Hi there

Hi, good to hear from you again. Things are fine, with the ProteinBoxBot being our focus at the moment! One thing I had trouble with was updating the MCB article worklist, I could get the MathBot to run but what do you do after that? Tim Vickers (talk) 17:22, 25 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

RE:Packers Project

Thanks, and thank you! The layout is a great design! The colors I picked were the official colors of the Green Bay Packers, so I figured it would only be fitting if I used those colors for the Packers Project. But again, thanks for the layout, it made the Project look so good! « Gonzo fan2007 talkcontribs 23:46, 25 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

Supposedly the official colors are #FFCC00 (Green), #213D30 (Gold) but I would be open to other sources that say otherwise, and yeah it was a lot of work just for me to make it work for WP:GNB, so I can only imagine what it was like to do it by scratch! « Gonzo fan2007 talkcontribs 23:59, 25 February 2008 (UTC)Reply
I think I'll stick with the color we have now, all the other Packers templates use these colors, so for consistency's sake Ill stick with those. And come on, you know never to cite Wikipedia as a source ;-) « Gonzo fan2007 talkcontribs 00:13, 26 February 2008 (UTC)Reply

I created a draft version of WikiProject Human Genetic History; feel free to go to it and flesh it out. No idea what to do.

Okay, I'm really not sure how to go about this. I was trying to read about something, but had trouble and found out the article had been made into a redirect. But the redirects are pretty bad. It's just a lot of dead ends with no information. I'm not sure how to proceed here, so I got a name off the admin list and am asking for help.

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Inevitable_%28Dungeons_%26_Dragons%29&redirect=no

This is the article, and anything it redirects to has no information, I'm not sure if I should try to restore the article, or merge it into some other section or what. Any help would be appreciated. Jack Cain (talk) 07:54, 17 March 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanx for the Barnstar

I'm honored. I logged in today for the first time since last year and was surprised to see that. I had stopped bothering trying to improve Cold War/espionage articles because one particular user with a political ax to grind was arbitrarily deleting or reverting my edits. When I pointed out to him that his behavior was a violation of WP policy, he thumbed his nose at me. When I sought help from Admins, I found surprising indifference. So I dropped out of WP. It's just too frustrating to see hours of work butchered in a few seconds by an ignoramus or partisan hack, with no consequent enforcement of rules.

I don't mind my contributions being edited, but I put a lot of research into them, so I would appreciate it if the edits reflected some knowledge, or desire to improve the articles, or something other than a desire to "disappear" inconvenient facts down the memory hole -- or at least did not constitute blatant policy violations. (The user in question appears to have read Orwell's 1984, and to have embraced O'Brien as his role model.) The last straw was when he agreed not to revert my edits in a particular dispute until we received third-party input, then broke his word. His editorial technique is that employed by the editors of The Great Soviet Encyclopedia in their infamous edit of the article on Lavrentii Beria.

I have thousands of historically priceless primary source documents on Cold War espionage at the Center for Security Research, all of which I am willing to donate to the commons. Their inclusion as source material could vastly improve WP's articles in this area. I would be happy to return to WP if I could find just one Admin willing to investigate charges of repeated and gross policy violations. Mark LaRochelle (talk) 21:22, 2 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

PBB directory

Not sure if you're aware of it or if it'd be useful, but a list of pages that have the PBB templates is maintained here. Mostly up to date, though it's not uncommon for the targets to be redirects (when someone moves a page from the gene symbol to the gene description, for example). Thought this might be of interest if, for example, you wanted to do some large-scale additions of the MCB template using Igor. Cheers, AndrewGNF (talk) 04:43, 11 April 2008 (UTC)Reply

Igor...what do I do?

I'm guessing I'm about to look like a fool, but...what do I do with the files I've just downloaded? I'm on a Mac and I have no clue which file I'm supposed to execute or which application I need to have. Many thanks, Girolamo Savonarola (talk) 05:06, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Can't say I see a .jar file – downloaded a .zip which the computer automatically opened for me. I've got an Igor-v0.2.0-src folder with three files (blacklist, changelog, and license) and two subfolders (resources and src). Girolamo Savonarola (talk) 05:21, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
(Sorry – was in the middle of an FAC re-review.) Okay, that helped a bit – now I've got the .jar file, but when I double-click it, I get the message Jar Launcher: The jar file "Igor-v0.2.0.jar" couldn't be launched. Check the Console for possible error messages." Strange. Girolamo Savonarola (talk) 05:45, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply
I left everything as is – was I supposed to move the file? The console message is quite concise: ===== Log file does not exist =====. Girolamo Savonarola (talk) 05:50, 18 May 2008 (UTC)Reply

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Becks logo.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:Becks logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:06, 16 June 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hostile take over?

RE: WPFood Please do not get upset, please take the time to talk with others before jumping to such conclusions. I am just trying to get a hold over relevant articles and simplify assessments.

No more no less.

--Jeremy ( Blah blah...) 19:44, 4 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

I have said I made a mistake, I have admitted I used poor wording which resulted in the misunderstanding and I never blamed the bot. What I believe is that the bot was simply doing what it was told to do, that I failed to fully grasp the level of problems with the way I tried to do things and that people should take better care when categorizing articles.

If our contributors would take the time to properly categorize their articles, this wouldn't have happened. Evidently, this is not the first time this kind of incident has occurred. The response was to blame the people who were simply trying get things done instead of addressing the underlying issue. No one has taken the lead to correct the problems: a lack of a system to insure the proper categorization of articles; provide a better, less complicated way to search out and tag articles as appropriately and a way to logically index this now massive project called Wikipedia.

Ask yourself, why was the Irish Famine categorized under Potato varieties? Why were Woodworking articles classified as Foods? This is insane, and it took this incident to make this painfully obvious to me.

Have you taken a real look at my proposal, or just dismissed it deciding I was a pompous ass? Have you considered the merits of working together to get things done? All I wanted to do was fix things that were messed up, foster a sense of community with the other foodies and make life easier for our related projects. I made mistakes, and I admitted to them while you just pointed them out and complained. As for the integrated functions of the banners, I will look to others to see if this is doable later or If I should just abandon all the work I put into it once I have established a better relationship with the projects after a cooling off period.

As they say, the road to hell is paved with good intentions.

Issues with TinucherianBot in Project Banner Tagging for WP:FOOD

Beer banner

I agree with your stand against the F&D tag, and I have also reported my disgreement with the tag. How you keeping? SilkTork *YES! 09:44, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

What will we be voting for exactly? To keep our own tag, or for the exact wording on the shared F&D tag? I'm as yet still unsure of the benfits to the articles, the general reader, or the Beer project of a shared tag with F&D. I would appreciate an explanation of the potential benefits. And, like you, I am very uncomfortable with the manner in which F&D have done this – though that in itself isn't a barrier to future collaboration.
How am I keeping? Like you, often busy. I nibble away at beer articles, though not as much as I used to. And I don't participate as much in engaging interest in beer projects as I used to. There have been comments made about the augumentative and fragmented nature of the project, and sadly it is true. Healthy debate can produce some excellent results – but not all debate is healthy! Let's hope this tagging issue can bring people together in harmony. Regards SilkTork *YES! 13:47, 7 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Relax, friend... I am not here for any edit wars... we are just having an healthy discussion here -- TinuCherian (Wanna Talk?) – 15:49, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
(outsider butting in) For what it's worth, I don't imagine that the Beer Project, which seems to be rather healthy, is likely to absorbed into the Food and Drink project anytime soon. But it might be useful for the Food Portal to know which articles related to Beer are in good shape, for possible inclusion in the portal. I remember having read that the Video Game Portal got more hits than anything else in the Video Game WikiProject, and the same might hold true for Food and Beer as well. But I don't remember any time when an active project was absorbed into another one, and, considering the popularity of beer, I have real trouble imaging that it will happen in this instance. John Carter (talk) 22:41, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Yeah, I can see how you might think that. One option, which might be able to prevent such problems in the future, might be to have the Beer banner provide automatic assessment for Food and Drink as well, thus making the additional banner redundant. If you would want me to, I could probably do the adjustments myself. But I personally don't think that Tinucherian is necessarily trying to "take over", maybe just help organize. One of his goals might be to ultimately arrange the various food projects so that they can have some degree of coordination, like the Military history project (the best example) and a few others, including Christianity. There are a few advantages to doing so for all involved, generally. It tends to make reviews easier and quicker, can in some cases bring in additional editors to help improve articles more quickly, make it easier to develop new groups, etc. Some of the projects won't need that help, probably including Beer, while others might. If that is the objective here, my guess is that the "healthier" projects will probably be basically left alone, while any potential coordination will be focused on the less healthy projects, portals, etc. That's actually what we're trying to do with the new Christianity coordinators, which include both Tinucherian and me. In that case, we actively solicited for candidates from the "descendant" projects to help coordinate those specific projects' activity, in effect trying to not fix the ones that were working, and if the Food coordinator thing ever is enacted, I think the same thing would probably happen there as well. John Carter (talk) 23:13, 8 July 2008 (UTC)Reply
Dude, I concur with John. As I had told earlier, The idea is to help Wikiprojects. If you and most of the WP:BEER members feels that it doesnt need the help of WP:F&D support and banner , let it be so... No one objects to this ! The only concern is the objection to use F&D banner in beer related articles. Having said that, We have personally experienced the gr8 advantages of intergrated banners especially in assessment and article collabration. Even after having intergated banner you still get BEER specific stats for quality and importance. Btw I am sorry that some of your actions and wordings were discussed in the WP:Council Discussion. Again iterating the fact that it was not my intention, I apologize personally if I have hurt you by my actions in any way. Stay Cool.. Happy Editing and Keep up your good work ! Beer category decision

A discussion has been opened on changes that have been made to the existing Beer category system. The changes reverse the decision made by the Project in April 2006. The changes were based on agreement by only two people, and by a discussion that took place outside the Beer Project. There may be some merit in the changes, and to prevent future conflict it is important that there is some discussion of the matter. Wikiproject.xml

Hello ClockworkSoul,

I recently tried to use your automatically generated list of WikiProjects (wikiproject.xml) for a semi-automated tool that would add articles without project assignments to relevant projects. So, basically, I let the user choose a project from a list, and need to find the corresponding banner template. Your list is really very helpful to that end, and saves a lot of work for me. However, there are also a number of issues which I wanted to let you know about.

First, there are some (minor) technical problems regarding character encoding in the file; I will post these directly on Sourceforge.

Second, the quality of the data is not as high as I hoped it was. Of course, it is difficult to generate a consistent list, given the current state of the project organization; and we definitely need to invest some effort in writing something like Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Technical standards for WikiProjects, carefully but with insistence. Still, these are some problems I ran across:

  • For some projects, no banners are listed although these certainly exist; see for example id=TAMBAYAN_PHILIPPINES (the page name is actually not accurate in the file). Another example is Wikipedia:WikiProject Metal; in this specific case, the problem may be that their banner is not in Category:WikiProject banners, I will request that.
  • In other cases, multiple non-redirect banners are listed per project (e.g. id=BIOGRAPHY). In this case, the question is, what banner should be used for tagging? For WP Biography, it's easy because I can just take the first one listed, but for id=SONGS this fails.
  • The situation is worse for projects that share their banners with a "parent" project. In this case, one would have to add a parameter to the template for tagging (e.g. {{WikiProject Australia|Sydney=yes}}). This information is currently not contained in the file. I admit that it wold be very hard to obtain this info automatically; but for adding project banners to articles, it would be crucial.

I'm not sure whether any of these can reasonably be fixed, but I thought you might be interested anyway. --B. Wolterding (talk) 17:33, 11 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Question about official things

Dear ClockworkSoul, I am writing you as a member of the WikiProject Molecular and Cellular Biology. I am working on the field of chemotaxis and some chemotaxis related articles/stubs and the figures belonging to the text are uploaded by me to the Wiki. As this activity is a very essential part of my professional life – I am a researcher of chemotactic signalling – these keywords (chemotaxis, chemokinesis, haptotaxis, chemoattractant etc.) are made by me and my group not only in English but on more languages (French, Spanish, Hungarian and German). Up to know there was no problem, but last week or so 4 of the keywords were removed withgout any massage, tags etc. from the German Wiki and when I was asking about this an endless correspondence developed, which was finished by me as I think Wiki is not for wars but for building and improving an encyclopedia. Today morning I have found that some of my figures were tagged to be removed even on the English (Spanish, French, Hungarian) Wiki by a Geman member. (All the images are made by me, there is only one where more than 50 year old photos are used or such ones where I have the right to use it.) What should I do in this case? Who should I contact in such cases? This is very kid-like, nevertheless it destroys our work. I am sorry to disturb you with such a silly thing but I think you have encountered with such problems before. Thanks for your help in advance. Best regards from, Kohlasz (talk) 06:35, 14 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Community forum

A Community forum has been set up at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Food and drink/Article guidelines for the various Food and Drink projects to develop a set of Manual of Style guidelines for use in articles under the auspices of all the related Food and Drink WikiProjects and task forces. This would be similar to the MoS guidelines for biographies or legal articles.

Please feel free to comment.

Category based Bot Tagging

Hi there, I hope you remember expressing serious concerns regarding category based WikiProject tagging by bots here. I made this FAQ list which tries to answer some of your concerns. Let me know if you have any questions . Thanks -- Tinu Cherian – 11:27, 22 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Hi friend, Let me know why are taking this discussion personal? I have explained it earlier too..I didnt even know you before the discussion. The discussion was discuss what the community thinks of Project Tagging when it overlaps the scope of another project. But this concerns me. You still consider that discussion as "initiated entirely to paint this editor in a bad light" which I completely dont understand why you think so. Since there is some misunderstanding , I appeal to you to discuss each other . Thanks -- Tinu Cherian – 07:58, 25 August 2008 (UTC)Reply

Adopted your user page template and have a question or two...

Hello Mr. Soul, I have used your template (fabulous template, btw) on my user page. I have yet to edit much of it and this is on-going.

One particular issue I am having is with the bottom section (where your "Barnstarium" is located). I've utilized it to display the states I have visited, but if you view the page you will see that the "edit" link that should be in the lower right corner of the section is actually displayed outside the section altogether.

I've pondered a solution to this but I'm not the programming expert I need to be in this case. I'd appreciate your input on this as well as your overall thoughts on the page so far.

I'm trying to learn how MediaWiki and, more specifically, Wikipedia ticks. How it does some of the things it does (templates, infoboxen, etc., etc., etc.) is fascinating to me. I only wish someone could/would box up a snapshot of Wikipedia's underlying code (the templates space, for instance) and make it available for others to poke around in on their own test sites.

Have a great day and I look forward to your response. Overboard (talk) 17:24, 24 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Greetings and quick question

Dear Mr. Soul,

We have exchenged two messages three years ago and i hope you are well.

Long story short, it has been so long since I edited anything but I would like to start again and I would like to translate the Egnlish page of Francis Bacon (painter) into Chinese which I shall be capable of doing, language wise. However, I have not found any directions regarding translating English page into another language, hence, I'm here writing on you talk page asking for help.

Thank you for your time and I hope you are still the man you were (nice and helpful).

Yours,

Uli (talk) 20:17, 3 December 2008 (UTC)UliReply

Please explain

Hi, you left an neutrality note on the Pooktre page which says "Discussion of this nomination can be found on the talk page. (December 2008)" but you haven't left discussion on the talk page as to why you feel this is so. Which makes it hard for other editors to see what it is you think is the issue. I have left a note there for you on the Pooktre talk page. Thank you for your input and time. Blackash (talk) 00:10, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

German bread consumption

Some years ago, you voiced some doubt as to wether germans can eat as much bread as the article claimed. Well, I was bored and did some research: It seems as if they eat twice as much. --83.171.183.254 (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 21:25, 9 December 2008 (UTC).Reply

Confused!

I woke up this morning and felt like I was in "Alice in Wonderland"! When we had discussed the bjcp last August, I was very impressed by you. You supported inclusion of the link, but because the consensus was to exclude it, you, without question, said, OK, we won't include it. That incident remains for me an example of how WP should work, but often does not.

I have always supported WP:RS. As virtually all editors pointed out in the August discussion, the bjcp style guideline varied from reality in the European beer world. Has that changed?

You wrote "The user Mikebe is a rabid critic of the BJCP, and in the two years that he has been editing has fought fiercely to exclude any reference to it from beer-related articles." This was written by the same ClockworkSoul from last August?

If you have been watching the beer style article, you know that two (?) users starting reverting the bjcp link several weeks after our discussion ended. They were reverted by several other editors, including me. They have since been accused of being sockpuppets (Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets/96.247.37.61 (3rd)) and trolls (Wikipedia:Wikiquette alerts#User:LouPepe and User:sgt dizzle guy). You will note that neither report was filed by me. One of them (?) has now started leaving notes on my talk page: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk%3AMikebe&diff=258450769&oldid=257671685

And finally, let's take a look at how this recent discussion on the talk page started: Template:RFCecon list You will note that the editor who posted that wrote: "Issue has been discussed at length multiple times in the past but no consensus has been reached." Is that true? As the person who made the decision that consensus had been reached, don't you find that a "bad faith" statement? He also wrote: "One external site in particular has been advocated by several editors but strongly opposed by two." Is that true? Let's see: Silktork, KillingVector, Ron Pattinson, Dunkelweizen, Stlemur and I all opposed the link. Is that two? Another bad faith statement.

Is my faith in you now misplaced? I hope not because you were one of the few editors here who didn't let POV influence their decisions. And, unfortunately, there are not many editors like that. Mikebe (talk) 10:03, 26 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I agree that WP is a wonderful concept, however, I have seen too often how it can fail. Goethean, for example, had been stalking and insulting Ron Pattinson and me for about two years and nothing was ever done about it until I contacted an administrator who looked into it (I still don't know what was done, but Goethean hasn't done anything in the beer section for several months, so I hope he's been banned). The two (or one) trolls on the beer style article have been at it since 2 Sept. and nothing has been done to them yet. When you determined that I was violating the 3rr rule, within a day you put in a user check on me. Working to improve a project shouldn't mean having to spend 50 percent of your time defending yourself or arguing with people who don't know what they are talking about.
When I first came here two years ago, I was pretty shocked by how bad some of the articles were. It wasn't a lack of information, it was inaccurate information. Much of that inaccuracy came because the writers only could read English. The bjcp was, to a great degree, responsible for and the source of that inaccurate information. That is why I have been a "rabid" critic of the bjcp. It is only since I read Kristen's message that I understand that the goal of the bjcp style guide is not to represent the real world of beer, but a simplified version for the home-brewing contests. Making their simplified version of the styles available on the Internet for anyone to read is, in my view, a big mistake. Making them available here would be even worse because WP would seem to accept them as accurate.
Anyhow. I see that I have been cleared in the user check. May I ask why you never came to me and asked why I am so critical of the bjcp? Wouldn't that have solved several problems long ago?
I know two American beer writers, both very well known in the US (AFAIK), who I met on their travels in Europe. Both of them told me that they had started contributing here but left because of constantly having to fight with people who always seemed to know better then them. The beer portal is poorer because of this. And the beer articles will never improve until people like Goethean, Philosofool and Mwalimu59 are controlled better by the administration here. Contributing should not have to feel like fighting. Mikebe (talk) 14:46, 27 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Howdy

Thanks for the comment. I've been trying to keep cool over this, I apologize if I've taken it to excess. This little edit war between Spotfixer and myself is highly unproductive and perhaps a little pathetic on both our parts. Unfortunately I don't think either one of us is going to win the other over and we'll probably just keep fighting until then. I don't know too much about the admin side of Wikipedia but is there any where the two of us could go to get a third party ruling on which version on the edits should stay? Would the Mediation Committee be an appropriate place for this? - Schrandit (talk) 05:27, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Thank you so much for that advice, I've looked over the Dispute resolution page and am optimistic for the future. - Schrandit (talk) 05:45, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Beer style page

How do I know you were referring to me? Here: Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Mikebe Secondly, you refer me to good faith, but may I remind you that I gave all my reasons for excluding the bjcp in August when we last had this very same discussion. So, I will ask you: is it good faith to write "The user Mikebe is a rabid critic of the BJCP, and in the two years that he has been editing has fought fiercely to exclude any reference to it from beer-related articles." when four months earlier I had explained quite rationally why the bjcp does not belong on an encyclopedia site?

About what I wrote: I have written at least four times that the bjcp clearly falls under WP:LINKSTOAVOID and not once has anyone contradicted me. This indicates to me that no one disagrees with this. So, I will remove the bjcp link.

When a site so clearly violates WP policies, I don't understand why there is a discussion. Either it violates it or not, and this case seems very clear to me.

Also, I want you to know that I don't dislike the bjcp, it's just that they are so clearly unsuited for an encyclopedia that is based on fact or verifiable fact. And I don't dislike you either! Mikebe (talk) 16:40, 31 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Sorry, I didn't mean that I am going to immediately delete the bjcp link. I'll wait a few days for a response from you. Mikebe (talk) 16:53, 31 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Assigned reading

I would strongly recommend that you learn other languages -- you'll probably find Dutch, German and Czech the most important for beer. Then you can learn the truth about beer instead of the fiction written in the brewers guide books. Since the bjcp guide probably uses those books as source, it proves how inaccurate they are. Once you've learned Dutch, I strongly recommend the books written by Jef van den Steen on Belgian beer. They are really excellent and cover the Trappists, abbey and geuze/kriek each in a separate book. Good luck with your exams. Mikebe (talk) 22:04, 1 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

By not learning other languages, you limit yourself pretty severely in the beer world. As I have said before the home brewers series is a very unreliable source for information about European beers, even those books written by people born in the country they are writing about. Nevertheless, the best English-language books about Belgian beer are written by a British guy named Tim Webb. He sells his books as well as some other books published by CAMRA here: http://www.booksaboutbeer.com/ Most of the CAMRA books are basically pub guides, so the information about general beer topics is somewhat limited. I have Tim's Belgian guide and there are several pages on Belgian beer styles and a bit of history which are quite good. Ron Pattinson is also a good source (though not on paper). He writes a blog about British beer styles and history here: http://barclayperkins.blogspot.com/ and he has a lot of good, solid information about European beers here: http://www.europeanbeerguide.net/#generalarticles. If you could read even a little Dutch, you could enjoy my favourite Belgian beer blog: http://blog.seniorennet.be/bierblog/ The more you learn about the history of European beers, the more your mind will open about beer and you will start to forget about such things as styles, style guides, bjcp, ratebeer, etc. Believe me. Mikebe (talk) 10:47, 2 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I forgot: thanks for putting in the google translate links on the beer style article. I had thought of that myself, but didn't know how to do it. Mikebe (talk) 10:52, 2 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
I'm sorry you don't like my "tone" but this guy is acting like a troll and you should really speak with him as well. He is not reading the discussion, only trying to defend the bjcp and ignoring the agreements made. Why don't you have a word with him? Mikebe (talk) 22:01, 3 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
