Expanding the article edit

Over the next few days and weeks I will be attempting to expand the article, with a more detailed account of the team's history, as well as players' fortunes after leaving the Rec Field. If anyone could help out on that it would be great! [[User:That'sWhatIWould'veDone|]] (talk) 20:32, 16 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

That's great to hear. I'll leave some links you may/may not already know of at the bottom of the page. You could even try contacting the Mountaineers front office for in-depth information.
As far as alumni, Curt Smith (don't know when he played for them) played for the Netherlands in the '09 WBC. Also, the NECBL website has a complete list of league alumni who have gone on to play professionally with their NECBL team also listed. After you finish the section, I'll try to keep up with the accomplishments of these players and keep it updated. If you want someone to look over the section after you're done feel free to notify me on either this page or my personal talk when you feel you've completed a section. Also, if you dig up any info on Montpelier Recreation Field, I encourage you to expand the page yourself or pass the links on to me if you are busy with the Team History section. Good luck and thanks for adopting the task.
Here are those links- Mountaineers site Roster & History sections look promising, also has contact info, Team local paper coverage Archives search bar near top of page, Alumni page at necbl.com (there's also a Mountaineers-only list at the team's website), and just googling "Vermont Mountaineers" should give you more material.

I did some work on the article today, adding a list of notable alumni made up of players who have gone on to play at at least the Minor League A Level. I also added a section on the team's history, which is a little bare at the moment! I'd appreciate your feedback :-) [[User:That'sWhatIWould'veDone|]] (talk) 20:07, 17 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Alumni Section Revision edit

Actually I was thinking about including all alumni (active and not active of all peak levels). I do not believe this would result in an oversized article. A major goal of the NECBL's is to give players a springboard to professional baseball. Therefore, this aspect of a team's article should be as extensive as is plausible.
Instead of putting all notable alumni in one table, I was considering we should make an MLB table, AAA table, and AA table. The remaining alums (who peaked at A-Advanced or below) would be listed in a text format below the tables. (Note- notability guidelines of WikiProject Baseball only apply to article creation, not to inclusion within an article.) Here's what I envision:

MLB
Player Year w/ VER Most recent team Peak level Active Accomplishments
James White 2004 Lancaster Barnstormers (Ind.) MLB Yes World Series Champion (BOS-2007)
Triple A
Player Year w/ VER Most recent team Peak level Active Accomplishments
John Smith 2003 Akron Aeros (AA) AAA No 6th in ERA (2.73), South Atlantic League-2004
Double-A
Player Year w/ VER Most recent team Peak level Active Accomplishments
James Hill 2005 Connecticut Defenders (AA) AA No -
Class A-Advanced

The following alumni have reached Class A-Advanced: Anthony Frusciante (Mountaineers 2006), John Kiedis (2006), Michael Smith (2005), etc.

Here would be the text-based format of Class A-Advanced for Class A, Short Season A, Rookie (both Rookie-Advanced and Rookie), and Independent baseball, in that order.

So here's a list of what I changed,
  • Include all alumni.
  • Separate into tables/text paragraphs by peak level (I'll leave it up to you whether or not to keep the "Peak level" field in the tables. If you do remove it, leave :a "tables organized by peak level" note to the top of the section.
  • Change "highest level played" to "peak level"; "Notes/achievements" to "Accomplishments"
  • Include clasiffication of most recent team.
  • add Active Y/N column.
  • Suggestion- all lists/tables ordered by player last name/year with Mountaineers, preferably the latter.
If you don't have the time or energy to complete all of this, just get off to a good start and I can finish it, if you'd like. Please respond with your thoughts as soon as you get this. Kithira (talk) 20:35, 17 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Response edit

Looks pretty solid. I'll go through the History section and Americanize some of the terminology. If you could possibly add a reference for the first two paragraphs of the History section that would be helpful. Unless you are opposed, I might change the alumni section to a section more along the lines of my revision. If you have not responded by tomorrow, I will go ahead and make that change. I will most likely keep a single table including all players who have played in Class-A and above, with the remaining (short season, rookie, independent) in a text list format. I am also considering a prose subsection regarding Curt Smith's participation in the World Baseball Classic Kithira (talk) 20:46, 17 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi again. I think I'll leave you to create the set-up of the alumni section because I'm not completely sure of it. In your example above, why are John Smith and James Hill in different sections (AAA and AA, respectively) if they both played at a peak level of AAA but now both play at AA? When you have set it up I'll happily fill in the names, peak level (which I agree should remain) etc. etc.

I'll do some work on the history section in the mean time, and maybe add a brief bit about baseball in Vermont before the Mountaineers (keeping it relevant, of course). [[User:That'sWhatIWould'veDone|]] (talk) 10:40, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Sorry about the Double-A/Triple-A thing, just a typo. I changed it to reflect what I really meant. I probably won't be able to implement my setup until late tonight/tomorrow morning on your time but I will get it done. Don't worry about filling in the names and other info as it should be pretty straightforward for me to transfer the info. If you do add a section on baseball in vermont, perhaps check out the Vermont Lake Monsters page. They are a short season-A ball team which plays in nearby Burlington, Vermont. Thanks, will do. I have just added a section on NECBL records that the Mountaineers have achived, I may add individual end-of-season player and manager awards soon. [[User:That'sWhatIWould'veDone|]] (talk) 11:11, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Just worked on the alumni section. Decided to separate the tables to make navigation easier. Also removed the "Accomplishments" field because I thought it would be better to have a separate prose section to cover any noteworthy accomplishments by alumni (ex- Curt Smith playing in WBC or when they have their first alumni reach the MLB). I thought this was preferable to having a few players with something in the section and the others with blank boxes.
If you're doing the end of season awards section I would think of adding it to the general awards section under the subtitle "League Awards." Kithira (talk) 21:02, 18 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for all the effort, it looks great. I'll add the general awards later That'sWhatIWould'veDone 10:42, 19 August 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by That'sWhatIWould'veDone (talkcontribs)

Sounds good, I'll try to dig up some other material to add. Also keep tabs on the players in the alumni sections for promotions/retriements, etc. I'll also change the page's rating to a C-Class. (too many sources/different aspects of team covered for Start, not enough material for B-Class. The page definitely looks great. Kithira (talk) 11:14, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

It does look great, great work! I just added a section on end-of-season awards, if you want to check it out, which should be the final main section of the site. All that's left is to keep an eye on the history/alumni/awards etc. sections and keep them updated. That'sWhatIWould'veDone (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 11:40, 19 August 2009 (UTC).Reply

Added an All-NECBL section and will probably add a few other things in the coming days. Thanks for the barnstar and don't hesitate to ask me if you're wondering about something on wiki. Kithira (talk) 12:05, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
