Let me dig a little. I notice that the article on the 1969-70 rugby tour claims that it "owned" the Stop the 70 tour! title. I've at least one book which covers this in depth, as well as bits and pieces in the book on D'Olly, and in Gubby Allen's biography. I'll see what I can find, and let you know. My wife thinks so too so I can hardly call this point impertinent. I quite like the contrast between the two pictures myself. My wife does however prefer me with a beard, and was somewhat miffed when I shaved for the wedding (I pointed out that these pictures are forever and she grudgingly yet gracefully acquiesced). Married life is going very well so far. As you may have understood from previous correspondence Dalia does not know English that well and so has yet to read any of my articles. She drew a rather wry but endearing picture of me at my desk, apparently typing furiously while repeating the words "Rhodesia, Rhodesia, Rhodesia ..." WikiCup 2014 March newsletter

A quick update as we are half way through round two of this year's competition. WikiCup newcomer Godot13 (submissions) (Pool E) leads, having produced a massive set of featured pictures for Silver certificate (United States), an article also brought to featured list status. Former finalist Adam Cuerden (submissions) (Pool G) is in second, which he owes mostly to his work with historical images, including a number of images from Urania's Mirror, an article also brought to good status. 2010 champion (Pool C) is third overall, thanks to contributions relating to naval history, including the newly featured Japanese battleship Nagato. Cliftonian (submissions), who currently leads Pool A and is sixth overall, takes the title for the highest scoring individual article of the competition so far, with the top importance featured article Ian Smith.

With 26 people having already scored over 100 points, it is likely that well over 100 points will be needed to secure a place in round 3. Recent years have required 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) and 100 (2010). Remember that only 64 will progress to round 3 at the end of April. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page; if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points equally. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Chilembwe uprising

Dear Cliftonian,

I just wondered if perhaps you might possibly be able to do the GAR for the 1915 Chilembwe uprising if you have the time? I hesitated to ask you initially, since you were already good enough to review the Belgian Congo in World War II for me, but there seems to be a problem with African history articles in general in finding reviewers so I'm afraid I have to ask you again! For an experimental period, nominators no longer have to worry about calculating how many "points" the article has. Dickie Bird

I have to confess, I'm not a huge fan of Mr Bird, but he would be a good article to work on. I don't have any sources on him except two histories of Yorkshire CCC and, of course, numerous Wisdens. I could easily dig out other stuff though, but you might have to do most of the heavy lifting if you have the book. I'm currently bogged down horribly with Bob Wyatt, and something lighter might be good. Particularly as the only other thing I have on the boil is Gubby Allen, who we met, unpleasantly, in D'Olly. WikiCup 2014 April newsletter

Round 3 of the 2014 WikiCup has just begun; 32 competitors remain. Pool G's Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Round 2's highest scorer, with a large number of featured picture credits. In March/April, he restored star charts from Urania's Mirror, lithographs of various warships (such as SMS Gefion) and assorted other historical media. Second overall was Pool E's Godot13 (submissions), whose featured list Silver certificate (United States) contains dozens of scans of banknotes recently promoted to featured picture status. Third was Pool G's ChrisGualtieri (submissions) who has produced a large number of good articles, many, including Falkner Island, on Connecticut-related topics. Other successful participants included Cliftonian (submissions), who saw three articles (including the top-importance Ian Smith) through featured article candidacies, and Caponer (submissions), who saw three lists (including the beautifully-illustrated list of plantations in West Virginia) through featured list candidacies. High-importance good articles promoted this round include narwhal from Reid,iain james (submissions), tiger from Cwmhiraeth (submissions) and The Lion King from Igordebraga (submissions). We also saw our first featured topic points of the competition, awarded to Czar (submissions) and Red Phoenix (submissions) for their work on the Sega Genesis topic. No points have been claimed so far for good topics or featured portals.

192 was our lowest qualifying score, again showing that this WikiCup is the most competitive ever. In previous years, 123 (2013), 65 (2012), 41 (2011) or 100 (2010) secured a place in Round 3. Pool H was the strongest performer, with all but one of its members advancing, while only the two highest scorers in Pools G and F advanced. At the end of June, 16 users will advance into the semi-finals. WikiCup 2014 June newsletter

After an extremely close race, Round 3 is over. 244 points secured a place in Round 4, which is comparable to previous years- 321 was required in 2013, while 243 points were needed in 2012. Pool C's Godot13 (submissions) was the round's highest scorer, mostly due to a 32 featured pictures, including both scans and photographs. Also from Pool C, Casliber (submissions) finished second overall, claiming three featured articles, including the high-importance Grus (constellation). Third place was Pool B's , whose contributions included featured articles Russian battleship Poltava (1894) and Russian battleship Peresvet. Pool C saw the highest number of participants advance, with six out of eight making it to the next round.

The round saw this year's first featured portal, with Sven Manguard (submissions) taking Portal:Literature to featured status. The round also saw the first good topic points, thanks to 12george1 (submissions) and the 2013 Atlantic hurricane season. This means that all content types have been claimed this year. Other contributions of note this round include a featured topic on Maya Angelou's autobiographies from Figureskatingfan (submissions), a good article on the noted Czech footballer Tomáš Rosický from Cloudz679 (submissions) and a now-featured video game screenshot, freely released due to the efforts of Sven Manguard (submissions).

The judges would like to remind participants to update submission pages promptly. This means that content can be checked, and allows those following the competition (including those participating) to keep track of scores effectively. This round has seen discussion about various aspects of the WikiCup's rules and procedures. Those interested in the competition can be assured that formal discussions about how next year's competition will work will be opened shortly, and all are welcome to voice their views then. Congo Crisis GAN

Hi Cliftonian,

I hope all's well with you. I've just re-written Congo Crisis (which has taken ages, but I hope the result is much better than before) and wondered if you might consider doing the GAN? It's an interesting topic and fairly important for African military articles in general. Anyway, if you could find the time, I would be really grateful indeed! Thanks for the very much appreciated note Tim. Don't worry, I'm okay! As is Mrs John (who is seven months pregnant!). Not fun having to worry about her every time there are sirens but she grew up here so running down to a shelter doesn't seem to bother her too much. Baby will be a boy. Rhodesia

Hi John,

I just saw your comment above. Congratulations on the upcoming expansion to your family! I hope you will enjoy being a father. I stopped by to ask for your thoughts on some Rhodesia-related articles. I noticed that you got Public holidays in Rhodesia up to featured status a couple of years ago, and thought that I would nominate it to go up on the main page at some point. Then I noticed that the Rhodesia article is linked in the lead and that article is specifically about the Republic of Rhodesia, while the Public holidays in Rhodesia article is about Rhodesia in the broader sense, historically starting with the founding of North-Western Rhodesia and leading right up until the third iteration of Southern Rhodesia became Zimbabwe. How would you feel about moving Rhodesia (name) to Rhodesia (region) and linking that article instead of the article about the Republic of Rhodesia?

Hi David, how are you? Thanks! I will do my best. On Rhodesia—I think your suggestion of moving Rhodesia (name) to Rhodesia (region) is a good idea as the article is not so much about the name as about the area that name referred to. Once that is done I see no reason why the link in the holidays article can't be changed. Thanks for asking me about this. What kind of date were you thinking about putting it up on the main page? Anything in particular or just whenever? It would probably be best to make it coincide with one of the holidays mentioned, I think. —Cliftonian (talk) 12:54, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Life is going well on my front. I've been working on another master's degree this year, and it's prevented me from having the time to do the kind of content-based editing I normally like to do, but I hope to have time to start submitting FA nominations again soon. I'm glad you like my move suggestion; it is good to have your support for it, considering that you know more about the subject than I do. I can go undertake that now. As for the TFL suggestion, I can recommend that it be scheduled for October 20th to correspond with Republic Day. How does that sound? Neelix (talk) 15:02, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

I know what you mean. I entered the WikiCup for the first time this year and I was doing quite well until the third round (I think it was the third?) when I didn't have much time or energy to devote to it and I just kind of fizzled out. I hope to be back to at least semi-regular output before too long, but what with the baby coming we'll have to see how things go! I have tidied up the articles a bit to make clearer the correct situation, I hope it's clearer now. I think Republic Day is a good idea, but I can't help thinking Rhodes and Founders or Pioneers' Day might be better. They were both more exclusively Rhodesian in character and more long-standing than Republic Day. I know we'd have to wait a year for Rhodes and Founders, so perhaps Pioneers' Day might be better if you want to do it quicker? It's also worth remembering that the picture we have at the top of the article illustrates Pioneers' Day. —Cliftonian (talk) 16:52, 30 July 2014 (UTC)
