You MUST put some colors on your user page, otherwise it will look simple.--Vrysxy! (talk) 20:10, 22 May 2009 (UTC)

What is This, a Ghost Town? edit

Or ghost user page, I should say. I have no visitors since... I don't know when. This place is emptier than the universe before the Big Bang. If anyone ever gets to visit me, the "anyone" must reply to me on my user talk page. Typingwestern015 (talk) 02:28, 29 May 2009 (UTC)

Userpage edit

Hi Typingwestern015. I don't intend to scare you away or attempt to intimidate you, but I thought you might want to reconsider the image on your userpage. It may be in your best interest to remove the image, as it does release personal information about yourself (real name etc) that could be used against you by editors less high-minded. I have deleted the image and some revisions of your userpage in respect to your privacy for the time being. You are, of course, welcome to ask another administrator to restore them, but I just wanted to make you aware of the risks involved with releasing personal information on such a public forum. You are also welcome to discuss this with me on my talk page, or privately via e-mail. Hope to hear from you. \ Backslash Forwardslash / {talk} 13:20, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Barnstar edit

  The Swine Flu Barnstar
For helping with the US 2009 'swine flu' article Der.Gray (talk) 06:37, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

hey, just wanted to let you know your work is appreciated and noticed on the article. I'm doing what I can for it and while trying to update it tonight saw you and Alex537 seemed to be the most active on the talk page. No idea if this is an official barnstar or not or really even all that familiar with them but thanks for helping myself and everyone who uses the article for information! Der.Gray (talk) 06:37, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

What Happened To All My Visitors?! edit

On May 8, 2009, I first signed in on Wikipedia to help with some articles. Since then, I helped a lot with countless articles. I even got awarded a barnstar. Nowadays, I still work, but I don't get any visitors or recognitions. What happened? Did everyone who talked to me before die of the current flu pandemic? This is disappointing, but I still need people visiting me. This may not be a social networking site, but I need someone to talk to me about my site. Stop me before I plagarize for the first time on any site! Typingwestern015 (talk) 01:54, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

I just wanted to let you know, I don't consider myself a stellar editor (probably far from it) but I've gotten a couple of barnstars myself, and yet I don't get a lot of visitors to my talk page either. Generally when I do it's to either ask me a question, or accuse me of something (d'oh!). I've been a fairly steady contributor to Wikipedia since I registered as a user 2 years ago, yet I can go for months at a time without anyone posting a single thing on my talk page (I think the longest was 4 months). So don't let it get to you, it happens. It's probably better to have nothing on your talk page than something negative! :) -- Atamachat 21:24, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

July 2009 edit

Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, please do not add promotional material to articles or other Wikipedia pages, as you did to Talk:List of science fiction novels. Advertising and using Wikipedia as a "soapbox" is strongly discouraged. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about Wikipedia. Thank you. --Orange Mike | Talk 13:18, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

Your misuse of userspace and spamming of article talk pages have been reported to the Conflict of Interest Noticeboard. You will of course want to have some input there. --Orange Mike | Talk 13:23, 10 July 2009 (UTC)

welcome edit

Ok, you have a visitor, and its not smap related (i like that accidental spelling i just created). i have posted content to talk pages twice that i was gently remanded for, and it was promptly forgotten about (i hope). i apologized. i know what it feels like to not be perfect. anyway, i wanted to tell you that i once found a 1907 wheat penny, and threw it into a bush. i know, thats impossible. i was 10, but i have a pretty good memory, and i learned a few years later that that was impossible. good luck with the novel. Wikipedias book coverage is much worse than its coverage for music. i think the plot summaries mostly suck, and they may be original research, which i hadnt even thought about until i was reading WMOS or maybe a talk page. i hope one day that book coverage can be improved, along with publisher coverage, author coverage, etc. ive tried to add more relevant information, and some cover art for particularly beautiful books. i have never gotten a barnstar but i did get a compliment. i think im a pretty good editor, but maybe i dont socialize well. why should i? this is not a social networking site. anyway, enough rambling.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 00:25, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

Online places for writers edit

Honestly, I don't know a heck of a lot, I've been into writing fiction before and tried my hand at a couple of novels but I don't have the discipline for it, sadly. So I am not incredibly knowledgeable about where you would go, but I did poke around.

This place looks promising, though its usefulness is probably dependent on the community there and I know nothing about it: http://www.writing.com/page/blog_writing/blog_writing.html

Unfortunately I can't find any other site quite like that, which looks to be focused on writers and readers commenting on each others' work. The alternative I suppose would be a generic blogging site like "Wordpress". I apologize for not being more helpful. -- Atamachat 04:12, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

That (www.writing.com) is kind of good since there is a free program, but the problem is, the good stuff costs money, and I mean A LOT OF MONEY. I could use it, of course. Typingwestern015 (talk) 20:37, 12 July 2009 (UTC)

novel edit

is this your first novel? do you have an agent, and have you sent an outline to any prospective publishers? you cant do this unless you have been invited to do so, and they can judge if its commercially viable from the outline. self promoted sf is hard, i believe, because the market for sf is already very well defined. most of the cutting edge stuff gets published, if its well written. You should read Locus (magazine) religiously, and see how many small press books get published. mostly horror, from small specialty houses. you might try submitting a chapter as a short story in a small journal or fanzine. if your novel has extremely odd content, such as metaphysical/occult speculation, like Paul Di Filippo, you might find one of his publishers. DONT EVER GO WITH A TRADITIONAL Vanity press, most bookstores will NOT stock their titles, no matter what the publishers tell you. better to just get it printed by a for hire printing press and warehouse and sell the book yourself (costly), or set up on demand printing, yourself. you can use the social networking sites, a personal web site, even ride around on a mule with a megaphone, but there is only one thing which will sell your book: word of mouth from satisfied readers. thats it. thats all. even one person who is a big sf reader (like myself) liking it could do it. but that means that all the promotion in the world wont help a book that isnt that good. i have very close experience with a novelist who really thought his work was good. it wasnt, and no one would publish it. good can have different meanings. a good thriller must keep the readers attention and stimulate emotions like fear and suspense. erotica must turn people on. horror must disgust and frighten people, not make them laugh. hard sf must have good science in it, so that an actual scientist could like it. literary sf, even cutting edge stuff, must have the style that people look for. and you can just be a nutjob like Philip K. Dick, whose writings were very personal and unnerving. so you have to be as critical about your writing as possible, and try to see it through the eyes of the reader. this is probably impossible, but can be done if you are as honest in your self assessment as possible. and all writing is rewriting. visit a good science fiction bookstore and talk with the clerks and owner. a good one in california is Dark Carnival, in berkeley. in england, there was or is a store called Billion Year Spree, from the nonfiction book by Brian Aldiss. write or visit either of them. maybe they will be willing to read a chapter, but you better not be pushy. noone in the book business has any tolerance for pushy authors whose work doesnt justify their excitement. booksellers can be arrogant and knowitalls (i should know, i was one), and rightfully so considering the role booksellers have had over the last 400 years as gatekeepers of written culture. good luck. Mercurywoodrose (talk) 07:23, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

oh, and your comment to User:Jimfbleak on his talk page was mildly offensive to me, and though i dont know how they feel, i would recommend you apologize, if you can see how that throwaway comment is out of proportion to actions taken. sarcasm doesnt translate on the internet, if you hadnt noticed. actually, sarcasm among friends and collaborators is almost always counterproductive. and we are all coworkers here. and NOONE will delete an article about your novel if its published in a manner which shows notability (ie not just say a free download, etc.) if Bantam publishes it, as an example, it gets an article guaranteed, and hell you could write it if you wanted (but NO hyperbole)Mercurywoodrose (talk) 07:35, 11 July 2009 (UTC)

No problem edit

Hi, no problem. Some people react to page deletion by blanking my page or adding eye-wateringly crude suggestions for what I could do, so mild sarcasm barely registers. I didn't respond before before because I read your message as just a comment jimfbleak (talk) 05:45, 13 July 2009 (UTC)
