Shlonak my fellow Iraqi, I can understand why you removed the part about Saddam wanting to annex Israel, I don't think that is true either, but you actually removed another part aswell maybe by mistake, about Kuwait and Khuzestan, and about potential unions with Syria, Lebanon etc, and a couple of photos. This part seems ok, did you mean to remove it? I just want the article to be as good as it can be, and I thought that part was ok. Please let me know what you think. I do agree that such terms is used regionally but since this is the English Wikipedia and a whole section is dedicated to the "Naming Dispute" it is over kill and nothing good will come of it. Libyan map

Could you make an edit to the map please, I don't know how personaly. There has been a lot of discussion in the past about Bani Walid, however, today the government took journalists on a tour to Bani Walid and photos of loyalist milita were taken in the town. For confirmation look here [2]. The town is thus government-held. Here [3] is another image from the journalist bus while they were traveling on the road from Tripoli to Bani Walid, government vehicle seen. Bani Walid than definetly held by the government. Hun and Adiri are most likely government-held towns. The reason is there has been no word since day 1 about the situation in those towns. If they were rebel-held the opposition would like it to be known they are in charge. There has been no word of demonstrations in the sub-Saharan region of Libya at all, the reason is most likely that the tribes there, a lot of them Tuareg, are almost all Gaddafi loyalists. Also, the Tuareg make up most of the mercenary volunteers. Actualy, there were reports that most of the reinforcements that Gaddafi got that helped him in the beginning were from this region, because they remained loyal. So I don't think any change is neaded there. That's the only part of Libya that is definetly loyal to the government and plus stable. In any case, there have been no reports or any sources on which we can base our change of the map regarding those cities, however there is enough reason to change the status of Bani Walid. The map is based on Libyan districts, and Hun and Adiri are the capitals of two of the 22 districts of Libya, so however you turn it we need to include them on the map as district capitals. EkoGraf (talk) 03:06, 24 March 2011 (UTC)

Could you change the map please, Ghadames is under government control. Sources are here and I will quote them:

Zawiya still green, not blue. I checked that report. Except for that one report there have been no other reports on fighting in Zawiya. The UN representative was most likely thinking about Zintan because there have been clashes and bombardment there for the last two days. And this abc source talks about bombardment southwest of Tripoli in connection to Zawiya clashes. Zawiya is west not southwest of Tripoli. Southwest is Zintan. For Al Kufra I agree maybe, because I saw a report that military officers in that region said they are on the side of the rebellion. However, I don't agree for Zawiya because, like I said, there has been no reports of fighting there, not even from the rebels themselves which is significent. Source that confirms Zawiyah is in firm control of loyalists [7], quoting it Forces loyal to Muammar Gaddafi have razed a mosque in Az Zawiyah that had been used by rebels as a base, as well as a graveyard in a central square where opposition fighters are buried in that city. Brega

The fighting is no longer near Brega. The fighting is at Ajdabiya, loyalists attacking the city. Here is a source [8]. So it would be a good idea to remove the blue ring around Brega and put it around Ajdabiya. However, since the front is largely moving back and forth constantly on the road between those two towns maybe it would be even a better idea to chart a blue line to indicate the frontline midway between Brega and Ajdabiya, so we wouldn't always move the blue ring from one town to the other. Misrata map

Since your good with doing maps, could you maybe do a map of Misrata, so we can show loyalist-held from rebel-held areas? We have a reference/source, the BBC, here [12]. You could find a map of Misrata through google. EkoGraf (talk) 01:02, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

It seems the only one that can be used is the google satelite map. The only others I could find are the ones used by the BBC, Guardian and this one [13] (10 days old) to show the current situation in the city. I guess they didn't put names on the streets because the majority of the fighting is on Tripoli Street, Benghazi street, city center, the port road (heavy equipment road) and the port itself. Here [14] you could find a detailed map of Misrata, but without any street names. Like I said, it wouldn't be so bad since the majority of the fighting is concentrated in those five places. Wazzin and Kufra

Kufra

State TV claimed Kufra was taken by loyalists. A civilian and a rebel in the city claimed that it was taken by loyalists. A rebel spokesman from Benghazi claimed that the town is 75 percent under loyalist control. The key here are the civilian and the rebel in the city (possibiliy of spokesman saying propaganda to lift moral?). So I think the best solution for this situation is to put Kufra to green but encircle it with blue, indication like Misrata, most of the city controled by one side but the other side is still around it. the demographic bias problem

i'm glad you appreciated those edits. But they weren't meant to be funny. Regarding a theme present in most of those edits, there's a whole meta article discussing the in-built demographic bias problem, which you might want to read in case you didn't know about the article. People editing with perfectly good intentions will nevertheless tend to follow the biases of their sociological environment. WP:BIAS doesn't claim to have found any miraculous cure for the problem, though it does give some suggestions.

Given what you say about yourself on your user page, you might be interested in work on Violence against academics in post-invasion Iraq, which includes a small amount of the extensive, referenced material deleted from the List of killed, threatened or kidnapped Iraqi academics. Given the huge number of list pages in the Wikipedia, i think that the deletion of the page was obviously related to the demographic bias problem. Imagine (proportionally) about 4000 or so US university academics and other professionals being systematically assassinated, and the governmental authorities failing to make any proper police enquiry. Wouldn't that be a huge subject in Wikipedia covered by many articles? In any case, despite the US withdrawal to bases and its mega-embassy, assassinations of professors have continued in 2011: http://www.brussellstribunal.org/academicsList.htm

If you're interested in working on this, you should be able to ask an admin to get hold of the content of the old article including its revision history, e.g. putting it as a subpage of a user page. i suspect that the number of active en.wikipedians willing to defend the article might be much greater now than four years ago.

Is there really a systematic campaign deliberately aimed to "lobotomise Iraq"? By who (Israel? Iran? US? Saudi Arabia? all of the above?)? Or is it "just" an internal, sociologically suicidal dynamic of tit-for-tat based on ethnic/religious labels? (Given that Iraq is still occupied by 100,000(?) or so foreign fighters, both official US governmental foreign fighters and unofficial mercenary foreign fighters, it's hard to believe that it could be purely "internal".) The BRussells Tribunal page says that Prof. Ayad Ibraheem Azzawi Al-Jibbourie was shot dead in front of his family by US forces on 7 March 2011, and assassinations by unidentified gunmen seem to be continuing. IMHO this is a notable topic.

Hmmm... i only just realised that the closing comment for deleting the article was "The result was Drop a Daisy Cutter on it (delete). --Luigi30 (Taλk) 15:36, 26 January 2007 (UTC)" which presumably refers to the Daisy Cutter bomb. i think that that appalling lack of respect for Iraqis supports my suspicion that WP:BIAS was involved here, even if Luigi30's role was only in closing the debate.

BTW, just a disclaimer: this is not a promise that i would help work on the article. i don't like to feel that Wikipedia editing is something i "have to" do. If i find a few minutes free and see something useful to add or see something that needs to be corrected, then i do some editing. If not, then i have to trust that others will do the work.

One more thought: given that the complaints in the deletion discussion are about the "list" nature of the article, it might be better to create it as a "prose" article, maybe with something like a timeline as in the MENA protests/uprisings/revolutions articles. Or at least compare with other comparable list articles, such as the list of Guantanamo Bay prisoners of war.

Misrata maps

Thanks for your great maps of Misurata! Since the battle in the city is effectively over now, and almost all of the map is now under rebel control, I was wondering if you could make a new map for the high water mark of the Gaddafi advance (roughly April 16).

Need help with Aramaic

One user said this source says "Majdal Shams" is an Aramaic name, another said the source says "Majdal Shams" derives from an Aramaic name.

Some have said "Majdal Shams" can not be Aramaic, but I dont think they speak the language.

Siege

The rebels have already said three times the town has fallen and is in loyalist hands, I don't get what the problem is? A rebel spokesman from Zintan yesterday clearly said the town is under Gaddafi control. I belive the town is blockaded, not under siege, in an attempt to punish the citizens for rising up by starving them out. Also, I belive that at the very least, if not changing Yefren to loyalist-held, Ryayna HAS to be changed to loyalist-held since they already advanced through it. Quote Rebels and residents who fled Yafran say pro-Gaddafi forces hold the centre, but men of the town who have taken up arms occupy a cluster of houses on high ground at the edge of town. It's a Misrata situation just reversed with the rebels the besieging force on the outskirts while loyalists are in the center. The evidence of the last few days, statements by rebels and residents is overwhelming, and so I again urge that Yafran be collored green but with a blue circle. The rebels obviously only hold a string of houses on the outskirts, and not all of them at that since the loyalists have a supply link to the city center. Cool. One more thing. On the map for the Tripolitanian Front in the Misrata area rebel-held territory is right up to Zlitan. However it's not. Yafren and Bir Ayyad

Just wondering how you concluded that Yafren is under Gaddafi control when most major new sources like Reuters Al Jazerra and NY times all say it is mainly under rebel control and is under constant attack? Is there any way that you could change it back to rebel control they never confirmed they lost it ..... actually with my second point on Bir Ayyad a new line of supplies can get to the needy city/town of Yafren that has indeed not fallen to Gaddafi. Recent developments as of June 3 according to Al Jazerra and Reuters and NTC/ Rebels on Twitter the town of Bir Ayyad has been liberated of Gaddafi control. We libyans call it Ayyat but google maps it is Ayyad. If there is any way you could add this town (on the main road after Al Hajj and before Yafren) showing it is under Rebel control would be nice.

Dafniya

Please adjust the Tripolitanian front map so that it shows rebel-held territory west of Misrata only up to Dafniya. As it is now the map shows rebel territory all the way up to the gates of Zlitan, which is not the case. Consult this source [19] for confirmation. Sabha was never taken by the rebels, it was only reported that the opposition (most of them unarmed) took control of a few streets, not the entire city. After which it was reported that the loyalists went in hard to crush the resistance and after that no new word. Guess what that means? If the rebels did take Sabha they would use it as a propaganda tool. Also, Rafy, please remove the blue ring around Zawiyah, it creates an impression that the town is surrounded by the rebels, which is not the case since the highway going through the town toward the border has been reopened. Sabha

No word from the rebels in Sabha for more than 10 days now. I belive the loyalists have reestablished total control over the city so Sabha should be green not blue. Some proof of this is that there was a regular NATO air-strike on Sabha yesterday killing four loyalist civil defense members [20]. Also, it's been confirmed by a rebel commander-in-hiding in Zlitan that the uprising there was also crushed [21] with no more resistance being put up. EkoGraf (talk) 16:44, 21 June 2011 (UTC)

Bir Al Ghanam

While I agree that Bir Al Ghanam should be added to the map, the way you made the map looks like Bir Al Ghanam has already been taken by the rebels and is deep in rebel territory, while in fact it was confirmed by a BBC reporter who is with the rebels that the opposition only advanced from Bir Ayyad 10 kilometers down the road to Ghanam yesterday. And the rebels said they were on the western and southern outskirts of the town only. Your map shows rebel territory well north of Ghanam, northeast and east of the town. You should scale down rebel territory to just up to Bir Al Ghanam and not beyond it and you shouldn't include the town itself to be on rebel territory.
