Crisco, thanks for your help with the mouse image. You mentioned the article Tree elsewhere in passing and I remember the episode vividly. The article became so covered with "citation needed" tags that it looked like a well-decorated Christmas tree. I didn't dare touch it for fear that more tags would appear, nevertheless, when months later normality was restored, the article was little changed from my original version that caused all the fuss in the first place. I've actually done a bit of work on Tree, filling in gaps and supplying references, and nobody's objected at my removal of most of the Christmas baubles. There are still a few holes but most of it is pretty much GA-worthy. Maybe a few people might even join in, in a relaxed semi-retired sort of way? That would be nice. WikiCup 2014 August newsletter

The final of the 2014 WikiCup begins in a few short minutes! Our eight finalists are listed below, along with their placement in Round 4:

1. Godot13 (submissions), a WikiCup newcomer, finished top of Pool A and was the round's highest scorer. Godot is a featured picture specialist, claiming large numbers of points due to high-quality scans of historical documents, especially banknotes.
2. Casliber (submissions) is a WikiCup veteran, having been a finalist every year since 2010. In the semi-final, he was Pool B's highest scorer. Cas's points primarily come from articles on the natural sciences.
3. Czar (submissions) was Pool A's runner-up. Czar's points come mostly from content related to independent video games, including both articles and topics.
4. Adam Cuerden (submissions) was Pool B's runner-up. Another featured picture specialist, many of Adam's points come from the restoration of historical media. He has been a WikiCup finalist twice before.
5. Cwmhiraeth (submissions) won the WikiCup in 2012 and 2013, and enters this final as the first wildcard. She focuses on biology-related articles, and has worked on several high-importance articles.
6. 12george1 (submissions) is the second wildcard. George's points come primarily from meteorology-related articles. This year and last year, George was the first person in the competition to score.
7. Sturmvogel 66 (submissions), the third wildcard, was the 2010 champion and a finalist last year. His writes mostly on military history, especially naval history.
8. Bloom6132 (submissions), the fourth and final wildcard, has participated in previous WikiCups, but not reached any finals. Bloom's points are mostly thanks to did you knows, featured lists and good articles related to sport and national symbols.

We say goodbye to this year's semi-finalists. Matty.007 (submissions), ThaddeusB (submissions), WikiRedactor (submissions), Figureskatingfan (submissions), Yellow Evan (submissions), Prism (submissions) and Cloudz679 (submissions) have all performed well to reach this stage of the competition, and we hope they will all be joining us again next year.

There are two upcoming competitions unrelated to the WikiCup which may be of interest to those who receive this newsletter. The Stub Contest will run through September, and revolves around expanding stub articles, especially high-importance or old stubs. In addition, a proposal has been made for a new competition, the GA Cup, which the organisers plan to run next year. This competition is based on the WikiCup and aims to reduce the good article review backlog.

There is now a thread for brainstorming on how next year's WikiCup competition should work. Please come along and share your thoughts- What works? What doesn't work? What needs changing? Signups for next year's competition will be open soon; we will be in touch. If, at this stage of the competition, you are keen to help the with the WikiCup, please do what you can to participate in review processes. Our finalists will find things much easier if the backlogs at good article candidates, featured article candidates, featured picture candidates and the rest are kept at a minimum. A small request for help

Hello, I am interested in getting more involved in the GA review process. I tried asking for a mentor here but no one has responded. I'm reaching out to you, not to ask you to take on the gargantuan task of being a mentor in general, but to take a peek over my shoulder on a specific review.

I decided to start with Sebaceous_gland, and I have started my review here. So far, it is going well.

I picked you, because I think the article structure was modeled on Parathyroid gland. If it wasn't it is quite a coincidence, but the main point is that there is quite a bit of commonality in the subject manner, and you reviewed that article, so I think you could make sure I'm crossing my t's and dotting my i's without too much effort.

I started with a prose review, the editor was very receptive to the comments, so now I want to walk through the general criteria formally (I did informally, and it went well). I'll be doing that shortly.

I don't yet have Jstor access, which concerns me because I would like to check every single reference. Can you tell me if that is considered a requirement?--S Philbrick(Talk) 14:48, 1 September 2014 (UTC)

It looks to me as if you are doing an excellent job and I am pleased to see you have taken on an article that has waited a long time for a reviewer. As to checking the sources, the criterion states "it provides in-line citations from reliable sources for direct quotations, statistics, published opinion, counter-intuitive or controversial statements that are challenged or likely to be challenged, and contentious material relating to living persons — science-based articles should follow the scientific citation guidelines". I do not believe this means you need to check all the sources, in fact, checking them all would be a very onerous task and would likely deter potential reviewers. However, spot-checking some is a good idea and gives you a chance to check for copyright issues.

It is quite a good idea to look at GAs or FAs on similar subjects in order to see if there are any glaring omissions in the article you are reviewing. GAs don't need to provide comprehensive coverage but they should not leave out any main aspects. When you have completed your review, the GA instructions are helpful in understanding how to wind up the process, but if you have any difficulty, feel free to ask. Thanks for the feedback. I did deliberately choose one of the oldest articles in the list. Even if I had JStor, I agree that I might not want to check every single reference. A number did have a free version online, and I did check several of those. I do a fair amount of work in copyright areas, and think I've developed a sixth sense for potential issues. I didn't see any red flags, but I did check some of the references to make sure.

I did look at Parathyroid gland which is a GA (as you know :) and seemed to have a parallel approach to the structure, so that left me with some comfort. I did find one area I felt deserved some coverage and I am gratified that the editor agreed and added it.

Question about a Sept 4th DYK nomination

I'm still a bit confused over how the DYKs work. I nominated the American paddlefish article after it received GA status on Sept 4. See here [1]. I may be mistaken, but it appears articles nominated after that date have been reviewed and featured. Does that mean the paddlefish article will not be a DYK feature? There is a considerable backlog at DYK with some nominations being reviewed the same day and others waiting a month or more. Even after review it may be some time before it appears on the front page, but as a GA it automatically qualifies. Mmm. We have 66 peer-reviewed papers out of 138 refs. If only PRPs are allowed then clearly we have a major rewrite job, so I think we have to say quite plainly that PRPs aren't needed for everything: for instance, about the wearing of rodent fur or the recommended ways to manage the risk of rodent-borne diseases, the kind of sources we used are entirely appropriate. The tone that was used - these were bad, so is the whole article - is in my view distinctly inappropriate, as it casts unproven aspersions rather than giving us specific issues to fix. Perhaps between us we can find an acceptable way to say so. Meanwhile, are there any items you'd like me to have a go at? Chiswick Chap (talk) 10:51, 29 September 2014 (UTC)

I agree with what you say. I have queried the peer-reviewed matter at his talk page. You are welcome to respond to any of his points as you think fit. The only thing that might be insuperable is his attitude to the article. I am currently trying to juggle a number of different aspects of Wikipedia which have all arrived on my plate at one time. As you can see it is about a family, and since you are much more experienced in articles about the higher levels of classification, I would be grateful if you could suggest an outline for this article. Once I have this "skeleton", it would be far more easier to accomplish this task. Of course, I can't be really regular at it, but it is a long-term goal. You may help here if you like. I don't really know more than you about articles on higher level groups. In the case of Canidae I accepted the structure that was already there. Looking around at some of the other mammal families, they seem to be largely laid out in the same way as Bovidae is, with Evolution, Characteristics and Classification as the main sections. Other sections such as Behaviour (Otariidae) and Life history (Phocidae) are optional extras. Plenty of scope for improvement in most of them I should say. GA Cup -Round 1 Newsletter

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 1 As we move into the middle of Round 1, we wanted to report some of the lessons we've learned thus far, as well as announce a major rule change going into Round 2, which begins November 1. Remember, sign-ups for this year's Cup ends on September 15. Thus far, we're very happy with the results of the competition. One of our major goals, reducing the long backlog at GAN, is well on the way to being accomplished, mostly due to the enthusiastic efforts of Jonas Vinther, who has earned over 250 points. Over 80 reviews have been made thus far. Thank you all for your efforts and for your part in making the GA Cup a success. However, this is the inaugural year of the GA Cup, so there have been some unforeseen circumstances that have come up. One has been a glaring inadequacy with the rules, which the judges feel makes the competition unfair. As a result, there will be a major change in the rules, starting at the beginning of Round 2: Your review must provide feedback/suggestions for improvement, and then you must wait until the nominator has responded and all issues/suggestions have been resolved before you can pass the article. Failure to follow this rule will result in disqualification. What this means is that you must provide some feedback to the article's nominator, and must wait for him or her to respond before passing the article. If the nominator has not responded in the standard 7 days, you can fail the article. We're instituting this rule change to prevent the possibility of competitors passing articles for the sake of passing articles (or failing them) and to gain more points. We believe that the change will make it more fair to all competitors in the GA Cup. Also, in case you haven't noticed, we increased the "guarantee" for Round 2 to 25 participants. The exact number will be decided in the near future. We thank your for your participation, and for your flexibility and understanding as we learn what works and what doesn't work in this competition. If I may chime in here, as I have this page on my watchlist, the length of an article depends entirely on the topic. For example, if little is known about a species of animal, little can be written about it here. But that article seems quite a complex issue, and I'm sure much more has been written about it, so I think it fails in the broad coverage criteria. FunkMonk (talk) 19:04, 30 October 2014 (UTC)

GA question

I was wondering if I could bother you a bit. I was wondering if you could take a quick look at this article and tell me how far you think it is from a GA. I'm trying to identify GA candidates to recommend for Education Program students, to encourage people who are really keen, maybe try and hook them into Wikipedia. But I'm too much of a plant editor, and I have stared at far too many of these wasp articles to be objective any more. So I thought I'd try picking the brain of an invert specialist. Just a quick look would be more than enough.

I have had a look at the article. I think it looks pretty comprehensive and covers the main topics of the subject. It would be nice to have more images and one of the image captions needs capitalisation. GA does not require the references to be in a particular format but the present format which shows the bare urls is not ideal. The lead should be a summary of the information in the rest of the article and should not need any references because the information will be referenced in the main text. All in all, I would say the article is not far off GA but needs some tidying up.

Megachile campanulae

You probably have a lot of other things to be working on, but if you have a moment... I started this article as a DYK (my first) a while back and have been trying to bring it up to GA status (my first). It is nearly there. Any feedback would be appreciated. —Gaff ^ταλκ 07:30, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

I had a look at the article. You obviously know a lot more about bees than you do about botany! I would think the article is about ready for nomination at GAN. There are a few odd expressions that struck me such as "Natively endemic" and the use of the word "hibernation" in connection with the pupal state, but a GA reviewer is likely to bring these up anyway. A rather high proportion of the article is about Megachile, or solitary bees in general, rather than specifically about Megachile campanulae. Do you know if insects actually hibernate? The articles here are vague on the topic, but hibernation seems specific to endotherms. Can I refer to it as diapause? The googlebooks reference in the article is not working for me. For now, the article has been rewritten to read simply "overwinter". —Gaff ^ταλκ 14:31, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

Queen wasps hibernate in winter while the workers die, ladybirds hibernate and I guess other insects do too. However, overwintering as a pupa is not called hibernation (I think). In your instance, I would have thought "overwinter" would be fine. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 18:53, 31 October 2014 (UTC)

GA Cup - Round 2

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 2 Greetings, GA Cup competitors! Wednesday saw the end of Round 1. Jaguar took out Round 1 with an amazing score of 238. In a tight race for second, Peacemaker67 and Ritchie333 finished second and third with 152 and 141 points, respectively. Two users have scored the maximum five bonus points for article length (60,000 characters+). Anotherclown reviewed Spanish conquest of Yucatán (77,350 characters) and MrWooHoo reviewed Communist Party of China (76,740 characters). The longest review was by Bilorv who reviewed Caldas da Rainha. The review was approximately 22,400 characters which earned s/he two bonus points (20, 000 - 29, 999 characters). In Round 1, 117 reviews were completed, making the first round of the GA Cup a success! A total of 86 articles were removed from the backlog during the month of October! We hope to see all remaining users fighting it out in Round 2 so we can lower the backlog as much as possible. To qualify for the second round, one completed review was needed, which 28 users accomplished. Participants have been randomly put into 7 pools of 4; the top 2 in each pool will move onto Round 3. There will also be one wildcard. This means that the participant who comes in 15th place (all pools combined) will also move on. Round 2 will start on November 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on November 29 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 2 and the pools can be found here Also, remember that a major rule change will go into affect starting on November 1, which marks the beginning of Round Two. Round 1 displayed a weakness in the rules, which we are correcting with this new rule. We believe that this change will make the competition more inherently fair. The new rule is: Your review must provide feedback/suggestions for improvement, and then you must wait until the nominator has responded and all issues/suggestions have been resolved before you can pass the article. Rambler

Hi Cwmhiraeth. Don't know if you're a rambler or folk music lover, but on the off chance I thought I'd ask your opinion of The Manchester Rambler which I've just written, mainly out of surprise that there wasn't even a stub for it. I think I've said most of what I thought an article on the subject should so perhaps I'll pop it in for GA on the off-chance. Or maybe you could give me a hand with a DYK, my heart always sinks at that process. While looking for cover versions just now, I've played the MacColl/Seeger version three times! I would suggest that you remove it for now to a subpage of that editor's user page and explain carefully what you have done as a temporary measure. Although the text is referenced and literate, it needs a bit of work and condensing to get it to the FAC style and standard. Better not to have to do that in a live FAC, but to work with the the editor in a sandbox environment out of the direct line of fire. WikiCup 2014: The results

This was Godot13's first WikiCup competition and, over the 10 months of the competition, he has produced (among other contributions) two featured lists and an incredible 292 featured pictures, including architectural photographs and scans of historical documents. Why did you revert my edit?

I reverted them because the MOS states that well-known geographical places, in this case United States and Mexico, should not be linked. But to tell the truth, I have just been granted rollback permissions, you had made two edits that contravened the MOS guidelines and I wanted to see how the rollback process worked. Could you help Cloud?

The article on Cloud is in pretty desperate need of reorganization and work. After Tree, Desert, and Sea this should be relatively minor in terms of amount of work needed. A user started a GA review and the main contributor is floating about requesting help. I'd like to expedite its repair, but I don't want to be ineligible to pass it. I think my knowledge of meteorology is too low to really get involved in this long and technical article. It is rather different from Sea because we treated that as a general topic with a few technical aspects whereas Cloud is altogether technical with masses of physics and jargon, the precise meaning of which I do not understand. I can see that parts of it are poorly referenced. If you feel it has a long way to go to fulfil the GA criteria, you could always fail it and it can then be renominated when it has been improved. Copyright checks when performing AfC reviews

Hello Cwmhiraeth. This message is part of a mass mailing to people who appear active in reviewing articles for creation submissions. First of all, thank you for taking part in this important work! I'm sorry this message is a form letter – it really was the only way I could think of to covey the issue economically. Of course, this also means that I have not looked to see whether the matter is applicable to you in particular.

The issue is in rather large numbers of copyright violations ("copyvios") making their way through AfC reviews without being detected (even when easy to check, and even when hallmarks of copyvios in the text that should have invited a check, were glaring). A second issue is the correct method of dealing with them when discovered.

If you don't do so already, I'd like to ask for your to help with this problem by taking on the practice of performing a copyvio check as the first step in any AfC review. The most basic method is to simply copy a unique but small portion of text from the draft body and run it through a search engine in quotation marks. Trying this from two different paragraphs is recommended. (If you have any question about whether the text was copied from the draft, rather than the other way around (a "backwards copyvio"), the Wayback Machine is very useful for sussing that out.)

If you do find a copyright violation, please do not decline the draft on that basis. Copyright violations need to be dealt with immediately as they may harm those whose content is being used and expose Wikipedia to potential legal liability. If the draft is substantially a copyvio, and there's no non-infringing version to revert to, please mark the page for speedy deletion right away using {{db-g12|url=URL of source}}. If there is an assertion of permission, please replace the draft article's content with {{subst:copyvio|url=URL of source}}.

Some of the more obvious indicia of a copyvio are use of the first person ("we/our/us..."), phrases like "this site", or apparent artifacts of content written for somewhere else ("top", "go to top", "next page", "click here", use of smartquotes, etc.); inappropriate tone of voice, such as an overly informal tone or a very slanted marketing voice with weasel words; including intellectual property symbols (™,®); and blocks of text being added all at once in a finished form with no misspellings or other errors.

Question about a GA nom

Back in June, I nominated Gabor B. Racz for GA. The article passed scrutiny when it was initially assessed, and it was also a DYK, but I can't seem to get it reviewed for GA. Other articles have been reviewed that were nominated much later. Is there something I should be doing that I'm not? Oh, and I also wanted to mention that I'm still looking for more RS so I can help expand Synodus intermidius, but not having much luck. The species has received limited attention, but I haven't given up. I will be in the U.S. at the end of December, and will have access to quite a few more references then. People take up reviews on whim. In the Biology and Medicine section I guess they tend to prefer organisms to people, and someone will take yours on in the end. If nobody has taken it on by the end of the month, I will do so. With regard to our fish, if there is little information available in the literature we can go forward with what we have got. "Comprehensive" at FAC means "as comprehensive as possible with regard to the sources available" and "covering the main aspects of the topic" in GAN must be similar. If nobody has studied some aspect, we can't include it (though to say it is little studied would I suppose be OR unless one found a source that stated this). 1) Have tidied up the article a little: the classifications of animal uses seem to overlap. Perhaps the picture will become clearer with more examples from Haddock, Herring et al.

2) How much do you think we should do on the mechanisms/chemistry? It would be possible to include reaction equations, pictures of molecules etc.

3) History too probably needs extending, and it inevitably overlaps/blends into current knowledge, specially of the chemistry. Perhaps we need also to find some early reports of bioluminescence (phosphorescence?), there should be some juicy quotes in olde style somewhere.

For the moment, I am adding examples and placing bits and pieces where they best fit. Feel free to reorganise the sections, move stuff around as you see fit. The reasons that some organisms emit light is unknown or disputed which makes it more difficult to place these under the present structure. We could wait to reorganise the article until it is more complete. I shan't be adding to the mechanisms/chemistry section as I have no knowledge of the subject. History should probably not include modern research which will be covered elsewhere in the article. I am only working on this part time as I have other commitments elsewhere. However, 2 GAs and an FA that I expected to conclude during the last round of the WikiCup have now come to a conclusion. They would not have made any difference to the final result. GA Cup - Round 3

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 3 Greetings, all! We hope that all of our American GA Cup competitors had an enjoyable Thanksgiving holiday. Friday saw the end of Round 2. Two from 7 pools, plus a tie score and one wildcard (16 in all) moved onto the next round. Some pools were more competitive than others. Round 2's highest scorer was 3family6, with an impressive 255 points. Good888, who came in second place overall with 202 points, reviewed the most articles (19). The wildcard slot for Round 2 went to Jaguar. Congrats to all! Round 3 will have 15 competitors in three pools. The key to moving forward in Round 2 seemed to be reviewing articles with the longest nomination dates; almost everyone who moved forward nominated at least one article from the pink nomination box (20 points) or reviewed articles that had languished in the queue for over 5 months (18 points). The GA Cup was also used to promote a group of articles about The Boat Race, a rowing race held annually since 1856 between Oxford University and Cambridge University, on the River Thames. 17 Boat Race articles were promoted to GA in November. In Round 2, 110 reviews were completed, as compared to 117 in Round 1. The GA Cup continues to be a success. This month, we got a report from User:AmericanLemming, who maintains the GA statistics, that in October, there was a net gain of 201 articles nominated for GA. He thought that more open GANs could mean that more editors are submitting more of their articles to the GAN process. In addition, having a high-throughput of GANs means that more articles get reviewed more quickly, which reduces the frustration of potentially waiting several months to get an article reviewed. The activity in Round 2 of the GA Cup seems to bear that out. It's our hope that the competitors' enthusiasm continues in Round 3, and we can continue to make a difference in helping more editors improve their articles. For Round 3, participants have been randomly put in 3 pools of 5 contestants each; the top two in each pool progressing, as well as the top 2 of all remaining users. Round 3 will start on December 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on December 29 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 3 and the pools can be found here. There have been a couple of rules clarifications to announce. We're slightly changing the wording to the second bullet in "General rules", which now reads: You may only score points in a round for reviews which have been completed in that round. We're also including this clarification: Only reviews started during the competition are eligible. We have also lost a judge, so there are now only three judges. Good luck and remember to have fun as we move into the holiday season. It is the judges' hope that every competitor in the GA Cup has a joyous holiday season and Happy New Year. I have scanned reviews of the house that appeared in the journal Architecture (July 1984), Architectural Review (Feb 1986), The San Francisco Examiner (April 4, 1986), Progressive Architecture (June 1986), and Metropolitan Home (December 1988). WikiCup 2015 is just around the corner...

Hello everyone, and may we wish you all a happy holiday season. As you will probably already know, the 2015 WikiCup begins in the new year; there is still time to sign up. We have a few important announcements concerning the future of the WikiCup.

• We would like to announce that Josh (J Milburn) and Ed (The ed17), who have been WikiCup judges since 2009 and 2010 respectively, are stepping down. This decision has been made for a number of reasons, but the main one is time. Both Josh and Ed have found that, over the previous year, they have been unable to devote the time necessary to the WikiCup, and it is not likely that they will be able to do this in the near future. Furthermore, new people at the helm can only help to invigorate the WikiCup and keep it dynamic. Josh and Ed will still be around, and will likely be participating in the Cup this following year as competitors, which is where both started out.
• In a similar vein, we hope you will all join us in welcoming Jason (Sturmvogel 66) and Christine (Figureskatingfan), who are joining Brian (Miyagawa) to form the 2015 WikiCup judging team. Jason is a WikiCup veteran, having won in 2010 and finishing in fifth this year. Christine has participated in two WikiCups, reaching the semi-finals in both, and is responsible for the GA Cup, which she now co-runs.
• The discussions/polls concerning the next competition's rules will be closed soon, and rules changes will be made clear on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring and talk pages. While it may be impossible to please everyone, the judges will make every effort to ensure that the new rules are both fair and in the best interests of the competition, which is, first and foremost, about improving Wikipedia.

I pruned out anything that seems promotional and added the references from publications that were of higher quality (New York Times, New York Post, etc.). If you materially disagree with my edit, that is fine. But you are not meant to use the revert button to revert edits that aren't vandalism and you are not meant to leave vandalism warnings for non-vandalistic edits.

Sorry to butt in (this page is on my watchlist). Reversion is not strictly for vandalism. See WP:Revert. The IPs edit revert was not labeled as vandalism, so no template notifying the IP talk page of vandalism revert was needed. It is true that a better edit summary would have been appropriate (such as " reverting good faith edits"). Advertising one's PhD

Cwmhiraeth, here's an odd case: Special:Contributions/79.21.249.82. This new IP, whose name we can readily guess, has made 5 edits, all of them miniature facts from the same PhD thesis, supported by a link to the whole thesis posted on Commons! Ahem. Reverting all 5 would be a little 'bitey' for a new editor, but ADV and COI are evident. What to do - Welcome, delete all, and post an invitation to edit a little better? Even that is fairly drastic. Linking to the commons image of the thesis I would have thought inappropriate. It would be better if he linked to the source of the information that he put in his thesis. Wikipedia is pleased when subject experts contribute but I guess they need help in knowing how to attribute their information. Interacting with other editors is much more difficult than simply creating content, as exampled by my intervention in Sinopodophyllum‎ yesterday, which also involved a newby. Thanks for your help with Sinopodophyllum. I appreciate now that it was probably a school project but when I first got concerned with the article, the creator of the new content had had his whole input removed and I felt for him. Yes, I find all the argumentation at AfD terribly difficult. Just occasionally I see a fine article about a Norwegian poet or something, and I go and read their newspapers to find supporting quotes and translate them: then it's fun and a clean intellectual result. Actually, my new article is not copied from the website mentioned which I had not seen until CorenSearchBot brought it to my attention. It is actually based on the lead sentences in this Wikipedia article and adjusted to suit the species. That the wording is identical with the iGoTerra site is coincidental. I doubt any attribution is necessary. The lead paragraph is similar in most of my new species articles and gets enlarged later as the article expands. It initially takes the form -

GA Cup - Round 4 (Semi-Finals)

WikiProject Good Articles's 2014-15 GA Cup - Round 4 Happy New Year! We hope that all of our GA Cup competitors had an enjoyable and safe holiday season. Monday saw the end of Round 3. Eight contestants moved forward to Round 4—the top two contestants from each of Round 3's three pools and the top two participants of all remaining users. It was an exciting competition, especially towards the end. Round 3's highest scorer was Jaguar, Round 2's wildcard, with an impressive 305 points, the highest score in the GA Cup thus far. Pool B was the closest race; J_Milburn and Cwmhiraeth switched places a few times in the final hours of the competition, although J Milburn edged out Cwmhiraeth by just 9 points. Pool A was, by far, the most competitive; four out of five moved onto Round 4, and its competitors earned a cumulative 935 points and reviewed 59 articles. Ritchie333, who came in second overall with 255 points, reviewed the most articles (17). Peacemaker67 and Wizardman earned the two wildcard slots, with 184 and 154 points, respectively. Congrats to all! 114 articles were reviewed this round, as compared to 110 in Round 2 and 117 in Round 1. The key to success in Round 3, like in Round 2, was reviewing articles with the longest nomination dates; everyone who moved forward reviewed articles from the pink nomination box (20 points) or reviewed articles that had languished in the queue for over 5 months (18 points). Many of these articles had languished because their nominators had left Wikipedia and had little chance of passing to GA, so our competitors provided a great service by helping remove them from the queue. Also as in Round 2, The Boat Race articles proved to be popular review choices, with 10% of all the articles reviewed in December. We appreciate the competitors' continued enthusiasm, even during the busy holiday season. At least one competitor even reviewed articles while preparing for a holiday meal! For Round 4, participants have been randomly put in 2 pools of 4 contestants each. The top two in each pool will progress to the finals, as well as the top participant (5th place) of all remaining users. The semi-finals will start on January 1 at 0:00:01 UTC and end on January 29 at 23:59:59 UTC. Information about Round 4 and the pools can be found here. We received some excellent feedback about how to improve the GA Cup in the future, including the definition of "quickfails" and the use of pools, which we'll seriously consider as we move forward. As a result of this feedback and the experience we've gained, there will be some changes to the rules come next years GA Cup. Good luck to all our semi-finalists!
