It's an article about a person with a pre-existing section titled "career outside Marvel Comics". This is a notable event in that part of his career. Is it not biographical information? Two "World Heritage Sites in Italy" templates

Template:World Heritage Sites in Italy (Val di Noto)

At a glance, these templates appear to carry the same content as Template:World Heritage Sites in Italy, so I'm wondering what subtlety I'm missing...?  Thanks for enlightenment, David Kernow (talk) 02:15, 21 May 2007 (UTC)

It's to allow highlighting of the distinct cities (see bottom of page of Caltagirone for example)...

Thanks!  Now I understand "5T" (Cinque Terre) as well as the Val di Noto reference. I incorporated the Cinque Terre and Val di Noto expansions in the main {{World Heritage Sites in Italy}} template and was about to suggest that it could now replace those above, but, looking again at the main template (and others in Category:World Heritage Sites by country templates) I was struck by the "density" of the list of sites. I began toying with an alternative design here, but it looks unavoidably unwieldy. Does the current {{World Heritage Sites in Italy}} seem "dense" to you; and, if so, do you think a version that uses only the article names rather than the official UNESCO names might improve or impair the template...?  Thanks, David (talk) 03:47, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Yes, I agree; I tried condensing the spread format, but it would still be too large. So I've amended {{World Heritage Sites in Italy}} to include the Cinque Terre and Val di Noto expansions; would it be okay to use it in place of {{World Heritage Sites in Italy (5T)}} and {{World Heritage Sites in Italy (Val di Noto)}}...?  Yours, David (talk) 12:30, 24 May 2007 (UTC)

Raffaello da Montelupo and Taddeo Zuccari

Hello Attilios! I just wanted to make sure I understood why you removed the place of birth and place of death from the introduction paragraph to the article I wrote on Raffaello da Montelupo. I know that "da Montelupo" means "from Montelupo" but not everyone will have that understanding. Also, you removed Orvieto as his place of death. Your edit description said "wikifying." Molte grazie for the explanation regarding Wikistyle for birth/death information, etc. I have been working on a number of bios, including Italian Renaissance artists, so it is good to know. (I have also been trying to add images from Wikimedia Commons to some of the Vasari artists that had no illustrations). Yes Rome is a wonderful city - I was there in 1987 (5 days), 1996 (two weeks) and 2004 (1 week). My favorite architect there is Borromini (Sant'Ivo and San Carlino alle quattre fontane). Hello again - just wanted you to know that the error you corrected regarding the "Il" preceding "Crocifissione" on the image accompanying the Taddeo Zuccari article was the result of my copying verbatim the caption from the image I pulled from Wikimedia Commons. Your edit commentary suggested a certain level of frustration with those of us who are not fluent in Italian (Aaahhh... if one could get rid of those typos from people ignoring Italian language....) I certainly did not intend to "ignore" Italian language, but was probably too inclined to to accept the grammar of the Wikimedia Commons originator (who claims "Questo utente può contribuire con un Italiano di livello intermedio"). Mountain categories

Hi Attilios. I wonder if you have seen my query on [[1]]. There seems to be a visual problem - it looks bad - if these category lists are composed of mountain names with a mixture of initial letters, ie if we have Mont Blanc under 'M' and Monte Disgrazia' under 'D'. If all Italian mountains are going to be changed like Monte Disgrazia being moved from 'M' to 'D', it might be over-complicated, messy and hard to find the peak you want (as an English speaker). At present the Mountains of Italy category list is a mess in this regard as well as being inconsistent (some are listed under the initial letter, some aren't). What do you think? Well done, you did a great work. However I think that the section with the books should be named bibliography. In fact this a list of books on the same topic not necessarily referred to in the article. Regarding Foligno I think that the abstracts at the top of the article would be as clear as possible. Yeah, I knew something was wrong but I knew you would find it and fix it! Try spelling Woolloomoolloo. One of the ls is singular, but I can never remember which. (It's a harbourside suburb of Sydney, used to be smelly old dockland with noisy pubs, now it's fashionable and priced out.) Pity, I like smelly old docklands. You can always buy a good meat pie! (which, smothered in tomato gooey sauce, is the Australian quick snack) Can you believe there actually was no article on Italian Renaissamce painting??

No problem

I too have a short list of good editors whose recent contributions I occassionally sift through. (Improving Wikipedia can be hard work, but its good to know there are other editors trying!) I have been working on sorting out the feudal structure of Italy in the 9th and 10th centuries. You can look at these pages, if you'd like: March of Carniola, March of Istria, March of Tuscany, March of Friuli, March of Verona, March of Ivrea, March of Turin, March of Montferrat, and March of Genoa. I also noticed how you've been working to move ecclesiastical history stuff from city articles to their own articles and removing Catholic POV statements from them. I have been thinking that a concerted effort needs to be made to improve the pages on church history which have apparently only grabbed the interest of very devoted Catholic editors. (I am thinking about articles on saints.) The structure of the Catholic church played such a prominent role in medieval Europe; its diocesan articles deserve to be better and more historical. Una problema

Cremona Cathedral (it's stunning!)...the description, and what my eyes inform me do not match! It is not the upper loggia which is Renaissance in style, but the upper section of the building, including its pediment. Cremona again

OK! From this distance and from the few photos I can find (Flikr) my impression is this:-

• Church begun early 1100s, west front probably complete by about 1120 and perhaps repaired changed later in the century, faced in marble and given upper galleries (which is what we would call them in English.).
• North transept, facade built late 1100s and has remained intact
• Baptistery built, say 1200, intact
• South transept facade 1200s, intact apart from two doors which have been blocked up and a marble plinth.
• two story porch around west door, 1200-1300 and incorporating earlier elements.
• The vault of the chancel, what remains seems to be 1300s
• The tower, 1200-1300s
• Loggias on either side of the main porch built in 1400s. Connecting to the Campanile.
• Facade extended in the late 1400s or early 1500s then doodahed up a bit more in the 1600s
• Baroque decoration of the interior left much of the Gothic of the 1300s intact, but transformed it with overlays of decoration.

This is my reconstruction of what might have happened. It's not just the combo of the Baptistry and the Main facade that is pretty specky, it's also the combo of South transept front and Baptistry, and the combo of Tower, North transept front and the loggias on several adjacent buildings which are part of a brilliant cityscape.

At least, that's how it looks from 8,000 miles away. Would you do some more homework to check my dates and facts, pleeease?

You have deleted images of details in high resolution that are IMPOSSIBLE to find anywhere, and I took them PERSONALLY in the museum. Art critics and historians are frequently in desperate need to see the details, and such images are incredibly precious.

Wikipedia is about comradeurship, adding, sharing and cooperating, not destroying without even understanding what you are doing; it is not about policing and imposing. You should contact those who take care to create new pages with your advice first, make a suggestion and work together. That is called civilized communication, instead of arbitrarely damaging not only someone's work, but depriving other people of the most precious information. The whole spirit of this site is to create collective intellegence, not to satisfy someone's policing ambitions.

Perhaps you should get these prinicipals first in your mind. And the POV you refered too is for controvercial subjects, well, Annunciation is not such, at least it has not been until someone like you just deletes precious knowledge without giving a thought of what he is doing.

Be considerate, it helps.

You ask me what I'm working on

I need a little break from serious things sometimes so I go somewhere entirely different and then, Oh no, it gets serious again.

There is an article Roof which seems to have been written first by an American, and then by an Australian builder. So I sorted it out, and removed all the references to Australian trade names etc. Put in lots of pictures. I thought they might be cross with me, but they loved it! Luckily, I am quite technical and i know a little bit about roofing.

It's not worth getting too pedantic about either style or citing references when you are dealing with people who are writing from thir own practical experience. A good example is Bee. There are about a million pages. They are all written by someone who obviously knows the subject in minute detail. I don't really think it matters very much if people with vast knowledge share it through this encyclopedia. It's not an academic subject! For the most part these practical people are imparting knowledge that no-one is going to argue with.

Not like some subjects. Renaissance architecture had a pic of a Russian cathedral. It has been removed. Why? It was "outrageous"!...? OK, know i'm going back to remove the outrageous statements from Ichthys. --Amandajm 14:58, 25 May 2007 (UTC)

I had a look at the article and drafted some fairly extensive advice on how the article should be made more encyclopedic, beyond the good work you were doing in bringing it into line with the conventions. I posted a little bit of that, together with some sound advice to the editor. But actually I became more concerned about copyright and sourcing issues, which I commented on more extensively. Anyway, it does look like the revert war problem has gone away. It’s a shame she’s finding it difficult to adapt to the Wikipedia working habits, and was so ready to imagine that you were acting in some destructive manner. (She must have good taste: her previous edits were to Schoenberg’s Moses and Aaron—I heard the opera for the first time last year. I admit I had some trepidation a whole opera’s worth of late Schoenberg seemed likely to be very heavy going. But I was enchanted throughout.)

The other thing to say is thank you for the barnstar. Coming from you it was really appreciated. I am sorry I didn’t reply at the time, but I was in a very introverted mood where I was finding it hard to make even simple contacts with people. Thanks again! Dear Attilios, I quite agree with you. The Van Eyck's Annunciation article needed a quick intervention and you've done the best things to do. However Gradiva is a new user and doesn't have an high level of seniority like you. Gradiva may not understand as fast as other more experienced users the importance of the guidelines and this is our attempt to give a guidance to her/him. Moreover this is not such a big deal who is right and who is not (because this is too much obvious you're right!), and that's better to clarify in our interventions that our purpose is to give only constructive criticism. And I sincerely think that a softer approach would have generated a more positive outcome of the Gradiva's unsuitable reaction. Thank you for the hug! I am down in the dumps. I have a funeral tomorrow, of a young man who has been quadriplegic for several years, but never ceased to keep everyone entertained. We will all miss him a great deal.

About Cremona, I sent you what I imagine to be the facts, but they are drawn from looking at a few photos. I can't determined if my conjectures are true or false. Thee may be something in Italian that you can read to confirm my ideas. I can't work on it properly until I know. Aspects of the upper part of the main facade are very like Sant' Agostino in Rome. I wonder if it is the same architect.

Use of "Label" column in tables

The only reason I have to use the Label column (where I typically place arbitrary numbers) is that I find it easier for the eye to find the row if editing is needed. Maybe there is a way to place a # that automaticall shifts if the list is expanded or shortened? CARAVAGGISTI 19:13, 1 June 2007 (UTC)

Is everything OK with you?

I checked out the article, read it thoroughly. I can't find any problems with the style, the grammar etc. I didn't even find any typos. This person specialises in editorial rather than contributing material. I have left a message asking for an explanation. He has another request for an explantion... but the other one definitely needs a tidy up:- "Mile End Road" was written "mile end road" for example. I think the request is nonsense. It is done, Bambino! I have expanded the architecture of the facade considerably. I had fum working out what some of your not-quite English expressions were intended to mean. I have rejigged the photos and made many of them smaller, reordering the text to fit the pix in better. I expanded the interior view, on the other hand, because we need to see the details, but the tower, Mon Dieu! it was so large that it dominated the whole page! It would even scare the birds away. I hope that you like it.

Oh, another small thing, about "narthex". A narthex is a horizontal porch or hallway right across the front of the church, and not a very common feature at all. The big internal hallway that goes across the front of St Peter's, Rome, is called the Narthex. That church of Santa Maria in Bologna is rare in having a Narthex and an Atrium, the enclosed courtyard in front of the church. There are not many atriums either. San Clemente has an atrium. Santa Maria in Cosmedin has a narthex, where that beastly Bocca della Verita thing is, and there is another very old Ch. nearby, is it S.M in Velabrio? which also has a narthex, built onto the side of an ancient Roman structure (I'm not sure if I have the right church there). Anyway, a structure that juts out from the building over the door is generally just called a porch, even if it is enormous. "Narthex" implies that it is partially enclosed. You know the transverse entrance to Palazzo Massimo? That's a narthex.

It's San Giorgio!

I raced into both Prassede and Pudenziana just before getting on the train to go to Florence. There was a yung man standing outside Santa Pudenziana who said "No! No! you cannot go in! It is im-pos-sible!" ....because someone was practising on the organ for a recital.... So I gave him the comeback "yes, but in Rome, everything is possible!" He raised his super-cool shades, gave me a look of studied boredom and said "cinque minuti". (is that right?) Anway, I looked at the fabulous mosaic, which was all I had time for! Santa Prassede is absolutely wonderful! The mosaics around the chancel arch are spectacularly Byzantine. You suddenly feel as if you've been transported to Ravenna. I think you are right about Santa Prassede having a narthex. As for my "funniness" you will perhaps explain. My neighbour always calls my son "mio bambino" and feeds him on pasta and pizza, both of which are terribly bad for him. It's done! I remember this church well. I had such a nice time there and met a very interesting woman who said she was so lucky to live in Bologna. She said that every now and then, she would pretend that she was a tourist and wander around, looking at the architecture and artworks.

As you know, I am usually fine with your edits, but the first batch you did here did have some mistakes that altered the sense, plus I don't think eg: 1456-1469 is best style - like most editors here I prefer 1456-69 (I tried to see what the manual of style says, but it rather surprisingly does not appear to cover this queation). Also I prefer to say that the dates & places of birth & death are unknown rather than just give approximate dates - I think this is more encyclopedic. Those Renaissance painters

Thank you for making all the links work so nicely! i knew I could rely on you to do it! I have put back the bit about "long and narrow" because it is about composition, and even though people can see it with their own eyes, they don't actually know it unless they are told.

As for the blinking Raphael Rooms, no-one calls them that. They are the Stanze whichich never have an accent in English books, so if you want one, you will have to do it because I will be sure to make it go the wrong direction and then maybe it will offend people. In both England and France, which I know the most about, there is very clear stylistic development. In Northern France, you can set up a series of images of cathedrals and trace a linear development between them. In the South, there were several characteristics that were not found in the North, eg some of the Cathedral (Albi for example) are very fortress-like.

In England, you have about 35 relevant very significant churches, including a few major abbeys as well as the cathedrals. (There are also a number of magnificent parish churches). But just to stick to the cathedrals for a minute-

They are enormously long, with five or six of them being as long, as the cathedral of Florence. Most of them are more than 100 metres. In every Medieval cathedral except one, (Salisbury Cathedral), the building took hundreds of years to complete. Every building stage was done in a different style, usually with no attempt whatsoever to make things match. The styles are remarkably consistent at any given date. So that I can walk around a building like Canterbury Cathedral and simply look around and say "Those two little towers are Norman, that quire is about 1170, that extension to the quire is a little later in the 12th century, that window is early 14th, the nave is late 14th and that central tower went up in the 15th century." No problem. What's more, the English loved their Gothic, and kept coming up with stunning new ideas, right to the end. The interior of King's College Chapel, 1446-1515 is mind-bogglingly beautiful.

But then we come to Italy. I've just looked at a whole lot of pics of Italian Gothic Churches. My conclusion is that style simply didn't develop in the same way. I think it would be impossible to trace a linear development as you can in England and France. I think that it is more regional and personal. There are charcteristics of Italian Gothic which are quite distinctive. One thing that seems weird to a person steeped in English Gothic is that some architectes of the period simply didn't recognise the pointed arch as being necessary for the style. They might simply chose not to use it at all, as at Orvieto. It seems really odd to have a building of that date which hasn't responded to the defining feature of the style, but, that's what happened. In Venice they do odd combos of pointed and round, that are specifically Venetian. There's a type of tracery that occurs in Vnice as well.

So, basically, I'm going to have to approach it from a different direction. I'll take a look at the Italian language article. Can you please give me the link to it?

Gothic architecture

I'm right in the throes of editting it, and I think I'm probably making myself unpopular, but there you go! I'm going to dump stuff in different articles, like I did with the Renaissance article. I've just reconstructed English Gothic architecture which was in three sections, all referring back to Gothic architecture instead of having a page on its own. Gothic is really major in England.

IRB World Rankings

Well the article was a stub and it needs expanding and more information needs to be added but what you did was remove information you didn't understand. It is English and I know it might be hard for someone whose english isn't his/her first language to understand but the thing about wikipedia is that articles can be edited and improved and not removed. Do you put it in 1090s births and 1150s deaths or 1091 births and 1155 deaths? My impulse has been to put them into the nearest year possible as I expect readers would expect that. Also do you link the dates themselves? I recently had an editor ask me about this. As I am assessing the articles, I like to make sure the appropriate birth and death categories are in place.    It's a tough one, and it's been done inconsistently. For a long time I used the exact year, like The Psychless suggests; then I was doing the decade (e.g. 1150s deaths); now I'm back to using the specific year again, when the source gives one year (e.g. born c. 1555). Another problem occurs when you know someone's age at death (common with Renaissance composers) but that gives you two possible birth years. In that case I usually do the "1550s deaths" method. I am not pleased that here constantly solid work will be deleted. There is a reason, why I prefer another script at my own article Swisttal Essig. The articles of Wikipedia will not be published at Google Earth using 50°39′30″N 6°53′12″E. However it is my interest that a respectable encyclopedia can be read also in a respectable program for satellite pictures. The coordinates for the Mennonitensiedlung Molotschna are also correct. I can give the confirmation anyhow gladly.

I hope you like this tree! it is in a front yard, in a little village, halfway up a large mountain, and is all overhung with tall Australian evergreens. It is quite tall, about 7-8 metres. I don't really know very much about this topic at all! But I have reorganised it into more logical sections and added the pictures that I took, cruising around the streets of the 'Gong last night.

Notable Citizens

Attilos, I disagree with your assessment that there are no notable citizens of Guardiagrele. If we leave aside the manner in which you summarily excise the contribution made by myself and others on the basis of what can only be subjective criteria - why do you assume that your assessment of who is notable is definitive? Isn't that just a little arrogant? Plus you are little inconsistent. The Italian version of the Guardiagrele entry contains all the 'notable citizens' which you have excised from the English version. Why do you only exercise your blue pencil in the English version? Could it be that you are merely an old tom cat patrolling 'his' territory?

Some comments about my qualifications to write about Guardiagrele. My mother is a Guardiese, I was born in Guardiagrele, My wife is a Guardiese as is my mother-in-law and father-in-law.

Now I could undo your amendment and we could play a silly game of do and undo but I won't do that. Tuff and tufa

Hi. Just a friendly question: Are you sure that when you are changing "tufa" to "tuff" that you know the rock type? Tufa is a kind of limestone; tuff is from volcanic ash. my name is István, I am and editor of the Hungarian wikipedia. I have the following question: under what circumstances (licences) can the coats of arms from www.araldicacivica.it be used? Because I saw on the Italian wikipedia that the majority of them are noted Fair use, but also some of them are noted as Public domain in Wikimedia Commons. I have the permission from the site (www.araldicacivica.it) to use them, but I don't really know if the Italian law permits the free usage of them, and in case they do, under what conditions? I'm just looking in on this as a random outsider, but I agree with Drjmarkov. Did you realise you were actually deleting information about this Firrao guy (info on who his parents were, for instance), when your edit comment only mentioned updating the category links? (later edit comments said nothing intelligible!) That's normally considered extremely bad form. If you disagree with any points of fact, then you should challenge them with requests for source citations, rather than just outright remove them. You should, in particular, always give a clear explanation for why you're removing something. Repeated removal of sections of information without any plausible explanation will force other editors into concluding that you're engaging in vandalism, and I would expect some {{uw-vandalism}} tags to start appearing on your talk page. You seem to have a long edit history — why would you want to tarnish it with vandalism? Fuzzypeg★ 23:00, 14 April 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for explaining your actions more clearly on my talk page. So, what you are saying in effect is that you removed that information because you felt it was irrelevant, yet you did not explain the reasons for that removal even after the edit was challenged, and instead merely engaged in what was essentially edit warring, stating to Drjmarkov (amidst abuse) that you had only changed formatting. If you were aware at the time that you were removing information then you were being duplicitous, marking your edit summaries as "cat sharpened" and "sthg", and then claiming at User talk:Drjmarkov that you had only made stylistic edits. If you were unaware that you had been removing information, then that shows extreme sloppiness, and an apology would now be due to Drjmarkov.

If anything like this continues, then as I said, other editors will be forced to conclude that this is vandalism. Be more careful with your edits, and tone down your accusations. In short, pull your head in. Fuzzypeg★ 01:19, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Ariccia Materials

I've been making lots of changes in the article on Ariccia (generally without signing in), but I'm not clever enough to know how to footnote references in Wikipedia. If I supplied references to you, could you footnote them?

There's lots of cool stuff about Ariccia that people don't know -- the Diana connection, the role in the Latin League, the town's place on The Grand Tour. There's an important book that has come out in the last year about Diana and Ariccia. I will get it through my university's library.

I'm not a historian, just someone who loves history and Ariccia.

Within the recent days raised a conflict between You - a very experienced editor and me - not so skilled but but with very special interests of the Catholic Hierarchy. For my great disappointment this conflict had to be settled by other editors. To argue was not my main purpose to write in Wikipedia and I always preferred to respect the other users. In this context it appears that I must ask you to look back to the article Niccolò Ridolfi, that you have created more than a year before. I think it is too short and cites no sources. Secondly , I think that you should move the article to a title that does not include non-English letters (ò). Instead of placing template messages at the top op the article, I decided to write to you. I inform you, that after 24 hrs I will start the editing process.

• First of all I am really sorry, that my personal letter is misunderstood again. About the redirect pages and everything connected with the transliteration of the names I am aware of. I just suggested it without any menace and about the names in Wikipedia worldwide there are many examples, when there are titles with diacriticals, and many without them. The moving of a page is always not an easy decision, because all the pages, linking to the moved one have to be corrected. As I have always said, I prefer the descent tone between the users and the reason I came upon exactly that page is that Niccolò Ridolfi is the next cardinal deacon of Ss Vito et Modesto church. I search information for the cardinals sorted by their titular church and from the past to the present times chronologically. So I had no personal intention finding this page at all. I was afraid, that you would decide, that I search your contributions to criticize them. I would never do such thing. So I asked you to try to correct the information, because you have created the article. About the missing sources, I am sure that this is just a mistake, but because I don't know them, I am just asking you to add them. I can't understand, why are you making big problems any time,when someone criticize you. With all the respect I have because of your experience, I have created or edited not more than 600 - 700 articles and you are the only user that every time reminds me about the Five Pillars of Wikipedia. I read usually a lot and very carefully and I have read them of course. Even though I think, that when I am going to edit something it is always better to inform its author and to allow him or her to do it personally. And because of that principle of mine I wrote the previous letter to you with clear awareness of your consequent answer, so I gave you this short term - 24 hours not as a menace, but for saving time. When I come upon a user, who is not so frequently online in Wikipedia, I usually wait more. With this long letter I tried to explain why I am doing this edit, nevertheless in those Five Pillars it is not said, that one user have to write a page-long explanation for adding a few dates and correcting some facts(for example this cardinal had been archbishop only of Florence and just administrator of the other sees). He had participated in two more conclaves and had a very "stormy life" from the early fame to the captivity and than back to the top. That is why I say that the article is short.

Birthplace

Hello Attilios, no offense but the WP:Manual of Style does not say anything about the place of birth, only on the date of birth. Even if it was in there, I think it would be a silly rule and silly rules should not be obeyed. Date and place of birth and death should be in the first sentence so readers have that information in one glance. Be bold, as the general rule of WP says. I have been in this debate before, but I really cannot imagine why date and place should not be together. So, if you don't mind I would like to put it back. Hi Attlios!

Congratualtions, on your graduation, and your job! I hope you will not be too busy to keep in touch! I am doing a lot of painting- I did a portrait of my son in his big Aussie hat, in Monet's garden, with a dreamy expression on his face. I'm quite pleased with the way it worked out.

As for the cathedrals- I might work through them in alphabetical order. On the other hand, may I will work through them in order of personal preference. Maybe I ought to check out which ones have the worst wiki pages and do those first.

I'm also thinking about writing an article similar to the one that I have already written, that deals with all the more modern cathedrals, beginnning with St Paul's which is late 17th century- Liverpool, Truro, Coventry, Westminster, Birmingham, St Chad's, and so on...

Replacement of HTML with TEX

You have recently introduced lexing errors into Centripetal force while editing to change HTML into TEX, in particular by failure to replace θ and Ω with <math>\theta</math> and <math>\Omega</math>. Aside from taking the time to check that your changes are producing readable results, it occurs to me that you might read Pros of HTML. In general, HTML in the body of text is preferable from an appearance standpoint, in my experience, making such changes to TEX inadvisable, even when done carefully. Respect Thread Conversions

I'm looking for folks to help convert Respect Threads to wiki formatting on Project Fanboy: WikiFans. Respect Threads, showcase scans of feats performed by comic book characters and have gained an audience on several comic book message boards. A few other wiki editors and myself are trying to convert them from the unprofessional look of a bunch of posts on a message board to the formatting common with WikiMedia wiki's.
