Deleting user talk pages edit

User talk pages should not be deleted or nominated for deletion for just minor vandalism: see WP:UP#DELTALK. If you see this, the best thing to do is to revert it and warn the user that put it there. BoxOfChickens (talk · contribs · CSD/ProD log) 18:48, 11 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hi @BoxOfChickens:, I see, I falsely believed it was a non-existent User (User:Saif ullah saify bhatti) but apparently it was created at 17:51), so I thought it might as well be reported fo CSD/deletion. PS Sorry for rolling back "your" barnstar :-), IP likely copied it from my Talkpage, as it was "signed" by Boomer Vial, but the actual edit was made by IP [3] who is currently blocked actually [4]. Straight level 4 warning? edit

The vandal that was vandalizing "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire" really didn't deserve a straight level 4 warning in my opinion. What do you think? Joel.Miles925 (talk) 15:00, 14 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

I think he is blocked now indef for both vandalism and an offensive username [5], [6]. FYI As you can see on that page, he/she got a level 1 first from Cluebot, then a level 4 which is perfectly fine for obvious vandalism (there is no need for all 4 levels of warnings in the case of, again, obvious vandalism). Horseless Headman (talk) 15:04, 14 January 2016 (UTC).Reply

I'm checking his contribs... you were completely right. Sorry, I was a bit too lenient there. Joel.Miles925 (talk) 15:06, 14 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

.Don't think any action is required. There is already an admin involved and it isn't too strenuous of a game of Whack-a-Mole. RBI applies. IP vandalism edit

Hey I noticed your reverts of vandalism on France in the American Revolutionary War. I wanted to thank you for that, and as well as to let you know that the IP that reported to the WP:AIV was not the same IP that was vandalizing the article which you reverted. Boomer Vial (talk) 16:13, 20 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

@Boomer Vial: Hi and thanks! No, indeed, the IP vandal you thanked me for was not reported by me to AIV, because it was already blocked before I could do so. I reported just before that, however, a very similar IP which vandalised a similar theme article (French Revolutionary Wars) 66.87.149.227 who did vandalise beyond user warning 4. The IP that got blocked too - 66.87.149.9 ‎- was likely the same person given the likeness of both IPs (turn on/off modem or similar) and the similar-ish article themes. Some admin will have followed it and blocked the "unreported" one too, decided it is the same person, in which case the "old" warnings still apply, and blocked him/her. Cheers, Horseless Headman (talk) 16:24, 20 January 2016 (UTC).Reply

Speedy deletion G1 edit

Hi. I see you tagged User:Pooja Yadav1/sandbox with speedy deletion WP:G1. However, the description for G1 says:

"This applies to pages consisting entirely of incoherent text or gibberish with no meaningful content or history. It does not cover poor writing, partisan screeds, obscene remarks, implausible theories, vandalism or hoaxes, fictional material, coherent non-English material, or poorly translated material. Nor does it apply to user sandboxes or other pages in the user namespace. In short, if you can understand it, G1 does not apply."

The page is in reasonably understandable English, and it is in user namespace - and so it is not eligible for G1 on those two counts. I have, therefore, removed the G1 tag. Boing! said Zebedee (talk) 10:02, 25 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

United kingdoms my home (talk) 23:11, 25 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Hello and thank you, United kingdoms my home. Yes, I wanted something with natural / mythical roots, but lots of stuff like Ignis fatuus or will-o-the-wisp etc.etc. were already existing accounts, and variations thereof, so I had to think of something else. Then I thought of the Headless Horseman, as you say, mixed it up and yes, that Username did not exist yet. The Headless Horseman is a figure in the The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, an 1820 story, there are also various films, my favourite one is with Johnny Depp and Christopher Walken in it: Sleepy Hollow. No, I do not ride a black stallion, I fear I might loose my head ;-). Horseless, indeed. From your userpage I gather you live in the UK, are a youthful, dog loving (wiki)witch/wizard and put Dutch spells on stalkers :-) ? Usernames edit

Thanks for your help dealing with inappropriate usernames. However, you don't need to report users that aren't currently active (the instructions at UAA specify, "Do not report a username unless it has been used in the last 2-3 weeks"). It just makes unnecessary work for admins trying to handle an often-backlogged noticeboard. Thanks. -- Ed (Edgar181) 14:49, 27 January 2016 (UTC)Reply

Ah Edgar181, I see! Then I can just stick to the recent ones (as usual, actually), I thought to clean up a bit. I mean the ones I reported the last hour or 2 nonetheless are grossly inappropriate (not cases of doubt), but if that is the policy, that is the policy :-). Horseless Headman (talk) 14:55, 27 January 2016 (UTC).Reply
I agree that they are grossly inappropriate, and I don't know why they weren't blocked at the time they were created and used. But they are not doing any harm now, so it's best to just leave them. Regards, -- Ed (Edgar181) 14:58, 27 January 2016 (UTC)Reply
Edgar181, yes, maybe because most of them never edited, and therefore had less exposure to other editors / "watchers" and for some reason bots missed them as well. Most reported names at UAA probably passed by in the "recent changes" systems (and/or because they vandalise), some will slip through even with freaks like me regularly eyeballing the (recent) creation log ;-) Horseless Headman (talk) 16:50, 27 January 2016 (UTC).Reply

Fun! edit

Your recent editing history at History of Wikipedia shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the article's talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. • Well, Jsharpminor you did have me there for a moment, but with such edits [9] I knew the evidence is / was on my side , I already started writing on your talkpage a WTF-flavoured message, when I noted the added barnstar. Note: probably not everyone may like this joke (that is, when they see the warning without the barnstar because online). I myself will survive, though. ;-) And thanks for the barnstar of course! And yes, I changed the title above. Horseless Headman (talk) 17:12, 9 February 2016 (UTC).Reply
Naturally. And just in case you ever get into this argument for realsies:
The following actions are not counted as reverts for the purposes of 3RR:
  • Reverting obvious vandalism—edits that any well-intentioned user would agree constitute vandalism, such as page blanking and adding offensive language.

Gilles Andruet edit

Hi,

Can I put the photo of Gilles Andruet on the wiki article in French? --90.29.52.34 (talk) 16:43, 19 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

IP, you'll have to ask people at the French wikipedia itself (and give them a link to this english image page, because if it is copyright infringement indeed, it will be, as the article says, deleted on or after the 25th of Feb). In that case you cannot use it. Copyright rules also differ from country to country, so ask the French people, they will know what to do. Horseless Headman (talk) 16:51, 19 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
IP, if you had a user account I could ping you. Anyway, image seems okay for use on the en.wp but not necessarily on the fr.wp. So, conclusion remains the same: ask the French.. Horseless Headman (talk) 19:19, 19 February 2016 (UTC).Reply

Thanks for the message edit

Hi -not sure you saw my reasoning for removing the material. Wikipedia shouldn't be a advertisement for the book. If there are any reliable sources discussing the proposals, let's include them, but otherwise it's listcruft. 69.21.84.93 (talk) 18:01, 19 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Oh hey, that's fine, thanks for removing it again without discussing. Appreciate your thoughtful conversation on the matter. 69.21.84.93 (talk) 18:07, 19 February 2016 (UTC)Reply
IP, I cannot do everything at the same time. If you have a problem with the content of an Article, please discuss it first with others on the Talk page and wait for consensus before blanking large chunks of text. Since article has been like this since at least 2012, I am pretty sure all or most people who read or worked on the Article have no problem with it. I presume the book itself is the source. Horseless Headman (talk) 18:09, 19 February 2016 (UTC).Reply
Actually, the list of proposals has been in there continuously since 2008 [10] and [11]. Horseless Headman (talk) 18:26, 19 February 2016 (UTC).Reply

Gene Weingarten edit

Hi, horseless. There is some dickhead out there who keeps inserting into Gene Weingarten's Wiki page the least flattering photo ever taken of im, and only because he knows Weingarten feels that way. (He has written about that picture.) I realize it is a joke, and it is sort of funny, but he is using Wiki in a hostile fashion. Weingarten has said he doesn't give a crap if his page has a photo, so long as it is not that one. You can see why this is just hostile, and shitty, right? Wiki shouldn't be used like that, right? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.66.118.163 (talk) 19:29, 19 February 2016 (UTC) Why would you keep inserting that picture? It's obviously a hostile use of Wiki. Is there simply no way to stop this person? You see my point, right? 72.66.118.163 (talk) 19:38, 19 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

IP, first of all, please do not call other people "dickhead" as per WP:CIVIL, I recall people getting blocked for less and so does Favonian. The "dickhead" you are likely refering to is GRuban, who seems to have inserted the image originally in August 2014 [12]. Eyeballing the Article History [13] shows someone (singular or plural) has ever since repetitively removed or disabled the image or even removed the entire infobox. All options are vandalism and have as such been reverted by various people. I personally don't see any shocking problem with the photo, as to require its immediate removal as per WP:BLP and its WP:MUG. This seems to be a subjective issue about what is a "nice" enough photo indeed, as you say yourself ("flattering"). Repeated vandalism (let alone personal insults) may result in an editing block, fyi. Now, you are saying "He has written about that image", could you link to it, please, or tell me the source? You are also saying "Weingarten has said he doesn't give a crap if his page has a photo, so long as it is not that one.". Where did Mr Weingarten says this, and if so, why has he still not contacted the Wikimedia Foundation about it (see below) ever since late August 2014?
Anyway, if Mr. Weingarten [14] absolutely insists that the current picture is not to his liking and must be removed asap as far as he is concerned, he himself could address the issue e.g. as per [15] with his reasons, or anyone could leave a note on the Talk page of the article, that is Talk:Gene_Weingarten (with some older but not uninteresting sections about Mr. Weingarten on WP) asking for another "better" (whatever that would be) image. An image without copyright issues, of course. The way indeed, is to replace the current image with another one - as said, if deemed necessary by anyone - and to not just remove the current one. And honestly, even if this photo is not to your liking, it certainly is better than the image that Mr Weingarten is using to represent himself on his Twitter account [16]. Horseless Headman (talk) 14:06, 20 February 2016 (UTC).Reply
Hi, folks. Got alerted to my name being mentioned. I have nothing either for or against Mr. Weingarten, I just find images for the Wikipedia. I also have no particular attachment to that photo specifically, except that it's freely licensed, and those are the ones we are able to use. If Mr. Weingarten wants to contribute a better one, I'd be all too glad. WP:DONATEIMAGE explains in detail what he needs to do. --GRuban (talk) 16:33, 21 February 2016 (UTC)Reply

Dear Horseless: May I ask a favor? I am Gene Weingarten. There is someone who keeps putting the only picture of me that I despise on my Wiki page. It's a picture I have actually written about hating. I don't care if my page has a picture or not. If it has a picture I am fine with ANY OTHER PICTURE wiki wants. There are plenty in the public domain. If you want me to find you one, I will. This is just a small favor. Is it too much to ask?

I am not vain. I am an ugly guy. I know it. I am fine with that. I am asking for you to use ANY OTHER PICTURE. Okay?

This seems like a reasonable request to me, no? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.66.118.163 (talk) 00:39, 14 March 2016 (UTC)Reply

  • Yes, if you know public domain images of yourself we can use, please give us one, as you suggest. Advantage: we can be sure you're happier with it :-). This week should be possible, right? Your IP address seems to be the same as the first comment? Horseless Headman (talk) 18:26, 14 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
    • Please, do give us a better one. There aren't as many in the public domain as you think - or even any other acceptable free licenses - I've looked, and couldn't find any others. Of course you can easily change that by looking into a mirror while holding a smartphone, then releasing the resulting image under, say Creative Commons Attribution Share-Alike. Here are the details: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Email_templates. --GRuban (talk) 20:40, 14 March 2016 (UTC)Reply
