Initial contribution

There are at least two problems with the article as I've saved it: 1. I can't seem to get paragraphing in the text box at the top of the article. Is that not supported in text boxes? 2. The book specs (e.g., ISBN, page count, etc.) that appear on these pages appear to refer generally to the book's first edition/printing. How can these be determined if that first edition is not on a contributor's bookshelf?TurnerHodges 16:12, 6 July 2007 (UTC)

You might get a kick out of this story: As I was doing a little additional research on Doxy I went to the Wolfe Pack site and looked it up there. So much care has gone into those pages that I was surprised to see "Jaquette" (as it's spelled in my copy of the book) shown as "Jacquette" -- presumably after "Jacqueline." As invited to do by the site, I wrote the web mistress (whose handle is Golden Spider) to inform her of the erratum. She sent back a brief note thanking me, and signed it, "I wish you well." Unfamiliar word

Isn't the "Unfamiliar word" section subjective? In one person's mind, a certain word may be unfamiliar. In another mind, it may be very familiar. Who claims that Stout always includes an unfamiliar word in his stories? It appears to be true, but may be a mere speculation.Lestrade (talk) 15:42, 16 July 2010 (UTC)Lestrade

Today I see the words "clarification needed" beginning to appear in the unfamiliar word sections (here and here) — with comment here. Perhaps some language could be crafted to introduce notable examples of Stout's vocabulary. The discussion could be continued in that Spurious Importance section of the Nero Wolfe talk page, where there had been consensus to restore and retain the section in the Wolfe articles. — WFinch (talk) 20:53, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Doxy and Fleming derivation

Almost four years ago I provided the initial plot summary for this novel, and I skim it once or twice a year to view (largely with pleasure, btw) the improvements that others have made. I do the same thing with most of the articles that I've contributed to, and I generally enjoy the experience -- of course with a few signal exceptions.

Shortly after that initial plot summary appeared, a user who calls himself Kafziel summarily removed a footnote regarding the word "doxy" and the surname (Fleming) of two of the principal characters. The footnote stated, "Mrs. Fleming flies off the handle at the term "doxy," which is derived from the middle Flemish "docke," or "doll." A Flemish-speaking Belgian is a 'Fleming.' The user wrote (in his edit summary, not on the discussion page), "it is OR (and pointless) to imply that the character's name has anything to do with the etymology of the word "doxie" [sic]"

So, once or twice a year since then, I have considered whether it is OR, and pointless, to respond, and have decided that it was. It still is. There's no percentage in getting into an argument with a latter day Paul Chapin. However, I think that I might as well point out that what was truly OR was not my implication, if one there was, but his inference.
