The NA is to enable us to search for articles that have missing ISBNs (where such are available) and also point out to people that ISBN are truely not applicable. The Doorbell Rang

Hi Walter -- I just took a quick look at The Doorbell Rang -- rather, its page. (I can't believe that it's the first time I've seen it, but I believe it is.) I took a peek at the edit history and note that you've done quite a bit of editing to the page. I didn't take the time to see who has contributed what, but it does look as though you've adopted it as a sort of pet sub-project.

I write because I do think that the text needs considerable cleanup. There are errors of diction (for example, MV uses the term "syntax" when she means "diction" -- a distinction that any true believer would make), of fact (as to what the book says, as distinct from what the article now says the book says), genuine POV/OR (the comment about what the FBI would prefer to keep private), and so on. Most of the text that I find problematic appears to have been contributed by ModusVivendi, but, again, I haven't pored over the edit history.

I intend to clean it up, and to focus on the text -- not the matter on adaptations, references, infoboxes and so on. (I do think that the initial quote was well chosen.) I just wanted you to know that I'm going to start on this and to solicit your thoughts -- again, I know you must have spent a lot of time on this page already. TurnerHodges 23:30, 20 July 2007 (UTC)

Oh, that's good to read. Yes, it's come a long way, but the article needs so much help. I haven't edited much of the Plot summary. In the Introduction, I did add the quote and some content about Fred Cook, but that section is still pretty choppy. I wish I could have kept the book cover for The FBI Nobody Knows, which I had added; but I removed it after discovering that a book cover may only be used on its own article. I may still create an article for that book; I find that people are surprised it was real.

The Epilogue was a pet project, since that was information I found that could be related without editorializing. (If you haven't come across it yet, see Where There's a Will for another story about the FBI and Stout. Incredible, as Mrs. Bruner would say.) But if you see the neutrality of the article being lost anywhere, go for it. Thanks for improving this article, it's another important one. — WFinch 04:05, 21 July 2007 (UTC)

P.S. Oh, yes — "the parts it would prefer to keep private," which is in the "Of further interest" section. I'm continuing this here rather than on the Doorbell discussion page because heaven knows how long it would take to get a broader response. I'll probably post there after you and I kick this around a little.

I've done an extensive rewrite of the plot summary but don't wish to put it up before I know what should be done about other matters. My principal issue is that the Doorbell page should be about the book, not about Cook. The information about Cook, and about Stout's problems with the FBI, is important, no doubt about that, and I certainly don't wish to hide it. (In fact, I confess to considerable anti-Hoover bias and I hope it doesn't show.)

I would recommend putting the material that's presently in the section titled Epilogue on a separate page, linked from both the Doorbell page and from Rex Stout's page. The information in Epilogue is only tangentially related to Doorbell.

I have also rewritten the Introduction and the Of Further Interest sections to make them npov. Again, that can go up after it's clear what will happen to the Epilogue. BTW, the formatting of the Epilogue material does not make it clear what is from a contributor, what is from Mitgang, and whether the M. A. Jones material is from the Freedom of Information files directly or as quoted by Mitgang. If it's all Mitgang, then I'm not sure that it fits within the fair use guidelines -- it would be a very long quote. At any rate, that needs cleanup and it should probably be done by the contributor who provided it (MV?).

Yes, this part of the discussion may as well stay right here. I'm not certain the original contributor(s) are even active here these days, and this essentially concerns the Epilogue (not MV, ME).

I've taken your point about the Epilogue, and about Mr. Mitgang, too, who would certainly be one who would not appreciate too lengthy a quote. I've ruthlessly cut out material more suitable for the Fred Cook article, and information already on the Rex Stout page.

I hope what remains relates specifically enough to Doorbell to stay with the article. As a "tail," I'd like to see the FBI response to the book stay here. I'm looking forward to seeing how you've incorporated the Cook information, and you should just put up your rewrite whenever you're ready.

Okay, it's up. The changes for neutrality that I made in the Introduction -- which I renamed Prologue, BTW, to parallel the Epilogue -- and in the Of further interest sections are very minor: just some softening, really. I did add a note referring the reader to the Rex Stout page, where the Mitgang material now figures prominently. I do think that it belongs there as part of Stout's real life rather than of Wolfe's imaginary one, in particular because of the echoes from the past in the way that today's administration runs its own Star Chambers, drumhead courts martial, phone taps without warrants and signing statements.

I hope the new plot summary meets with readers' approval, and yours. As I was editing the old one (a project I gave up -- I decided I had to start from scratch) I kept notes on the reasons I was deleting and changing, and I halfway expect to need them later on.

As to "consideration," yes, there's a certain coarseness to the nature of the communications on Wikipedia, and what I read as acting out behavior. I find that I miss CompuServe's old moderated forums, where sysops enforced civility and encouraged courtesy. The administrators could do more of that themselves, but as I read their comments, some of them seem to be working out their own personal issues in this relatively anonymous medium. I'd struggled with editing the existing plot summary, too, and got depressed at the prospect. Now, it's — well, it's remarkable. I don't believe there's a single Wolfe book article more important to have done well here. And now I see that poor Clifton Fadiman needs to be taken under somebody's wing; splendid... Well, if that wants to haunt me it'll have to take a number.

Heaven knows where the term Epilogue came from (not the novels project template, I can tell you) but I like there being a Prologue to go with it. It occurred to me that every episode of the old Efrem Zimbalist TV show, "The FBI," would end with an Epilogue, so maybe that burrowed its way out of my subconscious. In any case, that device brackets off the Cook/FBI material nicely and puts the emphasis where it belongs, on the book. I can't believe you'll have to defend your changes. The major thing that is lacking (see templates on talk page) is the "film image" - a poster or DVD cover for the infobox. Once that's added, it can easily be upgraded to start. SkierRMH 20:12, 4 September 2007 (UTC)

[Thanks for removing the template from the article page. You're right, the "filmimage" I've put in the infobox is not a screenshot — it's a scan of an original, vintage promotional photo, as described in the fair use rationale on the image page. This is a little-seen 1936 film that, among a great many other titles, has never seen a legitimate release from the studio. It's never been issued on DVD or VHS, so there is no cover to scan and no screen to shoot. Perhaps, though, the note you've left on the talk page will draw the attention of an editor who has a copy of the film poster, although I would think this image is adequate. Hi. This article has been blanked by another contributor to allow investigation of copyright concerns, but though the material in question was placed by you, you were not advised. I'm giving you the requisite "form letter" above, since this contains all the handy wikilinks and pertinent information that you may need for verifying permission if you did utilize this from an external source. (I'm sorry for the presumption the form makes that you are a new contributor. I suppose the original contributors to that template thought it better to welcome unnecessarily than not to welcome when needed.) I see that the language is replicated at a number of other sites. If perchance you utilized material from a press release or blurb, it will need to be rewritten unless we verify permission. Some companies (though not all) do permit reuse of press releases, but many forbid commercial reproduction or modification, and text placed on Wikipedia must be licensed to allow both, unless it conforms to our non-free content guidelines. In a similar vein, it seems that you also placed the extensive quote from Time in this article. This will need to be abbreviated to meet our non-free content guidelines for text, perhaps highlighting one or two phrases by the review's author and otherwise briefly summarizing his perspective.

Murdoch Myteries

Thanks for putting in a link in the tempo plate for the show. Do you know how to make a table of contents above the episodes, same as other shows? I've tried to figure out, since show has a third season coming and this would make it easier to go to individual seasons if someone wanted, instead scrolling down the entire page. You made me think a minute... The best way to handle it, I realized, was to add the "References" section that had been requested (and I added "External links" for good measure). I think once more than three sections exist in an article, a "table of contents" box, complete with links, appears miraculously at the top of the page. Ah, I see — an article can have as few as two section headings and still have a "contents" box at the top. The problem had been with the formatting of the section headings, which had been bracketed by three equal signs rather than two. "Stub class"

I've noted that there's a hard-working individual going through a long list of novels and adding the "stub" category tag to the articles based on the assessment on the associated talk page. This came to my attention with The League of Frightened Men and I note that a number of other Wolfe novels have been so tagged. The individual in question seems well-intentioned, and the problem seems to be that the assessments themselves are out of date and way, way too low. My Wikipedia contributions have been very minimal lately; I wondered if you might be interested in taking on the task of upgrading the assessments for at least the Wolfe novels. I looked at the quality scale and distilled it (possibly to its detriment) to a rough-and-ready rule of thumb: if it's got more than three references, it ain't a stub LOL. The same reviewer has worked on some novels by Christie, Queen, Sayers, etc., so I have a little bit of work to occupy me. (I realized a few weeks ago that I hadn't actually contributed any information to the 'pedia in months, and that I was more of a traffic cop/Miss Manners than I felt was good for me, so I have been reassessing. Hi, Doc. Re: the Citizen Kane article — Those two sources are already cited inline (the preferred method, I believe) with specific page numbers in the section headed "Notes". That's why I removed them from the "bibliography" section, which seems a bit POV since it isn't comprehensive. Its being listed in the "bibliography" gave disproportionate attention and weight to the Nasaw book, which is cited only once in the article — that's what got my attention. As for the Welles-Bogdanovich book, I've cited that specifically myself in my contributions to the article, and it appears repeatedly in the section headed "Notes".

I'll happily restore those two titles to the "bibliography"; but maybe the method of listing sources, references and notes on this article could use some discussion. Thanks. — WFinch (talk) 16:20, 6 April 2012 (UTC)

I thought it wouldn't hurt to segregate each negative review to its own paragraph. We seem to have lost the thread of the Bergman comments.

As for the first negative review, this is how the citation reads in the online source:

"Excerpted from Ray Carney's, 'Citizen Kane on its Fiftieth Anniversary: The Greatest Movie Ever Made?' The Christian Science Monitor, Tuesday, April 30, 1991."

Actually, the byline on that Christian Science Monitor article — which is titled Orson Welles and 'Rosebud' Ride Again, as near as I can tell — is David Sterritt. He invited various film experts, most of them educators, to weigh in on the significance of Citizen Kane on the eve of its 50th anniversary revival. Ray Carney is one; there are eight others, who are pretty positive in their views on Citizen Kane.

Also, what's presented online in that source is not an excerpt: it actually expands on what's contained in the Christian Science Monitor article.

Still, neither version grants Citizen Kane any praise whatsoever. The closest Carney comes to noting any technical achievements is to remark on its "tendentious photography." So, I think the edit can stand, FWIW, since it accurately communicates his opinion. The anonymous editor evidently knows something about that. — WFinch (talk) 01:22, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

Joseph Cotten

Just a heads up since you do lots of work on this article. I did a further edit about Cotten suffering a stroke in 1981 plus put a IC in about that and his autobiography.

Citizen Kane

Just saw your edit on Kane and wanted to reach out a personal thanks. I've just finished a c/e on the whole article, and noted several bits which needed cleaning, as obviously different editors have added different pieces over the years. The redaction of the Rosebud Yellow Robe subsection and incorporating into the existing discussion of Rosebud was desperately needed. I was going to get to it in the next week or so, but nice job! Rex Stout and HUAC

I've read the statement that Stout received, and ignored, a HUAC subpoena or invitation numerous times (not just on Wikipedia and sites sourced from Wikipedia), and even used it in talks I've given myself, so I will try to find corroboration for it, including from the HUAC files at the National Archives if need be. I'll let you know what I turn up.

Just last November—a few days before I gave a talk about Stout's FBI file to the Wolfe Pack Assembly, using the book chapter as well as the copies of Stout's file that Mitgang placed at the New York Public Library as my prime sources. (But I didn't realize that he had died until much later, and in fact had tried to reach him around the time to see if he might want to give the talk.) I'd like to see more, myself, because people find that period interesting and it's so relevant today — and Stout was such an example. I'd contributed some material awhile ago that I found in the Mitgang book, but there was such a level of detail that the consensus was to move the bulk of it to the articles on Where There's a Will and The Doorbell Rang. Hi, Firstly I admire your work on Citizen Kane and other Welles related articles. I was just wondering if you (of all editors) had any thoughts about getting an article ready for TFA for Welles' 100th birthday in May? It seems very appropriate. I've only ever worked on Chimes at Midnight and don't foresee doing any additional work on that article until Callow's third book is published, which unless I'm mistaken is scheduled for May. Do you think Kane needs much more work to be ready for a GA nomination, let alone FA? Hello, and thank you. I hadn't specifically thought about article status of any of the Welles-related articles, I'm just trying to improve them across the spectrum. I have especially wanted to get the Orson Welles article in good shape for the 100th anniversary of his birth, since many people will be looking at it on that day. Citizen Kane seems in quite good shape to me, so if you're familiar with the process perhaps you can start moving it forward — TFA would be wonderful for May 6. Cool, that probably would be the best article for May 6. One recent book called Orson Welles in Italy is on the one hand a bit boring but on the other hand has some good info about why Welles really moved to Europe in the late 1940s, which I think needs some expansion in the article since so many people have different theories about that. Have you considered creating a new article entirely about the writing of the script and its controversy/debate? It seems warranted and it would make Citizen Kane shorter and more readable. I know of film articles with supporting articles like Interpretations of 2001: A Space Odyssey and even Early life of David Lynch, but I'm not sure about the precedent. I think the entire "Sources" section would also go nicely there, and everything could be summarized in a few paragraphs in the Kane article. Damn, there's a huge backlog of GAN's right now. Its your call, but you could always try to skip GA and nominate it for FA right away. If you nominate it I think you should also mention it on the Film Task Force board, hopefully the fact that its Kane will give it some extra interest. Also, just for the record, although I think that realistically the article should be split, I would personally prefer it to be all one big article. I read that exceptions are sometimes made for long articles, and I suppose that if any article on films would deserve precedent it would be Kane, so I think its worth requesting if you still want it to be one big article. Re: Citizen Kane

Hi, I was just looking over this article, & saw that it has one item that will block it from being seriously considered for GA: there is a tag in the section "Themes" stating that the section requires expansion. Either the tag needs to be removed, or the section needs to be beefed up with more examples of themes in this movie. Wonder if you've ever noticed something like this on some of your uploads? When I discovered this some time ago, I'd seen quite a few of your uploads with WPA licenses thrown "into the net". Ah, so I see. I counted, and more than four dozen of the files I've uploaded since February 7 have been caught in this sifting, more than half of them Federal Theatre Project images. Someone on his talk page asked what was going on, and he seems to feel that even though it's a sloppy procedure it does catch some bad images. Fine, but I wish he'd purge his "Possible DR" pages once he's made his review. Which came first, the AFI notes or the TCM notes? Do you know for certain that AFI is the originator? For my part, I've been awrae of the TCM notes for years, but only saw the AFI notes recently, so my (personal) impression is tha TCM is the originator, but I'm more than willing to be shown to be wrong. Oh thank goodness it's not just me — I can't imagine why the new upload hasn't shown up yet. I've never seen anything like it. If it's really stuck, maybe tomorrow you can upload that last edited poster image (thank you) as a separate file, and the other can be orphaned and deleted.

The AFi graphic is so very small I'm not surprised you didn't see it — I doubt anyone sees it. That AFI site used to be pretty stingy when it came to accessing that information, but they appear to have loosened up. First National Pictures

There are several problems you have been making to "First National Pictures" on film articles:

• It is generally advised that if a redirect works, not to change it. You can take my word for that, or I can look up the page for you.

• "First National Pictures" was a redirect to the article "First National", so by the above, it was not necessary to change it.

• "If you were going to change it "[[First National]] Pictures" would not be the way to do it. "[[First National|First National Pictures]]" would be correct

However, that is all water under the bridge now, as I have moved the article from "First National" to "First National Pictures", where it should have been in the first place. Too many other institutions are called "First National" for a defunct movie studio to be the primary target for the phrase. Thus, links to the article should now be [[First National Pictures]]. Hello there — A template that appears in edit mode at the very top of the article—"Use mdy dates|date=May 2012"—is a note to editors that month-day-year date format should be used consistently in the article. This is undoubtedly because Citizen Kane is a film that was produced and released in the U.S., where that is the conventional style; see MOS:DATETIES.

If there are reference errors they should be corrected. At present Citizen Kane is classed as a Good Article and it's been regularly maintained, so if the corrections are extensive or controversial it might be best to discuss them first on the article's talk page. — WFinch (talk) 17:45, 26 March 2016 (UTC)

Ah, I see. That isn't an error, actually. It's a style of citing sources inline with the text.

• A citation that appears as "[7]:174" identifies the reference in the References section—the clickable "[7]" shows you it is Barbara Leaming's book—and then shows you the specific page cited, page 174.
• Lower-case letters in brackets—[a][b]] and so on—are explanatory footnotes, linking to the Notes section.

At some point when you're reading the article you stop noticing those things. But when you want to know the exact source of the information very quickly, it's a very handy style. — WFinch (talk) 14:41, 27 March 2016 (UTC)

Help finishing a filmography page

WFinch, I come to you asking for you're aid in helping to finish the formation of a current page, Earl Holliman filmography. I made it myself in honor of the actor, who is also my personal friend, and I am trying to complete it using the table format for his self appearances and awards/nominations but despite what I try I can't seem to hit the nail on the head (plus, being at personal warfare with a nasty cold doesn't help my either). You seem to be keen on this type of style appearance and if you can by any chance help me to update the last 2 sections of his filmography page and have it all said and done, I would be so grateful and appreciative! Plus, someday in the hopefully near future I'd like to show this off to Earl and make his day down the road. Hi there. I checked the image file at the Commons. The marginal text on the original version states that it is from the Radcliffe Archives, and the Schlesinger Library posted the file at Flickr in 2014, stating that there are "no known copyright restrictions". The institution itself has made the image available, so the licensing tag used when it was uploaded at the Commons in 2016 is appropriate and sufficient.

The image depicts Ada Louise Comstock in her professional capacity at Radcliffe, and is stamped with an archival ID number. Since the institution's library posted the image at Flickr, it's evident that "the institution owns the copyright but is not interested in exercising control ... or has legal rights sufficient to authorize others to use the work without restrictions". Hi. I noticed that you undid my edit on Nero Wolfe's page. I checked the link that you placed, about the use of grammar symbols in quotations, and I found a mistake in what you did. But also in what I had done. I removed comas from sentences, placing periods instead. You completely reverted it. But please look the following example placed in the "use of grammar in quotations":
"Fish are friends, not food", said Bruce.
In that quotation the coma is outside the citation, but there is no period. So I did wrong adding the period, but I did well moving the coma and you did wrong completely undoing my partial good edit.

Got it. Sorry for the revert. Yeah, God knows any day now, research will prove that Harlon Bloch or Mike Strank isn't in the picture. FWIW, Ira Hayes is easily identifiable in the Genaust footage, and Strank is not wearing his helmet, just his soft cover, but by the time the Rosenthal picture was snapped, Strank was all but totally obscured. Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

Question on category removal from Chuck Wilson article

Hi WFinch. I saw you removed “Category:Recipients of the Meritorious Service Medal (United States)” from the Chuck Wilson (USAF U-2 pilot) article with the comment, “trim category that is not the same as the Defense Meritorious Service Medal”. I agree that the Defense Meritorious Service Medal is not the same as the Meritorious Service Medal, but Wilson was awarded both of these medals. So I think your category removal was in error. The dispute resolution discussion for this was closed by the moderator due to lack of participation by the other party, who instead decided to try to fork the page and add their changes to that (which earned them a 24-hour block). In the mean time, the page protection has expired on List of Perry Mason episodes. Would you mind adding your opinion to the talk page there, so there's a clear consensus visible? Thanks. Your edit of Holy Sepulchre Cemetery (Worth, Illinois)

Hi, I noticed that you were the last to update the page for Holy Sepulchre Cemetery (Worth, Illinois) and if I knew how, I would try doing the following by myself... The page for HolyS... cemetery in Worth, needs to "redirect" to the correct/updates article for Holy Sepulchre Cemetery (Alsip, Illinois).

It's confusing, as us older folks know it as being in Worth, but it's technically in "Worth Township," which in turn is in "Alsip, Illinois."

Hi there — I'll move the article from Holy Sepulchre Cemetery (Worth, Illinois) to Holy Sepulchre Cemetery (Alsip, Illinois). I know I was perplexed when I was working with the related category at the Commons. If a subsequent editor disagrees with the move, the article can be moved back or named otherwise; but at present, Find a Grave (here) identifies the cemetery as being in Alsip, Cook County, Illinois. Moving Category:Burials at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery (Worth, Illinois) here is somewhat beyond me, but it's been moved at the Commons. — WFinch (talk) 01:20, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

I am the son of Paul T Carroll. I don't know who originally created this page back in 2009, but I am deeply appreciative of that person’s initiative and those that have submitted subsequent edits. I am contacting you because you did a recent editorial correction in February .2020. I would like to propose some edits of the artcle. At the very least, I would like to add a photo of my father (current photo is only of his gravestone) and a correction of the awards he received (two silver stars, not one, plus two Legion of Merits. Under Wikipedia conflict of interest policies, it is my understanding that I am not authorized to make edits because the subject of the article was my father. I am writing to request someone to serve as an independent editor/reviewer of whatever edits I propose. I have done significant research and have access to original family documents and photos. My research has also included reading dozens of transcribed oral histories which are held by the Eisenhower Museum in Abiline, KS. Additional information is available from a biography of my father recently published. Ike's Go To Guy, Paul T Carroll.

Another reason I am seeding assistance since I’m am not technically savvy enough to do the edits myself! I am prepared to work in good faith with whoever volunteers to assist me and to provide objective references and sources to back up all aspects of the proposed edits.
