Scheuerman Block in Seattle

It has taken some time, but it is now possible to confirm that the Scheuerman Block was by Samuel Woodall, not Elmer Fisher. On June 19,1889, the Post-Intelligencer included an announcement of the "Sherman Block" at Front and Cherry and credited Elmer Fisher with the design. However, three weeks later, on July 13, 1889, the Post-Intelligencer listed Samuel Woodall as the architect of the "Scheuerman Block" (spelled correctly) at the northeast corner of Front (which is now First Avenue) and Cherry Street. Further, on January 1, 1890, the Post-Intelligencer published a list of all of Elmer Fisher's 1889 buildings; the list does not include Scheuerman Block.

The City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods Historic Properties survey posted on line (which you cite) is generally reliable, but does include occasional errors. If you check their web page for the Scheuerman Block, you will see that almost all the sources of information listed are secondary sources. The only source cited for the year 1889 is the Post-Intelligencer article on June 19. But the later listings (July 13, 1889; January 1, 1890) indicate that Fisher was replaced and the actual architect of the Scheuerman Block was Woodall.

The source I cited previously was Distant Corner: Seattle Architects and the Legacy of H. H. Richardson, published in 2003. That book has a list of Elmer Fisher's buildings and the list does not include the Scheuerman. The authors say they relied on newspaper reports and similar primary sources, and appears to be reliable.Chesterct (talk) 03:27, 13 January 2010 (UTC)

Here we go

Hi Jmabel, sorry for the late response. I've received some bad news in real life and I was a little bit low :-(

Cortando las capas superiores y en los interfluvios aparecen formas onduladas o “cabezos”

I don't know how to translate "interfluvios" but as far as I understand, "capas" here refers to layers (or maybe tiers, I didn't understand ever the difference between both terms) in the sense of strata. When it talks about "cabezos" (a derivative of "cabeza", head) it refers to curved strata that appears over a plain layer having a rounded shape (that somehow may remind to a head, that's the origin of the name). Therefore, your answer to your question ("what the formas onduladas (wavy forms) are composed of?") is possibly wrong since I think that clay is a soft material easily eroded. If, as it seems, the cabezos stand out from a more or less plain surface, it's possibly because it's made of harder material.

En 1489 los Reyes Católicos concedieron un seguro a las embarcaciones que arribaran al puerto moguereño desde Canarias, norte de África y países europeos de la cornisa atlántica.

My obvious answer would be "insurance" but I don't know whether it makes much sense. The problem here is that the author of most of the article is blocked (by me, in fact) as he uploaded hundreds of pictures taken from other sites claiming they were theirs. I'll try to talk to other involved editors.

Desde el XV el puerto contaba con un muelle de atraque para carga y descarga de mercancías, calzada, astilleros y una alota que era, junto con las de Huelva y Palos, de una destacada actividad dentro del litoral onubense

I don't really know what "alota" can be. I'll try to talk to any involved editor.

With regard to "arciprestazgo", your translation is right. Mind that in anyway there are only forteen archbishoprics in Spain (see here).

Hope it helps, sorry if I haven't been much helpful this time. I'll keep you informed. --Ecemaml (talk) 22:41, 27 January 2010 (UTC)

AfD nomination of Clarence Acox, Jr.

An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Clarence Acox, Jr.. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Clarence Acox, Jr.. Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Systemic bias

I happened upon your user page and was inspired by your article on systemic bias. I agree with you. My major Wikipedia interest is San Diego issues, particularly the neighborhoods of San Diego, and I have noticed that affluent or middle-class neighborhoods always have Wikipedia articles, often elaborate ones, while poor or minority neighborhoods tend to have no article at all or only a stub. So I have resolved to do what I can about this, identifying the non-covered neighborhoods and expanding or creating the necessary articles. Thanks for the inspiration. --MelanieN (talk) 01:28, 31 January 2010 (UTC)MelanieN

Re: DYK University of Osuna

The full story is I wanted to find a better ref, found the book I added there and then realized that it only supports the old (16 century) problems, not the 18 century stone-throwing ban. Then I've read again your source and it actually quotes a book, which I AGF because indeed, the author is respectable and would hopefully not fabricate quotes on such issues as stone throwing :-) Materialscientist (talk) 22:30, 8 February 2010 (UTC)

Yes, I think that archive.org link is worth adding to "external links" because it is a relevant and direct link and is not that obvious. Not everyone would go to the article talk. Searching for 500 aniversario universidad de sevilla in Google doesn't easily bring there. Materialscientist (talk) 02:10, 9 February 2010 (UTC)

If you are confused about a certain Spanish noble article

This editor[1] has a problem of simply making articles consisting of a total mess(poorly written to the point of jibberish and no real references). I've been cleaning up after him for over a year. Enjoy! --Kansas Bear (talk) 01:01, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

So at which point could User:Aecharri's activities[2](creating illegible articles, re-writing articles with useless and unsubstantiated information, etc.) be considered disruptive editing? --Kansas Bear (talk) 05:37, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
It's very hard to do anything about someone whose work is obviously well-intentioned and whose edits are a mixed bag. Really all one can do is roll back the bad edits & clean up any detritus left in his wake. One of the disadvantages of how Wikipedia is set up. - Jmabel | Talk 17:37, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
I'd like to add Schloss Hartheim: I believe this would be an important article about an Euthanasie place in Upper Austria, and there are two articles in the German wikipedia that help as sources, but atm, the article is just garbage=-( I tried to remove the worst things, but it might have been better to simply remove Aecharri's changes as a whole... Is it possible he is actually a bot? --Regression Tester (talk) 16:02, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
I agree that the article is a mess. My previous comment still applies. - Jmabel | Talk 16:32, 30 March 2010 (UTC)
I totally agree with your comment. I just stumbled across the article, wondered about inaccuracies (as I first thought), found out things were plain wrong, that they all came from one user (I asked myself how old this user may be), and that there is some discussion here. If you believe that it would be better to simply revert Hartheim to December 2009, please do so. --Regression Tester (talk) 16:37, 30 March 2010 (UTC)

Saluting the new Washington Irving of the XXI Century

I live not far from where Washington Irving resided in the Alhambra (Granada), (Spain) , in the 1820's . I hope your paws are not as merciless with me as other American bears seem to be each time I research ANYTHING not related with the USA. Do you realize that a very, very, modest 30 US Dollars an hour represent hundreds of bucks DISMISSING EVERYTHING WRITTEN in good faith?. Things are not as inmedite as you think, because probably, you are TOO young. Let me say to you, a few things in exchange of obliging you to pay some drinks for me when I show you around beautiful Granada places in Western Europe located Granada .

1) When you reason about the "enclave de Treviño" you say in your talk page, Burgos province is a part of Castilla-La Mancha. You are wrong, my dear, Burgos is now a province of the Region known as CASTILLA-LEON. You only need to look to any children school map published in the last 30 years. Before, there was a distinction between Castilla La Vieja and Castilla La Nueva. Should you had been in Spain during General Francisco Franco times, some 40, 50 or 60 years ago then Burgos would be located in Castilla La Vieja.

The 4th Duke of Infantado, you picked from my work, is one of the hardest members of the XVI Century to be pinpointed indeed. It was no rare to use DIFFERENT family names for successive Dukes because the Mendoza´s loved to change names from parents to sons, brothers and females, because, probably of their Jewish ancestors and roots deriving from Roman Catholic Cardinals and Bishops ancestries. What do you think, that with 2 PhD in science I choose Napoleon or what? Do you think computers can not be used, eventually, to sort out THEIR GENEALOGICAL MESS in the XXI Century by people like me?. I hope you come here and we have many meetings, dismissing, even, GENEALL Internet site, a Portuguese original page now used as a Bible by mewcomers like you?. Do not act as naif apprentices do when searching Internet, my dear.

I can see your fury when specifying the year and country of my PhD´s but there were no instructions on the Wikipedia Page when I did it. Spare my life if possible then.

Surely, you probably agree educated people, should not use words such as irrelevant, jibbery, etc. on judging other senior people working for decades interacting NEARLY EVERY DAY with University students in their late teens and /or twenties, nice and obliging indeed ALWAYS. I am sorry I had lived in England for a few years and I can not claim any connections with Rambos and/or other Middle West Prairy heroes, even if my life in France and Italy acquinted me for many years with all sorts of Students four letters words in French and Italian. Please be nice, I would like to be nice, too.

Best wishes and do not be so harsh, I feel so hopeless trying to be nice to anyone. Thank you. --Aecharri (talk) 18:28, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

  • I have spent time in Granada. I like the place.
  • I have no idea what you are saying about money. As far as I know, no one gets paid for editing Wikipedia.
  • It is quite possible that on a talk page I inadvertantly gave the wrong autonomous community for Burgos. Slip of the tongue (or, I suppose, of the finger). I certainly did not make that mistake in the article. I actually am old enough that when I first studied Spain, it was in the days of Castilla la Vieja and Castilla la Nueva, but I never made it there until after the transition to democracy.
  • I agree that geneall is not a great source. In working on the article, I'm citing three online sources. None of them seem to contradict anything you wrote - at least not that I've found so far, keeping this before 1601. They are, however, a lot clearer. If you have better sources, they are very welcome. Use them for specific inline citations so that people can tell where you got your facts. If you are citing a book, great: when I am writing an article from scratch, I often work largely from books or journal articles, but I cite them explicitly, including page numbers. Just mentioning the book at the bottom of the page has been generally unacceptable on the English language Wikipedia for several years. I didn't make the rule, but I abide by it. (The only exception is that when I am translating articles, I don't always improve the referencing apparatus, since that requires re-research. But often I do, even then. Or I improve the citations in the Spanish, Romanian, or German Wikipedia before translating.)
  • I agree that the 4th Duke of Infantado is a tough topic. I didn't "pick it from your work": I went to it hoping to get clarification for the translation I had just done at Marquisate of Cenete. I'm working on it now because in its past state it wasn't very useful.
  • You are very welcome to specify the year and country of your PhD's on your own user page. You are not welcome to change the template so that every user on Wikipedia with a PhD gets your year and country.
  • I don't know why on earth you are coming at me about Rambos and/or other Middle West Prairy (sic) heroes. Look at my editing history. For the last 2 months, I've been working almost entirely on topics related to Spain. I've done most of Wikipedia's articles on Yiddish theater, working heavily from sources in German and Romanian, and some seven years ago did the first round of serious work here about the French Revolution (see, for example, Glossary of the French Revolution, still largely as I left it back then). I've also done a lot of work on Seattle, where I live: why on earth not?

So, please, I'm not some guy who's working mainly on light popular culture topics, and I'm definitely not a child. I didn't single you out: I ran into a poorly written (and, especially, poorly cited) article of yours while working on a related article. Again, if you have better citations than the online ones I'm using, please add them. What I'm adding generally confirms the facts as you had them, and it certainly beats no citation at all, which is where you left things. - Jmabel | Talk 18:56, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

Prefontaine Building

I created a Wikipedia article on Father Francis X. Prefontaine and I used a photo of yours File:Seattle - Prefontaine Building 01.jpg from Commons to illustrate the building and the street named after Fr. Prefontaine. I was not expecting it, but I was glad to have found that photo. Since you seem to be from Seattle, I wanted to ask if by any chance you might have a photograph of the F.X. Prefontaine fountain at Third and Yesler that could also be used in the article. I was born and raised in Seattle and I worked for a time in the Prefontaine Building back in ’64. I remember that fountain and the name inscribed on the fountain. I can’t recall for certain whether the inscription is “F.X. Prefontaine” or his full name “Francis X. Prefontaine”. •••Life of Riley (TC) 02:14, 17 February 2010 (UTC)

WP Seattle categories

Hi - I wanted to suggest that you create Category:WikiProject Seattle articles and use that category in the MAIN_CAT parameter of the project banner template. That way you can keep Cat:WikiProject Seattle for your project's subpages, etc., without it being bloated with talk pages. Also move Cat:Seattle articles by quality & importance to the new category (WP Seattle articles) and use the sortkey with a space like: ...| Quality]] and ...| Importance]] to keep those categories viewable from the first page of the category. Also set the DASHBot to the new category. Hope this helps, if you would like me to organize it, I'll be glad to help. --Funandtrvl (talk) 23:25, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

  • As far as I'm concerned, you can feel free to do this. I don't think the project is terribly active (I don't usually get answers when I ask questions there), but I figured it was worth setting this up. - Jmabel | Talk 23:32, 4 April 2010 (UTC)
Okay, will do! --Funandtrvl (talk) 23:34, 4 April 2010 (UTC)

Vicente Acero

You raised the question mark over the Vicente Acero article earlier in the month; I'm with you on this one: I've done a web search, a google books and scholar search, and I can't find any trace of an earlier Vicente Acero either. Looking through the history of the article, it started off with a minor glitch (it was an honest attempt at writing a piece on the real Vicente Acero, but placed him in the 16th century due to a typo...) but was then vandalised several times in 2008, leading to the current nonsense. I'd advise we get it deleted. Hchc2009 (talk) 06:13, 11 April 2010 (UTC)

Monumento nacional

I noticed you queried Wetman's wording regarding the difference between "bienes culturales" and monuments. I have amended the article as I think there was confusion about the meaning of ¨"por" (ie for or by). --Alan (talk) 18:32, 26 April 2010 (UTC)

Göktürks

Hi. You have written [4] "Both rival state in north China paid large tributes to the Gok-Turks from 581.". What states do you mean? In previous sentence you mention Sassanid Persia and White Huns. Sassanid Persia is not located in Norther as well as central asian White Huns state was west to China. Can you clarify what you mean and may be to refer to a source of the above statement. Thanks in advance.--Hrystiv 00:20, 14 May 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hrystiv (talkcontribs)

Hello! I wondered if you'd be interested in helping translate this beast from Spanish wiki? I'm hoping to get a few of us working on translating it to share the load. Its a gem of an article on Spanish wiki. Dr. Blofeld White cat 18:29, 8 June 2010 (UTC)

Probably not right now. Recovering from surgery on my arm. - Jmabel | Talk 04:20, 10 June 2010 (UTC)
I'm doing somewhat better physically. I've been translating some of the history section as time and recovery allow. - Jmabel | Talk 04:29, 20 June 2010 (UTC)

Wish you a speedy recovery. Excellent work so far on Calvia. I'll try to translate some more over the weekend. I'm not fluent in Spanish like yourself though which is the problem. I'm an intermediate. Dr. Blofeld White cat 19:01, 26 June 2010 (UTC)

Manassas Airport

Hey I saw you added my photo of Colgan Air to the Manassas Airport article. I also photographed the terminal building the same day for the Manassas Airport article so I've used that one for the infobox. Hbrackett (talk) 02:14, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

A talk page refactoring

Hi Joe, I'm currently on a mission to find and restore talk pages which were lost during the conversion to Phase II software (the predecessor to MediaWiki) in January 2002. Before then, talk pages were meant to be at the title "<Articlename>/Talk", but a few were naturally placed at the title "<Articlename>/talk"; any pages in the latter category were swallowed up by the conversion software. I use the Nostalgia Wikipedia, a copy of the Wikipedia database from 20 December 2001, to help me find and retrieve the missing text and/or history. Some of the lost text was quite substantial, such as at Talk:Gulf War/Archive 1 and Talk:Hate speech/Archive 1.

One of the pages that came up was Jorge Luis Borges/talk. I wasn't too sure how to integrate it into Talk:Jorge Luis Borges because of its rather unusual structure, by 2010 standards, after your refactoring of the page in March 2004. I want to know if you're OK with what I did to the talk page and the archive. I renamed the archive because, in my experience, archives that aren't named in the standard format can cause major problems down the road. I didn't even realise that the JLB archive was there until I thoroughly read the talk page, since there was no archive box; one is now automatically added through the talk header.

While performing this work in the last few days, I've found all sorts of bizarre issues with archives, such as a bot placing text in the wrong archive for 18 months and a wildly inaccurate date range given for an archive. However all these issues were caused by accidents or people not reading pages properly; the format of the Jorge Luis Borges talk page and archive seemed quite deliberate and carefully thought through, hence the heads up. BTW, the main talk page is rather large at the moment. :-) Graham87 11:42, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

At a certain point a few years ago, I stopped trying to "steward" the many articles I had been involved in and focus more on writing new ones (especially translations). I don't feel any ownership over the Borges article at this point; as long as content in the talk archive isn't lost, just do whatever you feel is appropriate. - Jmabel | Talk 17:07, 25 June 2010 (UTC)

Nice job on the "Hermetica" article

As ever, Joe, a very commendable job on your "Hermetica" article, which I have just read. Informative and well-written, a classy article. NaySay (talk) 11:59, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

Hi, would you be so kind as to give us support!

Hello/bună ziua/bon dia, I hope you're doing fine and I sincerely apologize for this intrusion. My name is Claudi Balaguer (User Capsot from the Catalan Wikipedia and the Occitan Wikiccionari), I've just read your profile and have seen that you show a keen interest in diverse cultures and languages, so you understand very well what are a minorized language and culture (well since you lived in Barcelona, I think you're aware of the situation of Catalan) and maybe I am not bothering you and you will help us... I'm a member of a Catalan association "Amical de la Viquipèdia" which is trying to get some recognition as a Catalan Chapter (an intermediate structure between the Wikipedias and the Wikimedia Foundation) but this hasn't been approved up to that moment because it seems that you can't have a Chapter if you don't have a state! If you think our cause is just, you can show your support by pasting this template on your userpage: Wikimedia CAT and/or by signing our "Members and Supporters" list following the link on the template (you can have more information on my userpage). Supporting us will be like giving equal opportunity to all the minorized languages and cultures in the Wikiworld! Thanks again, I wish you a nice, pleasant and warm summer, take care! Capsot (talk) 13:57, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your support, if you ever need something from me about Occitan, Catalan or anything else, just let me know, I'll be glad to help, best regards, Claudi/Capsot (talk) 08:00, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Unreferenced BLPs

Hello Jmabel! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot notifying you on behalf of the the unreferenced biographies team that 2 of the articles that you created are currently tagged as Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring these articles up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 943 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

  1. Paco Decina - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL
  2. Nelson Cunningham - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL

Some help please

Hi! Can you please help me with two problems? I want to move Adrian Copilul Minune to Adrian Minune. As you probably know Adrian Copilul Minune is his formal name, now it's simply Adrian Minune. But there is already a redirect from Adrian Minune to Adrian Copilul Minune and can't do it myself. Also, I have created the category "Lăutari and lăutărească music" but I can't "bring it to life". Can you help me with this one, too? Thanks! Kenshin (talk) 11:27, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

  • "formal" ==> "former" ("fostul"), I presume. I can fix that. - Jmabel | Talk 15:56, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I meant "former". :-)
  • To "bring the category to life" you need to place it in (super-)categories, the same way you place an article in categories. - Jmabel | Talk 16:03, 19 August 2010 (UTC)
You mean like in "Category:Music" or something? Kenshin (talk) 19:28, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

I did it, thanks! Kenshin (talk) 19:32, 19 August 2010 (UTC)

By the way, can you set the Manele page to semi-protected, there are a lot of anonymous users that periodically sabotage the article? Thank you! Kenshin (talk) 19:43, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Greetings from Europe

Hey Joe, (as you are in Seattle I thought a Jimi Hendrix reference was appropriate) I took the liberty of copying a part of your statement about "The Wikipedia and me", as it it applies to me as well.
If you look at the section Wikipedia:Lamest edit wars and Wikipedia:Don't shoot the messenger you will understand why I got so frustrated that I no longer contribute. I thought that this was a place where you could share knowledge, eventhough the facts were sometimes presented in a lighthearted way. It seems that a sense of humour is something that is becoming rare here.

The article on Pike Place Market is probably a good example. It is an interesting Seattle landmark. I used to enjoy going there (I lived on NE 54th street). But does the article really need to be that long? Does it really need 166 notes and God only knows how many references and external links? Does there really have to be a seperate section on the Fish Market? I was going to rant on but decided it was a waste of both our times. When you visit the Fish Market again, maybe it is an idea to photograph the sign: "Caution: Low Flying Fish" and put it in the article. But that is just me being silly. --JHvW (talk) 11:59, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

I do think most of what is in that particular article belongs there. As for Pike Place Fish, I would gladly lose most of that beyond a sentence or two, though. It is a business that has done a very strong job of self-publicity, and has become well-known (maybe even famous) beyond its actual importance. I don't think it is even the most notable fish vendor in the Market (that would be Pure Food Fish Market because Sol Amon has been there more than half a century).
As for the notes: I do find that this has made working on Wikipedia less fun, though I imagine it has made it more useful as a source. As you can see if you look over my recent contributions here and in the Commons, the bulk of what I'm doing here these days is photography and translations. Much less contentious. - Jmabel | Talk 17:17, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
Thank you for your remarks. I meant to say that I agree with you, not contributing is better for my mental health, as not contributing does not lead to contention. And it was not my intention to knock the article on Pike Place Market itself, but the fact that nowadays everything seems to need much citation (even on discussion pages) and is deleted if not properly sourced. It is not as much "fun" as it used to be. As I do not eat fish, for me the Pike Place Fish Market was always a place I would prefer to avoid. Although I have always been fascinated by Gooey Ducks (thanks to Wikipedia I now know that they are called Geoducks) and the Ballard locks (and the fish ladder) etcetera. If Seattle was in Europe, that is where I would want to live. Now I have already wasted enough of your time. I believe that in California they would say: "Hang loose". --JHvW (talk) 18:58, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
I'd probably like Seattle even better if it were in Europe. Maybe somewhere between Barcelona and Perpignan? - Jmabel | Talk 19:08, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
I'd live there. 8-) --JHvW (talk) 20:15, 20 August 2010 (UTC)
