List vs Start

I have done a quick first run for WikiProject Indigenous peoples of Australia and generally trust my judgment, I just had a glance at the bot reports, and there are some over-under ratings for both class & importance, not a lot though IMO. Formatting nav box

Do you know how to format a nav box, i.e. the nav box in an article will not be collapsed always, the nav box will be always fully displayed. I am trying to format the Template:Bridges in Slovenia for the article Dragon Bridge, so that the nav box is always displayed fully, not condensed, but the format is not working. Magnoli*

G'day mate,

Be advised that "magnoliid", "Magnoliophyta", "Magnoliopsida", "Magnoliidae", "Magnoliales", "Magnoliaceae", "Magnolioideae" and "Magnolia" do not all refer to the same thing. They are distinct taxa/clades at different ranks. Specifically, Myrtales may be Magnoliophyta and even Magnoliopsida, but they are most definitely not magnoliids. Hesperian 03:15, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Competitive Foods Australia

You might want to reassess the "low" rating of the article, as CFA is the largest operator of restaurants in the country. They have been involved in many legal cases, including some with BK and KFC, that have been precedent setting in Australia. They are also the official sponsors of several professional sports teams through their franchises.

Austral Society/Austral Halls

Thanks for adding the Clubs category tag to the Austral Society. I hadn't yet researched exactly what tag was appropriate. I am looking to add more info on 'Austral Halls around Australia' - but am still researching as I can find very few web references, except to a few scattered mentions of events in a few such halls. I personally remember using the one in Bundaberg, but it was later demolished to form a car yard - as many such halls were! I still don't know for sure if every Austral Hall was built by/for the Austral Society, or even if such a list is easily accessible. I may have to do the basic hard footslog and visit the various historical archives in Toowoomba, next time I am up that way for a while. Any hints/tips will be appreciated. McLean Family (rugby footballers)

Hi Graham. Noticed you removed the categorisation on the Redirects for Doug McLean snr and Doug McLean jnr. Perhaps there's policy on this matter but the reason for the categorisation is so that the individuals appear on the list Category:Dual code rugby internationals rather than having the family article name McLean Family (rugby footballers) which of course wouldn't be right. I know I could split the articles out but in my view part of their notability is the extraordinary family Wallaby connection and the family article makes this clearer. Lazy articles should be deleted

Hi Grahame. I have a question about deletion of articles. I often see a pattern where an article is listed for deletion, as nothing in the article demonstrates notability, and the article carries no reliable references from mainstream sources to establish notability. Then, in the deletion discussion, someone pops up and says the subject is listed in various newspapers. So the article gets a "keep" vote. But the article then lies idle, and never gets updated with references. An example is Tallangatta & District Football League. A tag was added in April for references to be added. None were. The article got a "keep" vote. References still not added. There's nothing verifiable in the article, and despite the facts being challenged, it survives. Shouldn't the author of an article be responsible for referencing? Many times, people in the delete discussions say those voting to delete an article should look for references before voting. Shouldn't it be possible to delete an unreferenced article? Regards, --Lester 06:46, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Sorry to bring this up again. I'd like to contest the decision to allow the article Tallangatta & District Football League to be kept. Do you know the process to get this article reviewed? I read Wikipedia:Deletion review, but that seems to be focused on getting deleted articles undeleted. Rail transport in Germany project

Hi, A couple of months back, I arranged for a new project "Rail transport in Germany" to be set up and wondered if you'd like to join. I'm translating and adding articles regularly, but also trying to bring a bit of consistency and coherence to the categories and naming conventions etc. Would you be interested in joining? No pressure to do anything other than what you feel able to contribute.

Marrickville Greens page

Hi Graeme, I'm not sure where I am meant to put my objection to your suggestion that the entry for Marrickville Greens be deleted. I'll place it here as well as the other places I've put it.

I think the Marrickville Greens should remain an entry on Wikipedia for the following reasons.

The Greens are a decentralised party. Each local group tends to be run campaigns (including non-electoral campaigns) as a separate entity with a lot more autonomy than the Labor and Liberal parties. I don't see why Wikipedia should be limited to entries on state and national parties. People may well be interested in local branches. I've seen whole books related to the Glebe Branch of the ALP for example. I've also seen far more esoteric subjects on Wikipedia. I thought Wikipedia is a live process with room to expand where the community wants to take it. The No Aircraft Noise Party has its own page - one can argue that they are far smaller and less consequential than the Marrickville Greens. The Marrickville by-election has its own wikipedia page - surely one of the main protagonists should have a page. The page provides useful information, backed with references, for the 80,000 people who live in Marrickville are and might want information on, and a history of the local Greens Party, as well as that info for people outside the area. It would seem I could have an entry on myself as a Greens Councillor on Marrickville Council, but the group itself doesn't warrant an entry? That seems arbitrary and if anything the reverse should be the case. I don't think I warrant a page on Wikipedia, but I think the local group does. If someone is reading about Marrickville Council on Wikipedia and it mentions The Greens, don't you think it is more appropriate to be able to link to the local group directly, rather than having a link the The Greens NSW or Australian Greens, which may not provide as useful information.

For all those reasons I do not think it should be deleted. Indeed I think interesting local groups/branches, should be encouraged to put information up. I'd certainly be interested to read it.

National Curriculum (Australia) - Stub or Start?

I think the classification of this article as a Stub is erroneous under the definition [3] at WikiProject Australia's page. The definition and examples for both Stub and Start would suggest that this article is a Start quality article. A comparison with, for example, Broken Hill railway line, New South Wales which has been classified as 'Start', would suggest that that would be an appropriate classification also. Tagging of Amazon Eve

I recently removed a speedy delete tag that you had placed on Amazon Eve. I do not think that Amazon Eve fits any of the speedy deletion criteria because Being the "worlds tallest model" is a claim of significance. Note that the bar for an a7 speedy is lower than notability. Note also that if it is "not obvious" whether something is a claim or not, an A7 is probably out, A7 should be clear cut, IMO. German railway articles

Grahamec, thank you for all the work you do on railway articles. I see you renamed the Höllentalbahn in the Black Forest to Höllen Valley Railway and then changed it back, as it caused problems. I would be interested to know what problems you were referring to. Usually XXXtalbahn can be sensibly translated as XXX Valley Railway because the valley is named after a river XXX. This is common naming practice in English-speaking countries. But I agree that Höllentalbahn is more problematic because the valley's name is not derived from a river but (presumably) from the word for hell: "Hölle". Should we call it "Hell Valley Railway"? I'm not sure. Or "Hölle Valley Railway" dropping the "n" which is only a link letter? In one case this could be appropriate because there is a village called Hölle after which the line is named. Dammit. :) Hey, Bermicourt, correct me if I'm wrong but unless you have in between found a source, it is still only your idea that line and valley were named after the village, and not village and line after the valley. No surprises here when I point out that the name is Höllental, not Hölletal, as I have just redundantly done at your site (sorry 'bout that). And what's with dropping a letter from a name in a foreign language just because it's "just a link letter", whatever this is supposed to mean? Still don't think you should be making up names. Translate it (hell valley, which hardly anybody will be looking for) or don't (Höllental is the name, after all), but don't go creating new names. Not here on WP. On the same note, just deciding something shall get a name? Hm. Oh, and Graham - listen to Bermicourt in matters of the river. There's no river named Hölle in any of those valleys. There's the Selbitz in Franconia, the Schwarza in Austria, and the Rotbach in the Black Forest. German railways - great work!

Grahamec, thank you for your great work on German railways. It's encouraging to have such a profilic author/translator on board! One of the subtler aspects of the naming convention which I thought I'd flag up is that when a railway is just named after the places it links, we use the Wiki convention of lower case i.e. XXX–YYY railway with a long dash in between. If the railway has a 'proper name', usually after the valley it's in, then we use upper case i.e. XXX Valley Railway. In addition, and this is where it gets very subtle (!) if the railway is also the name of the operating company (often the case with early railways) we use upper case where you'd expect to see lower i.e. XXX-YYY Railway and a short dash. Didn't mean to get you involved into something you don't feel like getting involved into. The convention is one thing, but there's a reason behind my issue with the Höllental, or Höllen Valley, and the railroad respectively. It's all here [7] in case you want to take a closer look. Fun thing, I just got an e-mail from the administration where one of the valley's located. Says that the name might be derived from the celtic "hel", as a term for ragged landscapes. Category:Australian academic journals

Hi, I see you created this category. However, a while ago there was a (limited) discussion about categorizing academic journals by country and it was decided to do away with these cats. Although for some journals it may be straightforward, for the great majority of academic journals it is not. Science is nowadays a very international undertaking and even journals that have the name of a country in their name (such as the Australian journals that you put into this category) will have people from other countries on their editorial boards. If they are published by a commercial publisher, that may at some point merge with another one, based in another country. So even with such journals it will not always be easy to say how it should be categorized according to country. (In fact, the Australian Journal of Entomology is a case in point: it is published by a US-based publisher). If you then take journals such as the one that I edit (Dutch editor, based in France, published by a publisher that is based in the UK but with offices in many other countries and recently merged with a US company), it is basically impossible to say to which country they should be categorized. If you agree, you could remove the categorization from the 3 journals that are currently so tagged and this category will then be deleted automatically after a while. • The problem is that this kind of categorization is meaningless for almost all journals. And as I explained above, it is not even unambiguous for the three journals concerned, as they are published by companies based in the US and UK. The whole point is that nowadays science is never done on a national basis any more, it is always international. I don't know whether this is the case for some journals with the name "Australian" in the title, but many journals that used to be named "British" have changed this (BMJ is an example) and other "British" journals have editors of other nationalities based in other countries. Even though they have "British" in their names, under these conditions it would be strange to categorize them as "British journal". When we still had the categories "British academic journals" and "American academic journals", journals publisehd by Blackwell would be categorized as British and those published by Wiley as American. This would mean that two of the "Australian" journals would actually have to be re-categorized or categorized in more than one national category. And if one then gets, say, a New Zealand editor, would we then add a third national cat? • Well, I just checked "History", and its scope specifically includes the Asia-Pacific region and even modern Europe... I have no strong opinion on the Australia project tags. Some people tag some journals with a "project Chicago" tag for no other reason than that the journals (on a host of different topics) are published by the University of Chicago Press... Russian embassy in Canberra

Hi Graham, you took this photo - File:Russian Embassy Canberra.jpg - I am currently discussing various projects with the Russian embassy in Canberra, in trying to recruit them to provide materials for articles such as photos of previous ambassadors to Australia from Soviet Union and Russia for User:Russavia/Australia, and which I hope will turn into far wider co-operation with them in trying to recruit them to push Russian foreign affairs and other organisations to release materials under CC, and perhaps enter into archive agreements with Commons. There is interest there from them in helping me to develop articles such as Australia–Russia relations (which I expanded a few months back). Anyway, in an email I am going to write shortly to them in Canberra, I am going to request that a Wikipedian be organised access to their compounds in Canberra (the embassy, trade mission, etc) in order to take photos, and perhaps of current ambassador, etc. If I put this to them, and they agree, would there be any interest from you in taking up this small assignment? I am a German user living in Frankfurt am Main, interested in railways and (co-)author of a lot of articles on railway lines and railway history in the vincinity within de-Wikipedia. I just redid the Frankfurt-Hanau Railway. Even so the translation is excellent a few "mistakes" did happen (which I put right) and I added a few remarks for English speaking users which a German user (perhaps) would now. Hi there. I am helping to go through the backlog of articles with no sources. Did you creat the above article? It seems like the subject could be notable, but I cannot find where any of his works are in print. Also, though he has had a long, and apparently successful, career in the arts, I am not sure that alone passes WP:NOTE, especially if not sourced or unverifiable. I noted, after your edit with the tags, that you are interested in photography. I've been searching for copyright-free photos of Plomley, without success. I note that the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in Launceton, which keeps his collections, has several. Anyone you could contact them to see if they would (it seems possible from their wording) waive their rights in the good cause of having Plomley's article on wiki? If this is too much of a bother, ignore it. I dropped them a note apropos, but know absolutely nothing about copyright on wikipedia or how to upload photos were that possible in this case. Trier Hauptbahnhof

Grahame, I note the changes you have made to the names of the (presently non existent) railway line articles linked from the infobox for this article, and your rationale for your changes. However, I chose the original names after some careful thought.

The problem is that there is both a de:Saarstrecke and a de:Saarbahn, and a de:Moselstrecke and a de:Moselbahn. Meanwhile, the de:Obermoselstrecke page redirects to de:Bahnstrecke Thionville–Trier, so Thionville–Trier railway is probably the correct name for the equivalent en.wiki page (when it is eventually created).

We can probably go with your translation of de:Eifelstrecke, though.

I agree that railway line is better than route. But neither of them really fits the en.wiki conventions, so I also agree with you as to what is "best". (FWIW, I think that the format Schmidtstadt–Johannstadt railway is usually the best naming choice for an en.wiki article about a railway, even if the proper de language name of the line is König Johannsbahn or whatever.) Viaducts

Hello Grahame! Thank you for frequently returning to the Göltzschtalbrücke article to make corrections. I see you started the Elster Valley Viaduct article a while ago and would like to conform both article names to one another.

In a search for what Wikipedia has to say about this, I found a the WikiProject Germany naming convention (Group B) to specifically explain how Weihetalbrücke appears as Weihe Valley Bridge on Wikipedia. In a similar vein, conforming both our articles to this would mean:

• Elster Valley Viaduct should be moved to Elster Valley Bridge
• Göltzschtalbrücke should be moved to Göltzsch Valley Bridge

Since I also see that the word Viaduct is frequently used in articles describing railways, this may imply competing style guide naming conventions (e.g. between the WikiProjects of Germany and Railways or Engineering), I would like to hear your thoughts on this proposal to move both articles.
