Hats edit

Theme over opening credits is a WB cartoon staple, "Put on Your Old Grey Bonnet", which you may remember was sung by the wolf in Little Red Riding Rabbit. "Bugs' Bonnets" an obvious play on "Bugs Bunny". The following is a pure list of the various hats used. Probably too much info for the synopsis. You take your pick of the best examples:

  • Generic man in business suit and hat, transformed by appropriate change of gear into a bloodthirsty pirate for a few seconds (although continuing to wear his glasses), transforms back to bland after re-donning business suit.
  • Elmer in the same general style and color (medium blue) business suit and derby. Blue derby replaced by orange hunter's hat. Cut to woods, now also in orange jacket and brown pants, and the chase begins.
  • Truck for "Acme Theatrical Hat Co.", going uphill, door comes unlatched, flies open just as truck is crossing bridge, zillions of hats go flying down into the valley where Elmer is chasing Bugs.
  • Army helmet lands on Bugs' head, bearing Technical Sergeant stripes (3 above and 2 below). Bugsy starts giving Elmer orders, including "forward march" off the river bank.
  • Elmer lands in river where many of the hats are; comes up wearing hat, glasses and corncob pipe of General Douglas MacArthur, paraphrases his famous line by saying, "I have wetuwned!" and starts marching menancingly toward Bugs, who quickly digs a hole and loses his sergeant helmet, which now straddles the rabbit hole.
  • Elmer slips under water for a second, comes up wearing hunter's hat again.
  • Bugs burrows around and comes up under a game warden hat. Elmer shoots at the sergeant helmet thinking Bugs is wearing it. Bugs (as warden) chastizes Elmer for shooting sergeants out of season. Elmer starts to explain, "Well, you see, sir, I..." Elmer enunciates the R in "sir". Recurring phenomenon in this film.
  • Wind blows both hats away. Pilgrim hat lands on Elmer, he finishes his thought, "I was just shooting turkeys for the first Thanksgiving dinner." Elmer enunciates the R in "first" and "turkey" properly.
  • Indian headdress lands on Bugs, he adopts stereotyped Indian war whoop, etc., takes gun from Elmer and gives chase.
  • Hats fall off, Elmer gets gun back and gives chase, to a busy road crossing. Bugs scampers across, Elmer stuck on other side.
  • Little old lady's bonnet lands on Elmer. Bugs still running away until Boy Scout "Smokey Bear" hat lands on Bugs.
  • Bugs helps Elmer cross the street. Passing car spins them both around, hats fly off, chase resumes.
  • Elmer blasts away at crevace where Bugs hid. Bugs comes from other side of rock, behind Elmer, wearing "gangster" fedora, imitating Edward G. Robinson as "Rocky", menacing Elmer.
  • Police hat lands on Elmer, who then starts to collar "Rocky", who slips him $10,000 as a bribe.
  • Elmer refuses bribe, but before he can hand it back, Bugs' hat is replaced by British judge's wig, and Bugs sentences Elmer to "only" 45 years, at hard labor, out of consideration to his family.
  • Bugs walks away. Elmer calls out, "Oh, Judge, wiww you mawwy me?" Elmer is now wearing a bridal hat. Top hat falls on Bugs, and he accepts the proposal.
  • As with Rabbit of Seville , the "Wedding March" by Mendelssohn plays in the underscore, as Bugs is carrying Elmer toward a cottage. Bugs says to the audience, "Ya know, I think it always helps a picture to have a romantic ending." Iris out. (We don't want to know what happens after that).

I finally got around to adding this information to the synopsis section of the article. It probably needs to be trimmed down some, though, as I basically included practically everything you relayed me. Cinemaniac (talkcontribscritique) 02:01, 7 March 2008 (UTC)Reply
