NameWatcherBot: Accent stripping?

Some recent attempts at bad username generation have added accents to characters to obfuscate English words.

A quick look at User:H/HBC_MCP/NameWatcher suggests NameWatcherBot does not strip accents before attempting to match patterns from the blacklist.

To prevent this sort of obfuscation, I suggest the bot should, in addition to any other string normalization prior to comparison, remove accents by first performing Unicode NFKD normalization, which splits accented characters into base characters and combining accents, and then removing all combining characters (which are those in the ranges from 0x300 to 0x36f inclusive and from 0x1dc0 to 0x1dff inclusive) from the result. -- The Anome (talk) 11:56, 22 August 2009 (UTC)

name bot regxp forms

You're welcome to edit or suggest edits to the blacklist (only administrators can edit, others can suggest edits on the talk page). UAA - backlog

Hi - just wondering, has anything changed with the helperbot's threshold for a backlog recently? I've been reporting items here and I realize it's early in US/UK - but just seems like it's been a while since an admin was there. Maybe it's just a quantity threshold, and not a time/age threshold, but it just seems like with some of the age and severity of these it should have been listed as a backlog earlier. The backlog tag is added and removed by the bots simply based on the number of reports waiting, not their age/severity/etc. The number of reports at which the backlog tag is added and removed can be changed by modifying the "AddLimit" and "RemoveLimit" values in the helperbot opt-in string in the page. Formatting Idea

How about a table for formatting? Without taking the time to edit every single entry, I did a couple of rows from the WWII index at User:Krellis/Sandbox. You'll note I added a feature request there, too - I'm not sure if it's really possible, but it would be neat to try to include an estimate of the number of replies in a given section. One way to try to approximate it would be the number of times "UTC" appears in the section - not perfect, by any means, but it might work. Or you could go by changes in indentation level. As long as you indicate somewhere that it's approximate, that probably wouldn't matter too much. Of course, I have no idea how difficult it would be to actually implement :) The table with alternating row backgrounds still might be at least somewhat of an improvement from the current style, since it will keep all of the links together in a row and help prevent items from running together. —Krellis 23:33, 2 February 2007 (UTC)

The bot doesn't care - either of those would be fine, as long as the opt-in exists. Talk:Aang/Archive Topics would be the more "standard" way of doing it, though - because the archive refers to talk topics, it makes sense for it to be in the talk space. In fact, I'm not sure subpages are allowed in the article namespace on enwiki, so the latter option may not actually be possible, and should almost certainly be avoided. —Krellis (Talk) 12:34, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay - it looks like your opt-in had the wrong number of leading zeroes - you're not using any leading zeroes in your actual archive naming, but you had specified 3 for that parameter. Sortable Numbers

Really? It looks to me like the sort works properly with single-digit numbers anyway. If I remember correctly, the sort order is intelligent about numerical sorts, so it should sort properly even without zero padding. HBCAI not marking edits as bot edits

Hi there! First, let me just commend you on writing an incredibly useful bot! The ability to quickly survey current and past discussion is tremendously useful. • But, of course, I have a question: In my watchlist, most work done by robots is flagged as a "bot edit". There's a little black "b" next to the entry, and bot edits can be shown or hidden. HBCAI's edits don't appear to get marked that way. No "b", and they always show. Is this a known issue? • To try and help out, I went looking for information on how those edits get so marked. Unfortunately, I can't find anything. Yeah, actually, I believe this was intentional - at the very bottom of the bot's request for approval you'll see that Mets501 notes in his approval message that the bot does not need a flag. I think there was some more detailed discussion of this somewhere, though I'm not sure where. As I recall, the thinking was that the bot doesn't do a huge number of edits, and so didn't need a flag, as it wouldn't be flooding recent changes. The bot does have over 100 archive indexes that it's maintaining, so one could possibly argue that it does more edits now than it used to do - I'd certainly have no problem with it getting a flag, it's just something we would need to poke the bot approvals group and/or a bureaucrat about. I'm not 100% of the best place to put it, though - either WT:BAG or the bot owner's noticeboard seem most logical to me. —Krellis (Talk) 19:51, 31 December 2007 (UTC)

Can you help me with the set-up?

I'm trying to set up the bot to archive the (as yet non-existent) archives for WP:MUSEUMS. I created the target but I'm a little lost on masks and stuff. Do I have to do numerical archives or can it be monthly? I ask because I'm not sure how to set up numericals, but I can c/p the source for the monthly archive from my own talk, which I set up for MiszaBot. I'm aiming for a 30 day archive time. Thanks! At the moment monthly archives are only supported manually - that is, each time a new archive page is created, you have to add it to the archive index opt-in code. If you take a look at the source of my talk, you'll see both archiving to numbered archives and the archive indexerbot opt-in:

The MiszaBot config is very similar to what you're using, I expect, except that it's using a numeric counter instead of monthly - just set it to start at 1 and replace the path to the talk page, of course. Roughly the same would apply for the archive indexerbot opt-in (and you'd probably just remove the template= part entirely and just use the default template to start).

Help regarding index numbering and interwiki links

For some reason the bot is linking to a non-existant article here, even though I have my archives on the page User_talk:Daedalus969/Archives/1. Duplicate index entries from page moves?

I recently had the AIDS talk sub-pages moved into sequential archives (Talk:AIDS/NPOV dispute → Talk:AIDS/Archive 6, etc). It looked to have been properly done, but now the indexer bot is creating duplicate entries for all pages that were part of the move (6 and up,current archive). Sortable durations

In the current setup, the "sortable" table cannot possibly sort "durations" in any usable way. There is no way to easily distinguish "9 minutes" is shorter than "5 hours and 29 minutes" which is a shorter period of time than "2 days and 9 hours". My impression is that users don't care about the topics that with minutes-length duration, I guess it would be best to use a constant zero-padded days+hours format, respectively: "00 days 00 hours", "00 days 05 hours", "02 days 09 hours". There is a %%durationsecs%% replacement string available when creating custom templates - this string will expand to the duration in seconds, which is safely sortable. You can use some of the advice at Help:Sorting for making an invisible sort key - specifically, making your duration column look something like this should do the trick: <span style="display: none;">%%durationsecs%%</span> %%duration%%. I don't have an example of it right now (though I just changed my own template to make sure it's working properly - I know I tested it when I added the feature some time back, though), but I'm pretty sure that should work. —Krellis (Talk) 15:34, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Deleted index

Hi Krellis,

Very cool what you can do with this bot. I have read the information on the HBC Archive Indexerbot page but I have missed anything there which may explain why the bot deleted my archive index. No biggie--I just would like to make sure I have set it up correctly. I had it set up with carriage returns and line feeds after the "|"s to make it easier to edit, but now I have removed them in case that causes a hiccup. Here is what I have now:

Help with the source code

Hey, hey! So, got your source code. Got the package I needed (MediaWiki). Bot running gives Can't locate object method "special_export" via package "MediaWiki" at archivebot.pl line 317 error in a code part, which is responsible for gathering the jobs to be done. I think that package may have been withdrawn entirely, as the link to CPAN now comes up empty. Unfortunate as my code uses it too. You may want to hang onto any distros you have, and long term consider switching to a different MW access mechanism. Hi. One of the AIV helper bots was editing logged out as 208.86.225.40 (talk · contribs · WHOIS). There was a note on the talk page there that it might be yours. I blocked it for now. Found at least one place that was causing it to think it was logged out all the time and repeatedly log back in, but that should have been causing the opposite of an "editing logged out" problem, so I'm not quite sure what's up with that. I don't see any reason that the login check would be failing to find when the bot is logged out, so it should really never go more than 10 minutes logged out. Maybe you just caught it in one of those circumstances? Your bot may have made a mistake

A while ago, one user reported another on the Vandalism Report Page. Soon after, the one reported vandalized the report, placing someone else - Grawp - in their place, who was perma-blocked, probably erroneously. Attempts to undo the vandalism were met with edit conflicts by your HBC AIV helperbot3, and thus this bot went ahead and banned Grawp. -RadicalOne---Contact Me 23:22, 24 November 2009 (UTC)

The bot doesn't ban or block anyone, it just cleans up the AIV page by removing users that have been blocked by administrators. If it was repeatedly removing an entry, it was because it referred to a blocked user, and thus did not need to be listed any further. Redlinks

Hye. The archive bot I use added many sections multiple times into my archives and into different archive pages. The HBC bot then indexed these. I then deleted those archive pages but the redlinks to the sections which no longer exist still appear in my index. I have tried to blank the index to make it start again but it re adds the sections. Accent quirk

It seem the bot does not understand accented letters because the few wikilinked headers on my talk pages, that are recorded in the "Discussion Topic" column, become mispelled redlinks in the index created by the bot. The problem seems to be that the accented letter get mangled and so the link no longer works. Have a look at the fourth entries in my index at User talk:Ww2censor/Archive/Index to see what I mean though the "Active Link" does work. The third entry, also an accented header, is also curious but with a different result giving an curious topic name and the active link does not work, bring you only to the talk page and not to the actual post. I'm pleased I managed to create an index on the first try, but maybe I used the wrong parameters — each topic is listed twice:

The duplication is because you're using "indexhere=yes" - normally you would make an index that covers all archives on a page, which would live at something like "Talk:Testosterone/Archive Index", and have a mask of "Talk:Testosterone/Archive <#>", with the opt-in string placed on Talk:Testosterone. You CAN use the bot the way you're using it, but for it to not duplicate when used that way you'll need to change "indexhere=yes" to "indexhere=no". —Krellis (Talk) 13:50, 2 December 2009 (UTC)

duplicated section titles

When there are two section names that are identical except for different capitalisation, the bot is not using an anchor that works. Per the log file, "# 11:47:30 02 December 2009: Not writing to Talk:Troll/Archive index as I cannot find permission (sourced from: Talk:Troll (Internet)) HBCAI" - the opt-in was trying to index to "Talk:Troll/Archive index" rather than "Talk:Troll (Internet)/Archive index". Bot can't handle the en dash character

I decided to try and debug this myself. Currently, I'm pretty sure the fault is in either the create_report subroutine or the diff operation (or both). Judging by the logs, I'd say this is what happened: The bot did a dry-run on the 29th, after you added the bot code to the talk page. Since then, there have been no changes to the talk page. Thus, the bot is not aware that there are changes to be written. Further changes to the page should (baring any unforeseen future dry-runs) result in the bot writing the index. 13:56, 30 December 2009 (UTC)

Can you have consider adding a parameter called "checknew" = yes/no, #

Basically it will show a table of every single article that is being requested to index. The # represent the interval when it will check if new article exist (interval units: # of days). I think this will be helpful in knowing how many article may need for the temporary. The page will have a simple table of (article name, Archive Amount (S#), interval(yes/no) ). S# refers to special archive namespace. Though this might be a temporary feature, since Wikimedia Userability Initiatives is having a plan on task. Confused bot at Talk:Homosexuality/Archive index

I think HBC Archive Indexerbot has gotten confused by my reorganisation of some of the talk page archives at Talk:Homosexuality. I moved archives 11–17 to archives 13–19, and then moved Talk:Homosexuality/Archive11 and Talk:Homosexuality/Archive12 to more standard page titles; the latter pages weren't linked from Talk:Homosexuality before the reshuffle. I also moved a few of the messages at Talk:Homosexuality/Archive 10 to Talk:Homosexuality/Archive 13. I tried blanking the archive index, but the diff between the pre-reshuffle and the current version shows that the index bot has duplicated and removed several topics. I think the index of Talk:Homosexuality needs to be re-generated from scratch in order to fix the mess. What's the best way of doing that? Graham87 01:57, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

I've cleared the bot's cache and watchlist and am doing a fresh run now (it needs to have that done every once in a while to get through problems like this anyway). There was an error in a particular opt-in that was causing the bot to get stuck, so it wasn't dealing with the cache clear very well... I'm not the bot owner - I'm doing some talk page stalking. However I suspect it's because you didn't put the correct text at Talk:Michael Jackson/Archive index; I've fixed it for you. Keep in mind that the bot has stopped for the moment, presumably to deal with my query in the section above. However, the bot did two edit runs after you created the archive index for Michael Jackson, so if you'd created it correctly, the bot should have worked as far as I can tell. UTF-8 characters in section titles

Another problem in Talk:Homosexuality/Archive index, which I discovered while doing a diff between the new and old versions, relates to UTF-8 characters in section titles. After the entry for ""taxes on homosexual boy brothels ...", an entry appears titled "लैङ्गà ...". When I try to click on the link for that section, both Internet Explorer 7 and Firefox 3 crash without an error message, though this may be a problem with my screen reader. However the garbage section title is a problem; the section title following that one is listed as "”Sex” is inherent to meaning of “homosexuality”", which is supposed to contain curly quotes. Yeah, the UTF-8 support is ... painful, at best. Unfortunately, as I've mentioned above, I don't really have a lot of time to spend dealing with the bot and wiki issues these days (and have taken nearly a full month back and forth getting data to Rami regarding the above issue). Turns out this bugged me enough that I spent time messing with it rather than playing video games this afternoon. Thanks, I think you've nailed it on this run; the section titles containing unicode characters display correctly, and the links to them work properly. The link to the section below the one about homosexual boy brothels in Talk:Homosexuality/Archive index still crashes for me, but I've found out that it's definitely a problem with my screen reader JAWS; it's probably because the URL is so long. The last index, according to the index page, was 31 January 2010, and recent logs say "No change, skipping" (and I really, truly do have new changes.) Do you know what's gone wrong? Please clear its cache and watchlist, like you did the last time I broke an archive index. I just moved some messages that were improperly archived at Talk:Arnold Schwarzenegger/Archive 1 to Talk:Arnold Schwarzenegger/Archive 4, and that will probably confuse the bot. Also, Talk:Arnold Schwarzenegger/Archive index hasn't been edited since February, even though some sections had been archived into archive 1 after that date. Thanks. Indexing by date

Hi, I noticed that your bot creates an index with all the titles and responses, but are you aware of a tool which can categorize the archives by date? For example, race and intelligence has 82 archives. When I'm looking at a particular section of the history, I know the date and I want to see if discussion occurred in that time period - but there seems to be no precise way to identify which one of the 82 archive pages to look at. This doesn't seem like it would too difficult to program, although I don't have the skills to do it.II | (t - c) 03:16, 24 June 2010 (UTC)

Is it possible to add more information about duplicates to the logging? Currently it only one dublicate entry like "Request on Talk:Light duplicates target Talk:Light/Archive index" is shown. It doesn't tell what is the other entry with same target. Can this information be added? Currently two duplicates (non-User:talk) are unresolved:

Hugely useful and I'm sure under-appreciated. • But, of course, I'm here because I have a problem: The index at Wikipedia talk:Citation needed/Archive index has a bunch of redlinks to Wikipedia talk:Citation needed/Archive 5. "Archive 5" was mistakenly created; it should have been #1 and has since been moved to Wikipedia talk:Citation needed/Archive 1. However HBCAI doesn't appear to have noticed that. Is it possible to debug the bot code? I assume the problem relies in the login procedure when the bot starts. Based on the logfiles it seems like the bot is logged out already from the start. From what I've seen it's never running a full run logged out, and it does in fact check to ensure that it logged in at the start. The problem is that it's getting logged out in the middle of its runs for some unknown reason. Yes a fix to stop it doing the edits (but not necessarily recovering cleanly) would be to change page.pm's save method so that it includes assert=bot as a URL parameter. So POST $obj->_wiki_url . It should be indexing, the logs appear to indicate that it's working. Are you still having trouble with your indexing and/or template? It's worth checking the log for references to your page to see why certain things may or may not have happened. —Krellis (Talk) 18:57, 24 January 2011 (UTC)

The bot is skipping my talk page in the logs:

Yeah, it skipped mine last time it ran as well, and the first time it ran on my talk page/archives it added threads that were long gone to the index (and hasn't updated the index since). Usually a kick of the bot's cache will fix this type of issue, so I've gone ahead and nuked its cache and watchlist. The next run will probably take a while, but hopefully will clear up any issues like this. —Krellis (Talk) 14:26, 7 February 2011 (UTC)

Cannot get bot to index more than the talk page...

I cannot see how to get the bot to index ALL the index pages. I THINK I'm very carefully following the instructions - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:HBC_Archive_Indexerbot#Instructions - but the results I'm getting - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Posttraumatic_stress_disorder/Archive_index - say otherwise. Any help offered would be much appreciated!

Interesting interaction with Mizabot?

Hi and thanks for the Archive Indexerbot! I was looking today at Talk:Autism/Archive_index and found a discussion "Symptoms" that was listed as being both on the current Talk page and Archive 12. The index said "Report generated at 12:34, 22 April 2011 (UTC) by HBCAI." The threads were added to the index by Mizabot I at 2:05 am and deleted from the main talk page at 2:06. that same day. I'm surprised that it showed both pages as the location of the discussion. You may want to look more closely at the caching system to see if there's a bug revealed by this border case. Thanks again!
