Is this page just the same as the culture bit from the Scotland page? --Ben davison 18:36, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

  • I originally copied it from there, adding only the picture, when this topic was up for COTW (which it did not win; see the history). There have been some small changes since then, but this article does deserve real expansion beyond what's at the general Scotland page.--Pharos 19:15, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

This article is appalling. --MacRusgail (talk) 20:14, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Scottishness

I have started a article call Scottishness about how the Highland Scot has become the stereotype for scotland over taking the the Lowland Scot Mr Taz (talk) 20:59, 6 November 2008 (UTC)

Utterly appalling

This article is, and always has been, utterly appalling. It needs a total re-write. Just look at the preposterous opening sentence:

  • The culture of Scotland refers to the idiosyncratic cultural norms of Scotland and the Scottish people.

There is just no return when an article starts out in such a dire fashion. --Mais oui! (talk) 11:25, 21 January 2009 (UTC)

Scottish life redirect

Scottish Life redirects here. Can I suggest a disambiguation page or link to Royal London Group for anyone expecting the pension group named Scottish Life? 86.181.43.57 (talk) 14:33, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

What, no religion?

Strange that this page gives only a passing nod to religion rather than a paragraph explaining its historical importance and influence. Some would say it was the main influence on the Scottish character (if there is such a thing). Kim Traynor (talk) 10:20, 15 May 2012 (UTC)

A British Culture

Desmond Morris in the Naked Ape pointed out that if you want to study ethnography it makes more sense to study people in New York or London rather than the Trobiand Islanders of the natives of Papua New Guinea. So stand back and look at Scotland. This article describes mainly its differences from England, and Scotland's unique bits of culture and heritage. Yet Scotland's actual culture, the vast bulk of what goes on all the time every day: language, books, clothing, fashions, movies , television, morals, values, habits, education, jobs and type of Government, are identical, or indistuiguishable, from those of England. Looking atthe bigger picture England and Scotland are culturally both just two parts of an overall, and quite fundamentally overarching, British culture. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.5.15.220 (talk) 19:35, 15 June 2012 (UTC)

Hence the value of an article laying out that which is typically or distinctively Scots. In a bigger picture Scottish culture is largely the same as that of New York and an even bigger one also PNG. Mutt Lunker (talk) 23:58, 17 June 2012 (UTC)
As well as the traditional three (law, religion and education) Scotland has a distinctive culture in literature, arts, architecture, to name but three, that is quite distinct from the rest of the UK and cannot easily be dismissed. Those things should probably be in this article as short summaries.--SabreBD (talk) 00:08, 18 June 2012 (UTC)
