2024 Bangladesh interim government

An interim government in Bangladesh is set to be formed following the resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 5 August 2024 due to protests. The President of Bangladesh confirmed that an interim government would be formed as soon as possible.[1][2][3][4]

It was reported that interim government is to be formed comprising of:[5][6]

  2. Dr. Asif Nazrul, journalist & professor of law at Dhaka University
  3. Retired Justice Md Abdul Wahhab Miah, former Chief Justice of Bangladesh
  4. Retired General Iqbal Karim Bhuiyan, former Chief of Army Staff
  5. Retired Major General Syed Iftekhar Uddin, former Inspector General of Prisons
  6. Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya, economist & former Permanent Representative to the UN
  7. Matiar Rahman Chowdhury, journalist & chief editor of Manab Zamin
  8. Retired Brigadier General M Sakhawat Hossain, former Election Commissioner of Bangladesh
  9. Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman, economist & chairperson of Bangladesh Rehabilitation Assistance Committee

It was reported that Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus had been approached to be the head of the government.[7]

The nomination of Yunus, who accepted an offer to advise the interim government, has been supported by key figures in the student movement.[10]
