Crime fiction vs. Mystery

I noticed you changing the category from mystery writers to Japanese crime fiction writers on several pages on my watchlist. None of these people write crime fiction; they are mystery writers. (The difference, in my mind, being that crime fiction is realistic and mysteries are not.) I'm not sure if there is a Japanese mystery writer category, but that would be a better fit that crime fiction; the traditional mystery is still very popular in Japan, and is a distinct genre from crime fiction. Indeed, that's somewhat controversial issue: crime fiction vs. mystery. I'm not sure that the difference is what you suggest, that is realism vs. fiction. Rather it is Commonwealth vs US terminology plus old vs new terminology. But if you sure that in Japan the distinction is very clear cut please do create Japanese mystery writers category and reclassify the writers. In any case, I have noticed that many Japanese writers of the genre are not classified as such (be that mystery or crime), so if you know of such instances, please include them in either category. I was probably over simplifying. I just meant crime fiction is like The Wire (TV series) and mystery is Sherlock Holmes. I added whatever names I could think of, which wasn't a lot, and moved a few people around according to my grasp of their work. But one of those people was a horror writer, and another a ninja novelist, so the categories have both ended up fairly empty. Doceirias 06:45, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

At least there is no category japanese fiction novel writers:) I agree, it's quite confusing to have both novelist and writers, but some by-nationality have even blah-blah fiction writers. But it's more logical about classification within, as long as a writer has at least one novel/story/manga whatever that falls into the category it's OK to classify him/her as such no matter the rest of the output. (At least that's my understanding of categorization guidelines). Fairly empty categories it's no worries, I will definitely add more in crime fiction one soon. I is a shame you call you new categories "Crime fiction novels" etc this seems out of keeping with the "Crime novels" category is links with. The "fiction" element is largely redundant. I'm leaping to the conclusion that you may be a Carter Dickson fan <grin>; if you could add a plot summary to The Reader is Warned, and then remove the unreferenced tag, I'd be grateful. Thanks for the information; as you can probably tell, I use formats based on what I see others doing, not out of a deep understanding of the underlying concept. I'll continue to change the Heinemann and Morrow entries in Dickson articles to match your format as I go, and now I'm piling up Carr novels preparatory to starting to create pages for the main body of his work. Behn and Behniacs

Any chance you're going to work on Love Letters? While I wrote Oroonoko, I have steadfastly refused to do any more with Behn. The Behniacs and I don't get along. Not enough intellectual rigor, too much passion there. I've read all of Love Letters, and I think it's Behn's best/only actual novel, and I also think it's far superior to that one scene that everyone talks about, but I'm resolutely not going to write a byte on the subject. That doesn't stop my wishing that others would. It's just not a battle I want to fight here, as well as elsewhere. Geogre (talk) 14:10, 8 January 2008 (UTC)

Love Lies Bleeding (novel)

Hi, you have removed two categories from that article. First you called that action "recat", at a later point you called it "refined cat". Honestly, I don't understand any of this. Could you please explain?

Thanks for your answer. What I don't quite understand is why in one instance—British versus English novels—you moved the article from the "parent cat" to a more specific one while in the other—crime versus detective fiction—your move was in the opposite direction. Removal from British books category

Hi. What's your rationale for removing books such as Send for the Saint from the British books category? Is there a redundancy, or has the category been renamed or killed? I ask because you only changed about 5 of the 50 "Saint" articles, so if there is a more appropriate category I'll need to know so I can update the others. I also note that you removed Octopussy and the Living Daylights but not, say Casino Royale (novel), although that one is listed under British novels, a different category. Just curious -- is "British books" being restricted to non-fiction work only? If so, it's should be renamed "British non-fiction books". Cheers. 23skidoo (talk) 23:42, 11 February 2008 (UTC)

Hi HM -- You removed Category:Horror from Category:Science fiction studies. The definition of science fiction studies includes horror, and there is no more distinguished "horror studies". Ace Doubles and van Vogt

Hi I noticed your recent changes to List of Ace double novels and List of Ace SF Double Titles. However, I think you may have meant to do something else. I believe that The Weapon Makers was published as Ace Double D-94 under the title One Against Eternity. The link you changed for The Weapon Shops of Isher was for Ace Double D-53 and is actually a different novel. There is a good site with scans of Ace covers [1] where you can see the two covers in question.

Infobox added in Captain Alatriste

If you have time, enter the edit function in article and fill in appropriate information after the = sign. Fill in only what you think applies, but please leave all fields there. I do understand that this is technically a series article and not a character article. I’ve added the info box because 1) the series does revolve around Alatriste in large part and 2) the box really does improve what little is on the article right now. Category:Crime novels

Hi, minor point you didn't sign you post to me. Ok now to move on.

I wasn't trying to be awkward just think we need to discuss the issue. The categories "clearly" describe different things as crime, doesn't necessarily envlolve mystery, mystery doesn't crime, detective novels usually involve both but not always, crime and mystery do not always feature detectives. I admitt I have been a bit uncomfortable with the existing definitions as they imply exclusivity when non truely exists. Categorization of Novels

Actually, I just went to the Wikipedia page you referred me to and there is no such policy that you are referring to... One of the points of Wikipedia is to take advantage of relatively modern technology such as databases, categorization and indexing... So basically are you saying that if you don't know the year of a published novel, then you are out-of-luck in finding it or that if you want to see other novels of the same decade, that Wikipedia users will have to organize that information on their own? I think adding spatial and contextual information through categorization not only adds value to an entry and potentially affiliated articles, but that it doesn't conflict with any established policy at all...

But in case you didn't have a chance to read the page of "standard Wikipedia Policy" you referred me to, I have enclosed it here:

Reasons for duplication

There are some good reasons why duplication may be a benefit:

• 1. The basic principle is that duplication should make it easier, not harder, for users to find articles.
• 2. Different users may think of different categories when they look up their targets, multiple listing or locations enable users to spot their target easily
• 3. Wikipedia's categorization scheme allows for multiple taxonomies. This is a good thing and a powerful feature. The categories act as indexes, facilitating users to browse through subjects.

About Russian title in the template

Hello, Henry. I ask you not to add in the film template of articles Russian title, use Enlish title or, at a pinch, romanized title if there isnot English title. Thanks! Rainbow/Raduga film

Thanks for the help on the film page for Raduga. It was about to be deleted since it said only "1944 Russian film" and I came across the speedy delete notice while patrolling recent changes. It seemed a shame to delete an existing movie like that and looking at the internet info on the film, a seemingly important film for the period. Film Template

Well, the Soviet Russia article presently reads

In Soviet Russia, road forks you.

In English, the term Bolshevist Russia or Soviet Russia is commonly used for the period 1917–1922.

So the term certainly seems closer to historical fact than the "Soviet Union" – this being a total non-entity at the time. (Were there any significant films even produced in Soviet Georgia, etc. prior to 1922?) And, yes, the Soviet Russia article really does say that stuff about forks right now. Sure, it would be more historically accurate without the years. In my opinion, something like "Soviet cinema" (without the years) would be altogether historically accurate since it could account for the other Soviet republics, though I'll leave it at your discretion whether you want to stick to the standard sobriquet or not. Hi, Henry! Thank you for your feedback. In response, however, I would like to point out that it was you who neglected to set up a disambiguation page in the first place, opting instead for inclusion of the non-name entries in the "see also" section. I merely added one entry and re-formatted the page within this already faulty framework. Why you decided to give me crap about that is something that I frankly do not quite understand, but I am sure it was done with best intents :) No offfense is taken on my part (I indeed shouldn't have been this lazy and should have set things up properly).

That said, thank you for the fixes you've made. I am kind of not sure regarding your decision to make the surname page primary and to relegate the disambiguation page to Kotov (disambiguation) (instead of making "Kotov" a dab and moving the surnames to Kotov (surname), to which the said dab would link), but that's not really a big deal either.

The reason I am asking:

My understanding of Russian is not great. Sometimes I find films mentioned in Russian Wikipedia which are not in the IMDb, and so I don't know whether to include them in the War Books list. If I find films like that in Russian Wikipedia, can I ask you for some help?

Grigori Kozintsev and Leonid Trauberg

I ain't mad at cha but I do not agree with this edit you made. The reason is: Ukrainian was spoken in Kyiv in 1905 and so his name in Ukrainian is relevant there. Maybe the Ukrainian name of Leonid Trauberg is less relevant (less Ukrainian was spoken there the in Kyiv at the time???) but I do not see the harm in having Ukrainian names in the articles especially since both there towns of birth are not in today's Russia but in today's Ukraine (and Ukrainian is not a Russian dialect). — Mariah-Yulia • Talk to me! 13:12, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

Yes, the transliteration is a problem. I'm using that given in the Cambridge Guide to Theatre, ed Banham and A History of Russian Theatre, ed Leach & Borovsky. The English rendition of that play I've come across so far have been Girl Without a Dowry and Without a Dowry, so perhaps no need to move. Though I'm not sure it's "eponymous"... It's an unexpected development - supported by RS but inconsistent with the bulk of Alexanders on wikipedia.

Henry: hold on with relinking other articles to -ks- version. No matter how Aleksandr Ostrovsky article itself spells the name, other articles linking to him consistently use Alexander. For example, an article on his home stage Maly Theatre (Moscow) which I'm putting together refers to Alexander I of Russia, Alexander II, Alexander III, Alexander Yuzhin, Alexander Lensky (tbc), Alexander Ostuzhev and, quite likely, Alexander Vesnin (tbc). An Aleksandr among them looks odd. Another point is WP:NOTBROKEN. It's not, is it?

p.s. McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia v.4 pp. 55-66 has a good entry on Ostrovsky with full play timeline (didn't see it cited on any of related pages) but, sadly, uses -ks- spelling. Oh well. NVO (talk) 05:49, 14 August 2009 (UTC)

Poruchik Kizhe

My book pages use the original language of publication all over the place. French, German, whatever. Not just Russian. English speaking people are lazy when it comes to other languages, so I think people should be confronted with other languages.

In this case, you click on "Poruchik Kizhe" and get the Kijé page. No one is inconvenienced. The film title gives the English name already, while the Russian is in Cyrillic and not readable by most people.

So that's why I like "Poruchik Kizhe". It transliterates the Cyrillic and shows people what Russian sounds like. Maybe someone will be inspired to learn the Cyrillic alphabet, the way I did when I was a kid.

WOW! I didn't notice that there was a standard format for non-English books... but, I confess, it's tremendously awful!!! Why to begin with a parenthese? They have been devised to make a hyatus BETWEEN two statements... I cannot being anything with a parenthese. Anyway I'll conform to what others did, but surely (IMHO) they didn't it nice. Leo the Geometer

You changed the target of this redirect to Leo (mathematician). As there is no article there, that made the redirect liable to speedy deletion as "redirect to a non-existent page", so I have changed it back, and the same for Leon the Geometer. If you were thinking of changing the title of Leo the Mathematician, better to do that first before altering the redirects; but I don't think that title change would be an improvement. Admittedly, "Leo (mathematician)" is the usual form of disambiguation we use to distinguish a footballer from a singer, but in this case the guy was known as Λέων ὁ Μαθηματικός and the article title is a translation of that.
