More on adminrights.js

Hi. I'm still not sure what is going on with your adminrights.js script and Firefox 4 (I'm using beta 8 now, and it's still not working for me). However, I think I've managed to come up with a workaround. Starting with a copy of User:NuclearWarfare/Mark-blocked script.js, I added code to look up admins (via the API) and mark them with a blue-green background. The result (which marks admins and blocked users in a single script) is User:Richwales/markusers.js. I should probably test it out for a while before announcing it to the general user community, but if you have time to try it, I'd be grateful for any feedback. I also added a new feature — users with "more than sysop" rights (checkuser, oversight, bureaucrat, steward) are marked with a green background in my new markusers.js script. Hmm, that seems to make one or more reasonably substantial API calls on every page load, in a way that can't be cached easily, for something that doesn't change frequently. I suppose on modern connections, the bandwidth is likely to be insignificant anyway, although it makes me feel a little awkward reading it. The script would work fine as an alternative to mine, I think, although it works on an entirely different principle. --ais523 21:36, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

highlightmyname.js

Hey Ais, I started using your name highlighter here and on Commons a couple of weeks ago, and just today, when I try to edit certain pages (I can't find any rhyme or reason to it), something in the script blanks the edit window. Disabling the script returns everything to normal. I'm using a very slightly modified version of yours, at User:Huntster/highlightmyname.js and Commons:User:Huntster/highlightmyname.js, but the suddenness of the problem is the strange part. In any case, I'm using FF 3.6.13, so I don't think its related to the above adminhighlighter issue (though who knows). — Huntster (t @ c) 07:30, 1 January 2011 (UTC)

highlightmyname2 help

Hi. I was wondering if you could take a gander at my monobook.css page and tell me why the colors aren't working? I've added the code as specified and bypassed my brower's cache (Firefox 3.6.13), but it's not showing my colors of white text with a green background, just the default red background. Catwatch to local time?

I'm using Catwatch and the only flaw that I've seen in it is that the times appear to show up in my watchlist in UTC. It is sort of disconcerting to add something to a category, make other changes and still see the catwatch generated entry as first in my watchlist. Is there any way that either the code can handle this or that I can adjust things?Naraht (talk) 13:51, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Cannot view pictures in Wikipedia

I am using Mozilla Firefox and cannot see any pictures in Wikipedia. I think I may have blocked them by accident but cannot figure out how to unblock. I have gone into Options Content under the Tools menu and everything is ticked off, Load Images automatically. Hey there, I just wanted to let you know that I've created a different version of your watchlist notifier script; it's essentially the same, but uses the secure server API rather than the standard one. The default script doesn't work unless I'm logged into both servers, which rather defeats the purpose of the secure server. :-) The secure version is here: User:Hersfold/securewatchlistnotifier.js; the only difference is the changed URLs. Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, just mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Changes to Ais523/stubtagtab.js

I've made a few small changes to your Ais523/stubtagtab.js script, which you may be interested in. In particular, I added a line to automatically remove any old {{stub}} templates, since they're being replaced anyhow. I also disabled automatic previewing, since it was slowing down my editing; you may want to consider making that a preference somehow. You can see my version at User:Wolfgang42/stubtagtab.js. Catwatch.js broken

I believe your tool catwatch.js is broken. For some reason, it loads every time I refresh my watchlist. However, lately, it has not been loading at all. I greatly rely on this tool to help me find "new" pages to add to my watchlist. However, I don't know when, or what kind of, pages are being added to the categories I am watching. I thought it might be that; adding another five tildes would be my next try after the {{nobots}} tag. (It's still reacting incorrectly; it should leave the page alone if it doesn't understand the timestamp. But at least it's easily fixable.) Too much?

Thank you so much for your effort in the maintainability of (quotation) templates. I'm not sure if https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template%3AQuote%2FSandbox&diff=631333220&oldid=631331105 is the way to go though. Quotation is already broken with inline styles (which gives problems on mobile, see quotations talk page). Shouldn't we strive for better (i.e. where you wrap the whole thing in a div to keep the block display on the outer level while making use of the margin on the inner - that's definitely better than my first attempt) rather than being pixel-identical to the old version in all non-obviously broken cases? I'm afraid that if we make quote terribly complicated again, the way to better will be harder to find. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 15:55, 27 October 2014 (UTC)

Catwatch

Hi, and thanks for building/sharing the CatWatch script. I'm running into a bug (or user error) I'm hoping you can help with. I have a long WatchedCategories list. Additions to some categories do pop up on my watchlist as they're supposed to, but inconsistently. For example, I know that there have been additions in the last two days to Category:Assignment Design Wizard assignment plans, Category:Articles created or improved during ArtAndFeminism 2015, and Category:Specialized encyclopedias. If I remove all but that one on the list, it shows up on my watchlist just fine. Right now I have all three there and only the first two are showing up. Oddly, the last, Specialist encyclopedias, is between those on the list, so formatting seems an unlikely culprit. Is the list just too long to process? WT:RFA

So, roughly speaking: I'm not arguing "viewdeleted good, buttons bad", it's just that this question of which userright is the least toxic is a question I don't have the luxury of having an opinion on, because there are so many other opinions out there ... I just have to go with the flow, or nothing will get done. Countless RfCs have shown that what most voters care most about is actual admin buttons, and from their rationales, it's clear that this has something to do with a perception of fairness and not wanting people to have power over other people unless they're well-trained and it's absolutely necessary. We don't get those complaints with viewdeleted, we get different complaints, but there's a chance something can be done about those complaints. It wouldn't bother me at all if the consensus tilts largely in your favor, and this userright is handed out rarely, though I doubt "rarely" will become "never", because some candidates fail RfA over technical issues that have nothing to do with trustworthiness or dedication (as perceived by the voters ... again, I don't have the luxury of personal opinions on much of this stuff). - Dank (push to talk) 21:20, 14 October 2015 (UTC)
