagged a redirect to the cricket project and used class=redirect. This seems unconventional as we generally do not put project tags on redirected articles' talk pages while the class parameter is used to show the article's quality as FA, GA, A, B, C, start, stub. The other projects on which I edit do so to be able to find redirects to the pages their project watches without application of "What links here" to every article in the project (and even so the occasional redirect may be missed if a page has been moved carelessly.)

Links on La valse

Hi Robert, I've removed the links you added to La valse, because they are not directly related to the subject of the article, per the external links guidelines. Also regarding the formatting with the column breaks, it may look good but it sounds horrendous with a screen reader because the column markup breaks up the HTML list. With the column breaks on your external links, I hear "list of 1 items, link, list of 1 items, link, list of 1 items, link ...", whereas without them I would hear "list of 6 items, link, link, link ...".
