Templates

Any page with the template. Edit this page. At the bottom, underneath the edit box is a list of templates used. Click on River Medway. Edit this page- and the code appears. I have taken out the duplicate River Beult- but left a mistake for you to practise on. (River Len, River Loose-- in wrong order)! To create a new banner. Copy the text from here. On a page edit- type {{ New banner name}} . Show preview. Click on the redlink. A blank edit page appears. Paste in text, and customise. The Medway template was cloned from the River Stour template, which I found when adding infoboxes to all Kent rivers that were missing them. I am unsure about the background colour used as it is not consistent with {{navbox }} used in some Tonbridge and Malling articles. I may try to clean that up soon!.

Current events

I noticed that you edited Portal:Current events/United Kingdom and I was wondering as I am the starter and at the moment really the only contributor whether you would consider keeping up to date for next week as I am going to be away from a computer and I would like it to be kept up to date, I will quite understand if you do not want to, but just once or twice adding a few things from mon-fri would be greatly appreciated. DYK & lists

I saw the comment from User:House of Scandal that he didn't like lists on the DYK talk page. I have self-nom'd a list article. I did check the rules, and saw nothing there that disbarred lists from appearing on DYK. Are lists not eligible, or was it for some other problem with the article that it failed? - List of Tree Cities in Ohio Mjroots (talk) 07:09, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

Lists are eligible but only the general prose section is considered to be part of the length criteria. So something like australian Olympic medalists in swimming pass because the prose section is long enough. Teh tabulated section isn't counted. Dutch question for you…

I saw your Dutch language box and I'm hoping that you might be able to glean something from a small scan of a ship-related document in Dutch. Most of the poster seems to relate to fares and baggage rules, but it looks like the very top section might detail arrival & departure times for ships of the Batavier Line in Rotterdam and London. Do you think you could take a look and see if that's correct, or if you can even read it? I'm working on Batavier Line, and three of their ships—Batavier II, Batavier III, and Batavier V—and some indication of the length of the journey would be very helpful. Yeah no ships, I was strictly ground-to-air missiles, so mostly army. Though I did do one ship-to-ship missile, well a 76mm course corrected shell... and I can tell you all the areas on the Shipping Forecast, and even know where most of them are and what it means. With the sockpuppetry, of course you have multiple bets here. Either I am accused of being your sockpuppet, you mine, or both a third party. Of course you or I could be accused independently of being the sock of a third, but that would be out of the range of the perm, I think.

For a while I did think that perhaps you tracked me, not from any malice on your part but because things that interest me might interest you, as you seem equally omnivorous (but I don't see you translating much Latin these days...). Your edits are always good and helpful, and I shan't forget how we collaborated on Newmarket and Chesterford Railway which, while simple, still took some working out and I learned a lot from doing it as I had done lots of minor subbing but there were lots of new things to learn too. I have gone on to do other more complicated things, if not in articles themselves, at least in the chat. I am bracing myself to write my first template.

You are truly a credit to Wikipedia, I take my hat off to you.

Lists of listed buildings

Hi, there's been more discussion at WT:HSITES about naming lists of listed buildings. So far you're the only one to have strongly objected so I'd appreciate any further comments from you. The suggestion would only apply to lists of listed buildings (so not lists of mills as they're not all listed) because of the repetition of "list" that is currently involved in the naming convention. Rijksmonumenten

Thanks for note to my Talk page, but indeed I already understood all those selected Rijksmonumenten were in the category set up for it. But there remains no source in their articles, or anywhere else as far as i know, that establishes any or all of them are in fact Rijksmonuments. This situation is far different from what i am familiar with in U.S. NRHP listings, where it is easy to check at government set or several private mirror sites which places are actually NRHP-listed. I notice in several of your mill articles that you do seem to have precise information, including the Rijksmonument listing number, but I don't see a specific source. The Rijksmonument article DYK is going down the tubes for lack of any specific source. If you could provide specific sources for some mill articles, I would be very happy to cover just those ones and drop the existing selected ones, in order to save the DYK. doncram (talk)

PROD of Rijksmonument (Belgium)

Hi, there's a PROD for Rijksmonument (Belgium) with it being asserted that "Rijksmonument is a purely Dutch (The Netherlands) term, in Belgium monuments are simply called "monuments" (monumenten) or "protected heritage site" (beschermd erfgoed). The site linked to is from a community which is part Dutch, part Belgian,and the section linked describes the Dutch situation only." Does that seem right to you? It seems opposite what i/we were told before when developing what became Rijksmonument (Netherlands). And should "Beschermd erfgoed" be the article name for Belgian monuments, instead, or would we need a French term to be part of the article name, or should it be "Protected heritage site (Belgium)"? doncram (talk) 15:17, 23 September 2009 (UTC)

Editing scalabe vector graphics

If you're interested in editing .svgs then I'd advise downloading Inkscape. It's free and has no "free trial" crap. Editing the map of the UK and Ireland to change the colour of counties is quite a simple task. When you have the map open in Inkscape, left-click one of the counties then left-click one of the colours at the bottom of the screen to change it to that colour. You'll probably want to chage it to the same colour as one of the other counties. To do so, when the county is selected, press F7 then left-click the county which has the colour you want your selected county to be. Here's a link. Jolly Ω Janner 21:09, 22 November 2009 (UTC)

Hi Mjroots. I am an employee at Press TV & I am assigned the grand task of making sure the wikipedia page regarding our news agency stays accurate & has propaganda & slander removed.

I noticed that you have place a semi-lock on the page. Thank you for doing so because many people continually attack us through wikipedia.

If you may please direct me - I'd like to know how & what process to remove the majority of inaccurate & slanderous information. If you notice most of the text has relatively little to do with Press TV itself yet full of opinions, biases, and slander. These comments could be made regarding any news organization such as CNN or FOX News or Sky News.

Housebarn DYK - add European world view

That's a great suggestion! Unfortunately I don't speak that language. I was hoping to get a better world view on the article - I even asked Victuallers to help me but he wasn't able to. Would you help the article out by adding content in these areas? There's plenty of DYK credit to be awarded, of course! New service for old maps

Hi, I've just noticed a new mapping facility for old maps. Try clicking a UK grid reference, or set of lat/long coordinates for a point within the UK; this gets you to the GeoHack page. On the right you should see the familiar "Great Britain" heading with boxes beneath. The new row is at the bottom of the uppermost box; it reads "SABRE Maps"; "Map"; "OS maps". In both of the latter a menu down the left-hand side gives a choice of series, scales and date periods. Here I have to rely on your experience. The IP 189.122.146.171, apparently located in Rio made two bad attacks in the last three days. Just a few hours ago he started again but a trustworthy collaborator, HkCaGu, was quicker in stopping the action. The person is copying and pasting data from GRU and adding nonsence like LY flying GIG/JRS (Atarot has been closed for quite a while...). Plus the person is adding flights that need interline connection at GRU. I am inclined to ask semi-protection for a week because every attack, normaly done in the early hours, requires quite some work to undo. EGovMonet Deletion

Dear Mjroots,

EGovMoNet was recently deleted from Wikipedia. I was still in the process of improving it when that happened and had not had enough time to recuperate the content for later reuse. So I asked Athaenara, who had deleted the article, to give me the opportunity to retrieve the latest version. Reading the logs, I am confused. Does this mean that you deleted the article after Athaenara had restored it? I still have not had the chance to retrieve the latest version before the article disappeared. Can you please help me?

Re: Date formats

Unfortunatelly I did it my way, and it will stay that way according to who ever added the template (in this case me): Template:Use dmy dates. I might be wrong, but oner of the admins here told me that if there is a template, do it that way, if there is non, feel free to edit it your way or add a template. Talk to @Ryan Vesey: and/or @Worm That Turned: for more in depth explanation. Plus, its not suppose to be a big deal and mdy dates are even better, because its much clearer on the tongue (since Wikipedia doesn't use of). O' and WP:TIES have nothing to do with our discussion. 2015 Cajon Pass wildfire

Hello! Been a while since we "chatted". I was hoping you could take a peak at "my" semi-new article, 2015 Cajon Pass wildfire. While a significant fire in its own right, I believe what truly makes it notable are the local, state and federal efforts to limit unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) activity in the vicinity of wildfires that came about as a result of UAV activity after this fire, as you will see documented within. Europe 10,000 Challenge invite

I'm well aware that M_w isn't the abbreviation for megawatt. However, it is an abbreviation not used in everyday English, which would have caused many readers to stumble over it. I was also pointing out that the ITN item above it used "a magnitude 8.1 earthquake," a construction much more familiar to the general reader – and that inconsistent terminology was being used on the same page.

Perhaps they did; my experience dates from the '60s. But the main point was that (in my experience) M_w isn't common English usage. I've never encountered it in news coverage of earthquakes. Formerly news stories referred to "measuring X.X on the Richter scale," but now they mostly use the simpler "a magnitude X.X earthquake." busing vs. bussing

Yes, that's correct American English. The single-s spelling is used (I think) to distinguish the "transport by bus" usage from "bussing", which would be taken to mean kissing (I don't know how prevalent using "buss" to mean a kiss is in the UK, but in the American South it's still in quite regular usage, not in the sense of a really passionate deep kiss but more like a big sloppy kiss, the kind of kiss your parents would tell you to give your grandmother on the cheek when you were a child. I may come over at the project talk page blah we have heard all this before - it is the big problem for over a decade of editing there have been some really absurd re-inventing the wheel for the sake of it stuff - when its all been through before.

I have little faith in trying to protect readers from distress - just watching the news is more stressful than most of the most problematic wikipedia articles or items. So real life is really a lot more traumatic than most items inside the pedia. I strongly suggest if persons are upset by an image of something on a project item on a talk page, then they clearly need toughening up. The real world is a lot worse.

Having said all that - if there is something other than predictable trolls turning up at such discussions - or the mentioned editors who were pinged - with genuine cases of deep trauma from a very small image - and clear indication they are not set up to it in any way - then I would take notice, and suggest some negotation for ways of protecting them. But when it is the usual mob, I see no need to do anything. JarrahTree 12:30, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

@JarrahTree: - Being an admin carries a certain amount of power. That power has to be balanced with an equal amount of responsibility. That an admin can do something does not mean that they should do it. If you really want rid of the skull and crossbones from the portal template, then open up a discussion at WT:DEATH and gain consensus for said removal. I can see that jumping in and removing it on one editor's request is likely to be highly controversial and it's not something I want to risk my administrative privileges for. Hello! I humbly request indefinite semi-protected status for the Wikipage Sinn Féin, due to the controversy of the topic, we get a lot of IP's editing Sinn Féin and removing sourced content or changing the article for slander purposes, to straight vandalism due to the controversial nature of the page. This page has been worthy of protection for awhile now, however no admins really edit or check in on the page. You can view the history of the page and see! I am here to request "indefinite semi-protected" status for the page Sinn Féin, as upon lifting of the protection, I believe the same issue will arise again, if you can possibly do this, that would be amazing! Redrose64, I looked at the article and came to the conclusion that there was not a problem so large that protection was necessary. Also, this post was a C&P of the exact same post (including timestamp) made on fellow admin El C's page two days ago. Looks like a case of admin shopping to me, as El C didn't protect the page. I watch the page, as I do most controversial Northern Ireland related pages as many people know that’s my main area of admin interest, and I’ve never seen a lot of disruption there that requires protection. I’m not shy to protect pages when they get hit with sectarian disruption or the like, but I’ve never really seen it there.
