AA colour tracking

{{Greater color contrast ratio}} with |2=black and |3=white should always return a colour combination with a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1. If it's not doing that, it's probably time we set up some test cases. Furthermore, there appears to be an agreement that we ought to meet the triple-A criterion; therefore, I see no purpose to the new categories. Alakzi (talk) 15:39, 26 July 2015 (UTC)

@Dirtlawyer1 and EvergreenFir: Sorry for the delay in getting back to you on this. I don't think that we need separate categories for AA and sub-AA color combinations in {{Infobox television season}}, for reasons I've already mentioned on the talk page. As for {{Episode list}}, most of the invalid colour combinations are going to be from the table headings, which aren't actually controlled by the template. If you take a look at Night Gallery, for example, the white text on the dark blue background is produced by CSS added directly to the article, not through any template. Having said that, some transclusions of {{Episode list}} do have coloured rows, e.g. List of The Secret Millionaire episodes. I've added some code to the sandbox that would track invalid color combinations in these rows, if that's desired. (Rows that specify a colour are already tracked at Category:Episode lists with row deviations, if you're interested.) — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 03:58, 27 July 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, Strad, but I think the Infobox television series discussion is past this now. Feel free to start reviewing the discussion, but I would suggest giving it another 12 to 18 hours for everyone to get their last words in. You may want to call for final comments on the talk page, with a summary of what you perceive as the emerging agreed-to way forward. But I think everyone has reached the level of exhaustion and that's probably a good thing. If giving the article editors 30 days to implement voluntary AAA-compliance brings the objectors to the table, I would suggest that should be an easy compromise for everyone to accept. After that, we need to get some of the WP:TV folks focused on drafting a 30-day notice for the article talk pages, a set of instructions, and preparing the tech aspects to get the notice delivered using MMS or the like. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 04:33, 27 July 2015 (UTC)

Strad, no one has commented for more than a day on the 30-day voluntary compliance plan; it appears that all of the previously active participants have either agreed or acquiesced, so I think now would a good time for you to draw a line under this as the neutral admin and chaperone in the discussion. Next, we need to focus the WP:TV guys on preparing the 30-day notice to be placed on the talk pages of the affected articles, as well as a set of instructions for the article editors on how they may select new AAA-compliant color schemes. We need to nudge this forward to resolution. Thanks for being there. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 23:19, 29 July 2015 (UTC)

Template help

Hey Mr. Stradivarius. I was hoping to ask you once again for help with a template issue. I'm trying to create the be-all, end-all of a template to inform CSD patrollers of bad nominations. See {{sdd4}}. I've got it working, including some coding that for me strained the limits of my coding abilities, paltry as they are. I can't figure out how to add one function I want it to include. I want one portion of introductory text to be excluded when you add a certain parameter or maybe make it equal to "yes". See Template:Sdd4#Removal of introductory text.

I've tried many things, if parsers, switches, and so on, but I'm lost. What it should do is: when you include something like "no intro" as a parameter, or maybe "|no intro=yes" or actually, maybe "|intro=no it will then exclude the text: Speedy deletion work is important and I do appreciate the effort. I would just ask that you please review the criteria carefully because accuracy is also important. Help with Module:Dts

Hi, I would like to ask you to help me with Module:Dts (I want to change it on other Wikipedia project; I hope it is not bad from me to ask someone here on English Wikipedia). I'm an active user on Serbian Wikipedia and I want to make this template functioning properly there (with respect to the grammar of the Serbian language). So, I did this with template but don't know how to make "dd. month yyyy." format that previously mentioned language needs to use (with dot after day number, and with dot after year number except when dot is previous to the comma sign: "month dd, yyyy." is OK, but "month dd., yyyy." isn't). To sum up: Could you help me by giving me the changed code of the module Dts (either this one or English one) on my talk page that will be able to show "dd. month yyyy." format, and also in which "month dd, yyyy" English format will be changed into "month dd, yyyy." I'd also like to be able to enter data in the template like this: {{dts|21. фебруар 1875.}} i.e. {{dts|day number. month name year.}}, and like this: {{dts|21|2|1875}} i.e. {{dts|day number|month number|year}} (with dots, and in this order; not like it now has to be: {{dts|year|month number|day number}} etc.). Thanks in advance. I'd be very grateful if you help! --Obsuser (talk) 23:52, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
@Obsuser: Sure, I can do most of those. The best way to make this work with other languages would be to make a config module where the month names and the error messages are loaded from, and then load it with mw.loadData. I don't have the free time to do that now, but I might later on today. I'm afraid I can't enable {{dts|day number|month number|year}}, though. There are already several places that this module is used with very early year dates, e.g. 30 AD, so if we allowed the order to be flexible it would be impossible to add dates like {{dts|30|06|20}} because there would be no way of telling which was the year number and which was the day number. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 06:11, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

Hi Mr. Stradivarius, I have a query about this edit. Can you direct me to wherever I can find it? Many thanks, Sarah (talk) 18:51, 9 August 2015 (UTC)

@SlimVirgin: The template has been converted to Lua, and the current code is at Module:Infobox. You can see the old code in the page history of Template:Infobox. However, the actual CSS styles for the template are kept at Mediawiki:Common.css (search for "/* Infobox template style */"), so that may be the best place to start looking. What behaviour were you looking to emulate? Perhaps I can give you some better pointers. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 04:25, 10 August 2015 (UTC)
Hi, thank you for the link and for the offer of help, but in case it's complex, please don't feel you have to spend lots of time on it. It's just a minor aesthetic issue, but something I like doing.
In general I prefer to use {{Infobox}}, rather than (say) {{Infobox person}} because I can choose my own parameters. In particular I sometimes add a block of colour to the top of the box. You can see it at this version of Christian Science, which is achieved by using {{Infobox}} and writing
title = Christian Science | titlestyle = background-color:#CCCCFF
When I use {{Infobox}} on biographies, someone will often swap it for Infobox person, so I've tried to introduce the colour using Infobox person. Example at Val Plumwood, achieved by writing (copied from someone else)
name = <div style="background-color:#CCCCFF; width:100%;">Val Plumwood</div>
But as you can see it's not the same. The colour is inside the box, rather than on top of it, and it's just a streak of colour, rather than spanning the width of the box. I'm therefore trying to work what to add to Infobox person to achieve the colour block on top (a "title =" option), or how to customize Infobox person on particular articles. Sarah (talk) 17:34, 10 August 2015 (UTC)
@SlimVirgin: That's not so hard. The issue is that Infobox person uses the "above" field of {{infobox}} for the name, rather than the "title" field that you were using. So you would need to convert Infobox person to use the "title" field, and then pass the "titlestyle" field through to Infobox, like this. Then you could use |titlestyle=background-color:#CCCCFF; in articles to get the colour you need. The trick will be persuading people to change Infobox person, of course. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 18:01, 10 August 2015 (UTC)
I don't think it'd be very hard to convince people to swap "title" for "above", given that it is superior from an accessibility perspective. You can keep using a <div> to colour the background like you're doing now, and hope nobody notices. ;-) Alakzi (talk) 18:06, 10 August 2015 (UTC)

Hey, I'd like to increase the usability of the Signpost polling template. The best way to do, in my estimation, would be to replace the generic no-votepage-error with a more specific error, one which asks the user to create the votepage using a click-through. This would simplify the poll setup procedure to:

  1. Insert a poll and save the page.
  2. Click on "Create votepage". This is the editintro used by the old wikicode template, and this is the preload. Lua should be able to fill in {ARTICLE_TITLE} in both cases using the preloadparams[] action=edit parameter (doc).

The category you made for tracking Potentially illegible userboxes seems to be causing some problems; I noticed it's not only applied to the template itself; but I also find it being applied via transclusion to my talk page where I've transcluded an affected userbox. To be honest I don't think this was an intended effect and I personally find it somewhat annoying. Seems to me that it defeats the purpose of the whole category if you can't just apply the category only to the template page itself and not have it transclude down to pages who choose to include the userbox via transclusion. I even tried to subst the template to rid myself of the unwanted category placement but that didn't seem to work either, so I'm actually at a loss at how I'm supposed to remove this category. Hello, Mr. Stradivarius

Codename Lisa here. How do you do?

I have a harassment problem: A user called Alakzi is reverting my messages to another user, even though it is not a hostile message. Here is the diff: [3] and [4] I am open to debate as to whether my wordings were appropriate (especially one of my edit summaries) but last time I checked the policy, no user is allowed to remove the messages of another unless it is an extreme case of incivility and the removing user is impartial. I have reasons to believe this is the start of a long term harassment case. Here is why.

Two days ago, I reverted Alakzi's dangerous breaking change to a highly visible template, Template:Infobox software. Fortunately, no counter-reverting has occurred. But my attempt to write an explanatory message in the template talk page (Template talk:Infobox software § Duplicated parameter) was interrupted three times by edit conflict error messages (Alakzi posting there) and a database outage. So, eventually, seeing as Alakzi had discovered half of the problem, I wrote a lighthearted "Bravo" message that has proven very successful in the past, and an explanation as to why I reverted first. But Alakzi responded with a profanity. (I believe I myself have in the past made a breaking change somewhere; you and Redrose64 astutely implied that if I repeat, I might lose my editing privileges. I don't remember having responded with a profanity, assumed bad faith in either of you, or have chased you around Wikipedia reverting your talk page messages on technical grounds. As of now, my appreciation for both of remains untarnished.)

I believe if we properly extrapolate Alakzi's bad faith in the template talk page, this is not an issue of a simple disagreement; it is a case of revenge that is about to start. You may disagree but at least I believe I am entitled to my talk page messages not being removed. So, can I have it back?

Best regards,
Codename Lisa (talk) 18:41, 15 September 2015 (UTC)

You are not "entitled" to anything; it is common sense not to issue vandalism warnings for test edits, and a boilerplate warning hardly qualifies as "your message". Also, I did not "chase" you anywhere; I noticed their edits because they were made on the doc page of {{Infobox software}}, which I've quite obviously got on my watchlist. I checked the new editor's contribs to see if they'd performed any other unconstructive edits and happened to notice your misapplied warning. Alakzi (talk) 18:49, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
Well, this is the first attempt in being rational in Alazki's part; although, given the fact that we are in presence of a person who has the power to block him, that's wise and rather unsurprising. But sadly, he is wrong. Even though I am not the owner of Wikipedia (and broadly construed, entitled to nothing in it), so is he not. And while I concede that perhaps the discovery of my messaging might have not been an act of active chasing, its reversion was at best an attempt to establish that he has rights beyond mine and at worse, an attempt in vengeance.
If MS is not responding, then I might as well escalate it to WP:3RR level.
Best regards,
Codename Lisa (talk) 19:53, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
You appear to be under the misapprehension that so long as you abstain from cursing, pretty much anything goes. No, it's not appropriate to mock other people for making genuine mistakes; it's not appropriate to insinuate that I'm chronically irrational; and it's not appropriate to suggest that I'd abandon my position and bend a knee to admins for fear of being blocked. My revert was not vengeful, but earnest; misapplied warnings are potentially damaging. I possess no rights beyond yours; rather, we all possess the right to correct the mistakes of our fellows. And no, I absolutely do not regard you as evil. What a ridiculous thing to say. Alakzi (talk) 22:06, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) It appears an IP user, 185.108.128.11, has stepped in and resolved the problem with a compromise. I know CL is a compromise lover. So, CL, if you are seeing this, I think you should rest the harassment case for now. Or don't start it. The behavior is consistent with Alazki's ordinary behavior. You know, in general, he is ... well, what's the polite word for it? WP:DBAD? He has tried to play God one time too many. Fleet Command (talk) 21:57, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
... well, what's the polite word for it? You didn't try very hard, did you? Alakzi (talk) 22:09, 15 September 2015 (UTC)
I believe this edit was a misunderstanding. Alakzi obviously thought that Codename Lisa's message was sarcastic, but I've never seen Codename Lisa be at all sarcastic before. I suspect this may be a cultural difference: in some cultures sarcasm is a big thing, and you have to pay attention all the time to detect whether what someone says is sincere or not; but in other cultures, sarcasm is rarely used, if it is used at all. I've only heard it very rarely here in Japan, for example.

As for the user talk warnings, the talk page guidelines do indeed say that messages left by a user should not be removed by another user, with various exceptions. If the warning was blatantly wrong or excessive then I think it might fall under the "Removing harmful posts" exception, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. I could see the case for an IAR alteration or removal if a warning was otherwise suboptimal somehow, but if I was going to rely on IAR for this I would leave a message on the talk page of the person who left the original warning to make sure that there were no misunderstandings or bad feelings about it. In situations like this, good communication can go a long way toward preventing edit wars and other drama. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 00:40, 16 September 2015 (UTC)

Talk page guidelines may say that, but WP:VANDAL is a policy, and states that "Mislabelling good-faith edits as vandalism can be considered harmful". The section WP:NOT VANDALISM specifically excludes various types of sub-optimal edits, including the type in question, from being classed as vandalism. [{WP:BITE]] also applies. Well, here's the edit in question. If that was done in mainspace, I think most people would call it vandalism. As it was done to a template documentation page, I agree that it was more likely to be a test edit than an intentional act of vandalism. If there's not the apparent intent to cause damage, it's not vandalism. This is spelled out for you in the lede of WP:VANDALISM, and WP:AGF might also be of relevance. The most likely scenario here is that the new editor was attempting to fill in the infobox to use in a new article or on their user page or some such, which happens quite often. Alakzi (talk) 12:49, 16 September 2015 (UTC)
Yep, I agree that that was the most likely reason for the edit, and as I said, I don't think it was vandalism. I also believe this was a misunderstanding. Alakzi has a somewhat interesting communication style and sense of humour. While it might be effective if you were talking in person, he/she does need to be more careful about how their comments might be perceived in a online environment with editor from different cultural backgrounds. I think it is also fair to say that Alakzi does not mince their words to others, and yet is very sensitive to others' words. Hello Mr. Stradivarius. The other day, I discovered something I think may be a bit problematic that I also think you may be able to either resolve or tell me where to go to request it resolved. As you know, I have the template editor user right. When I go to a page that has both cascading protection and template protection, the tabs I see at the top are "...Edit, View history...". However, the "Edit" option appearing worded as so is misleading to me since I'm not actually able to edit the page at all. Whenever I have seen this, I have been going to WP:RFPP to request that the template protection be upgraded to permanent protection so that the "Edit" option will be changed back to "View source" (which is the way the "Edit" option usually appears when non-admins try to edit a protected page.) So, instead of having to always do this, I'm trying to find a way to get the applicable interface page (probably in the "MediaWiki:" namespace updated so that if a template editor goes to a page that has both template protection and cascading protection enabled, the "Edit" option will appear as "View source" instead. Hello, MS.

Hey, gave it a try at User:Superiots with options "Notify user of page move" and "Soft-block the user and leave a block notice". The dialog out said said "moving to draftspace... done", "tagging draft..." then it broke :( I checked the JS console and it reported Uncaught ReferenceError: apiManager is not defined in ApiManager.prototype.softBlockUser, the line user: apiManager.getTargetUser(). However it did in fact tag the draft, just didn't notify the user or block them. Hope that helps diagnose what went wrong. Thanks! MusikAnimal talk 22:12, 16 October 2015 (UTC)

Thanks for the script, Stradivarius. I have used it once, and - I'm sorry to say - it did not go well, have a look at Draft:St Michael's Rowing Club. A minor thing is: I can see the script calls {{uw-draftmoved}}, a template I often use myself but never with the third option. Let's make it clear that leaving the Reason for the page move field blank will yield the in most cases perfectly fine standard message of uw-draftmoved "This is because the Draft namespace is the preferred location for Articles for Creation submissions." If I knew you better, I would boldly edit User:Mr. Stradivarius/gadgets/Draftify, now I'm leaving it to you. Again, thanks for the script, I'm sure it will be a timesaver for all of us at AFC. Sam Sailor Talk! 16:15, 7 November 2015 (UTC)
@Sam Sailor: Thanks for the report! The page blanking bug should hopefully be fixed now. I think the problem was that the script was trying to get the page content of the draft page after it was moved by the script but before it was registered as having being moved in the Wikipedia database slaves. I've changed the script so it just grabs the content before the page move and uses that. And after thinking some more about the reason field, I just decided to remove it altogether. The defaults should work for most situations, and I couldn't see a good way of editing {{uw-draftmoved}} to make an arbitrary reason work nicely. If anyone really misses it, though, I'll try and think of a way of putting it back in. — Mr. Stradivarius ♪ talk ♪ 04:24, 8 November 2015 (UTC)

I'm sorry this user is the main reason the template has to be protected. We try to talk to him, but he blanks his talk page. I believe this user is trying to vandalize the template by moving certain wrestlers. The user is nothing but trouble. -Keith Okamoto (talk) 23:29, 7 October 2015 (UTC)

I have blocked him for disruption, since he edited without consensus after being told to do so by three others. @WikiLeon: Thanks for dealing with this. I don't think we need to get AN involved yet - the normal consequences for edit warring and disruptive editing should be enough. If there continue to be problems after we've tried the usual things then we can think about whether we need to have other sanctions.

@Keith Okamoto: Actually, it wasn't vandalism - vandalism is when you intentionally try to damage Wikipedia.
