Great idea

edit

This is a great idea and I hope it spreads to other cities in India. This reminds me of my post to the Chennai Photo Walk people . Please consider joining the Wikipedia:WikiProject Chennai workgroup and continue working on improving the Chennai articles. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 12:14, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

I agree this looks great, let me know if you ever want to compare notes about our previous Wikipedia:Wikipedia Takes Manhattan experience.--Pharos (talk) 22:59, 10 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

A person named CVR browsed through our wish list and would like to donate some of his pictures to Wikipedia:

Triplicane MRTS station http://www.flickr.com/photos/seeveeaar/2835016158/

Tambaram Railway station http://www.flickr.com/photos/seeveeaar/2788383673/

Mylapore MRTS station http://www.flickr.com/photos/seeveeaar/2455106145/

Light house station http://www.flickr.com/photos/seeveeaar/2444661138/

Some local train pics http://www.flickr.com/photos/seeveeaar/3736585439/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/seeveeaar/3709529694/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/seeveeaar/2836384328/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/seeveeaar/3687044072/

Are these pictures needed? Can anyone who has some time to spare please go through these pictures and let me know which ones are required? I can then respond to the author and get the license set for those. Thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 11:59, 10 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

all station pictures are useful and can be added to the respective location articles like Tambaram, Triplicane, Mylapore, Velachery and Light House. i like the last picture in the "local train" pictures. I cant think where those pictures can be used. but we could add all of them to commons and use them when the need arises. --L I C 12:40, 10 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Pictures of railway stations are always welcome. But apart from Velachery station, others are not distinguishable. The pictures of local trains are good and can be used for both chennai topics as well as indian suburba railways. So my list will be

Are there any images pending? If so, I'll upload them. --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 15:16, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
RSrikanth05, yes, the 4 unchecked ones are pending to be uploaded.I was not sure where to use them but those are potentially good pictures for WP:INRI. I have browsed bala's collection, havent completed checking out Sankarapandian's collection. If you find any useful pictures which is not in the category, please upload them to commons. Srikanth (speak) 16:01, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

New York City experience

edit

Invincibilitus asked us about the relevance of our Wikipedia Takes Manhattan experience, and I have shared some ideas on their talk page at User talk:Invincibilitus#New York City experience relevant to Wikipedia Takes Chennai. You are all of course also welcome to look at this. Best of luck with Wikipedia Takes Chennai!--Pharos (talk) 15:29, 11 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for sharing your experience, I liked the Template:Hunt. Can we have something like that for WTCI? Srikanth (speak) 05:23, 14 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Template:Hunt is designed to be usable for any location; the only change I suppose might be needed is translating to Tamil.--Pharos (talk) 13:52, 14 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Post event summary

edit

Eager to hear how the event went off.Pictures?? I saw flickr page of Bala. Looks good. waiting for more. Was there any specific tag used while uploading to flickr. If the pics havent been uploaded yet, i would suggest them to be uploaded to commons first. Srikanth (speak) 05:23, 17 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

share the curiosity. --L I C 13:52, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
someone should comment on what happened of this undertaking. if it couldnt be accomplished because of some problems, let it be so, but, pls do mention it here. --L I C 01:20, 21 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

LIC, It looks like the event did take place.Sankarapandian and Bala have uploaded pictures to flickr and licensed in CC. I dont know if the participants were briefed about licensing as pictures of Pradep and Balajee Ganesh might not be usable as such.I guess people might have got struck in a busy week and might not have updated photos/what happened. I have uploaded some into the commons and some are pending. Srikanth (speak) 05:27, 21 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I see. Thanks Srikanth. --L I C 11:58, 22 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
I had e-mailed Balajee Ganesh and gave him the instructions to set the license. His photos have CC now. I guess we should do the same with others as well. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 11:18, 22 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Ganeshji, I found the following pictures from CVR's album for using in WP articles. Please mail him about it.

Srikanth, Great effort. I just sent out the request to CVR. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 12:54, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Yes, we can use pictures that have his signature. Please make sure to post the Watermark template on them. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 12:56, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Seems CVR has donated all of them. I have uploaded them all to commons:Category:Wikipedia_Takes_Chennai. I havent used them in articles yet, please feel free to do so, i will do that sometime later. Srikanth (speak) 23:10, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bangalore

edit

Is there a possibility of Wikipedia Takes Bangalore anytime soon? --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 15:22, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Am game for bangalore hunt. On the online part of it, can WP:INDIA go on a flickr hunt to get more india related images on to WP. We can have a page stressing why its good for flickr users to donate, importance, licensing issues and keep posting this link on flickr pictures related to india.I feel we could get some rare pictures(like i found a picture of Chennai_Port#Ro-Ro_Car_Terminal and requested the user to change the license). It was a good learning experience going through CVRs album and other chennai related pictures. Atleast at a city level were photowalks are common, we have a huge collection of pictures already in flickr. Srikanth (speak) 15:32, 19 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Just FYI, This NYT article explains why it is difficult to get people to release their pictures. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 00:59, 20 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
My take on it is just like you would donate some of your earned money to charity, I would request photographers to donate a small percentage of their photographs for public use (each month/year). I don't know how to get that message across. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 01:02, 20 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Why ask? Pick a date and schedule one yourself. Yes, you can. :) Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 01:04, 20 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Buddy, I don't have the self-confidence to organise something of this kind.... AS for getting the message across, BLOG about it.... :D --Rsrikanth05 (talk) 15:41, 20 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Motivation is all it takes. I suggest you watch this video. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 11:32, 22 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Thanks

edit

I would like to thank the organizers and the Knowledge Foundation for hosting this event. It is greatly appreciated. We have a tough time finding free Chennai pictures. This event has given us plenty. I hope you continue to host this event every year. Many thanks, Ganeshk (talk) 11:27, 22 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

+1 And many thanks for the participants and CVR for capturing the spirit of Chennai in those images and releasing them under free. And yeah, Happy Madras Day!! Srikanth (speak) 12:24, 22 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Mailer

edit

Since we are not seeing many people upload their photos yet, how about we send a e-mail out to the people on the participant list? I have created a draft here. Please review and comment. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 11:51, 22 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Seems fine, if they dont have a flickr account, they could as well create an account on wikipedia and upload them here. But uploading here is little time consuming than on flickr. And what is WP policy on picasaweb CC images? i guess we should be able to use them as well. If so, people can upload them to picasaweb too, considering most have a gmail id. Srikanth (speak) 12:31, 22 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
It does not matter where they upload. As long as it has a CC license, we can upload it to Commons. Flickr makes it easy to authenticate since we can use a bot (flickrreview) to verify the license. It also allows to search with tags, donno if picassaweb can do that. Regards, Ganeshk (talk) 14:12, 22 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
