ani discussion

Hi, as you asked, "seriously?" to this comment I made at ANI I thought I should comment here .. "admins should not have to reverse another admins poor unsupported block, the admin that makes them should unblock the person they blocked and then block themselves for the same time period" ... it's not completely a factually serious position, more at the extreme end of the possible responses to consider if an administrator makes such a block that is quickly reverted and causes a fair bit of disruption - more than the original actual issue, especially more worthy of consideration if the admin has recently been involved in a similar overturning instance for a related reason, which in this case there was another in Dec 2010. My intention was only to ask administrators to carefully consider blocking in such possibly disputed situations for such disputable reasons, and perhaps to say to themselves, am I so right to restrict this long term, high profile contributor for this action that if I am unsupported at ANI by the community and my block is reverted or there is consensus that I am requested to revert it, am I prepared to take that poor action on to my own shoulders and do it to myself? Such considerations would be a good thing, imo that block was outside of policy and a repeat of a similar recent action that was reverted, a hat trick of such situations will clearly result in a likely well supported recall. Hmm.. I think it's got too many images and external links and not enough actual content. You mention you've rewritten it in dewiki? Maybe you or someone else can translate and bring that version over? Try making up a draft in your userpage and posting a message with a link to it on the article's talk page. Help/Advice/Guidance?

Hi... I found your name on a block of User:TheArticleWizardsApprentice. I noted that this was a sockpuppet of User:SirEpicBob. Something odd happened this morning and I'm not sure where or whether it needs to be reported. I've been working on an article on Clarkson, Ohio (See here). As I felt it was ready to move, I went to create the page and found that it had been created moments before (with all of the content that I had created - though I'm not claiming ownership). I was also surprised to see that the creator of the article had created a username (Wikiapelli) this morning that was extremely similar to my own (Wikipelli). I checked this user's contrib and discovered some edits that lead me to the blocked page of User:TheArticleWizardsApprentice, particularly here

I'd like to know if you think this is the work of a sockpuppet, an interesting coincidence, or what? I've done quite a lot of vandalism editing over the past year but I haven't come up against anything like this before. I'd appreciate your thoughts as a sysop. Thanks for your time! Dow Jones External Link Removed?

Hello, just want to know exactly why this link was removed? I understand that the these links are followed by search engines, and the site is not selling anything in particular. Jobs are listed here, but I feel that it is a valid piece of information to someone who is looking into the company. I see that the Yahoo Finance stock ticker link is included in External Links. How is this not a promotional link then? You don't need to be an admin to initiate a deletion discussion at WP:AfD, you're prefectly free to nominate it at AfD, and the WP:TWINKLE userscript makes this process automated and much easier. Oncce it's nominated, various users will discuss it and give thier thoughts on whether it should be kept or deleted, and a final deciding admin will evaluate the consensus and choose whether to delete or keep, the close the discussion. -- œ^™ 22:14, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

Vandal returns to SCAD page

Hi, the semi-protection on the Savannah College of Art and Design page expired on Feb. 20. Early this morning an anonymous user whose IP (98.82.122.140) matches the location of the earlier vandal has struck again. I've reverted the page to Feb. 20 version, but wonder what else we might be able to do to stop this person.

Question regarding Star Wars: The Old Republic

Notification: changes to "Mark my edits as minor by default" preference

Hello there. This is an automated message to tell you about the gradual phasing out of the preference entitled "Mark all edits minor by default", which you currently have (or very recently had) enabled.

On 13 March 2011, this preference was hidden from the user preferences screen as part of efforts to prevent its accidental misuse (consensus discussion, guidelines for use at WP:MINOR). This had the effect of locking users in to their existing preference, which, in your case, was true. To complete the process, your preference will automatically be changed to false in the next few days. This does not require any intervention on your part and all users will still be able to manually mark their edits as being minor in the usual way.

For well-established users such as yourself there is a workaround available involving custom JavaScript. If you have any problems, feel free to drop me a note.

Yes it seems their only intention is self-promotion. But as long as Stacy Kessler exists, they've still made a worthwhile contribution. I agree! and have been trying to draw attention to this problem for some time! The quality of South-Asian geography-related articles is atrocious, chock full of POV assertions, peacock terms, and OR, and I'm sure I don't even need to mention the spelling/grammar. And there's thousands of these articles. It's a real shame because I love reading about interesting far off places and it's so annoying when most of what I see is crap like "AKHUNKHEL IS MOST EMINENT CLAN" or whatever. Speaking of which, there's a very persistent spammer behind the 119.153.x.x range who's been spamming the same crap in dozens of articles for some time now. I've attempted communication and got nowhere. It's hard to tell whether they're intentionally being disruptive or just don't understand English well nor our policies, but it's gone past the point of assuming good faith. However, a range block seems a bit too extreme because it's such a large range. Oh well, I'll just keep them on my watchlist. -- œ^™ 21:46, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

Yep, Pakistan, India and Bangladesh are definiately the worst quality on wikipedia. Yeah the common thing is CAPITAL LETTERS, huge list of schools, massive lists of local people or clans and heavy use of the word "famous" to describe the local taxi driver or something! I'm considering making a proposal to get people tackle a category each and get the articles cleaned up and then place them on their watchlist. Pakistan has a relatively high internet usership and most of the users are not fluent. Same problem with rural India, "famous" and "very beautiful village" plagues the articles... We need like a hundred people to help clean them up. Mm you interested in helping tackle a few of the Punjab region district settlements articles? Category:Populated places in Punjab (Pakistan) is pretty big but the content lying in most of those articles is shocking... ♦ Dr. Blofeld 22:12, 16 March 2011 (UTC)

Always interested, but generally the way I work is I tend to fix them as I come across them (which is too often!) whether by just random browsing or recent changes patrol. Working from a category I find burns me out very quickly, especially when seeing so many bad articles I get easily discouraged. I think, from your responses to me on the IRC that I have upset you in some way. I know that in the past on one of the few occasions you have talked to me there, I got the impression that you were angry with me because I don't understand how wikipedia works and that you took it personally that I don't understand what to do. I have always been grateful for the help you gave me in moving my articles back, I must have omitted to thank you for it.

I had hoped for a little support when I came online, you know I don't spam the IRC constantly; rather I wait until I am at my wits end before even attempting to use it. Perhaps this will explain my difficulty in communicating there, maybe I come across as snarky because I am so upset by the time I get to that point. You didn't seem interested in why I am having problems at all. If the IRC isn't the appropriate forum, where do I go? Who do I ask for advice? Petrb adopted me but I never see him online and in the case of the issue of the editor I had below, that editor followed me from an article talk page to another user's talk page so I felt I couldn't post on Petrb's talk page.

Please assume good faith. I am desperate for help but all I seem to get is a metaphorical "go away we don't want you". Why is this? Am I really that objectionable? If so I certainly don't mean to be. It's really hard for me to be positive when it comes to wikipedia as my experiences have been so negative so far. Please don't bite me, my questions are genuine. I'm looking for practical advice, if I make you too annoyed to help, please tell me someone else I can ask about things or tell me a better way to go about it. Is there a way to get adopted by someone who has more time to spend helping me? Petrb has done his best but it just hasn't worked for me, I was hoping he would be on the IRC so I could talk it over with him but he never seems to be there these-days.

You were one of the few people on the IRC who I thought would help me, now I don't have the confidence to go there anymore because I felt you were being very dismissive.

After the nonsense over the Naga brothers that you helped with earlier, I moved to the space portal only to find myself caught up in the web of another editor who argues constantly, and has been very rude and negative towards me (and other users). For this reason I was reluctant to engage in further participation on talk pages. A few days ago, I finally snapped. I got an apology; but I am deeply concerned that you are the second high level person to be abrupt and rude to me. (Good faith?) Maybe my way of phrasing things bothered you, but should my observations as a new comer not be considered? Do they not perhaps point to reasons why people leave and should they not be passed on to develop ways of improving wikipedia? Being a new comer I don't know who to raise that matter with, where to get advice, who to complain to, whose attention to draw it to (whatever is appropriate from that list).

Sorry if you felt I was dismissive, I thought I did answer your questions and helped you. Yes you did seem angry in your phrasing, and with statements such as "I just don't want to be here anymore. I was trying to tidy up before I go.", "Wikipedia's loss I guess.", and "Make it as hard for newcomers as possible then make pretty graphs about loss of editors. o.O" amongst other statements, I did get the impression that your intention was to try to guilt trip us into making you stay, after you already stated you just "wanted to leave". Especially since this was the same attitude you took then when we were helping you with the 'Naga brothers' fiasco; no matter what encouraging words we gave you you kept on threatening to leave, as if we haven't grovelled enough for your liking. I'm sorry that's just the impression you gave, I'm being honest. There's only so much we can do to keep you here, ultimately you have to enjoy being here and editing here, you have to want to stay. Your contributions are much valued but we're not going to twist your arm to stay, if you're not enjoying yourself then perhaps this hobby isn't for you. Yes, my statements were intense, for the reason I outlined above, please read them for what they were: indicative of the sheer desperation that I feel as a new user, or, now as I come to think of it, is it the desperation I feel as a vision impaired user...?

As you say you won't twist my arm to stay, fair enough, but there have got to be ways to make it easier for new people, surely? I feel I have made good contributions to wikipedia so far (I hope) Vladimir Komarov, Pavel Belyayev, but the lack of support has been highly discouraging and I basically don't know what to do in a lot of instances. I don't need a gold star for everything I write, but it would be good if people acknowledged I have more to offer before writing me off when I am clearly frustrated and in dire need of assistance. Because I am vision impaired things that seem obvious or easy for you and other editors are a real struggle for me, I suspect this is having quite a negative effect on my ability to cope on wikipedia, (that is both the procedures and the lack of understanding from other editors); is there any additional help I can seek about this? I am not currently using a screen reader (get your computer to read wikiMarkup and you will quickly hear the problem with that) I can read if the text is large, not too high contrast and in the black/blue/green colour range, but do have difficulty processing visual information and get highly fatigued. Is there a template to make people aware of this so that they understand me better?

As I said, after the Naga brother fiasco (thanks again for the help on that), I moved elsewhere in an attempt to get something done. The Khaled Abol Naga draft is still there and represents unfinished business. As I said, I have already had a lot of trouble with another editor and this has reduced my resilience for wikipedia considerably, after battling for several hours with trying to compose responses for talk pages I was exhausted by the time I got to it and was back thinking that the anguish wasn't worth while.

I don't think I can get the Tarek Naga draft to a form that would warrant moving it to the main space and will put the delete thing on it once I have sorted out the other article. I feel fairly happy with that decision as I wrote the article to try to learn wikiMarkup. I have tried what you said on the IRC about the talk page but I do not know exactly how it is supposed to be done; I probably didn't do it right and I am concerned that the draft has the warning tags on it, again, I am not sure how to get help with that issue.

I don't want "grovelling", what I want, and have always wanted is practical advice and I want assistance, I guess I've been a bit too inarticulate to convey that properly because I'm so damned frustrated?

Just so you know, I have had a little success dealing with people on here, I respect Mlm42 very much for his practical help and good advice and I like working with him a lot.

But yes, I am highly discouraged today, and a lack of a sense that I can readily get help has contributed to my frustration; hence my initial question about the use of the IRC, I genuinely thought I was using it wrong. I've seen your writing and I can tell you you're definitely worth bothering about; I can tell you'd be a really good content contributor. For the Khaled Abol Naga article, I see you've already left a note on the talk page about your rewrite, you did that right, all you need to do now is wait maybe a day or two and see if anyone responds to your message. If you get no response then you should assume that there is consensus for you to make your bold changes to the article, and you can go ahead and replace it with your rewritten version. The easiest way to do that would be to simply cut and paste your version over top of the existing one, remove all the warning tags of course, then note the following in your edit summary: "Bold rewrite per talk page, text copied from User:Aakheperure/Khaled_Abol_Naga_draft", then redirect your userspace draft to the mainspace page (I can do all this for you if you're unsure how, just ask me on IRC or my talk page) In addition to IRC there are many other on-wiki resources out there that you can take advantage of if ever you need help. The Wikipedia:Help desk is an great place to ask a detailed question and the volunteers who patrol that board are very experienced, knowledgeable, and extremely helpful. About the vision-impairment, you really should consider getting a screen reader if you intend to do this regularly. In fact, I know of someone else here in wiki-land that's also vision-impaired and he uses a screen reader. Adding or Finding Out Information That Should Be Listed on Someone's Biography Page

This is a first for me, so please excuse me if I am doing this incorrectly. I really don't know exactly HOW Wikipedia works with regard to making or adding changes to something that I've read, and wasn't quite sure who to contact, so I guess "You're It", so here goes.

I was reading about the actor/singer, John Barrowman. Now the only reason that I know of him as both an actor AND a wonderful singer, is because he portrayed a lawyer on the American television series, "Ally McBeal", which had starred, Calista Flockhart, and he also got to sing on the show. I would've never heard of him had I not seen him on that show and yet there is absolutely no mention of his participating in it. I do not believe that I have an overactive imagination and just made up his name and his face in my mind, but then again, one never knows.... Anyway, is there a definitive way to find out this information and then put it on his biography page? It isn't listed on his personal website either which I find strange.

I realize that this probably isn't the type of genre that you normally view, but as stated originally, I couldn't figure out who to contact on Wikipedia. Thanks in advance for any help on your end.Songbirdssing0210 (talk) 23:27, 19 March 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I was trying to figure out how to leave a comment regarding the edit of the Amusica article. It is generally accepted that Amusica is not caused by loss of hearing, rather it is what happend after the ear.

The following does not seem to make sense: "Congenital amusia, as the term suggests, is acquired as a result of birth or one's genes; while acquired amusia occurs as a result of accidental brain damage, stress, loss in hearing, or cognitive deficits. Symptoms of this disease vary from lack of basic melodic discrimination and recognition despite normal audiometry and above average intellectual, memory, and language skills (Peretz 2002)."
