Sources for non-American media needed

Many sources focus on the portray of HIV and AIDS in American media. Who has sources about the portrayal of HIV and AIDS in other countries? In America part of the story is that famous media personalities got HIV and then told the public, thereby raising awareness. Does anyone have sources about someone famous doing this in another country and making a special impact by being the first celebrity to do this? Blue Rasberry (talk) 23:41, 23 October 2011 (UTC)

Student plans for edits

I found many scholarly sources for media portrayal of HIV/AIDS in specific areas such as South Africa and Burma. I plan to add that research to the article and expand at least those two sections. I am still working on potentially expanding on other specific countries, but I have yet to find enough reliable sources to expand on another country's section substantially. (There is one interesting source I found about China. Should I add this information as well, or just focus on areas in which I have more than one source)?

That being said, I found much additional information about HIV/AIDS portrayal in American media that I do not think is accurately represented on this page. For this reason, I plan to move the US section of the article to the top. I would like to add more specific sections to the US portion of this article because it currently mostly focuses on famous figures who have had HIV/AIDS. I am planning to focus on different types of media (newspaper, television, radio, etc.) and explain how those have each affected the HIV/AIDS movement similarly and differently over time. I will also focus on different groups (women, children, African Americans) and how the media has affected their experience with the HIV/AIDS epidemic specifically.

Additionally, I have found a few somewhat random articles, such as one entitled "Does Donor Assistance for HIV Respond to Media Pressure?" that I plan to add to the US section of the article or perhaps in its own section at the end of the article. Which do you think would be best?

Lastly, I would like to change the title of the article to “HIV/AIDS in the media.” The new title is broader. It will allow me to direct the focus of any section of the article whichever way I choose and still make sense. Further, it allows for more analysis as to how media has changed over time and how this change has affected the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Thanks user:Alardenoit! When you find any good source, share it here if you do not use it to develop the article. Finding sources is the most difficult part of developing articles like this. Do not feel responsible for developing a section on China if you do not understand; maybe after some time someone will have more sources and together those sources will make things more clear.

I also feel like media portrayal in the United States is not accurately represented but I found few scholarly overviews to integrate here. A few months ago in NYC there was an AIDS exhibit which was supposed to focus on media responses, but the curators also had a lot of trouble finding sources. If you found sources then I would be thrilled.

The "donor assistance" article you found is probably culture or country specific- I would have to see the source to comment but put it where you think is best and someone else will move it if they like.

This sounds good to me. I think one thing that would be helpful is defining what you mean by media in this article. The article currently mentions films and people publicly announcing that they are HIV/AIDS positive, but I'm not sure whether or not that qualifies as media. This article is definitely missing citations and could also benefit from some images. I think its fine for the US section to be longest if that is where there is the most information available. Moving the United States section to the top, however, might give the article a very US-centered vibe since all the other countries are just listed alphabetically. Something that I think would help your article is clearing up ambiguities. Definitely fleshing out some areas like the 'Media figures known for presenting HIV/AIDS issues', especially the 'Campaigns' section, would be helpful and really add to the general information available in your article. Also clearing up some ambiguity in the article would help people understand better what is being said i the article. For example, the 'Other' section in the 'Themes in Media depiction' section is quite ambiguous to the reader. You could also add examples and links to other pages under sections like 'Campaigns' or 'Notable Depiction'. On that same note, you could add a description under the major section headings like 'Notable Depiction' describing what that section is before jumping right in to the subsections.
